e-book beware.......2002-12-13
I called Adobe twice and they said they don't support the e-Book reader! I checked their user forums at (...)and there are three other people with the same problem. I can't believe Amazon(.com) and Adobe sell a product neither one supports!
How to get up and running when training assessment is wanted.......2002-08-01
A lot of the concepts have been presented in previous books, but here they are taken a step further when the authors give examples from their long experience within the field. Downloadable forms, worksheets, and checklists (at the publishers website!!), that may be adapted to various needs is a definite valuable add-on for practitioners who do not have an urge "to do it all on their own".
The book starts off with taking a look at the need for measurement and evaluation and presents the ROI-process as a framework for 6 types of measures, (Kirkspatricks' 4, the ROI and intangible assets). Then all levels, possible measurements etc are presented throughout the book, finishing off with key implementation steps. It is all wrapped in the ROI-process, a step-by-step "receipe" for planning, building and implementing the evaluation process.
So when the top management want to know if a training program is worth the money . . .
Reading the book may get you on the track. It may help you talk the language of Money a way that senior management understands.
This is in addition to building better programs.
And it sure was practical with a digital version on my laptop, that way I bing it with me whereever I go; really conveniant when being a consultant - -

Health Measurement Scales: A Practical Guide to Their Development and Use (Oxford Medical Publications)
David L. Streiner , and Geoffrey R. Norman Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0198528477 |
Book Description
This is the new edition of the highly successful practical guide for clinicians developing tools to measure subjective states, attitudes or non-tangible outcomes in their patients. It is widely used by people from many disciplines, who have only a limited knowledge of statistics. This thoroughly updated edition of Health Measurement Scales, Third Edition gives more details on cognitive requirements in answering questions, and how this influences scale development. There is now an expanded discussion of generalizability theory, a completely revised chapter on Item Response Theory and many revisions are included, based on the latest research findings. These features combine to provide the most up-to-date guide to measuring scale development available. It synthesizes the theory of scale construction with practical advice, culled from the literature and the authors' experience, about how to develop and validate measurement scales to be used in the health sciences. The theory goes into issues of reliability, generalizability theory, validity, the measurement of change, the cognitive requirements of answering questions, and item response theory. Practical issues cover devising the items, biases that may affect the responses, pre-testing and weeding out poorly performing items, combining items into scales, setting cut points, and the practical issues of using scales in various ways, such as face-to-face interviews; mailed or telephone-administered surveys; and over the internet. One chapter also discusses some of the ethical issues that scale developers and users should be aware of. Appendices lead the reader to other readings; sources of already developed scales and items; and a very brief introduction to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.Customer Reviews:

Medical Writing in Drug Development: A Practical Guide for Pharmaceutical Research
ROBERT J. BONK Manufacturer: Haworth Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0789004496 |
Customer Reviews:
Useful for a newcomer to the clinical trial environment.......2001-05-04
Not a practical guide, more a manifesto !.......1998-04-18
This book is a manifesto, or one (alternative) philosophy, for the role of the medical writer in a pharmaceutical company. As such, its greatest achievement will be to attract people with talent into an occupation that is sorely in need of more and better writers. If this book stimulates under-graduates or graduates to explore this profession, then it will have made a significant, contribution to pharmaceutical research.
However, this book falls far short of being a practical guide. It is not, nor does it claim to be, a style guide; this is not a deficiency in itself. But to be a practical guide, there is much more that it needs to consider: how do medical writers multi-task, and manage their inevitably numerous assignments all at varying degrees of completion ? What should one look for in word processing software, and is this the same for everybody ? How can one enhance one's interactions with journal editors ? What are the relevant professional guilds and associations, and what are their courses and credentials like ? These are a few of the practical things, outside questions of style, that medical writers need to work inside the pharmaceutical industry.
The document templates provided (and lauded in the book's advertising) are poor. The regulatory documents should have followed closely the ICH or FDA guidelines (neither is new). A reprinted, stellar example of a published paper, with some illuminating commentary, and even some succes!sive stages of drafting, would have been an asset.
The initial sections of this book attempt to teach about the drug development process. Unless this can be done more thoroughly (and preferably by someone who has actually developed drugs), this description is inadequate to equip a medical writer in a pharmaceutical company. The descriptions are out of date and garbled in places. There are medical writers who indeed significantly contribute to drug development in the way that Dr. Bonk envisages, but they know a lot more than this about how new drugs are discovered and approved.
Lesser criticisms include the production of this book. At a little over 100 loosely worded pages it is not inexpensive. But its printing is cheap, and the figures were especially poorly printed in my copy. The figures, too, were often redundant; for example, the "pyramids" of the components of a medical journal manuscript were especially irrelevant.
In summary, this book is unique in giving a sound philosophy for the medical writer in a pharmaceutical company. As a practical guide (its stated claim) it is a real failure. This reviewer now understands why its plaudits were written by Professors of English in liberal arts schools, and not by experienced pharmaceutical industry personnel.

Balancing supply and demand.......2005-05-25
Fairly comprehensive and EZ to understand.......2001-03-24
Comprehensive and wonderfully written........1998-09-18
Contents include the mechanics of master scheduling, managing the MPS in various manufacturing environments (make-to-stock, make-to-order, etc.), planning bills, finishing schedules, capacity planning, demand management, and system implementation. Key points are punctuated by a running fictional account of master scheduling in action -- with all the personalities and politics that bear on this essential task.
Proud presents the vast material in a logical and entertaining manner. Detailed computational examples are provided for many of the situations a master scheduler will face. Proud is not afraid to depart from standard APICS language or teachings when appropriate -- but he does clearly identify when he has done so. Perhaps most significant is his exceptional grasp of the human relations and management issues involved. He shows that master scheduling is more than just crunching numbers.
Highly recommended as preparation for the APICS Master Planning exam.

Intercultural Interactions: A Practical Guide (Cross Cultural Research and Methodology)
Richard W. Brislin , Kenneth Cushner , and Craig Cherrie Manufacturer: Sage Publications, Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0803925581 |
Book Description
Cross-cultural orientation programmes are designed to prepare people who are about to interact extensively with others from very different cultural backgrounds. Programme goals include development of better intercultural relations, smoother adjustment to problems and minimization of stress. In this volume a set of training materials has been developed that can form the basis of various cross-cultural orientation programmes. The materials are based on the assumption that there are personal experiences shared by people who live and work in cultures other than their own. These experiences include anxiety, disconfirmed expectancies, ingroup-outgroup distinctions, confrontation with one's own prejudices and attributions about others' behaviour.Customer Reviews:
excellent resource for teachers and cross-cultural trainers.......2003-11-07
An excellent practical guide.......2003-06-23
The 'culture assimilator' technique requires the trainee to read short
case studies, or critical incidents, that present culture clashes
between individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Trainees are
typically asked to select from a range of alternative explanations for
the incident. Through the process of discussing in groups, attempting
to draw a conclusion or discover underlying concepts, trainees learn
how and why people make judgements concerning the cause of behaviour.
The first third of the book provides a broad definition of
intercultural interaction and the issues involved at the point of
cultural misunderstanding (misattribution process). How the culture
assimilator facilitates the development of a more sophisticated,
layered understanding of cultural behaviour rounds out the
introduction.
The middle section of the books contains a substantial
bulk of critical incidents and their accompanying explanatory essays,
which cover 18 major themes that reflect the places and situations
where people are most likely to encounter difficulties (workplace, in
the family, education and schooling, settling in and adjusting,
socialising events, returning home, etc.).
The last third of the book looks at the application of the critical
incidents for an understanding of the emotional consequences of
culture clash, and provides further background for 'knowledge areas'
required to respond effectively to many every day behaviours.
For especially teachers and trainers this book is a rich source of
material to supplement courses or seminars, and a rare step-by-step
analysis of the development and use of a typical method of training
intercultural sensitivity. The authors guide the teacher and trainer
through the stages of administering the 'culture assimilator' using
sample incidents, and provide clear guidelines on how to construct or
tailor critical incidents key to their learners' understanding of
cultural concepts.
The book, both as informational background and practical skills
training tool, can be used for diverse groups such as international
businessmen, teachers and teacher education students, psychology
professors, cross-cultural trainers, and even health care
professionals. The critical incident method can be adapted along
culture-specific or culture-general lines, into role-plays, to
introduce a topic as a key point in understanding more complex
concepts.
