Book Description
This accessible, new reference work shows how and why RF energy is created within a printed circuit board and the manner in which propagation occurs. With lucid explanations, this book enables engineers to grasp both the fundamentals of EMC theory and signal integrity and the mitigation process needed to prevent an EMC event. Author Montrose also shows the relationship between time and frequency domains to help you meet mandatory compliance requirements placed on printed circuit boards.
Using real-world examples the book features:
- Clear discussions, without complex mathematical analysis, of flux minimization concepts
- Extensive analysis of capacitor usage for various applications
- Detailed examination of components characteristics with various grounding methodologies, including implementation techniques
- An in-depth study of transmission line theory
- A careful look at signal integrity, crosstalk, and termination
Customer Reviews:
reduce your EMI .......2006-03-06
If you are a circuit designer building a commercial product, then it is necessary to minimise the RF emissions. But many texts on circuitry gloss over the details of how to do this. Perhaps considered too uninteresting.
Montrose offers a detailed contrast. But readily accessible to anyone with an electrical engineering degree. Hence you can read tips on how to reduce the loop area on a PCB. Indeed, he suggests that you can use surface mount components, since they usually possess smaller loop area.
There are also recent innovations. Like grounding a heatsink for a microprocessor. The latest CPUs often dissipate enormous amounts of heat. But hitherto, little attention was often paid to actually grounding the requisite heatsink.
The book also devotes an entire chapter to the crucial idea of an image plane. It points out possible problems with an implementation, and how to solve these.
Misleading.......2002-03-28
This book is well oganized and easy to use, but the information is often incorrect. We have found it to cause more problems than solve. Paul Clayton's book come much more highly recommended.
EMC Made Simple.......2000-08-23
Practical explanation of printed circuit board emissions, routing, trace termination ... covers all aspects of the printed circuit board. A must for the PCB engineer's reference shelf.
Book Description
In all possible industrial, military and household/personal applications, the number of digital devices operating with data rates of hundreds of Megabits, using processor chips with Gigahertz clocks, has increased astronomically. At the same time, a myriad of popular RF receivers like portable telephones, laptop PCs with integrated wireless modems, wireless Internet, and other electronic devices, are becoming ubiquitous, such that the number of sensitive, licit receivers operating within a square kilometer of an urban area can be counted in tens of thousands. In the crowded space that they share, the conjunction of both events is increasing the number of potential interference situations, especially in the upper VHF and UHF regions where spurious radiations are most difficult to contain. There is, in addition, a growing, although controversial, concern about the possible health hazard caused by long exposure to near fields of low power radio transmitters. All these aspects result in a continuous effort for lowering RF radiations.
This new edition of
Controlling Radiated Emissions by Design retains the step-by-step approach for incorporating EMC into every new design, from the ground up. Quite different from other classical EMC books, it approaches the problem from a development engineer's viewpoint, starting with the selection of quieter IC technologies, their implementation into a noise-free printed circuit layout, and the gathering of all these into a low radiation packaging, including I/O filtering, connectors and cables considerations.
Equally far from a cookbook of recipes, all guidelines are supported by thorough, but relatively easy and comprehensive calculated examples, allowing a quantitative design, instead of purely qualitative. New to this edition is material on surface mount techniques, IC's ground-bounce, random-versus-periodic frequency spectra and recent progress in low cost ferrite and filter components. Also included is detailed information on radiation from high-speed chips (e.g. Pentium >200 MHz) and the efforts by some manufacturers to reduce it. The book has numerous tables, all of which have been updated to reflect the latest changes in the field, including a brief overview of the U.S. and worldwide emission tests.
Controlling Radiated Emissions by Design is an invaluable tool for helping design engineers, EMC specialists and technicians develop more efficient and economical control of emissions.

Customer Reviews:
Poorly made, poor service.......2006-03-10
My son recieved Battery Science for Christmas. The first prong broke off the motor the first time he tried to use it, the second one broke off while I was trying to fix it. This all happened within five minutes of opening it. This set is useless without the motor.
I've written the company twice asking for a replacement, and they refuse. I live in a small town and no one locally sells this product, so I've been unable to return it.
I would not recommend this product to anyone!
Battery Science: Widgets that Work.......2006-02-25
I used this to teach my Webelos Scouts (age 10) how electricity works and make things go. They mostly had fun using the fan to make horrible noises cutting pieces of paper, but they got the point of the experiment.
Requires fine motor skills; may be difficult for some to do without adult help.
This book is great!.......2005-12-29
I got this book for my 11th birthday and I absolutely love it. My friend and I spent an entire day building many of the projects. The submersible worked well, but I had trouble getting the hovercraft to lift off. It's also possible to make your own designs work well. It's cool that they included a motor with gills so it can go under water.
Great Intro to Electricity.......2005-01-31
My five year old son bought this book and it has proved to be fantastic. He cannot do the experiments by himself yet- we've been big helpers. But he has learned a lot about how electricity and circuits work. With this kit he has learned that a circuit is a loop, how electricity moves and how to make switches. The motor is great fun just to run on it's own. I would recommend adding the Usborne Book of Batteries and Magnets when you run through the activities in here. The Klutz kit provides you with ALMOST all the items you need to do the additional experiments in the Usborne book. I would recommend this book for any kid who has an interest in electricity, motors or just plain making things go.
Klutz Battery Science is a big hit with homeschoolers!.......2004-10-19
With very few supplies you have to find (cardboard, soda bottle caps, binder clips) on your own this is a terrific educational fun book/kit for children of both sexes!
The best part is that children are encouraged to experiment. When my nearly 8 year old son made "The Impossible Project", he got the lightbulb to light up but he couldn't get it to shut off. After undoing it and rebuilding it a second time he found success!

Book Description
The book provides both the theoretical and the applied background needed to predict magnetic fields. The theoretical presentation is reinforced with over 60 solved examples of practical engineering applications such as the design of magnetic components like solenoids, which are electromagnetic coils that are moved by electric currents and activate other devices such as circuit breakers. Other design applications would be for permanent magnet structures such as bearings and couplings, which are hardware mechanisms used to fashion a temporary connection between two wires.
This book is written for use as a text or reference by researchers, engineers, professors, and students engaged in the research, development, study, and manufacture of permanent magnets and electromechanical devices. It can serve as a primary or supplemental text for upper level courses in electrical engineering on electromagnetic theory, electronic and magnetic materials, and electromagnetic engineering.
Customer Reviews:
excellent reference book for those designing magnetic motors.......2004-02-10
Last year I was seeking a reference book on permanent magnetic motors. I found this book to be an excellent choice. The subject material includes magnetic materials and properties, leading into the various classes of permanent magnet materials, a good review of Maxwell's equations, which is used to lead into several useful analytical models, before closing with a review of permanent magnet devices and electromechanical devices. If the book had included problem sets at the end of each chapter, it would have ended up as an excellent graduate level textbook on the subject. As it is, the book will serve experienced technical folks well, either as a refresher on material already known, or as a method of teaching new material in all its gory detail.
Book Description
This single source encyclopedic volume contains the answers to numerous complex shielding problems. It integrates basic concepts with hands-on techniques and practical recommendations on a broad range of EMC and shielding-related subjects: the role and significance of the shielding discipline, electromagnetic energy coupling and transfer mechanisms, shielding cables, enclosures, systems, sound shielding design, evaluation, measurement practices and other timely shielding topics. The handbook suggests original methods of cost-effective and optimal design selections and solutions to shielding systems and their elements. It spans all shielding levels: single chip, printed circuit board, cables and cable assemblies, whole products and systems - up to complex networks.
This new handbook is based on more than 30 years of the author's experience in the electromagnetic shielding and EMC field. It significantly expands upon
Cable Shield for Electromagnetic
Compatibility - a previous book by the same author. A number of important new `non-cable' topics are included, and a more general introduction to the subject is given, in addition to providing a wealth of detailed and useful material. It will be a resource for answers to numerous difficult shielding-related questions, as well as especially valuable to the EMI and EMC community at large.
Professional engineers, researchers and students interested in electromagnetic interference, compatibility and its biological safety will find this handbook invaluable.

Modern Magnetic Materials: Graduate Text.......2007-10-14
This book has been used for several years in the graduate materials program at Carnegie Mellon University. It is very popular with the students. It has also found a following with the undrgraduates who have done research or advanced reading in magnetic materials. The book offeres clear physical insights and a discussion of contemporary magnetics applications. Highly recommended.
Excellent reference work and study guide for magnetism.......2003-08-11
This is an immensely important compilation of the state-of-
the-art quantum electronic interpretation of the physics of magnetism. Doctor O'Handley has masterfully organized his lecture notes and has produced a magnum opus.
I had the extraordinary good fortune of attending his lecture series at the University of Florida in 1994. The class was primarily for materials engineering graduate students, but I was allowed to take the class because I was doing research in magnetic devices for electrical engineering. Even though the physics involved was at a higher level than I was used to, Dr. O'Handley was able to communicate the necessary concepts in a lucid manner.
His intelligible explanations in the lecture hall are repeated and expanded in this well-crafted volume.
If you are interested in the science of magnetism from an electrical engineering, or material science, perspective, I wholeheartedly recommend purchasing this book.
Modern Magnetic Materials: Principles and Applications.......2001-12-01
This book will take you from basic academic knowledge about magnetism to a proficient understanding of the most recent advances in magnetic materials and devices. This book is well very organized and written in a concise manner. Dr. O'Handley has earned our congratulations on both scope and quality for this book. Graduate students, researchers, engineers, theorists, experimenters and other newcomers to the field will find this book an excellent entry to the field as well as a handy reference. The book is one of the best text in the area of applied magnetism.
This invaluable book should certainly be present in the library of any department or institute carrying out magnetism R&D work. In other words, it deserves to be on the shelves of any lab or research institute library. I strongly recommend this book to every student and teacher who intends studying or teaching magnetism.
Modern Magnetic Materials.......2000-04-04
This is the book which contains all about the magnetism practically in use. From the basic theory of magnetism to the practical use, e.g., magnetic recording materials, surface and thin films. This is the best book treating magnetism practically. But this deos not contain the rigorous thoery using second quantization, e.g., Hubbard Hamiltonian and Anderson Impurity. That is, this book is the introduction for graduate students majoring in experimental condensed matter physicis - materials and materials science for practical use.

A high-level overview of advanced CEM techniques.......2003-07-18
This book is a summary of research projects on advanced computational electromagnetics projects that were performed at the University of Illinois in the last ten years.
This is not a bad book, and touches the concepts at a high level and gives you a flavor of what they can do. There would still be however a lot of hard work on the reader's part to learn about and implement what is talked about here.
Some warnings: If you are not already very familiar with advanced electromagnetics analysis and computational algorithms this book will lose you very quickly. It covers topics such as the Fast Multipole Method at a very high level and expects the reader to have a strong background in electromagnetic waves and subjects such as the electromagnetic Method of Moments. These are Ph.D.-level topics at a bare minimum.
This book is of most interest to those invoved in the design and implementation of electromagnetic solver codes. If you are an undergraduate in EM, or just a casual reader of things electromagnetic, you're better off without this one.
