Left feeling so-so.......2007-09-12
First off, let me say that if you are buying this book as a reference manual, then I think it deserves 5 stars. If you are using it to supplement your studies for something like A+ certification, its not the best for that. The problem lies in the fact that, like another reviewer here pointed out, he deals way to much with history. I feel like this took away a lot from trying to learn from the book as it became a boring read after a while. I dont care about computers from 20 years ago. I want to know recent things. A HUGE problem I have is their website. NONE of the video archives work. This was a huge selling point for me and was/is a tremendous disappointment. I contacted the webmaster 3 weeks ago and the problem hasnt been fixed. They all lead to a 404 error-page not found. That is a joke and an outrage.
upgrading and repairing pcs.......2007-09-11
This is a great book for my college course! I have enjoyed the book so far..thank you for the great item!
Great.......2007-07-16
It has everything I need to know about how to fix computer and Laptop problems.
Excellent Core Reference.......2007-07-05
I avoided this gargantuan book for several years because it seemed so intimidating . Then I took a class in PC repair and this was the textbook. Wow! did I learn a lot, not just about how to PCs work, but about how valuable this book is. Now it's my primary reference when I have a question about my system, or other systems or components. This has been Scott Mueller's life and he has done a splendid job of simplifying the mysteries of PC hardware for me. The book is not perfect. There's a lot of information here you'll never use, but there's a lot you will. Take it paragraph by paragraph, page by page and depending upon your interest, you will find it very illuminating. Information on older systems and components is purged with each updated edition, so the older editions have value for hobbyists who want to maintain older systems. Comes with a supplemental DVD which is also very worthwhile.
Positive Experience.......2007-06-27
Book was latest edition with several prior editions having been acquired as needed. Latest technology is added to each annual edition and working with recent technology requires the latest edition. I was performing a major upgrade of my home computer when the book was ordered and it proved invaluable when problems were encountered after assembly. Possible issues were identified and eliminated until the information helped isolate the boot-up problem and assist in installation of new Windows Vista Operating System software to get the computer functioning again. This book is a must for anyone who gets inside the computer to make changes and upgrades.

Plethora of Knowledge.......2007-10-16
This book covers so much of PC hardware information. It will take a while for people who consider themselves "above average" users, but even if you don't complete the A+ exam, there is tons of useful information.
Take your time.......2007-09-10
One chapter at a time. I recommend that you read the quizes then the chapter to find key points easier. Great study material! Sybex is always the way to go.
Informative.......2007-07-12
The book is quite informative and up-to-date. It covers all new A+ examination areas (really comprehensive). The bundled stuffs are very helpful too. It comes with lots of practice exams. The electronic flashcards are handy and refreshing. With the bundled compact disc, you can read your book anywhere, anytime with any portable device that support .pdf file format. Good book.
Thank God..........2007-06-24
Finally an A+ book that doesn't drown itself in tech terms without actually explaining what it is they are trying to convey. This is as user-friendly as one could hope to get in a study guide. It doesn't go over one's head, if it the subject matter does the author brings it down to earth.
The companion CD is pretty good as well, offering the whole book in .pdf form for downloading on one's iPod or PDA.
A+ Complete Study Guide - Sybex.......2007-05-17
To begin the book is well organized and well written. The flow of the book is easy to understand, and easy to take notes from. The CD-Rom includes an electronic copy of the book (which in my opinion is something that all paper copies should come with these days) which is very helpful for working professionals whom commute.
Cons: Unfortunately the book will miss a thing here or there as it relates directly to the exam itself. As an example: You will find that the study questions, while good at reinforcing the material you just read, do not line up with the flow, format or difficulty of the actual exam questions. They are really there to cement what you've just read and reinforce that to you.
Another example is the Professionalism and Communications section does not go over enough material in detail. It rather uses broad terms and concepts to go over that particular domain.
Conclusion: I feel this is a very good primary study guide. I would recommend however that you use supliments to your studying such as Transcender exams to help prep you for the actual testing enviornment as well as the Exam Cram book to compliment and really drive home the material.
The book is definately worth the purchase and you will be 75%-80% read to take the exam after completetion of studying.

Great library addition!.......2007-03-20
This book is a handy reference to have in any tech's library. It teaches you about not only the history of Windows, but focuses on the later versions of the operating system without totally neglecting the older versions.
It's coverage of command-line tips and tricks is excellent; however I found it lacking in that it didn't cover two areas: (1) It did not cover why the System Restore feature sometimes fails and how to prevent that occurrence; and (2) it only mentioned the SFC utility in the appendix of programs that come with Windows, and that is one program that needs to be gone into depth a bit more.
Some of the sections on scripting could have been written to be easier to follow for those new to the subject, but overall I still have to give this book an excellent rating!
It definitely was worth the money, and I am overall pleased with the purchase!
If you're having Windows trouble, or Planning to ...........2006-03-15
I got in this imposing 700+ page book, looked at it a little and put it on my desk to get to later. Well, you know how that works. Then I was trying to delete some files. And I got a message that the directory was messed up and to run CHKDSK. What's that, and how do you run it, and can I run it while I'm doing other things. So I picked up the book. The index sent me to page 513. There's CHKDSK. Here's how you run it. But it doesn't run under Windows, you have to schedule it to run and then re-boot windows, and then you get a message saying that this might take a long time. It worked and I could go delete the files.
You know, I think I need to read the whole book. I flipped through it some more while waiting on CHKDSK to run and there's a lot of good stuff here. I particularly liked the idea that it talks about what's included with Windows (many versions) but also includes some commentary on various third party programs that work better, faster or do things that the standard software doesn't do.
The book is in reference format, it's easy to look up things that you need to do. And like with CHKDSK, the things you find are in a section dealing with similar problems.
So while CHKDSK was running I turned to the front of the book. Surprisingly, it's even pretty interesting. And I'm not big on computer books. If you're having trouble with Windows, or planning to have trouble, this is the book I recommend.

Upgrading and Repairing Microsoft Windows

The New Jersey Computer Club (NJCC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about computer systems, software, and their uses; providing community service to charities and educational groups; awarding an annual NJCC Memorial Award; and sharing knowledge and social activities with other computer enthusiasts. A frequent topic of discussion, and a major need of all of our membership, is how to upgrade, troubleshoot, and repair their computer systems. This book is an excellent and indispensable companion guide and reference to Upgrading and Repairing PCs, 16th Edition, on everything associated with computer system operations and problems.
Upgrading and Repairing Microsoft Windows, authored by Scott Mueller and Brian Knittel, and published by Que Publishing, is an up-to-date comprehensive (705 page) book that comes with a two hour instructional and reference DVD. Detailed technical information is very well presented in an easy to read format with extensive diagrams, figures, and tables that both illustrate concepts and organize historical and statistical data for clarity of understanding and ease of use.
There are two main ways of using this book. First, you can utilize it as a learning tool to gain knowledge about an area of interest, such as installing or upgrading a Windows operating system. Second, you can utilize it as a technical reference, to find detailed information on a specific Windows topic or operation. Of major importance is the fact that the text covers not only current data and information, but also historical content on older Microsoft operating systems that may still be in use.
The chapters on "Managing Windows", "Protecting and Securing Windows", "Windows Troubleshooting" and the "Windows Tool and Command References" (Appendix) are of special interest, as diagnostic and troubleshooting operating system problems are significant concerns for our membership. The chapters on "Installing and Upgrading Windows" are also very important for those who need assistance in the installation and/or upgrading of their Windows operating system.
The DVD is especially useful with video presentations by Scott Mueller on "XP Installation", "System Backup", "Windows Optimization", "Eliminate Spyware" (Malware), and "Windows Versions" (History). These segments will be valuable to both novice and experienced users.
I have personally used Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs for many years, and I have always found the content to be very accurate, informative and useful. This companion Upgrading and Repairing Microsoft Windows book has the same characteristics. I have not read either book in its entireity, but I know what is available in each book and where to find it, and when you need the information it is very satisfying to know that you have it readily accessible.
I consider this book as essential for our User Group personnel who provide technical assistance and support for our membership, and I very strongly recommended it to all our NJCC members and other computer users as a learning and self help tool for their own benefit. In my opinion it is by far the best book I have found available on this topic.
Not bad for a first edition, but not quite there.......2005-12-22
I should first state that I am a BIG fan of Scott Mueller and his book series "Upgrading and Repairing PCs". Mueller is THE authority when it comes to PC hardware and I've been his fan since 1995. Thus, I decided to order his first book on the Windows operating system.
Now here's the review of U&R Windows:
Pros:
Mueller goes into the history of DOS and Windows in very intricate detail in the first chapter and it's very interesting. He then proceeds to cover Windows operating system upgrades and installation scenarios. A detailed explanation of the product activation is explained and is most intriguing. Mueller also goes over the different versions of Windows (OEM, Retail and Volume) with differences in each.
Then he goes in the various processes used in Windows startup routines in his famous "last to the minute detail" explanation of registry entries, and system processes. A healthy and detailed list of Windows services, what they are and how they work are given in chapter 4 and reading this chapter was quite enjoyable.
The rest of the book follows with networking, tweaking, troubleshooting, file systems, data recovery, securing the operating system and scripting. I was quite pleased to see a section detailing on how you can reset a Windows administrator password.
Cons:
Chapter 8 of the book, Protecting and Securing Windows, needs a serious re-write and is the most disappointing part of the book. Although 3 competing software firewall are discussed (Norton Personal Firewall, Tiny Personal Firewall and Sygate Personal Firewall), only 2 anti-virus programs (Norton Antivirus 2005 and AVG Free Edition) are discussed. Where is NOD32, Kaspersky or Mcafee?
The spyware removal section is the standard "lock, stock and barrel" answer of using Ad-Aware and Spybot to clean off spyware, with a suggestion to use HighJackThis at the very end. For an advanced Windows repair book like this, I was really expecting more from Mueller.
Completely missing from the book is mention of any of the freeware Sysinternals utilities (Filemon, Regmon, Autoruns, etc) that are so vital to troubleshooting Windows (and FREE!). A discussion of Windows PE or BartPE would make this book golden. Device detection information using system information utilites such as Everest, PCI32 or Belarc Advisor would also be an asset to this book.
Also, a scripting chapter (presumeably made by Brian Knittel, co-author of the book) goes in "deep and heavy" into scripting and seems out of place in a book like this.
Summary:
Overall, I like this book. It appears, however, that Mueller's authority is mostly in the hardware arena and not in the software one.
Book Description
Written by best-selling author and instructor Jean Andrews, this edition maps fully to CompTIA's new 2006 A+ Exam objectives. This full-color guide is designed to be the most complete, step-by-step book available for learning the fundamentals of supporting and troubleshooting computer hardware and software. Video clips are available on the accompanying CD so readers can watch the author bring concepts and technical topics to life via live demonstrations.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, but needs improvement.......2007-04-05
I, like so many others, was required to have this book for two of my classes. While it is a very informative, useful book, it is not very well-organized and is very boring. The videos on the CD that comes with it is very helpful to understand a lot of the hands-on stuff. Many of the "Reviewing the Basics" questions at the end of the chapter cover a lot of pointless things that are not necessary to know, and there are always anywhere from 1 - 5 questions that I just absolutely cannot find the answers to. There have also been many things that a few of my PC tech teachers have found in the book that they would like to debate with the author about. Overall, it's still a good book, but you need a LOT of time and a LOT of patience, and you can't be the type that gets bored too easily with reading, to be able to successfully read this book. The only exception to these rules is if you are required by your teacher to have this book for class. :P
The book can explain you the fundamental of PC........2001-07-16
The book has 19 chapters and 7 appendixes. Chapters cover introduction to computer software, hardware, multimedia technology, viruses and as well as networking. In the appendixes you will find about ASCII Character Set, ANSI.SYS, The Hexadecimal number system and etc. Briefly this book is really handy one and written about mostly hardware components. When you read you will see it by yourself how handy it is. So i would say if you need basic computer reference then buy the book. Good Luck.
Andrews comes through with flying colors!.......2001-01-02
COMPTIA has started to update the A+ Exam and the new exam will be out in the first quarter of 2001. Having a book that gives you the newest objectives is certainly a plus and Jean Andrews has delivered the first book I have seen to cover the newest set of objectives.
The 1200 page book can be used as a self-study manual or in a classroom setting. Starting off with computer concepts and how software and hardware works gives the technician a great base to build on.
Andrews then covers the topics of system boards, memory, storage devices and troubleshooting the hardware side. This covers about 40% of the book. Andrews makes sure that the laser printer process and laptops get the needed coverage devoting chapters to each topic.
The networking sections are excellent and each area is covered with enough information to make sure that you can pass the exam. The software topics of Windows 9.X, NT and 2000 Professional are also given their due with excellent attention to detail.
With tables, figures, diagrams, review question, key terms, hands-on projects you have every objective covered and the best chance of getting a leg up on the rest of the IT community. The cd-rom included has a 120-day eval of Nuts and Bolts and a discount voucher is also included.
Again, Jean Andrews is leading the pack in making sure that future technicians are given every opportunity to climb the IT ladder. About the only thing left out is the software practice test, but overall this is an excellent place to start.
I was forced to by this book due to class requirements..........2000-10-13
This book is full of redundant sentences. If it wasn't for all the poor writing and organization, it would be about 15 pages long. I have considered burning this book on the writers front door step! Or just boinking her on the head with it. Please buy any other book except this one. I suggest A+ Cert guide by Michael Myers, It rocks.
Ms.MaddP
Good info, poor organization........2000-07-19
I have used "A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC : Comprehensive" to study for A+ certification, to teach from as a textbook, and to develop a course using it as the text. It has strengths and weaknesses.
The main strength is the ease for which information is accessed.
By showing the A+ Exam objectives in the front matter and referencing each objective to specific pages as well as referencing the text in the margins, it makes it simple to study each objective individually.
The weaknesses become apparent when you try to use it as a study text for the A+ Certification Exam.
Though the exam objectives are referenced and noted on each page, the information is widely dispersed throughout the book. It becomes difficult trying to study while paging through the book to find related information. The A+ Certification Exam is divided into a "Core" exam and a "DOS/Windows" exam. "A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC : Comprehensive" does not use this division.
To study for A+ you need to study from several sources. I would recommend "A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC : Comprehensive" as an adjunct source but not as a main source of study material.
Average customer rating:
- PC repair for everyone, even computer illiterates like me
- Better than Certified Technical Support !
- complete but take time to find what you want
- Disappointed
- An excellent resource for classroom or job

Covering everything from general troubleshooting strategies to specific problem-solving procedures, Troubleshooting, Maintaining & Repairing PCs is an excellent resource for people who want to understand how personal computers work and how to fix them when they fail.
Bigelow explains, in great detail, how each subsystem of an IBM-compatible PC works. In the BIOS section, for example, he details the actions, in sequence, taken by various popular BIOS routines at boot up. The CD-ROM section describes exactly how to make a bootable CD-ROM that takes advantage of the El Torito standard. In other chapters, he takes on video monitors, processors from all three major vendors, DVD drives, diagnostic beep and power-on self test (POST) codes, modems, and tons more. Throughout, he combines excellent "how it works" text with bountiful reference material. Bigelow also has paid considerable attention to troubleshooting, concluding each chapter with statements of common problems and their solutions.
A "Symptoms at a Glance" section lists common problems, along with references to the pages that describe what to do about them. This is a useful feature, but it would be easier to find a particular problem if the list were broken up by subsystem. A companion CD-ROM includes lots of shareware and freeware programs that assist with benchmarking and problem solving. --David Wall

PC repair for everyone, even computer illiterates like me.......2002-09-27
I'm not a computer technician. Heck, I can barely operate a computer! I "grew up" (computer-wise) with Macs, which never seem to need fixing and seldom wear out, but because my husband had a typical PC person's prejudice against Macs, I started using PCs. Toshibas, IBMs, Dells -- each and every one sooner or later had problems. Tired of talking to technicians from Wales to Holland, I decided to take an online course in computer repair and this book was required reading.
Voila! Help at last.
Information is thorough and easy to find. Fixes work.
If you HAVE to have a PC and you run into problems, this is the book to have.
Better than Certified Technical Support !.......2002-08-18
I bought a HP Pavillion 8785C and within the year had so many problems that the PC was racking up more mileage than me!
It was 'fixed??' twice by HP. Motherboard changed, Modem changed, RAM changed.. You name it, they changed it and still couldn't solve the problem!
I was ready to dump the PC after spending [money] in phone calls to HP Help! They even re-routed my call to India! And kept advising me to re-format my hard drive.
Then I bought this book and the solution was on page 698! Symptom 19-3.
Within an hour after checking the heat sink and changing the fan, I was back in business.
I could have saved so much money if I had bought this book earlier. Fedup with Tech Support? Get this book!
Maybe HP should invest in a couple of hundred copies for their staff.
complete but take time to find what you want.......2002-01-26
very complet book but it's hard to find easely what you need. The failures' list are complete but not very well indexed.
Disappointed.......2002-01-11
I was disappointed to find out that the 5th edition does not include an electronic version of the text on the CDROM. I was hoping to be able to carry around just the CDROM along with my laptop because it just is not practical to lug around a book that's about the size of a big city phone book and weighs maybe 10 pounds.
An excellent resource for classroom or job.......2001-12-22
The chief problem with the book is the difficulty of finding a problem among the hundreds of troubleshooting symptoms that Mr. Bigelow has included throughout the text. The symptoms at a glance, pp. xxxvii - LXXVIII is weak in that it is very difficult to use it to drill down to the actual problem.
For instance, I was encountering a fatal exception error during a Windows 98 installation. There are fatal exception errors all over the "Symptoms at a Glance" but good luck finding them all! I suggest listing all the fatal exception errors together. Likewise for other problems such as keyboard, DVD or numerous components. Group them logically together!
Having said that, I love the book! With some effort, a technician can find almost any problem and solve it. Hope the next edition includes my suggestions and also Windows 2000 and Windows XP. I purchased the 5th edition in August 2001 for my class and was dissapointed that Windows 2000 or NT wasn't included in chapter 40.
Book Description
This popular Build-It-Yourself (BIY) PC book covers everything you want to know about building your own system: Planning and picking out the right components, step-by-step instructions for assembling your perfect PC, and an insightful discussion of why you'd want to do it in the first place. Most big brand computers from HP, Dell and others use lower-quality components so they can meet their aggressive pricing targets. But component manufacturers also make high-quality parts that you can either purchase directly, or obtain through distributors and resellers. Consumers and corporations alike are opting to build rather than buy PCs to ensure high quality and compatibility.
The new edition of Building the Perfect PC shows you how to construct a variety of top-flight systems with the latest technology, including AMD Socket AM-2 and Intel Core 2 processors, that are Vista- and Linux-ready. The book includes several new options, including:
- A Budget PC you can build for approximately $350 that offers performance and reliability similar to that of mainstream systems
- A full-blown media-center system that runs Linux and MythTV or Windows MCE with multiple tuners and HDTV support
- A fire-breathing high-performance gaming system
- A fast, low-power, low-heat, low-noise, Small Form Factor system (the size of a shoe box)
- A low-cost SOHO (small office, home office) server system with a 2 terabyte (2,000 GB) disk subsystem that's suitable for a residential environment rather than a server closet
Regardless of your technical experience,
Building the Perfect PC will guide you through the entire process of building or upgrading your own computer. You'll use the latest top-quality components, including Intel's Core 2 Duo and AMD's Athlon X2 CPUs. And you'll know exactly what's under the hood and how to fix or upgrade your PC, should that become necessary. Not only is the process fun, but the result is often less expensive and always better quality and far more satisfying than anything you could buy off the shelf.

Great for begginers.......2007-10-10
Greg's review: I think this is a great book for beginners. It would have bean a lot harder to build our first computer without it but if we had already built some computers it would have bean a lot less helpful. It gives you a good amount of information like the price ranges that our best to buy in, what things you should look for in components you are thinking about buying, what different components do, and how to put them all together. It doesn't tell you exactly what to buy and hoe to put it together either it assumes that you will modify there examples to fit your needs better and tell you how. The only bad things about it are that it doesn't tell you how to install an operating system, and some of what it says is a bit old. Unfortunately it would be impossible to make a book that tells you how to make computers which isn't a bit old because computers are getting better so fast.
Dad's review: I think this is a great book for beginners. I would never have had the confidence to go out and buy the parts and build a PC without this kind of help, but I'm happy to say my 10 year old son and I read the book and successfully built a pretty decent computer.
A good thing about this book is that it gives you an explicit list of parts to buy, tailored to the kind of PC you want (budget, mainstream, gaming, media centre etc.). A better thing about this book is that while giving you this list, it talks about the features of motherboards, disk drives, chips, etc. that are important to look for. This means that even though we couldn't find the exact parts they listed (inevitably, because computer hardware evolves so quickly), we knew enough about what we were looking for that we could find closely similar parts and make good choices of alternatives.
One thing I think this book could add is a brief discussion of installing an operating system, since without an OS, even if you have done everything else correctly, you still just have a fancy paperweight not a working computer. We installed Ubuntu linux. It was free, easy to download, installed and ran perfectly with no special knowledge on our part in under half an hour.
For the previous poster who complained the book was out of date, I think he had the first edition (2004) not the second (2006).
Good but............2007-07-31
Positives: informative, detailed
Negatives: outdated, nothing about gaming computers
I bought this book along with another build your own PC book. It's a little outdated and nothing about sound cards and/or video cards for gamers. Yes it was only published (available to the public) in 2004 which was only 3 years ago however, in computers especially when building your own, that was ions ago. The book gives you the basics as well as some advanced material in order for you to do it yourself. It's a good book however if your into gaming machines its not listed in it. This is a good start book to give you some basics of he inside of the computer and some terminology.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2007-07-12
Do you want to build a PC for personal or business use? If you do, then this book is for you. Authors Barbara Fritchman Thompson and Robert Bruce Thompson, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that is your guide to the world of building PCs.
Thompson and Thompson, begin by focusing on things you need to know, things you need to have, and things you need to do before you start to buy components and build your new PC. Then, the authors tell you everything you need to know about how to choose and buy the components you need to build your new PC. Next, they show you how to build a general-purpose PC that is a jack of all trades and a master of... well, quite a few, actually. The authors also focus on building a reliable, high performance SOHO server, appropriate for anything from an inexpensive server for a home office to a serious server for a small-business network. They continue by showing you how to build a gaming PC on a reasonable budget. Then, the authors show you how to build a PC that provides TiVo-like DVR functions, without the monthly subscription or the DRM features common to commercial PVR units. Next, they show you how to build a full-featured PC that is small enough and quiet enough to fit in almost anywhere. Finally, the authors show you how to build a fast, reliable PC on a minimum budget.
The goal of this most excellent book is to show you how to select the best components and assemble them into a working PC that matches your own requirements and budget. Perhaps more importantly, this book provides the advice and ideas that you need to make the net PC you build the perfect PC for your needs.
Well worth the price for the advice.......2007-07-07
I just noticed that the current edition is a revision of the one I bought from Amazon! Having said that, I'd be surprised if the quality and wisdom changed materially, and here is what I mean.
Using Thompson's book, I've built with both of my children the Home Theater PC and the Gaming PC. Both work like a champ. I'd add that much like the way the Thompson's structure each chapter, determine what you need, making a list, constructing the CPU, and what the outcome was: was our experience as well. Sometimes, the available parts just aren't. Sometimes there are driver issues and conflicts that you don't expect and it's not as though the Thompson's can know everything before the book was printed.
Some one whined a bit about the website in another review. I'd counter that with the affirmation of those who are in forum answer questions that are placed on the bottom shelf for novice builders like my family, as well as answer some truly arcane questions for advanced builders and hardware developers! That the website has "dated material" regarding hardware might be a no-brainer, but asking questions in the forum will quickly provide anyone with updates regarding anything related to hardware, drivers, and known conflicts between components.
In the build of the HT PC, we started out with an ASUS board that was (I think) recommended. But, the Plextor DVD wasn't recognized in the install. My daughter and I searched far and wide for a solution. One of the many responses to our post in the forum came in an answer from Robert Thompson, who provided the options for us regarding solutions.
The book possesses the same kind wisdom and availability to any builder from Thompson. He passes along some advice about what you can get away with in a build regarding tools-I won't disclose that secret- and just some "watch-out's" that will keep your build from becoming accidentally expensive, e.g., trying to insert the processor with the wrong orientation or incorrect application of the heat transfer paste to the processor. I'm likely to buy this new edition for the next build.
Great build instructions, lacks the final touch.......2007-07-01
This is a great book. It got me excited as hell about building my own system. Since this was the first time I built a PC, I decided to pretty much follow very closely the bill of material listed as one of the options, but there were still some subtle differences that I had to sweat over. Many of the pictures of the motherboard, for example, were actually from a different engineering revision of the board that I bought, so the exact locations of connectors will be different from any board manufactured after mid 2007.
A note to one of the authors referred me to join a discussion website, which was a little disappointing since I believe the answer should have been known.
This book is very up to date, very insightful, it has tips and tricks that only can be learned after many years of experience, and is very well written.
I would recommend that a first time builder also buy Rosenthal's "Build Your Own PC". This book is a little more ancient, but it has interesting history about PC components, and it shows another point of view on the same subject. It also includes more info on the CMOS setup and installing the OS, which is just as important as the physical build if you want your computer for more than just a decoration.

Excellent Reference.......2006-05-26
This is a great book if you are like me and want to know where to find out all that esoteric information about computer junk. What do all those acronyms mean? I was able to go from being scared to open a computer case to building now three different computers. I love that it has all the old information in there. It is sort of a history of computers from the early PCs to today. This book is just now starting to be obsolete. Some of the newer chipsets are not listed, but it is still a great resource.
Not for advanced users!.......2006-03-09
Pretty good book in general. I'm an intermediate computer user and I have to say I didn't learn to terribly much from this very large extensive product. For advanced users I wouldn't recommend it, for beginners looking for info on basic troubleshooting and building of pc's I would recommend it. A large wealth of the history of computers, and other now obsolete information that I'd rather not waste my time or brain capacity with. Also EXTREMELY BIAST on Intel products, basically giving less info on AMD chipsets mobo's and processors, and treating AMD like it's not worth the space in this 1500 page book. Let's face it, if your building your own PC, your probably gonna shoot for an AMD processor, for it's specs and it's value of the buck.
A Bible for PCs.......2005-11-15
This is an excellent book writing by a real authority on this matter. A 'Must Have" for eveyone involved in Hardware.
Everything and then some!.......2005-09-09
This book has everything you can imagine, and then everything you can't. It's got what you need and what you don't. The more information the better! Superb reference book and great to learn the details you always heard about but never really understood from either the concept, technical, or logical side. A must have for computer gurus!
My favorite author!.......2005-09-05
One of the most respected authorities in the PC industry! I bought the 6th edition of his book back in 1995 at Best Buy and I've been buying updated editions ever since. Scott goes into such amazing detail, but yet he doesn't "talk over your head". The guy is so geeky that he programmed the ROM chips in his car to get better compression! Lots of cool little stories like that are in this book.
My only complaint would be that he puts the PDF of the book one edition behind the current one on the CD. So if you buy the 16th edition you will find the 15th edition in PDF format on the CD. Also, the PDF cannot be copied or printed from because it uses Adobe's copy protection features (enabled by QUE).
I recommend this book to all my students and co-workers.

Explaining the fundamentals of personal computing to those who would rather read words than look at pictures, PCs for Dummies tells you everything you need to know in order to use an IBM-compatible PC running Windows 98. Dan Gookin's prose is technically astute and fun to read.
This isn't the book for you if you're looking through a computer catalog and wondering what all the jargon means (Buying a Computer for Dummies covers that). Rather, this book will help you when you've gotten the machine into your home and you need to know what to do next. Starting with the process of unpacking the box and plugging in all the cables, this book shows you what to do with your new machine.
After assembly is out of the way, Gookin shows you how to get around in Windows 98 (and Windows 95, which is almost identical). He explains concepts like files, directories, and applications, and frequently explains the exact procedures involved in common tasks like adjusting screen resolution. Once you've heard all about the basics, Gookin goes on to explain modem configuration, printer problems, productivity software, and a fair amount about Internet use. --David Wall

I LIKED THIS BOOK.......2007-03-11
VERY HELPFUL FOR THE NOVICE COMPUTER NUT. IT'S READABLE FROM PAGE 1 TO THE END, BUT ALSO, EASY TO LOOK UP STUFF USING CHAPTER HEADINGS OR THE INDEX. LIKE ALL 'DUMMIES' BOOKS, HUMOR IS THERE FOR THE ASKING. I RECOMMEND IT.
Outstanding books for beginners!!!!.......2001-08-28
I was a "dummy" when it came to pc basics. I wanted to know Ram, rom, whats on the motherboard, etc. I wanted to know my Dell 4100 inside and out. Thanks to Mr. Gookin's excellent book, I am on my way to becoming very good friends with the very computer that once intimidated the heck out of me. He talks in, depth (but doesnt go so far as to confuse the beginner with a lot of geek jargon), and with humor, all you need to know about your computer so you can feel confident about using it. Youre not going to be a techinician when youre done with this book, but after reading it, you will be able to go to the local computer store with confidence and talk their language and not get the runaround. If every computer were to come with an instruction book, this one should be it!! Hats off to Dan Gookin and IDG books for such an excellent book. I look forward to reading Upgrading and Fixing Pc's For Dummies next!
Very Good.......2001-06-25
This is a very handy book to have. It is best for people who have very little experience with computers.
Who's the Dummy.......2001-04-09
I have been working with computers for a number of years and I am still mystified by all the computer hardware, software, jargon, acronyms, properties, claims, capabilities etc. Most of what I have learned has been through experimentation, reading Dilbert, and pleading for advice. Dan Gookin's book PCs for Dummies has been a great help in demystifying the world of PCs. After breaking down and purchasing this book, I realized just who the "dummy" was.
The format of Gookin's book is unique. It is well written, humorous, and very informative. Best of all, PCs for Dummies actually makes reading about computers "nerdless." The book is broken down into 34 chapters and covers everything from turning the computer on (power-up) to the Internet. Each chapter covers a specific piece of hardware, software, and/or computer function. Individual chapters are further subdivided into sections. For example, Chapter Eight is titled, "Just Your Basic Computer Guts." Subsections include, The Mother of All Boards, The Microprocessor, Connectors for Things Various and Sundry, Expansion Slots, Tick Tock Goes the Clock, and The Bios. I would love to tell you how it ends, but I am forbidden to do so by Amazon.com guidelines.
The best attributes of PCs for Dummies are that the book can not only be used as a reference source, but can also be used in place of a phone book to interrogate surly computer gurus. You don't have to read the entire book before using your newfound knowledge. Just turn to that particular section for which you need help, read, and press "Enter."
PCs for Dummies teachs how to use computers based on the learning philosophy of "Constructivism." Whoa! Basically, Constructivism is a philosophy in which learners acquire knowledge through active participation in their own learning; and by connecting the new knowledge to knowledge that they already possess. In other words, once you have learned basic computer tasks, you can "construct" or build upon that knowledge to learn more advanced computer operations. I subscribe to this learning philosophy and employ it into my teaching with excellent results.
All good things must pass and so must this review, but not before some constructive criticism. I would have liked Mr. Gookin in PCs for Dummies go into a little more detail about specific topics, as many topics are just touched upon. Well maybe not many, just the ones in which I needed help. Overall, Mr. Gookin has written an excellent book and I highly recommend it to all.
Bestseller of Bestsellers.......2000-05-12
There are plenty of weighty tomes available to tell you more than you want or need to know about PC. But this book of Dan Gookin is very special. It is just great for novice.
Truly say I'm not a novice in PC. I've been writing about computers for over 10 years now. But I really enjoyed this book. And I read every 'PC for Dummies' editions since it was translated into Russian for the very first time in 1995. And this 1999 edition also was recently translated into Russian and take a good position in a list of bestsellers.
By the way, I wrote a review on this edition for the Home Computer Magazine published in Moscow. And I want to repeate -- this is a great book for beginners.

MacBook for Dummies.......2007-08-17
I think the book is a good summary of the technical aspects of use of the MacBook. It would have been more helpful to me if more specific discussions of the Intel duo core aspects of the MacBook Pro had been included. Apparently the work had been written before the MacBook Pro version was issued. On the whole I am satisfied with the book and its mode of presentation, in any case.
Jfelix.......2007-05-20
Great book, It would be nice to have bought a more up to date version, barley covers anyhing on I chat, other than that it really helps out if your a beginner. Not as huge as most help you mac books out there. Easy refrence guide to get you the info you need.
good for laptops.......2007-05-12
i thought this was for a desktop but it's for a laptop.the information is still useful and it makes a great reference book.
MacBook for Dummies.......2007-03-13
It has a lot of wonderful tips that make using the MacBook very easy. I use it for reference if there is something I want to do, but cannot figure out how to do it, I find the right chapter and I am off and running.
MacBook For Dummies.......2007-02-06
I got into computers a little late in life at age fifty-seven, and had only been exposed to a PC. Seven years later I was given a MacBook and was totaly lost. This book came to the rescue.I'm still no expert, but I'm in no hurry. I'm happy with this book and, now with my MacBook. Bye Bye PC. I would have given the book five stars, but I have only gotten about fifty pages into it.

Superb PC Reference.......2005-11-12
I am an EET studying for certifications. Also I use this book for a general troubleshooting reference. This is one of the best out there. I have several others and most just ramble about the technologies as an overview but do not get into applications needed. Meyers conveys the information as he is addressing people who are working in the real world. Good diagrams and the book is very well put together. Hey it is McGraw Hill. A top notch Publisher. A+
Great Book, Great Bargain.......2005-08-19
While I would not count on the book to teach me everything I must know to pass the A+ exams, I would definitely trust it to give me a strong foundation. Meyers includes all the basics and then some, and he goes into detail in a manner that should cater to almost all experience levels. The thing I liked the best about this book was how easy it was to read from beginning to end. Highly recommended to those who are looking for a place to start.
Very Readable with Lots of Detail.......2005-07-07
The text is well presented with about 40% white space on each page. The important items in each topic are highlighted and reviewed at the end of the chapter. My only suggestion for improvement would be to provide an answer key. Each question and key word has the page the topic was covered and hopefully the answer is there staring you in the face.
The author's tone is that of a "regular" person talking to a "regular" person. The CD that came with book is excellent, but simply not enough questions to feel comfortable passing the A+ exam on the first try.
Several schools in the local area use this exact text for instructor lead classes. I'd buy this text (expensive !! like a college text) but well worth it. Not too much detail for a tech, but more than a newbie would know going in.
A #1 effort from the #1 authority on the subject!.......2003-12-10
We all know that Mike Meyers is go to man for A+ and that is All-In-One Guide is a huge success and that a great number of people, including myself, owe him a huge bit of thanks for helping us to pass the exams. Now imagine taking the best parts of his guides and break it down even further and that is exactly what has been done here in this book.
The book is an excellent study tool for passing the A+ exams as both the Core and OS exam are covered in the 950 plus pages. One thing that could be added in future updates is a few more exercises. And once again as with other books from Mike, this one has material I have not seen anywhere else before. I also found that this book is current with the newest exams, which is another plus.
The thing that has always impressed me is the way that Mike Meyers can explain any topic. He is able to convey the concepts and ideas without boring the reader; in fact several students in my current A+ Class have found this manual to clear up some confusion from the study guides we are currently using.
The cd included has several practice exams and some videos you can use as additional study tools. The Learn Key Videos does a hardware check before allowing you to run the video demos, which is a good thing since 1 of my machines was not hardware ready. As with the written material, Mike is even better in the video segments with his use of real life situations and examples.
If you are just getting started and need a first step in the right direction, than let this book be the pace is all begins. Overall just another superb effort from Mike Meyers.
