Aimed at the working Visual C++ game developer, 3D Game Engine Design provides a tour of mathematical techniques for 3-D graphics, and the source code that's used to implement them in state-of-the-art video game engines. If you work in the game industry (or would like to), this book will serve you well, because it delivers excellent best practices for algorithms and programming techniques that'll help your software keep up with the competition.
This text is a virtual encyclopedia of expertise that's based on the author's own work and research in the gaming industry. It provides the mathematical notation, algorithms, and C++ code (on the accompanying CD-ROM) that are needed to build fast and maintainable game engines. Early sections start with the basics, with the math that's used to work with common 3-D objects (like spheres and boxes). Highlights include a high-powered review of quaternion algebra--in many cases, the preferred way to transform 3-D data.
The chapters on graphics pipelines explain the math that's behind representing and rendering a 3-D world in 2-D with intervening effects like lighting and texture mapping. A variety of current algorithms are provided for representing 3-D scenes, efficient picking (which allows a programmer to determine the object in a 3-D world that has been selected), and collision detection (in which objects collide virtually). In the game software of today, curves--and not individual triangles or polygons--often are used to represent 3-D objects. Algorithms that are used to turn curves into rendered surfaces are provided, too.
Later sections look at the current thinking about animation techniques for characters (including key frames, inverse kinematics, and skinning (in which digital skin is fitted over digital bone to create more realistic-looking movement)). How to represent terrain inside virtual worlds also is explained. The book closes with excellent material on such cutting-edge special effects as lens flare and projected shadows, which can add an extra level of realism to a video game. An appendix examines guidelines for designing object-oriented game software in C++.
Filled with mathematical insight and expert code that puts each principle or algorithm to work, 3D Game Engine Design provides an expert view of what goes into building a state-of-the-art game engine. --Richard Dragan

Book Description
A major revision of the international bestseller on game programming!
Graphics hardware has evolved enormously in the last decade. Hardware can now be directly controlled
through techniques such as shader programming, which requires an entirely new thought process of a
programmer. 3D Game Engine Design, Second Edition shows step-by-step how to make a shader-based graphics engine and how to tame the new technology. Much new material has been added, including more than twice the coverage of the essential techniques of scene graph management, as well as new methods for managing memory usage in the new generation of game consoles and portable game players. There are expanded discussions of collision detection, collision avoidance, and physics all challenging subjects for developers.
* Revision of the classic work on game engines the core of any game.
* Includes Wild Magic, a commercial quality game engine in source code that illustrates how to build a
real-time rendering system from the lowest-level details all the way to a working game.
* Fully revised and updated in 4 colors, including major new content on shader programming, physics,
and memory management for the next generation game consoles and portables.
Customer Reviews:
Poor pseudo-code.......2007-05-16
This book is fantastically comprehensive, though I bought it more for the CG algorithms than anything else.
My biggest gripe is with the pseudo-code. My C++ is not great, but I can get by - I found the code in general under-commented for a textbook. If you were writing software, it might be fine, but the purpose of the code is to explain the algorithms, and to work in concert with the text, which it does not. Furthermore, I found the text did not fill in the holes - I was left to try to figure out what Eberley was doing by going through the code. Possibly if I had read the whole thing through from cover to cover things would be clearer.
If you're just looking for an algorithm reference, you could do better.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2007-01-14
Are you a professional or student working in game development? If you are, then this book is for you. Author David H. Eberly has done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a book which focuses on the design of the scene graph management system and its associated rendering layer.
Eberly, begins this book by discussing the details of a rendering system, including transformations, camera models, culling and clipping, rastering, and issues regarding software versus hardware rendering and about specific graphics application programmer interfaces in use these days. In addition, the author discusses rendering from the perspective of actually writing all of the subsystems for a software renderer. He also takes a look at the essentials of organizing your data as a scene graph. Then, he focuses on specifically designed nodes and subsystems of the scene graph management system. The author then looks at some general concepts you see in attempting to have physical realism in a three-dimensional application. Next, he discusses a lot of mathematical detail for much of the source code you will find in Wild Magic. Then, he takes a brief look at the basic principles of object-oriented design and programming. The author continues by discussing memory management. Finally, he takes a look at a handful of sample shaders and the applications that use them.
This most excellent book is very much enhanced, describing the foundations for shader programming and how an engine can support it. Perhaps more importantly, the book is the most comprehensive reference available for the development of shader-based 3D graphics engines!
This book is not about "Game Engine Design".......2006-09-26
This book is not about "Game Engine Design" -- it's about algorithms that you may come across when writing a 3D game engine. There's very little treatment of "engine design" in this book.
Even though the title is misleading, it's still a great book if you're looking for a reference on 3D game engine algorithms.
Good, but not what you might expect.......2005-04-16
I read this a few years ago, and have referred back to it many times, but I only recently realized that I neglected to write a review of it.
This book is well-written and contains a lot of useful information. The author is one of the few people qualified to write a book of this nature, and he has done an admirable job. That said, the title is pretty misleading, since the book has very little to say about the design of a game engine. Instead, it focuses on implementation details and the math involved with them. Topics covered include geometrical methods, the graphics pipeline, tree-based scene graphics, intersections, collision detection, curves and surfaces, animation, terrain, spatial sorting (quad/octrees, portals, BSPs), special effects, object-oriented infrastructure, and numerical methods. The author doesn't gloss over anything, providing detailed mathematical derivations of how things work.
Unfortunately, the math is so heavy that unless you're already pretty familiar with the subject matter, you'll probably have a hard time with the book. Therefore, I think that the target audience is much smaller that the group that would be attracted by the title.
If you're involved in game engine development or just want to deepen your knowledge, I think you'll appreciate the fact that the author doesn't pull any punches. Otherwise, you'll probably be more interested in the author's new book 3D Game Engine Architecture, which was recently released.
Book Review.......2005-02-08
I have spent the past four years studying game development and have read many books on the subject. The technologies utilized in game development are extensive but most can be grouped into a small list, which is rendering, animation, modeling, collision detection, collision response, artificial intelligence, audio processing, input management and network communication. This book only contains technologies related to rendering, animation, and collision detection.
Eberly gives an in-depth look to game development and provides adequate solutions to every problem introduced. He does not cover every possible way each problem could be solved nor does he spend a lot of time introducing and defining each problem. Instead he assumes the reader has a general understanding of the problem and gives a quick review followed by one or two detailed solutions using the most common techniques. Eberly's writing style makes it easy to follow the accumulation of segments to the final solution. His math notation on the other hand was confusing at times. A few places he supplemented words with mathematical notation and allowed the math to do the explaining, which made it seem like he was unable to put it into words.
I have found this book to be very useful and have added it to my reference library of game development, but I would not recommend this book to someone just starting to study game development. For a reader to glean anything of use out of this book he would have to be experienced in object oriented programming, have a basic understanding of 3D rendering technologies and have a working knowledge of calculus and linear algebra.

Customer Reviews:
The one FX book to grab when you need to know it all!.......2006-04-21
After reading almost 50 books on the Forex Market and trading the markets live for a few years, I decided that Ms. Taylor's Mastering Foreign Exchange and Currency Options: A Practical Guide to the New Marketplace is the one Forex Book I would take with me if forced to select one. Why? Because it is the only book to somehow comprehensively cover topics as diverse as Currenex, the application of Technical Analysis to FX, Buy Side vs. Sell Side FX Dealer dynamics, Corporate Treasury Hedging, and of course a fairly essential history of both the economics of foreign exchange and the fundamentals relevant to trading it. The book is only 380 pages and most certainly does meet the needs of entry level traders. Intermediate traders or professionals will certainly find topics covered which prompt an occasional: " I didn't know that !". Again, Ms. Taylor has given us the essentials of both the theoretical dimensions of Foreign Exchange pricing both Spot, Futures, and Options AND the nitty, gritty incidentals of how the technology works to make the market happen. What most books on Forex fail to do - this book does achieve. Few Forex primers squarely place Spot Forex into the Inter-Bank context where it belongs. Few books adequately integrate information about Corporate Treasury concerns with the nature of Central Bank Intervention. Trading Forex on the Retail level without understanding CLS or the Flow Information available through Currenex is like Racing Nascar without knowing how to change a tire. Ms. Taylor's book achieves this through the gift of being able to simplify, coordinate, and render the essential of a topic without loss of rigor or information. Usually books achieving this are a dense read, but this book is not - and that is the work of a great teacher.
An ok book but not for the beginner.......2005-06-02
This book has a well written chapter on the economics of foreign exchange. This books' chapters on e-foreign exchange and innovations in e-fx are rather useless for the beginner and also outdated.
The chapters on technical analysis and the individual trainer are short and to the point. It's good information but not enough 'meat' to assist the individual to make better trades. More or the same information can be found in other books that also explain in more details.
There are several chapters that are mainly written for large institutional traders which I didnt find very useful other than getting a 'birds-eye' view from their position.
In my opinion, this book is more for intermediate traders but I wouldn't recommend it to beginners.

Book Description
This book is about using an 80mm refractor / 90mm Maksutov (such as a Helios 80 or Meade ETX90) as more than a "quick look" instrument, but rather something capable of use as an introduction to scientific observations. Emphasis is on measurement and discovery activities rather than on casual observing. There are two objectives to these activities: to re-enact the process of discovery and to provide amateur observers with the knowledge and skill that will help them make genuine contributions to the field of astronomy.
It is often said that users of small telescopes can conduct worthwhile scientific work, but ‘how’ is seldom explained except in the context of observations carried out by the most advanced amateur astronomers. This book provides the necessary introduction – derived from the author’s many year of experience in teaching the subject – that will be the starting point for serious work.
Users will find many activities and projects suitable for an 80mm refractor or 90mm reflector or Maksutov that have not been published elsewhere.

Customer Reviews:
Great ideas - Great Book.......2003-10-04
Keeping things organized and getting things done have always been difficult for me. I found Don's book very easy to read. It has some phenomenal tips and practical ideas that can be implemented right away. In today's hectic world, it is refreshing to find a book that helps to make life easier. I keep it by my nightstand and refer to it frequently, as it can be read straight through, or in bits and pieces by subject matter. The back of the book has a wonderful index that makes it easy to find what you're looking for. There is also a preferred reading list and a list of useful web sites. I recommend it for anyone who needs more organization in their life.
Just Do It!.......2002-05-29
Don Wetmore's "Guide to Organizing your Life" is a well-thought out, thorough and easy-to-read time management book. If you read and implement even a quarter of the strategies, you would have many more hours in your day and much less stress as a result!
One of the most useful aspects of this book is its interactive exercises: the reader identifies their own strengths and weaknesses and is then provided with concrete, practical ways to develop better habits. Readers are empowered to live on purpose and always be thinking "what's in it. . . for me!"
I personally liked the weblinks that provided me with more or related information about each of the topics. The book is colorful with many photos that encourage a reader to keep reading.
I highly receommend this book for everyone: those who have never taken a time management course before AND those who have. It is a thorough book with lots for everyone.
KISS Guide to Organizing Your Life.......2002-01-12
Great book! I also took a course by the author and it was great.
The book is easy to read and has some good advise that i s easy to implement and use in everyday life.
Enjoy the journey to a better organized life.......2002-01-01
As a professional speaker and author of several books on presentation skills and public speaking, I have always had a keen appreciation for the management of time. In fact, I had the privilege of participating in one of Don Wetmore's three day programs about 10 years ago, and still use his strategies today in my own business. My most recent book, 10 Days to More Confident Public Speaking (Warner Books, 2001) would not have been completed on time if I hadn't been well organized. As an international professional speaker, I spend a lot of time traveling and I know from first hand experience that there is a correlation between good time management and career success. Th opposite is true as well. Failing to manage your time will limit your opportunities for success.
Beyond career success, however, managing your time effectively permits you to do more of the things you want to do and enjoy a better quality of life every day-both at work and at home. The K.I.S.S. Guide to Organizing Your Life guides you along the path to more effective time management, starting with the important step of balancing your life. After all, good time management isn't based on doing the wrong things quicker-that just gets you nowhere faster. Instead, this guide show you how to achieve better balance in every aspect of your life.
Don has taken a complex topic and boiled it down to a simple step-by-step plan that can be readily implemented by all readers-and I like that. There's enough complexity in your life already; the last thing you need is an even more complex and cumbersome system to manage it! Luckily, Don has devised a easy-to-implement, 20-step action plan to organize your life. In fact, if you follow one of Don'd steps each weekday for the next four weeks, you will be surprised by the enormous strides you'll make toward managing-and enjoying-tasks and responsibilities that may have once seemed overwhelming.
The methods Don writes about, and uses every day, are not lofty theory, but, rather, practical, common sense tools and techniques that he has tested himself; If they work for him-and they can work for you, too.

Ms. Muster writes: Whether you like it or not, you are the person in charge of your life. You are the main decision-maker, planner, manager and scheduler. You ae the only one who can make your dreams come true.
All in all, that's a pretty good summary of a life philosophy.
Ms. Muster reports that she reached a point in her life where being a working mother was causing more stress than she coudl stand. She then started to apply the techniques she had learned in the business environment to her personal life. The single word to describe the technique she follows is 'ORGANIZE.'
At work Ms. Muster is a computer programmer. Perhaps it is the way computers work. They do exactly what you tell them to do, not at all what you want them to do. A program must be organized to operate.
Looking at the book, I suspect that she has had a lot of the little courses that companies give their employees. She shows how to apply techniques such as picking a target for what you want, creating schedules and priorities, time management, analyzing your own goals to be able to reach them.
This is a series of techniques that work for her. They are proven techniques. If applied they will work for home as well as business.

I really loved this book!! I had a spare room that was drowning in clutter. I used some of the techniques for cleaning out clutter and for the first time in years I can actually use that room again!

After reading this book I was able to influence my husband and daughter to throw out and organize thier things. It really helped to make my home more spacious and enjoyable. I take my hat off to Ms. Muster- she writes in an engaging and concise manner so that it is easy to learn to organize your life.
