Journalist Ken Silverstein delivers a broadside against the modern military-industrial complex in Private Warriors. In the post-cold-war world of rising defense budgets and arms proliferation, Silverstein finds plenty to worry about: "Former Defense Department officials serve as consultants to the arms industry, helping lobby for needless Cold War-era weapons systems and promoting greater arms sales to foreign regimes. Retired generals form private corporations that train the armies of foreign nations and encourage U.S. entanglements abroad. Arms dealers linked to U.S. intelligence agencies still trot the globe hawking their wares, sometimes in support of government operations, sometimes acting strictly as private businessmen. Intellectuals who gained their names by hyping the Soviet threat still counsel our political leaders. The advice they offered during the Cold War was of dubious value, and it has decidedly less merit today." Silverstein wisely populates his book with real-life characters such as German arms dealer Ernst Werner Glatt, Nixon- and Reagan-administration veteran Alexander Haig, and missile-defense advocate Frank Gaffney. He also has an eye for vivid anecdotes: the B-2 bomber, he notes, literally "costs more than its weight in gold." Silverstein's on-the-scene reporting includes visits to a weapons bazaar in Rio de Janeiro and a Soldier of Fortune convention in Las Vegas. At bottom, however, Private Warriors is a polemic rather than a piece of journalism; it aims to make a forceful argument against transplanting the mindset of a cold-war hawk into the security policies of the 21st century. Not everyone will be convinced--attitudes on this subject are famously inflexible--but Silverstein's portrait of the industry and people who profit from military buildups will give pause to all its readers. --John J. Miller

Book Description

Widely-researched and fast-paced, Private Warriors surveys the generals, gun-runners and national security staffers who were cast adrift at the end of the Cold War and who now operate in the private sector. In these pages we encounter Ernst Werner Glatt, a right-wing German who was for many years the Pentagon's preferred gun-runner; ex-Secretary of State Alexander Haig who now lobbies for China and assists in selling weapons to Turkey; and Frank Gaffney, an ex-Pentagon official who has grown rich by promoting the biggest boondoggle of them all, Star Wars. Today's private warriors have a direct financial interest in war and the connections to push for the maintenance of bloated military budgets.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Military/Industrial Stranglehold.......2007-02-23

This book brilliantly summarizes how the legacy of the Cold War, the self-sustaining military industrial complex Eisenhower warned us about, has thoroughly corrupted American politics and its foreign policy. The wretched results are too obvious in the wastelands of Iraq and Afghanistan. The author gives brief examples of how the US uses private contractors to do its dirty work (go see the movie "Lord of War" for a wonderful cinematic treatment) and how the revolving door between the Pentagon and the defense industry begs for the public interest to be violated. For a perfect example of a military-turned-entrepeneur pimp, read about Alexander "I'm in Charge Now" Haig's sweet deals. No American will read this book and not feel like they've been screwed over big time. The only drawback to this little gem is that it is pre-9/11. A subsequent new edition will doubtless be twice as thick with details of this criminal Bush administration's corrupt and malignant behavior.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, Very Interesting.......2002-08-07

This was a very interesting and eye opening book. The book is broken into chapters that look at different aspects of the current war / armaments industry. We get the full picture from arms dealers, armaments companies and their lobbyists to private mercenary companies. The author gives the arms dealers some extra mystery by introducing us to two of the more successful ones, both of which were ex-Nazis. We also get a who's who name run down of past government officials who are now employees or lobbyists for large arms manufactures. I now know where all the cold warriors go after they leave office.

The book really leaves the impression with the reader that the military arm of the government is running the rest of the country via the spending allocated to it via the budget. The author presented the reader with an armload of facts, and left the reader to make his own conclusions. This is not an anti military propaganda piece, but a good book with an incredible amount of information. One of the more shocking conclusions one takes from the book is the ongoing American policy of continual military mobilization. I guess this should not be that surprising given that it is a billion dollar business that has a vested interest in making sure the business keeps on coming it's way.

Overall the book was very good and interesting. It was easy to read and I got through it in only a few days. My only complaint is that there was no ending chapter, no wrap up - it just kinda ended. Other then that a great book.

4 out of 5 stars War, Incorporated.......2001-06-15

Ken Silverstein's "Private Warriors" is an excellent resource -- I wish we had more journalists like him, willing to delve deep into a story and present just the facts, and leave it to the reader to connect the dots. Silverstein doesn't preach: he just offers an incredible amount of information -- all but the most diehard reactionary will find it persuasive.

He names names, and provides an exhaustive account of the ongoing American policy of permanent military mobilization, which was conveniently masked during the Cold War but which continues to grow after the death of Soviet Communism.

The book is broken into six chapters, each exploring a different avenue of the war industry -- from ... arms dealers to private mercenary companies, to the cynical use of military consultants to evade public accountability and oversight and, of course, Star Wars (these days referred to as the Ballistic Missile Defense).

What I was struck with on reading this book is how cynical and amoral the participants are -- they may be flag-waving Americans, but the brotherhood of warmongers really transcends nationality, which is probably a sign of the changing times. It's frightening and infuriating when you see the level of corruption at work, here, and the incredible success achieved by these individuals, and the degree of networking they engage in to ensure that American policy remains firmly locked on a wartime footing.

The only drawbacks I saw in this book was there was so much information presented, it was a little hard to keep track of all of the players -- I would have liked to see some graphs or lists to illustrate some of the points Silverstein enumerated. Also, I thought there ought to be a concluding chapter to the book, to sort of wrap everything up.

Get this book if you want to get a sense of why the "peace dividend" was a short-lived concept (I recall it being talked about for about two weeks, after the collapse of the USSR); I recommend it as a gift for anybody who wants a sense of what's wrong in American policy, and also for anybody too enamored of the status quo.

5 out of 5 stars Eisenhower Warned: Beware of the Military-Industrial Complex.......2000-11-15

Ken Silverstein's excellent book `Private Warriors' exposes the underside of that vile, despicable trade the making and marketing of implements to destroy wholesale-lives, properties, cities, countries--yes, civilization itself. WAR!

It is a megabillion dollar business and with big money at stake greed prevails and morality is easily compromised. Just imagine the size of the business. Start with a US defense budget for next year of $305 billion (that is $8,000 per second) and add what other countries around the world will spend.

The book consists of a preface and six chapters that explore six aspects of the business. Each chapter consists of areas that provide important connections in the mosaic of the military-industrial complex. Upon completion one gets an overall perspective of the whole messy business.

Early in the century munitions makers were known as "Merchants of Death" and dispatched agents and salesmen around the world to promote their business. To control this unconscionable activity governmental regulation was effected. With their strong influence over a period of time the merchants were able to gain acceptance. Now instead of restraining their activities governments actively promote the interests of the arms makers. And in spite of the regulations-where big money is involved--clandestine trading proliferates. According to Jane's Intelligence Review black market sales are about $1 to $2 billion dollars a year in bad years and five times as much in good years.

Among other services, arms brokers set up shell companies and offshore bank accounts and secure vital documents such as end user certificates stating which nation the goods are headed to. If all end user documents were legitimate Peru would have a bigger army than the United States. Most importantly, the brokers provide governments with `plausible deniability'.

Two brokers profiled in the book are former unrepentant Nazis. Their wealth from the business is enormous. They have close connections to our military and are held in high regard. Yet for the right price they do business with just about everyone, frequently dealing with both sides in a conflict. When the military wanted to compare a Soviet helicopter against an expensive anti-aircraft gun, a dealer was able to acquire the helicopter.

Formerly it was considered unconscionable to use the influence and knowledge obtained on a military job for personal enrichment. That prohibition no longer exists. Often the companies that officials regulate become the official's next employers.

Former government officials trade on their vast connections to procure contracts on behalf of defense firms and represent foreign governments desirous of expanding their military. Alexander Haig is a wheeler-dealer who has used his connections to open doors for corporations who seek foreign investment; and has represented such individuals as Sun Myong Moon and governments as China, Indonesia, etc.

With the end of the Cold War there was panic. Arms makers feared a significant reduction in their business. Employees in occupations connected with the military were threatened with a loss of jobs. What to do?

Consultants and think tanks provided the PR to convince the Congress and the public of the new dangers that confront us around the world and pressed for additional spending for defense and a nuclear buildup.

With the reduction of armed personnel, private mercenary firms came into existence. The firms absorbed former officers to create a staff with the proper experience and connections. They provide the military and police training for any allied government under contract. The firms provide many benefits: the legislature does not have to authorize sending our troops; if casualties occur there will be no popular backlash; and no spotlight is put on the human rights abuses of the recipient regime.

The sheer waste of our military budgets are exemplified by some of these choice nuggets in the book: According to a Brookings study, Pentagon spending from between 1948-1998 was $19 trillion dwarfing second place social security at $7.9 trillion! In 1999, dozens of M-60 and M-48 tanks were dumped off the Alabama coast to form artificial reefs! The world's second largest air force-after the Pentagon's-is mothballed in Arizona so that new aircraft can be delivered! As of 1998, four major defense firms-Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon-had more than 250 influence peddlers on their payrolls and the firms collective spending for lobbying that year topped $22 million! Trent Lott, providing pork for his state, added $1.5 billion to a defense appropriation bill for an assault ship the Pentagon did not even ask for!

After reading this book I realized how prescient President Eisenhower was when he delivered his farewell speech on leaving office. Some pertinent remarks were: `...we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence...by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist...we must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together...'

Read the book. Learn how the skullduggery of the warmongers have caused terror, death and destruction throughout the world. Learn how to satisfy their insatiable appetite for greater profits they have bamboozled us with fears of non-existent enemy threats. Our pusillanimous politicians rather than heeding Eisenhower's warnings outbid each other so that our defense outlays continually increase. Meanwhile our infrastructure deteriorates and the poor are relegated to hunger and homelessness.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2004-01-14

Private Maneuvers was my first Catherine Mann title, and possibly my last. I have Strategic Engagements waiting but my disappointment with Private Maneuvers has made me set it aside for another day. I love military romances a la Brockmann and Lovelace and the other glowing reviews here for this title made me buy it. I don't expect much from a Silhouette title as I prefer the longer single titles (Merline Lovelace's Silhouettes being the one exception). Still, I was stunned by how irritated I got with the internal dialogue in the two main characters, especially the heroine. She was going on like a 13 or 14 year old with the hots for a guy for the first time. I wouldn't have minded if we were told once or twice but every other paragraph had Darcy's thoughts about how HOT she thought Max was. Again and again we are subjected to her internal remarks concerning her pathetic attempts to engage Max's attention. How could Darcy not come across as silly, juvenile and pathetic? If this was one of the chick lits I could accept it but not when I thought I was settling down with a romantic-military thriller with mature, self-confident heroes and heroines.

5 out of 5 stars Underwater adventure -- Very highly recommended.......2003-08-05

Air Force co-pilot First Lieutenant Darcy "Wren" Renshaw is disgruntled at being reassigned to fly dolphins and Dr. Max Keagan to the South Pacific rather than flying a war mission; that is, until she gets a look at the good doctor. Tropical flower swim shorts and a five o'clock shadow do not detract from one hot professor. Perhaps this jig in Guam would not be so bad afterall if not for haunting memories of her last stay in the island paradise. Then she had been a child held by kidnappers.

Max's deep undercover CIA assignment is about to meet its conclusion. Two years ago his partner and lover Eva, pregnant with their child, died on a mission. The double agent has led Max to warm tropical waters and unexpected temptation. However, someone watches, and plans to use Max's new love interest to cause harm. Suddenly Darcy and Max's private maneuvers put her at risk, and tropical spiders and snakes are only beginning.

Underwater adventure brings intrigue and love in Catherine Mann's PRIVATE MANEUVERS, the fourth of the "Wingman Warriors" series. Author Mann has made a reputation for delivering sexy, heart pounding action and PRIVATE MANEUVERS is no exception. A spirited heroine, Darcy does not let her fear stop her under the most frightening of circumstances. Determined to gain notice on her own merit, Darcy resents her General father's kindhearted manipulations. Also a military brat, hero Max is her perfect complement, she believes, until she realizes he is more than a simple professor. Rich with witty dialogue and subtle nuances, PRIVATE MANUEVERS delivers a masterful, intriguing romance readers will find impossible to put down. PRIVATE MANUEVERS comes very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Hooray! Catherine Mann does it again!.......2003-06-15

I must confess that I've been a fan of Catherine Mann's work since her debut novel, WEDDING AT WHITE SANDS, so I wasn't surprised to discover yet another wonderful novel by this talented author. With this latest installment in her "Wingman Warriors" series, Ms. Mann has snagged a special place in my heart as one of my favorite auto-buy authors.

PRIVATE MANEUVERS once again proves my faith in this author's ability to write action-packed fiction with equal parts emotion, suspense and humor.

Darcy "Wren" Renshaw is a fiesty, memorable heroine, while Max Keagan is the kind of strong, sexy hero reader's will remember long past the time they finish the last page.

One of the many exciting features in this fourth addition to the "Wingman Warriors" series is that we are introduced to our first female member of the C-17 squadron. Darcy is competent, strong and likable in spite of the fact that she suffered a frightening past trauma that still haunts her in the present. Rather than turning her into a victim, Darcy's past makes her both sympathetic and endearingly vulnerable to the reader.

Max doesn't come into the mix as a perfect hero, free from issues. He has his own tragic past that threatens this couple's happy-ever-after ending.

Like I said earlier, Catherine Mann has done it again! The suspense element will keep the reader guessing until the end, but the pay-off is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Consistently Superb.......2003-06-14

Yet again, Catherine Mann brings us a superb book complete with serious relationship issues, authentic military research and witty dialogue. I love her characters and the way she breathes life into their journey. Now, I just need to figure out how to get a full night's sleep when her next all-nighter book comes out. It can't be too soon for me!

5 out of 5 stars Another Wingmen Warrior Winner.......2003-06-14

1st Lt. Darcy "Wren" Renshaw is tired of being kept out of the war-zone action. She wants to fly into the action and make a difference. Instead she is stuck flying marine biologist Dr. Maxwell Keagan and his two dolphins, "Lucy and Ethel" to Guam. The first meeting between Darcy and Max is priceless. Both are bowled over by their instant attractions to each other. Max has a hidden agenda in going to Guam. He is an undercover CIA agent trying to find the leak in his team. This leak caused the death of his former partner and lover. Soon Darcy is in danger and Max it trying to keep her safe. Through all the danger and intrigue Max keeps trying to protect his heart.

This latest Wingmen Warrior story is fast paced and thrilling. The dialogue is witty and the chemistry is sizzling. It was great to revisit with previous wingmen characters that appear in the book. You will enjoy this book by Cathy Mann and be looking forward to the next book.

Kelly presents a prophetic vision of God's restoration of the five-fold ministry-apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers (see Ephesians. 4:11)-a strategic force the end-times Church will need for victory in the final battle. Like Rick Joyner's best-seller The Final Quest, this is a vision sure to be talked about, debated and ultimately embraced by a Church hungry to reap the great harvest and fulfill its destiny as the army of the Almighty God.

4 out of 5 stars Read this!.......2000-11-20

I hesitated buying this because I'm skeptical of "end time" books. Boy am I glad I changed my mind. Kelly describes a series of dreams he had and gives an interpretation. Timely yet timeless. I read it in a day yet will be thinking about it for the rest of my life. I hope more people read this and that God ignites more people to think with a generational perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Medicine.......2000-09-16

End Time Warriors is a clear trumpet call to the contemporary church. Using prophetic imagery, biblical insight and many real life examples, Kelly & Costa pull the blinders off of the modern masquerade of ministry. They propose that much anointing is currently wasted and point us to some hopeful solutions. Although the message is essentially hard hitting there is also a refreshing sense of hope that shines through. Like a cool drink of water, this book is just the medicine that Dr. Jesus ordered.

4 out of 5 stars Itýs more than a vision, itýs an adventure.......2000-06-02

Heat after heat, the enemy is looking out for a crack on the wall. But what emerges will be the finest texture in the House of the Lord call warriors. This is a book of hope !

"End time warrior" presents to readers like a revelation kiosk, highlighting common objectives, direction, integrity and perseverance which the church must seriously take heed. Overall, the message contains gripping revelation with exclamation truth.

Living in a time of distress where the shadow of great uncertainty is casting on planet earth, there must arise an answer powerful enough to bring hope and life. The apostolic army, John Kelly saw in his vision, is unquestionably the visible topsoil prepared to fit that dire need. Coming to the fore shall be these people with flaming answers. Where they are placed, light will abound and darkness will diminishes into a blip.

From the account of Kelly's vision, there will come some of the most engaging periods the church would need to go through. The church has don some many titles in the past. Each title leaves a trail of revelation of the Lord. We have the Body, House of the Lord, Bride, and now Warrior.

After reading this book, some of us will probably be musing over the portal of opportunities awaiting for us. In his book, the author beckons us to prepare for encouraging results. Great harvest will unfold before our eyes. Resources will be returning. New grounds will be won. Old grounds will be claimed. What is even more glaring will be the fact that the prophesied church will be at the height of her maturity and beauty. Yes! It will take maturity to wrestle against the unseen forces. Anything less or compromising will cause us to fall under the duplicity of today's increasing false signs and wonders.

It will take unity to change today's spiritual climate. The greatest unity will spin out from the spread of diversity. Denominations lines are thinning, as the Spirit is drawing all of us for a common purpose. Even the very marginal differences among us will be offset by the love of the Spirit upon all of us.

This book also emphasizes the importance of spiritual fathers. Every warrior sent into the spiritual battlefield has a signature of his spiritual father on his heart. The quality of a warrior is formed on the anvils of a fatherhood ministry. In tandem with this emphases, the author also promotes the power of mentoring. Substantial quality in a spiritual life is developed out from a mentoring relationship, which should be today's primary focus in any ministry.

I believe Kelly's ministry is a personal offering to see the growth of God's Church. God has set him apart to be a pacesetter. In his anointing, he knows the speed of the Spirit and determines to train others to catch up. Read this book, it unfurls the motive of his heart.

5 out of 5 stars Punchy and Packed.......2007-03-15

Karl Friday's "Hired Swords" is a fairly brief book, though it packs a tonne of information into the 177 pages of main text, (not including endnotes, index and all the rest).

Friday focuses on the Heian Period in Japan, mainly from the late 7th century to the 11th and 12th centuries. The book deals with the military structures and how they changed through the Heian Period. This includes the policing functions of some military units, as well. Rather than accepting the common perception that the Heian court was an ineffectual group of flunkies more interested in poetry than practical realities, Friday presents quite a different view. Instead of attributing the rise of private military groups to Court indifference, Friday posits that the changes made were deliberate changes by the Court to streamline the military, increase its efficiency and meet changing needs throughout the period.

Friday provides copious endnotes, adding more detail to what is given in the text. He has referenced his work well, leaving no doubt that he has thought this through thoroughly.

I completely enjoyed this book without reservation, and I gained a lot from it. It was easily read, I found it accessible, and I was hooked until the last page. I can recommend this book wholeheartedly as a must for anyone interested in the developments of Heian military organisation. and how it fed into the rise of the Samurai some centuries later.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and well researched book.......2004-02-03

An excellent reading on the subject of Japan's military history in the ancient period.

3 out of 5 stars Be Careful........2000-06-09

I had to read this book and write a review on it for my Japanese History course at school. However, after starting the book I soon realized that I was in over my head. The detail of this book is amazing and his sources and citations are top notch. The author also includes a glossary that comes in handy. However, if you are not an Asian scholar or have some type of deep seated interest in the subject, you might want to reconsider. This book is extremely advanced and left me having to read several pages over and over until I caught everything. My biggest gripe with the book is the author's way of introducing the Japanese language into the book. While writing the author would have what the Japanese word is for a selected word, i.e. warrior. However after having seen the Japanese word the author would then replace the english word for the Japanese one. I would not get far before I had no clue what the words meant, and I lost track of the argument the author was making because I was looking at the glossary repeatedly or looking through previous pages. No doubt the book is well researched and the author knowledgeable, but novices beware.

As a pilot with over 25 years of flight experience, I found this book an excellent supplement to the Warrior's flight manual. The illustrations put the aircraft systems into prospective, and give an overall insight into the aircraft's operation.

I would recommend this book and the other books of this series to any pilot -- regardless of experience -- who is looking to have a check ride in a particular aircraft. These books even serve as a refresher if you haven't flown the aircraft in a few years, and you want to get reaquinted with it.

5 out of 5 stars Made me a safer pilot.......2002-02-07

Excellent book. Good job of covering the Warrior systems. I ended up expanding my checklists beyond that published by Piper, and feel much more confident and safe while flying. Also, I bought a used book that was in basically new condition. Saved a few bucks....worth it!

Book Description

From West Africa to the former Yugoslavia, in every global hot spot a private army waits, ready to step into the fray. Professional soldiers of fortune have always existed--but now they're on the brink of playing a new role in world affairs. A former mercenary takes a hard look at the conflicts presently raging, contrasting the success of these armies in achieving peace with the often inept and confused actions of the United Nations. A sure-to-be controversial account.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book about a timely subject.......2002-12-17

Fortune's Warriors is an incredibly insightful look into a growing industry that will only increase in relevance with our world's uncertain future. The subject is former military veterans, most of them coming from Special Operations units of western countries, that hire themselves out to foreign goverments.

The general population, largely ignorant on the subject, would quickly label them as mercenaries, but for the first time I've ever seen in any book, the author takes a hard analytical look at exactly what that term really means in comparison to the images it conjures when formulating world opinion.

A mercenary could very well be a sociopathic criminal thrill seeker, looking for a way to satisfy a delusional urge. In this day and age, however, he's more likely to be a former professional soldier, helping to stabilize a region and protecting non-government aid organizations to distribute needed supplies and medical care to war torn areas of the world. The mercenary could very well be a professional soldier within a western military force, such as the French Foreign Legion. If anything, this book shows that the word mercenary does not have a cut and dried definition.

This particular industry ranges from companies that simply compile risk analysis reports on various areas of questionable stability, to former soldiers who train foreign militaries, all the way down to the Private Military Coporation, who will come in to fight your war for you, provided you are recognized in the international community as a legitmate goverment.

The book also talks about the troubled history that these security companies have with different parts of the UN, and how regulation and policy that might be set by the UN requires a closer look.

The book is full of real world examples, most of them taken from the tragic and war torn Sierra Leone. It describes how a South African based Private Military Company called Executive Outcomes was able to come in and assist the government in surpressing an extremely violent and brutal rebel movement. The rebels had tortured civilians, cutting off villager's limbs was almost a form of recreation for them, and EO managed to come in and restore order in a matter of weeks. The villagers welcomed them in the streets, and even the usually pacifist NGO workers had to acknowledge their positive presence. The true tragedy of the story lies in the protests made through the UN, and EO had to leave, which plunged the country right back into chaos.

In a more uncertain world where western militaries are spread more and more thin, this subject deserves much more attention then it recieves. In many cases, the men who are Fortune's Warriors could very well be their only hope.

3 out of 5 stars The many faces of Lincoln.......2006-02-28

In this presentation we hear of selected Lincoln letters sent through out the years of 1830 to 1865. When I wrote selected, I meant that not all of his letters are included or are subjects arranged. It is interesting to hear Lincoln's letters to various people be it politicians, family or civilians alike, although at times it seemed a bit confusing to understand why he was writing the letter. During the war years it was easier to understand his response to individuals at times, although the audio book does not prep the listener before each letter to explain to whom and why the letter is being written. I think a short narrative before each letter read aloud would have been beneficial at times and really enhanced this presentation. It was great listening to some of Lincoln's letters although a prior explanation as to why or what he was responding to would have really made this book.

"The letters format, with its natural brevity and personal emotion, proves itself a natural for audio adaptation. Perhaps other literary-minded publishers should follow suit. Original production." - Publishers Weekly. "George Vail's resonant voice captures the nuances of the letters with smooth expression, but he doesn't overdo it. He reflects Lincoln's warmth, humor and steel with assurance." - AudioFile
