Book Description
No other text provides such comprehensive information about pediatric practice for the occupational therapy student and practitioner. Organized by nine frames of reference, it provides a method of combining theory and practice that makes theoretical material clearly relevant to function, thus helping the reader to conceptualize and initiate intervention. New to this edition are two additional frames of reference, four new case studies, and numerous illustrations and photographs.

Teaching In a Foreign Country?.......2002-05-09
I am teaching a course on pediatric occupational therapy in Germany. This book has been a life-saver for me, since it has given me clear definitions of major frames of reference in use around the world. I am looking forward to the newest edition!
An excellent resource.......2001-08-23
This book provides an excellent guide for moving from theory to practice! Each frame of reference is clearly delineated and the application to practice section of each frame of reference demonstrates how it can be used. It is a critical resource for providing theory based interventions. Good background information is provided for becoming a good, well rounded pediatric practitioner.
Book Description
This clinical reference is written for practitioners working in early intervention programs and for students training to be pediatric OTs. Clinical strategies and application in practice will appeal to experienced therapists, and the introductory chapters offer a review of theory and background suitable for either the therapist new to early intervention or the student in the OT curriculum.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2000-05-17
This is an excellent resource for clinicians working in early intervention. Good diagnostic and treatment information with this population in mind. I was able to put the ideas into practice easily with a great response from the families. I recommend this to anyone working in Early Intervention or thinking about starting.

Book Description
The long-awaited revision of the only book on game play available for mental health professionals
Not only is play a pleasurable, naturally occurring behavior found in humans, it is also a driving force in our development. As opposed to the unstructured play often utilized in psychotherapy, game playing invokes more goal-directed behavior, carries the benefits of interpersonal interaction, and can perform a significant role in the adaptation to one's environment.
This landmark, updated edition of Game Play explores the advantages of using games in clinical- and school-based therapeutic interventions with children and adolescents. This unique book shows how playing games can promote socialization, encourage the development of identity and self-esteem, and help individuals master anxiety-while setting the stage for deeper therapeutic intervention in subsequent sessions.

Game play.......2001-03-12
This is the second edition of an important book, first published in 1986 and edited by Charles Schaefer, professor of psychology from the Fairleigh Dickinson University and Steven Reid, who is in private practice in New York. Games are a very important part of child development and there are some of us, who will never stop playing games, even in adulthood. Games can be played by the person for his or her own enjoyment, but it is also a tool of communication between the professional or therapist and the child, adolescent or client. It is essential in play therapy and the first edition was very helpful in the new classification of how games were used in therapy to further development and emotional growth: communication games, problem-solving games, ego-enhancing games and socialization games. The first edition catalyzed specialization in the field of game play therapy and this second edition is devided into five parts: Games to elicit communication and fantasy expression, using traditional games in child therapy, game play for children in crisis, therapeutic games for children with ADHD and teaching social skills through games. This second text is therefore an illustration of how this field has undergone a specialization in evaluation and problem solving of many problems of childhood and adolescence. I especially found the chapter by Steven Reid on "Therapeutic use of card games with learning disabled children" and the chapter by Billie Corder on "Using games and game play in group therapy with sexually abused children and adolescents" worth reading both due to its review, case story and practical approach. This textbook is recommended to mental health clinicians (psychologists, social workers, nurses, psychiatrists) working with children and adolescents.

Highly recommended as a user-friendly reference........2007-03-06
Written by Jeanine G. Coleman, M. Ed., The Early Intervention Dictionary: A Multidisciplinary Guide to Terminology is the updated third edition of a straightforward, practical definitive reference for medical professionals and parents alike. Each entry consists of a brief (from one sentence to one full paragraph) definition of a medical or scientific term concerning medical and development issues, features, and abnormalities present in infants and children. The Early Intervention Dictionary is accessible to readers of all backgrounds, and covers everything from "abrachia" (congenital absence of arms) to "Zero Reject" (The principle that no child with a disability should be refused a free, appropriate education if other children the same age are being served). Highly recommended as a user-friendly reference.
Must-Have for New Parents of Children with Special Needs.......2003-01-17
This book was our trusted guide and friend through the first years of our child's life. We took this book with us to every new medical and therapeutic appointment, and it enabled us to quickly become knowledgable about our son's condition. I give this book as a special gift to welcome new "exceptional" families to our circle.
Highly recommended.
Excellent reference.......2001-02-18
This book is an excellent reference tool. As a student seeking certification in early intervention, I find this book to be extremely helpful. This book will guide you through termonology and provide you with a wealth of information.

Book Description
The practice of OT continues to be influenced by greater awareness of the needs of children with disabilities, expansion of the theory and practice of psychology, medical science and occupational therapy, and the impact of twentieth century technology on the diagnosis, care and treatment of children. This book has been written to present current principles and practice underlying Occupational Therapy intervention with children. It is designed for use by students and newly-qualified occupational therapists. However, other professionals in education and social care, and parents, may also find it of value to gain an understanding of the role of Occupational Therapy with children.
Customer Reviews:
Pediatric therapy.......2000-05-12
This text provides excellent information on a variety of difficulty to find topics like pediatric cardiac interventions, burn care and oncology. The authors provide excellent information on a variety of pediatric dysfunctions organized into body systems. The chapters provide excellent current information about body system structure and physiology, as well as practical applications for the occupational therapist. The chapter on the cognitive system provides one of the best orientations to mental retardation interventions I have ever seen. The biggest limitation of this book is its structure. It is organized by body systems and has specific cases illustrating disorders in these systems. This makes better as a textbook than as a reference book.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive Resource for Peds OT.......2006-02-22
While I agree with the previous reviewer that the book is slow reading, I have many positive things to say about it as well. The book has a plethora of resources for students and practitioners alike, including readings, websites, etc. to augment eval/tx or to further explore a topic. Also, the fact that it's a brand-new edition means that everything is evidence-based and backed up by the latest research, meaning that what you read is best-practice. The book is also very comprehensive and covers all the "traditional" areas of OT plus new burgeoning areas of practice.
Not the easiest reading for a textbook........2005-12-06
This is a very informative book and I will probably use it as a strong reference in years to come. It is not, however, a very easily read textbook. Some areas are repetative and make for very slow reading. Many times the author backs up her explanations citing studies. This is excellent in a reference book, however, as an introduction to an area of OT, it makes learning the subject matter laborious.
The book title says it all: "OT for Children".......2001-05-24
This resource provides an overview of many conditions found in pediatric treatment. The reviews of developmental progressions of all ADLs, pre-writing, fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, and other skills are presented both in concise, outline form and in paragraph form for more details. All chapters are well-organized, and focused on OT practice, while the section by Exner on the Development of Hand Skills is exceptional. This is a MUST HAVE resource for OT working in pediatrics.
essential reading.......2000-02-17
As a Paediatric Occupational Therapist I find this book a valuable resource in my department.
