I have read many articles and books on this topic. While most books cover the evauluation levels defined by Kirkpatrick, this book goes one step further by providing lots of practical examples on how to actually evaluate training at each level. Every page contains at least one useful tip!

5 out of 5 stars How to measure training results.......2005-08-02

very practical information. Gave very easy steps to follow and easy to implement. Reinforced that training can be measured.

3 out of 5 stars e-book beware.......2002-12-13

I ordered this book with the Adobe Digital Download. After running the install file 3 times, it still wouldn't work. It kept saying "None of the requested vouchers could be obtained."

I called Adobe twice and they said they don't support the e-Book reader! I checked their user forums at (...)and there are three other people with the same problem. I can't believe Amazon(.com) and Adobe sell a product neither one supports!

5 out of 5 stars How to get up and running when training assessment is wanted.......2002-08-01

Jack J. Phillips' has been writing several books on assessing the impact of training and his latest book, co-authored with Ron D. Stone, is among the best ones, it is indeed a very good introductory book on evaluating training.
The more experienced training practitioner, who may have been using Kirkpatricks 4 levels, will also get a lot out of the book. It adds tools to Kirkpatricks levels but it also completes the Kirkpatrick model by adding a fifth lev, a ROI analysis. However, not everything may be measured in $ so the authors also include some ideas on how to present intangible assets in the reports.

A lot of the concepts have been presented in previous books, but here they are taken a step further when the authors give examples from their long experience within the field. Downloadable forms, worksheets, and checklists (at the publishers website!!), that may be adapted to various needs is a definite valuable add-on for practitioners who do not have an urge "to do it all on their own".

The book starts off with taking a look at the need for measurement and evaluation and presents the ROI-process as a framework for 6 types of measures, (Kirkspatricks' 4, the ROI and intangible assets). Then all levels, possible measurements etc are presented throughout the book, finishing off with key implementation steps. It is all wrapped in the ROI-process, a step-by-step "receipe" for planning, building and implementing the evaluation process.

So when the top management want to know if a training program is worth the money . . .
Reading the book may get you on the track. It may help you talk the language of Money a way that senior management understands.
This is in addition to building better programs.

And it sure was practical with a digital version on my laptop, that way I bing it with me whereever I go; really conveniant when being a consultant - -

Book Description

This is the new edition of the highly successful practical guide for clinicians developing tools to measure subjective states, attitudes or non-tangible outcomes in their patients. It is widely used by people from many disciplines, who have only a limited knowledge of statistics. This thoroughly updated edition of Health Measurement Scales, Third Edition gives more details on cognitive requirements in answering questions, and how this influences scale development. There is now an expanded discussion of generalizability theory, a completely revised chapter on Item Response Theory and many revisions are included, based on the latest research findings. These features combine to provide the most up-to-date guide to measuring scale development available. It synthesizes the theory of scale construction with practical advice, culled from the literature and the authors' experience, about how to develop and validate measurement scales to be used in the health sciences. The theory goes into issues of reliability, generalizability theory, validity, the measurement of change, the cognitive requirements of answering questions, and item response theory. Practical issues cover devising the items, biases that may affect the responses, pre-testing and weeding out poorly performing items, combining items into scales, setting cut points, and the practical issues of using scales in various ways, such as face-to-face interviews; mailed or telephone-administered surveys; and over the internet. One chapter also discusses some of the ethical issues that scale developers and users should be aware of. Appendices lead the reader to other readings; sources of already developed scales and items; and a very brief introduction to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.

The best thing about the book is that it is really easy to comprehend and covers all the important areas. I feel it is a "must buy" for professionals in the area of health-related quality of life and outcomes research.

4 out of 5 stars Useful for a newcomer to the clinical trial environment.......2001-05-04

As a clinical trials computer programmer, I'm not the primary target audience for this book. However, as an experienced programming consultant who was new to clinical studies in the pharmaceutical industry, I found it gave me a useful overview of the typical deliverables that my efforts supported. Acronyms that are frequently used in the clinical environment, such as IB (Investigator's Brochure) and ISS (Integrated Safety Study) are given some definition and examples are shown. I found this information valuable in enabling me to feel comfortable with these concepts when they were discussed in meetings with statisticians and project managers.

2 out of 5 stars Not a practical guide, more a manifesto !.......1998-04-18

Dr. Bonk is a seasoned professional who has worked at all levels of his craft, including the highest. This book is entitled "a practical guide for pharmaceutical research", and specifically concentrates on the output of documents from the pharmaceutical industry (regulatory documents and manuscripts, as well as, to a lesser extent, audio-visual preparations and computer-generated products). I bought the book because it was the only one that specifically addresses the needs of those of us working in the pharmaceutical industry.

This book is a manifesto, or one (alternative) philosophy, for the role of the medical writer in a pharmaceutical company. As such, its greatest achievement will be to attract people with talent into an occupation that is sorely in need of more and better writers. If this book stimulates under-graduates or graduates to explore this profession, then it will have made a significant, contribution to pharmaceutical research.

However, this book falls far short of being a practical guide. It is not, nor does it claim to be, a style guide; this is not a deficiency in itself. But to be a practical guide, there is much more that it needs to consider: how do medical writers multi-task, and manage their inevitably numerous assignments all at varying degrees of completion ? What should one look for in word processing software, and is this the same for everybody ? How can one enhance one's interactions with journal editors ? What are the relevant professional guilds and associations, and what are their courses and credentials like ? These are a few of the practical things, outside questions of style, that medical writers need to work inside the pharmaceutical industry.

The document templates provided (and lauded in the book's advertising) are poor. The regulatory documents should have followed closely the ICH or FDA guidelines (neither is new). A reprinted, stellar example of a published paper, with some illuminating commentary, and even some succes!sive stages of drafting, would have been an asset.

The initial sections of this book attempt to teach about the drug development process. Unless this can be done more thoroughly (and preferably by someone who has actually developed drugs), this description is inadequate to equip a medical writer in a pharmaceutical company. The descriptions are out of date and garbled in places. There are medical writers who indeed significantly contribute to drug development in the way that Dr. Bonk envisages, but they know a lot more than this about how new drugs are discovered and approved.

Lesser criticisms include the production of this book. At a little over 100 loosely worded pages it is not inexpensive. But its printing is cheap, and the figures were especially poorly printed in my copy. The figures, too, were often redundant; for example, the "pyramids" of the components of a medical journal manuscript were especially irrelevant.

In summary, this book is unique in giving a sound philosophy for the medical writer in a pharmaceutical company. As a practical guide (its stated claim) it is a real failure. This reviewer now understands why its plaudits were written by Professors of English in liberal arts schools, and not by experienced pharmaceutical industry personnel.

Praise for the First Edition of MASTER SCHEDULING.

"Master scheduling, the complex integration of all management planning activities, is presented in John Prouds effective style. A tremendously broad undertaking, [this book] is sensitive to the need of the practitioner to know how and the executive to know why." - Richard Pugliese, Executive (Retired) Monitor Labs Systech, Xerox Corporation

"The master scheduling techniques explained in this book form the best approach for cost effectively replacing the communication links that are often lost in the current environment of reduced people resources. Master Scheduling is the single best resource for these business solutions." - Michael L. Bales, consultant with Oliver Wight Americas; former vice president, manufacturing, G&W Electric

"Provides both education for the uninitiated and practical reference material for the practitioner. It is a valuable resource for any enterprise." - Tim Ewen, Vice President Supply Chain Management, Applied Magnetics Corporation

"John Proud helps the reader to understand the application of master scheduling principles and describes what works in great detail. Master Scheduling will become the text for any course on master scheduling and the standard resource for all manufacturing companies. . . ." - Richard C. Ling, President Richard C. Ling, Inc.

In todays competitive, fast-paced world of manufacturing, every aspect of a companys operation must be highly responsive to a customers needs. Master scheduling, when used in conjunction with Enterprise Resource Planning, is an essential planning tool that helps manufacturing companies synchronize their production with actual market demand.

In this expanded and updated Second Edition of the definitive book on the subject, John F. Proud shows companies how to create and maintain valid and realistic master schedules. Anyone involved in designing and maintaining a companys master schedule will find a wealth of practical, proven advice in Master Scheduling. From sales and marketing to manufacturing, materials management, and engineering, Proud includes important advice for integrating all areas of a company within the framework of an effective master schedule.

In every chapter of this edition, Proud introduces important new material to ensure complete and up-to-date coverage of this constantly evolving field. Two entirely new chapters covering the process industry and manufacturing at multiple sites-domestically and internationally-have been added.

The new chapter covering the process industry identifies where the master scheduling mechanics and management issues are similar to intermittent manufacturing, as well as different. The supply management chapter deals with managing an enterprises internal supply chain. Numerous short case studies are also included to illustrate important topics.

Packed with helpful checklists, examples, and illustrations, Master Scheduling delivers easy-to-follow guidelines for implementing and managing a world- class master schedule. Proud shows managers how to avoid the most common problems while consistently maximizing the accuracy and performance of the master schedule.

5 out of 5 stars Balancing supply and demand.......2005-05-25

Questions for the executive team that merit concern: What about inventory? If a plant is schedule to build a 100 unit but 140 appear will there be enough inventory to satisify the unexpected demand? In the reverse, when demand fails should the plant continue building inventory? What are the alternatives existing on the manufacturing floor? When orders fail to appear workers and equipment are idle unless alternative work is found. When demand exceeds supply, can more supply be created through overtime or outsourcing? How are customers affected? "When actual demand is underestimated, management becomes the traffic cop, directing the company's limited output to certain customers and withholding it from others."

"Knowing that forecasts will never match actual demand, except on rare occassion, master schedulers understand that they must be flexible in shifting capacity and materials from one period to another. They must know which customer will allow a delivery split over two or more periods. "A valid master plan is one in which the material due dates equal the material need dates, and the planned capacity equals the required capacity."

Manufacturing Production Scheduling is balancing Demand (Sales Forecasts, Customer Orders, Branch Warehouses, Interplant orders, and Custom/Special Orders) with Supply (Inventory,Equipment, Labor, Facilities, Time, and Money). When a company has more demand for it product it can 1. Increase the supply of the product by getting more material and resources 2. Decrease the demand by turning away or rescheduling some of the demand. Likewise, if there is more supply of the product than demand the company has two choices: 1. Increase demand by energizing the sales force, run a promotion, or discount price. 2. Decrease the supply of the product or material/capacity needed to produce it by cutting back production, people, and equipment.

The supply side can have a shock absorber. Inventory is a shock absorber. Another type of supply shock absorber is flexibility in the manufacturing chain which allows the company to alter plant floor activity to satifisy demand flunctations with severe disruptions.

The demand side can have a shock absorber. Flexiblity can extend to sales and marketing through promotions and discounts. The customer can be swayed to cooperate with the demand and supply balance through sales and discount or sales inducements.

A company must decide which side of the demand and supply balance to focus on: "sell the products manufacturing makes" or "build the products that sales sells." Once decided the company moves to the task of balancing product supply through demand management, sales and operation planning, supply management, and master scheduling.

Capacity planning addresses the question: "Do we or will we have enough equipment, enough people, enough materials, and enough time to meet the sales and operations plans as currently written?"

Demand managment manages all demands for the product and ensures the master scheduler is aware of them. It encompasses the activities of forecasting, order entry, order promising, branch warehouse requirements, interplant orders, and service part requirements.

Supply management manages replenishment quantities created in response to anticipated or firm demands for the product. It encompasses supply planning in pre-sales and operations planning, rationing out the production plan to the manufacturing facility, coordinating finished goods inventory, manage production to satisify customer demand, establishing competitive lead times, and counseling with plant master schedules.

5 out of 5 stars Fairly comprehensive and EZ to understand.......2001-03-24

One of few 600-pages book that is easy to understand, and a "pleasure" to read. The book is well organized, and fairly comprehensive. I was a novice in manufacturing concepts and this book helped me gain significant understanding of manufacturing planning concepts. The only subject that is lacking is a brief chapter on modern supply chain planning software packages that have become essential tools these days. The book is very expensive, but IMHO it's worth every penny if you're trying to learn about the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and wonderfully written........1998-09-18

John F. Proud has given us the definitive text on master scheduling. He has turned what should be a dry subject into 500+ pages that are thorough, enlightening, and suprisingly readable.

Contents include the mechanics of master scheduling, managing the MPS in various manufacturing environments (make-to-stock, make-to-order, etc.), planning bills, finishing schedules, capacity planning, demand management, and system implementation. Key points are punctuated by a running fictional account of master scheduling in action -- with all the personalities and politics that bear on this essential task.

Proud presents the vast material in a logical and entertaining manner. Detailed computational examples are provided for many of the situations a master scheduler will face. Proud is not afraid to depart from standard APICS language or teachings when appropriate -- but he does clearly identify when he has done so. Perhaps most significant is his exceptional grasp of the human relations and management issues involved. He shows that master scheduling is more than just crunching numbers.

Highly recommended as preparation for the APICS Master Planning exam.

      Book Description

Cross-cultural orientation programmes are designed to prepare people who are about to interact extensively with others from very different cultural backgrounds. Programme goals include development of better intercultural relations, smoother adjustment to problems and minimization of stress. In this volume a set of training materials has been developed that can form the basis of various cross-cultural orientation programmes. The materials are based on the assumption that there are personal experiences shared by people who live and work in cultures other than their own. These experiences include anxiety, disconfirmed expectancies, ingroup-outgroup distinctions, confrontation with one's own prejudices and attributions about others' behaviour.

5 out of 5 stars excellent resource for teachers and cross-cultural trainers.......2003-11-07

Cushner and Brislin's Intercultural Interactions is perhaps the most useful cross-cultural studies book that I have ever read.
Designed to be helpful regardless of the cultural background of those in the critical incidents, or the reader's particular culture, it is both highly useful as a reference book and as a teaching resource.
The first chapter is an excellent introduction for people who are about to enter another culture extensively. The second, which is full of information for teachers and cross-cultural trainers, is also an enjoyable read. The main focus of the book, however, is in the next eight chapters, which present over one hundred examples of critical incidents under themes such as host customs, family, tourist experiences, the workplace and education. The cultural backgrounds of the people involved in these incidents are very diverse, and include Americans (and their many cultures), Europeans, Asians, Latin Americans, Arabs, and also the physically disabled and the deaf. All the stories are believable, having been well researched, and well written. What is more impressive, however, is the trouble the authors have taken to validate them, asking no fewer than sixty professionals from a diverse range of disciplinary backgrounds to offer an interpretation. This kind of scientific approach is excellent, I think, and I also welcomed there being no right answer; only preferred ones, since the experts could never agree unanimously.
The final three chapters deal with issues of culture in greater depth, and also point to additional resources for teachers and cross-cultural trainers, which is all very useful.
If I were to have to find fault with this book - which I do not want to do, then it would be that I found interpreting some of the stories rather easy once I read the options, since they had just one juicy morsel of information about a culture that gave the whole game away. This is a very minor point, of course, and teachers and cross-cultural trainers who plan to use such stories in class will surely be able to manage.
I have not used Intercultural Interactions with my students yet, but I do plan to do so, and I am sure that they will enjoy learning from it, as much as I am sure that I will be using it for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent practical guide.......2003-06-23

An excellent practical guide for both students and teachers of
intercultural communication skills. The book provides a short, but
precise consolidation of the process of intercultural interaction, and
from there on focusses on identifying one of the most prolific tools,
the case study, employed to train intercultural communication
      awareness and skills.

The 'culture assimilator' technique requires the trainee to read short
case studies, or critical incidents, that present culture clashes
between individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Trainees are
typically asked to select from a range of alternative explanations for
the incident. Through the process of discussing in groups, attempting
to draw a conclusion or discover underlying concepts, trainees learn
how and why people make judgements concerning the cause of behaviour.

The first third of the book provides a broad definition of
intercultural interaction and the issues involved at the point of
cultural misunderstanding (misattribution process). How the culture
assimilator facilitates the development of a more sophisticated,
layered understanding of cultural behaviour rounds out the
      introduction.

The middle section of the books contains a substantial
bulk of critical incidents and their accompanying explanatory essays,
which cover 18 major themes that reflect the places and situations
where people are most likely to encounter difficulties (workplace, in
the family, education and schooling, settling in and adjusting,
      socialising events, returning home, etc.).

The last third of the book looks at the application of the critical
incidents for an understanding of the emotional consequences of
culture clash, and provides further background for 'knowledge areas'
required to respond effectively to many every day behaviours.

For especially teachers and trainers this book is a rich source of
material to supplement courses or seminars, and a rare step-by-step
analysis of the development and use of a typical method of training
intercultural sensitivity. The authors guide the teacher and trainer
through the stages of administering the 'culture assimilator' using
sample incidents, and provide clear guidelines on how to construct or
tailor critical incidents key to their learners' understanding of
      cultural concepts.

The book, both as informational background and practical skills
training tool, can be used for diverse groups such as international
businessmen, teachers and teacher education students, psychology
professors, cross-cultural trainers, and even health care
professionals. The critical incident method can be adapted along
      culture-specific or culture-general lines, into role-plays, to
introduce a topic as a key point in understanding more complex
      concepts.

          Book Description

Conducting GCP-Compliant Clinical Research Wendy Bohaychuk and Graham Ball Good Clinical Research Practices, UK and Canada The overall aim of this work is to provide a reference book which describes the general framework for conducting GCP-compliant clinical research, particularly pharmaceutical industry clinical research. Wendy Bohaychuk and Graham Ball run a consultancy, GCRP Ltd., which has conducted over 820 GCP audits involving more than 200 companies in the last 10 years. More than 5,000 individuals have been involved in their training courses to help people perform GCP-compliant clinical research. They have authored several books and articles including:
          * Standard operating procedures for investigators
          * Standard operating procedures for sponsors and CROs
          * GCP - an indexed reference
Drawing on their wealth of experience, they have produced this enlightening and practical reference work which fills an educational gap in the understanding of GCP at all levels. Written in concise language simple enough to be accessible to those new in the field, the dozens of real-life stories and detailed case studies at the end of each chapter make the book an invaluable resource for the more experienced, highlighting what can go wrong in a clinical study: A study of prostate cancer in the UK - An investigator brochure was not provided. The company argued that a brochure was unnecessary because the drug was already marketed. Indeed it was - for hypertension! A study of cardiovascular surgery in the UK - The consent dates were changed (by overwriting) to indicate that the patients had provided consent before the study started. The original dates post-dated the start of the study. A study of hypertension in Germany - The investigator brochure predated the study by nine years! Checklists are provided throughout the book to help monitors, auditors and investigators ensure that nothing important is overlooked. The authors present the topic of GCP with remarkable clarity, insight and enthusiasm emphasizing that this code of practice was not designed to make studies more difficult for investigators or more expensive for sponsors and CROs but, in the final analysis, to ensure the safety and well-being of study participants and future patients who will benefit from well-conducted, GCP-compliant studies.

          Book Description

Achieving commercial success through innovation is highly desirable, but difficult to achieve in practice. 500f product development costs are likely to result in a failed product and in some sectors, such as FMCGs, this figure is more like 75%.

          What is the problem?
Typically, out of nine month's product development cycle, only two weeks are devoted to the generation of ideas and creative design - the "front end". This is the missing link - insufficient idea generation and creativity management, or the pre-development phase, can lead to the failure of the product.

So, what can you do to avoid product failure?
Requirements Capture is the "front end". It is the processs by which the needs, preferences and requirements of individuals and groups significant to product development are researched and identified. Requirements cature defines:
          * Customer, user and market requirements
          * Design requirements
          * Technical requirements
The requirements capture model constitutes three phases:
          * Information gathering
          * Information transformation
          * Requirements generation

In this book, Margaret Bruce and Rachel Cooper present and explain requirements capture in a step-by-step, practical guide that will enable you to plan and implement the process successfully within your organisation. Whether you produce food products or technically complex products, this book will be an invaluable asset in assisting your product development process.

          Customer Reviews:

          1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2001-02-24

While offering many ways available for requirements capture, the author leaves each chapter with no recommeded approach to pursue. The reader is left to decide how to proceed. I would prefer a more biased view on successful methods.
