Book Description
This monograph presents a complete and rigorous study of modern functional analysis. It is intended for the student or researcher who could benefit from functional analytic methods, but does not have an extensive background and does not plan to make a career as a functional analyst. It develops the topological structures in connection with measure theory, convexity, Banach lattices, integration, correspondences (multifunctions), and the analytic approach to Markov processes. Many of the results were previously available only in works scattered throughout the literature. The choice of material was motivated from problems in control theory and economics, although the material is more applicable than applied.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent treatment of mathematical methods for economist.......1998-10-20
The monograph covers advanced mathematical methods for economists. It includes chapters on general topology, topological vector spaces, Riesz spaces and Banach lattices, measure and integration, etc. While the book does not contain (hardly) any economics, the mathematics covered is selected under the aspect of later applications to economics. The book contains for example a long chapter on correspondences, a topic which is hardly covered by any standard math book. The presentation of the mathematics is throughout clear and precise. The advantage of the book is that it covers a wide range of mathematical topics, which could not be found together in a book before. Graduate students in economic theory can use it as a text book, but it can also be used as a reference book. The only lacks of the book are that there are no exercises and that not all math areas important to economics (e.g. differential topology) are covered. Overall, this is an excellent book and should become part of the library of everybody interested in mathematical economics.

Applied Nonlinear Analysis
ASIN: 3540649832 |
Book Description
Progress in the theory of economic equilibria and in game theory has proceeded hand in hand with that of the mathematical tools used in the field, namely nonlinear analysis and, in particular, convex analysis. Jean-Pierre Aubin, one of the leading specialists in nonlinear analysis and its application to economics, has written a rigorous and concise - yet still elementary and self-contained - textbook providing the mathematical tools needed to study optima and equilibria, as solutions to problems, arising in economics, management sciences, operations research, cooperative and non-cooperative games, fuzzy games etc. It begins with the foundations of optimization theory, and mathematical programming, and in particular convex and nonsmooth analysis. Nonlinear analysis is then presented, first game-theoretically, then in the framework of set valued analysis. These results are then applied to the main classes of economic equilibria. The book contains numerous exercises and problems: the latter allow the reader to venture into areas of nonlinear analysis that lie beyond the scope of the book and of most graduate courses.

Solid theory and application plus history.......2001-02-08
Laahoven and Aarts, particulary Aarts, made a great stuff in heuristic reference book. Even though Simulated Annealing (SA) has long history but there is no work as complete as this book. Don't let the publication date fools you, 10 year book stills as good as yesterday for its comprehensive and the story of SA. Even though Aarts edits several books and papers after this book, they are far different from this solid SA book. I don't have this book though, just read it from Library loan. It's a sad story for this book is out of print. I wish the publisher will have it for you soon.

Book Description
This monograph focuses on the importance of the Laplace distribution and describes the inferential and modeling advantages that this distribution, together with its generalizations and modifications, offers. After presenting an historical introduction to the subject, the authors collect and present in a systematic way the univariate Laplace distribution, knowledge of which until now has been scattered in the vast statistical, engineering, and mathematical literature. The multivariate and skewed Laplace distribution are discussed here for the first time in detailed monograph form. Generalizations of Laplace distributions and stochastic processes to which they lead are presented as well. Many results, particularly those on the multivariate and skewed Laplace distribution, appear in print for the first time. The exposition systematically unfolds with many examples, tables, illustrations, and exercises. A comprehensive index and extensive bibliography also make this book an ideal text for a senior undergraduate and graduate seminar on statistical distributions, or for a short half-term academic course in statistics, applied probability, and finance. Key to the growing interest in the Laplace distribution are its applications, in particular, financial applications. The book covers interesting and recent applications of models based on the Laplace distribution, and will serve as a guide to development in this area of applied research for a broad audience of statisticians, finance experts, economists, engineers, and health scientists. Finally, in opening a new field of research in the theory of statistical distributions, The Laplace Distribution and Generalizations should strongly appeal to those working in theoretical or applied probability theory.

Book Description
Variational inequalities proved to be a very useful tool for investigation and solution of various equilibrium type problems arising in Economics, Operations Research, Mathematical Physics, and Transportation. This book is devoted to a new general approach to constructing solution methods for variational inequalities, which was called the combined relaxation approach. This approach is rather flexible and allows one to construct various methods both for single-valued and for multi-valued variational inequalities, including nonlinear constrained problems. The other essential feature of the combined relaxation methods is that they are convergent under very mild assumptions. The book can be viewed as an attempt to discribe the existing combined relaxation methods as a whole.

Book Description
In the ideal world, major decisions would be made based on complete and reliable information available to the decision maker. We live in a world of uncertainties, and decisions must be made from information which may be incomplete and may contain uncertainty. The key mathematical question addressed in this volume is "how to make decision in the presence of quantifiable uncertainty." The volume contains articles on model problems of decision making process in the energy and power industry when the available information is noisy and/or incomplete. The major tools used in studying these problems are mathematical modeling and optimization techniques; especially stochastic optimization. These articles are meant to provide an insight into this rapidly developing field, which lies in the intersection of applied statistics, probability, operations research, and economic theory. It is hoped that the present volume will provide entry to newcomers into the field, and stimulation for further research.

Book Description
The primary aim of this book is to present notions of convex analysis which constitute the basic underlying structure of argumentation in economic theory and which are common to optimization problems encountered in many applications. The intended readers are graduate students, and specialists of mathematical programming whose research fields are applied mathematics and economics. The text consists of a systematic development in eight chapters, with guided exercises containing sometimes significant and useful additional results. The book is appropriate as a class text, or for self-study.
