Thank you, thank you, thank you, to Richard Lyons for "Understanding
Digital Signal Processing", both editions. I had the great pleasure to
use and learn from the 1st edition about 5 years ago. At that time, I
had the overwhelming urge to convey my appreciation for the wonderful
work. Now that the 2nd edition is out, there is even more reason to
express how much I enjoyed and still enjoy those works.

In particular, the topics are spot on (eg, I needed to learn about CIC
Decimation filters), but most importantly, the exposition is so very
clear and so easy to understand: each step in the progression is made
obvious -- no "and then the magic happens" or "left as an exercise to
the reader" for the important stuff.

The result is an EXCELLENT EXPOSITION. The care and the craft of
carefully showing the intermediate steps makes it real and concrete.
And it is done with a beautiful balance of intuition, observation,
analysis, and math. Why sling equations around when a simple graph
makes things clear? The equations are there, but the pictures are the
teaching tools. Other books discuss the topics. Richard Lyons's books
illuminate the topics.

I'm pleased to be able to purchase these books, and happy that Richard
is being rewarded (getting royalties, for he is DSP royalty) for his
achievements.

5 out of 5 stars excellent introduction but somewhat elementary........2007-04-10

I purchased this book because I found myself needing to do some digital signal processing and the FFT gives me anxiety. This book was an excellent and clear introduction to the basics and helped me to develop a much better understanding of the analysis. It's written in a clear style and assumes only very basic knowledge, in fact, I think you could understand much of it without even knowing calculus. I found the author's geometric exposition of aliasing to be particularly helpful.

I give the book 5 stars, but the potential reader should be aware that the book is serves as an introduction only. In the course of my analysis I discovered that some other "tricks" were necessary that could only be found in a more advanced DSP book. So, it might be helpful to have a more comprehensive reference at your side when it comes time to actually process your signals.

Modern, gentle, readable, practical, serious, complete. So many other DSP books drown in their own mathematics, or gloss over subjects confusing to the author. The introduction to Hilbert transforms is worth the price of the entire book. Required reading for professional DSP programmers.

This is a fabulous introduction to DSP, by far the best I have ever read. It explains concepts without throwing equations and math at the reader. The tips and tricks section is also great and I have already found some useful ones. While not providing the depth of a reference book I will always have it on my shelf for when I truly need to understand a topic.

As I was told by my instructor about this book, and it is true, this is a very good book about DSP. I actually bought a lot of DSP books before, but this one is the best, I strongly recommend it.

Taking cue from The One Minute Manager, Zapp!, Fish! and Who Moved My Cheese?, The Hamster Revolution uses a parable to show how to better manage and organize e-mail and information. The hamster represents people endlessly running on the wheel of e-mail. Right away, I start using concepts from the 90-minute book. Considering I'm an organized person, that says something.

In the story, Harold the Hamster receives a visit from an information coach to help him with e-mail and information management. Harold is a person who turned into a hamster because e-mail and information trapped him on a figurative hamster wheel.

Harold and his coach think aloud as they explore his e-mail habits and inbox to find the problem areas. The banter between the two gives the reader insight into why something doesn't work and how to fix it. Their comments mirror what many of us think when we're drowning in messages. Though cheesy at times, the story quickly explains the how, what, and why without confusing readers with dry writing.

I was eager to discover the secret of COTA, the concept for creating folders named Clients, Output, Teams and Administration. COTA also represents the order of priority. The Clients folder receives top honors on the hierarchy than Output. Administration gets thrown to the bottom of the pile where it belongs. But this concept isn't as foolproof as the authors make it sound.

They state that you won't run into a situation when an email or document belongs in two folders. However, if that should happen -- then the document belongs in the one higher up on the COTA ladder. Furthermore, the system serves departments and teams best.

COTA won't work well for personal use (the authors apparently have another system for this, but information isn't available yet) or a small business like mine where I'm a freelancer working on a computer that houses both business and personal information.

Furthermore, not everyone will know what some things mean such as EOM (end of message) or NRN (no reply needed). These require teaching others and a team setting would adapt to that better than a lone person who must explain it in many individuals. EOM and NRN should become as standard as smilies, but they're far from there.

Some advice might sound common sense or old news to some people, but the authors share lesser known or new concepts. The book has had positive impact on my e-mail habits, and for what it is worth, that opinion comes from a long-time e-mail user (the days of BBSes -- pre-Internet).

Purchased the audio tape for the car. Easy listening and great tips on productivity for managing email overload. Makes you think before you send an email, sculpt it, use categories for easier identification/prioritization and shows new system for filing and finding anything anytime. It worked for me and can warmly recommend to everybody! Join the Hamster Revolution!

If you have any system of organizing your email already in place, don't bother reading this book.

First of all, this book is written in a "For Complete Morons" "Who Moved My Cheese?" style which I found to be a complete turn-off.

The first half of the book tells you what's wrong with your email style, which is news only to those that don't know how to conduct business communication in the first place. "Is the content of your email appropriate and professional?" I should hope so. Then it goes on to say you should convert your coworkers to the wonderful time-saving methodologies you've learned in this book, and direct them to the book web site. Any student of human nature can tell you, you can't really force anyone to do anything they don't want to do, you can only set an example and hope that they want to emulate it. If you are the boss, I suppose you can order people to follow the guidelines in this book, but otherwise it suggests giving your peers critiques of what's wrong with the email they've been sending you, a technique that's sure to make you near and dear to their hearts.

The second half of the book, which I eagerly anticipated, makes suggestions, then breaks its own rules, resulting in a confusing set of directions that aren't ultimately very useful. For example, the book states that you should be able to sort any email you receive into one folder, without wasting time deliberating over the decision between folders. You are supposed to organize your emails into Clients, Output, Teams, and Admin folders. If something falls into two folders, for example, some Output for a Client, it goes into the first folder in the COTA order-- the Client folder. But when would you ever create output that doesn't have a Client? And Clients in this case includes external AND internal customers. If your organization has a lot of output that isn't created FOR anybody, you have bigger problems than email.

Some of the other suggestions are obvious but presented as epiphany, such as, use subfolders within the COTA folders. Has it ever occurred to you that you could use email subfolders? Does your organization already use instant messaging for asynchronous messages? Guess what, you don't need this book.

In a FAQ at the end of the book, there is a tip that was not new to me, but which has worked for me. Turn off your email notifications (popups, sounds, etc.) and check your email about twice a day for a dedicated block of time. Otherwise every time you receive an email, you are interrupted from your flow of work.

What will happen with email? It is indeed a growing problem, I can't argue with that. I hope that Outlook develops better search technology, like that embedded in GMail. If you are one of the many Outlook users, you know that when your folders reach a certain size, an advanced search can take 15 minutes or more. However, creating a new folder structure isn't likely to do much for you, except cost you the time it takes to reorganize all of your mail.

Getting overloaded with emails over the last 3-4 years. So decided to buy some books on the subject to improve. Bought 3 books from Amazon - Emails, Conquer Your Email Overload and Hamster Revolution. Find Hamster Revolution the best. I can see Hamster in me with over 500 emails in my in-box and having problems in relocating some of the infor later. This book is NOT about how to use Outlook. What I like is the story-telling method the authors used to bring across, otherwise a dry and technical subject, with interesting, lively and useful ideas. Strategy 1 is an eye opener for me. So simple and yet so useful ! Find it so enlightening and useful that I am thinking of asking the company to engage them for an in-house workshop ! Well done, guys !

This is an introductory text on making sensors "intelligent". It meets that need well.

This book is not a text on DSP. If you need a text book on DSP, get a DSP text book.

This is not a text on PIC microcontrollers. There are several from introductory to advanced in print.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for the dsPIC Enthusiast Interested in Intelligent Sensor Design.......2007-01-13

This is an Excellent Book for the dsPIC Enthusiast Interested in Intelligent Sensor Design. The book really does deserve 5 stars. The reason I rated the book 4 stars is that there are a few errors that, once corrected will go a long way to a 5 star rating.

I sometimes get frustrated with an author that makes errors. This book is not riddled with errors like some I've read. In this case, the errors are forgivable as it is obvious that they were made in the effort to get this book to print. The first error has to do with the Nyquist theorem. The author states, "As one can easily see, a problem arises when the highest frequency component in the original signal is greater than twice the sampling frequency, a sample rate known as the Nyquist rate." Opps; the maximum frequency in an analog signal, f1, is often referred to as the `Nyqust frequency'. The minimum sampling rate (2 *f1 samples per second) at which a signal can be recovered is known as the `Nyquist rate'. The `folding frequency', which is one-half the sampling frequency used, is the highest frequency which can be recovered according to the Sampling Theorem (See Lynn and Fuerst, "Introductory to Digital Signal Processing, 2nd ed., p11). Hence, I believe the author meant to say, "As one can easily see, a problem arises when the highest frequency component in the original signal is greater than one-half the sampling frequency, a sample rate known as the Nyquist rate." The other factual error I found was stating that the dsPICDEM Demo board has a temperature sensor with SPI. The board I believe the author is referring to (dsPICDEM 1.1) has a TC1047A which is an analog sensor, not SPI. Neither error is worth rating a book lower, I just wanted to point out two errors that may, at first, puzzle a reader.

So, why is the book excellent? After reading the book, I believe it is fair to say Creed Huddleston is an experienced embedded veteran with a disciplined code style. Creed has mastered the dsPIC and can teach you a lot about using the dsPIC in intelligent sensor designs. That is, if you have an open mind, take the time to read and use the code on included CD, you will learn a lot. The code in the book is very well organized. You will need access to 1) Microchip's C30 GNU C compiler (a free student version is available); 2) the dsPIC Digital filter software (a lite version is available at a modest cost), 3) MPLAB (Free download from Microchip); 4) The dsPICDEM 1.1 demo board (unless you have the time to build your own circuit or adapt the code to another); 5) Time to build an interface circuit to the sensor of your choice. Creed takes you though the rational for intelligent sensors in the early part of the book, though a brief introduction to DSP (this is NOT a DSP tutorial book), though a brief introduction the dsPIC architecture, and finally to sensor interface by example of three projects; a temperature sensor, pressure and load sensors, and flow sensors.

In the latter half of the book, you are introduced to a dsPIC `toolkit', created by the author organized in a framework that you can use in your own projects. The beginning dsPIC developer or an intermediate developer would most likely benefit from learning from the code style, rational behind the code organization, and examples the author demonstrates. The framework is state machine driven using a simplistic approach and is not a UML diagram-based. That is, the style is common sense and low-key to allow the reader to understand the intelligent sensor concept, not software design theory.

This is a very large book covering many areas of digital signal processing. I bought a used copy of the third edition to replace an earlier one. Unfortunately, many of the errors - conceptual, not typographical - have remained. For example, the authors state in Sec. 8.3 that the frequency response of an elliptic (Cauer) filter is a rational function of a Jacobian elliptic function of frequency. An electrical engineer would know that a transfer function of a network of discrete components is a rational function of frequency, whereas the Jacobian elliptic is a transcendental function. The typographical error in the name of the mathematician Schur has finally been corrected attesting to the fact that neither author ever read the original paper. The presentation is extremely detailed in trivialities, with as many pictures, including a derivation of the sum of a geometric series as an exercise, a subject usually taught in high school. Finally, as another example, the solution's manual gives the wrong answer for Problem 2.9(a) stating, in effect, that a periodic function possesses a limit as its argument tends to infinity, showing complete ignorance of the notion of limit by the authors. Books such as this have little educational value, confusing the student with tons of irrelevant information, non-standard nomenclature - the Cauchy Residue Theorem in Sec. 3.1.2 is renamed to Cauchy Integral Theorem - and wrong answers. This book, if properly corrected, would be very useful.

It's very very useful book for system identification specially newstarted, because of the fact that system identification is heavily related DFT, FFT, Spectral Analysis, Wiener-Khinchine relations and so on. Congratulations !!!

4 out of 5 stars A great theoretical introduction to DSP.......2005-12-12

This book is a great theoretical introduction to DSP. Although its size looks intimidating and there is a lot of math, this book is very good for a beginner because firstly, the size of the book is due to numerous examples as well as clear and detailed explanations for most of the concepts and secondly, it is possible to skip over much of the math if you are so inclined and take away the gist of the section. This is the case in some of the more advanced topics covered which may be suitable for a second reading.

Some of the things I liked in this book are:
- The organization of the material and lucidity of the writing and explanation
- Consistency of notation
- The concepts of frequency in continuous and discrete time signals in Chapter 1
- The long introduction to discrete time systems and the concepts of linear time invariance in Chapter 2
- The explanation of Fourier series and Fourier transforms of continuous time and discrete time signals (periodic and non periodic) in Chapter 4 is the best part of this book
- Frequency domain characteristics of LTI systems in Chapter 4
- The way the DFT was introduced and its relationship with the DTFT in Chapter 5
- Sampling and reconstruction of signals in Chapter 9

Some of the things I did not like in this book are:
- The way the sampling theorem was derived in Chapter 4. In DSP you can derive the same thing in many ways but in many cases one method is more intuitive and simpler than the rest. There is an easier way to derive the sampling theorem
- There are mistakes in some equations. Not a major issue though
- There is no MATLAB or computer exercises or examples anywhere. This is a pity because you can learn so much and get a lot of insights with a few hours of DSP with MATLAB. Also there are some things like filter design which are done only on a computer
- I did not like the treatment of Multirate DSP in Chapter 10
- There is no treatment of 2D processing anywhere

On the whole this is a great theoretical introduction to DSP with a few minor drawbacks. I would still recommend this book over the ones by Oppenheim and Mitra for a beginner. But I would wait for the fourth edition that comes out in Feb. 2006 before buying any DSP book.

This book was required for a graduate-level DSP course, but I found it quite insufficient for study without a VERY good set of classroom notes. There are mistakes in various equations throughout the text, little to no examples, and I have yet to find a solutions manual.

The one nice thing I can say about the text is that it is thorough in its coverage. The book covers almost every topic I can think of for both undergraduate and graduate-level courses. My course has supplemented the text with "Discrete-Time Signal Processing" by Oppenheim and Schafer as well as "Adaptive Filter Theory" by Haykin. I found Oppenheim's text to be better for the examples -- even buying the Shaum's Outline for DSP can suffice. Haykin's text is for our coverage of adaptive filter theory.

If you're looking for a good undergraduate text try B.P. Lathi's book "Signal Processing and Linear Systems" -- it's much better and has been used at my University for a number of years now to teach our two undergraduate-level DSP courses.

I am a graduate student at USC and this book I actually used in lieu of the assigned book Digital Signal Processing (by Mitra). I referred to this book mainly because the assigned book hardly had any intuitive explanations and was quite convoluted. Proakis did a much better job in terms of the relationships between the various Fourier Transforms without comprising mathematical rigor. I also have Lyons Understanding Digital Signal Processing which is great for people new to DSP but I felt it lacked some depth in certain areas and did not have sample problems. Overall Proakis does a solid job with this book. I'd recommend it after knowing the material in Lyon's book.

Very comprehensive, thorough, and useful for years to come. Great text. Covers important topics beyond the usual digital filters and FFTs, like spectral estimation and in the latest edition adaptive filters, which other basic DSP books omit. If you also are into communication theory, check out Proakis' other books. Similar style.

I just got it the other day, and saw much more changes than was originally reported.

Most of the deletions are in the earlier chapters dealing with basic concepts of DSP (something usually dealt with in a senior undergraduate class on DSP), while the additions are mostly in the later chapters dealing with more advanced concepts - stuff usually dealt with in an advanced/graduate level course.

Topics on LTI systems and their state space representation have been dropped en masse, while Adaptive filtering has been added as a new chapter.

Some of the deletions are (Section #s are from the IIIrd ed.:

2.6.4 - Computation of Autocorrelation Sequences

3.6.7 - Schür-Cohn Stability Test

4.2.12 - Physical and Mathematical Duality

In a few words, the new version has moved away from its DSP basics background to give space more advanced topics - in this respect, it has begun resembling, to an extent, the initial parts of Manolakis' other book (with Ingle and Kogon).

Although still relevant to undergraduate students or relative newcomers to DSP, many of the topics are now best handled at the graduate level, which already has a slew of good tomes on the vast subject (including one by Manolakis himself).

Moreover, if you need to study LTI and time variant systems, this edition is no longer of any use - stick to ed. III or look for Signals and Systems by either Haykin and Van Veen or Ziemer, Tranter and Fannin.

I have read many DSP books, this turns out to be the best one. The other good DSP book to mention is the "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" (Lyons) which is written in favor of beginners. The Proakis book not only explains the basic idea as clear as the Lyons's book but it covers deeper materials.

Modern Recording Techniques was the required textbook for a class on live sound reinforcement that I am taking. I was pleasantly surprised to find out how readable and user friendly it is. The author does a good job in breaking subjects up into bite size (understandable) pieces that fit into the bigger scheme of things. For a textbook this is actually pretty straightforward and useful. If you are looking for a single source of information this is a good book, and the campanion website has added features so that you can hear examples and find out more. I definitely recommend it.

I bought Huber's book on MIDI to be used as the text for a college class. When coupled with Modern Recording Techniques, the MIDI book made much more sense. Takes you from where MIDI left off and puts that knowledge to work. Again, written in a clear and concise manner, no frills, just good working and practical knowledge Buy both both his books.

The entire book is fascinating: it's absolutely packed with useful information and tips. Most of us remember learning in high school physics that sound travels about 1,100 feet per second, but besides gauging the location of a lightning bolt from how long it takes for the thunder to reach our ears, we never found it useful. Imagine, however, shooting a scene from about 90 feet away with a camera-mounted microphone. In this scenario, the audio will lag behind the image by about three frames--not much, but it's certainly noticeable. The problem gets worse as the distance increases. The workaround is to put a microphone next to the subject or slide the audio track so that it syncs with the images.

The book presents other solutions to showstopping problems that, because of lack of experience, a filmmaker wouldn't realize until getting to the editing room. 5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one book on sound.. This is it.......2006-09-09

Where do I start? In a nutshell, this book *IS* the only book to have on sound if your only buying one. No lie. My background... 20 years ago I used to be the "The Amp Dr" fixing commercial PA systems, amps, etc. I have a much better background on sound than most, I was an electrical engineer after that, designing power supplies, and other analog interfaces to digital equipment. Most of that has been dormant for the last 20 years, but I recently decided to make documentaries, and as two of my first projects deal with music, sound seemed pretty important. I got several books on sound, I figure buy six, one has to be good. You can save your money, this book was the one in six.

Knowing audio but NOT audio for video, one of the most important things I discovered is that a professional quality product (video) can only be made with good sound.. If you think you $2 -$10K pro-sumer camera is going to deliver it with the standard mic turn on "auto level", you're really wrong. Half of good sound is the absence of sound, or at least the absence of unintended sound. Insuring good sound is more work than it sounds, but the quality and impact of what I am shooting now is significantly better than before. Otherwise, its' all like home videos, maybe pretty shots and cleverly edited, but still seems like home videos. It all becomes much clearer after reading this book.

When I picked up this book, it was a mental orgasm. Not only does this guy know his stuff, even more importantly, he knows how to communicate it. The way it was written, I was easily able to skip over the stuff I didn't want to review, and go straight for the meat. It is meaty. Almost EVERYTHING I wanted to know was here. I did end up going back just to see how he explained the basics.. great! One of the things I liked about his style, is some authors will tell you something is bad or wrong, with no explanation.. Jay give you good examples.. the CD recording with the book is worth it's weight in , he give examples of proper recording and bad recording (with explanations). You can actually hear it as oppose to read an explanation and take it on faith. Borrow money if you have too.. but buy it.

My message to Jay:
If you read this Jay, I have a few requests. (1) Don't let this book go out of date. Please do you SNR and distortion measurements on some of the new HD cameras. Given the bit resolution is now even less with HDV (12 bits (HDV) vs 16 bits (DV)), I think dual systems are even more important to cover in greater detail. (2) Update with some of the new digital recorders that are replacing DATs (3) Thanks for a great book!

I've often been taken in by large reference books that promise to be a comprehensive guide to a subject, but turn out to be a lot of filler (screen shots of PC applications, or an excuse for the author to give lots of less-than-useful anectodal stories, etc.)

Not so with Jay Rose's 'Producing Great Sound for Digital Video' book. This informative guide covers a lot of ground, including sound theory, equipment explanations and use, and techniques for sound production including NLE tips, audio mixing, mic use etc. The great thing about this book is it is written with the expectation that your sound production values should be professional, but it's still accessible to hobbyists and those on a budget.

While I think novices to the field of sound engineering (like myself) probably benefit most from this work, I think a lot of the material here is useful to the video production community as a whole. I learned a lot from this, great work.

5 out of 5 stars A Top Resource for Anyone who does Serious DV Recording.......2005-04-23

This book is a top shelf resource. It is useful to both novices and those with more experience. Starting with the very basics, and that does involve some physics, it works its way through virtually all aspects of sound production for digital video.

Do not be fooled. You are not going to learn much to improve the built in recording that comes with your camera. The author is unapologetic in his broad condemantion of the built-in stuff in terms of both quality and usablility. He goes into the reasons and gives a bit of advice on making the most of what you have but this is not what the book is about. Instead, it is about exactly what the title claims. Unfortunately, this is seldom if ever achieved with the built in stuff.

After going over some of the basics of sound and recording, different types of equipment are described in terms of suitability to task and cost. After that, the actual use of this equipment is considered in a variety of situations. The book is not just concerned with equipment and its use, however. There are chapters on editing and even on the use of prefessional talent. In short, the assumption is that you want to get good quality audio for your video production. The author then describes how to do exactly that in a variety of settings. Unfortuately, doing the job sometimes takes a bit more effort than just pushing the record button on the camera. It also take a bit more money although it does not have to take a great deal more. It depends on what type of sound is needed and how you are going to use it.

If all you want is to catch the background sound in a home video, spend your money on something else. If you want to learn how to get the best possible sound for your particular need and preserve that sound to use with video, you need this book.

Every decade or so a book comes out that distills a lot if scattered knowledge on an important subject into one concise and comprehensible tutorial. This is such a book. It introduces new ideas on better ways to skin the proverbial DSP cat!

This book clearly explains sampling rate switching architectures and how they can greatly reduce processing cycles and simplify digital and analog hardware. I've used a few of these tricks in the past, but what an eye opener to see so many great examples of sneaky DSP.

Fred Harris makes it clear with vivid examples and MatLab illustrations that using multi-rate signal processing moves you into a whole new class of implementations. All the covered topics are clearly developed in a very intuitive way, without exceeding in mathematical formalism and with a special care for the practical implementations of the multirate systems. So all the derived algorithms can be easily ported into real systems.

This is a very well written book on multirate SP. You don't have to be a DSP expert to understand what's being explained. Prof. Harris has over 40 yrs of teaching experience and it shows in the clarity of his examples and explanations. I use this book actively in my system simulations.

Since fred harris is my all time favorite professor I may be a little biased. From what I have read so far it is in keeping with his style of being able to explain complex subjects in an understandable manner. After 30 years in the industry I am still using the tricks he taught me.

My only complaint is that some of the algebra should be worked out with a few more intermediate steps. The worked out homework problems are fabulous and sooo plentiful.

I wish I had the time to really read the whole book. My ECE201 course will probably only cover around 6 chapters.

I think this book is absolutely outstanding. I don't understand any of the negative comments. The cd that comes with the book is indispensble. It provides example after example. I actually bought schaum's outline of dsp as well, but because of all the examples on the cd (they are handwritten) I don't even have a need to refer to the outline.

In addition, I thought the content of the chapters to be very readable. The only downside is that because the book is dated 1998 the matlab code is out of date and some of the drills no longer work with the newer versions.

This is probably the worst textbook that I have used in the past two years. The book makes a lot of basic concepts seem very difficult and a lacks the proper examples to even explain what the problems at the end of the chapter are asking. The wording is very boring and tends to put the reader to sleep- making the poor explanation of concepts even worse. The authors jump around and often fail to define terms or use them before they are explained. The index has proved to be worthless in many of these instances. There are a lot of problems that I do not believe could be solved by a new edition.

I'm not sure who wrote the positive reviews here, but I can tell you as a student using this book that it is among the worst I've ever been stuck with and most of my classmates seem to agree.

The concepts are made much more difficult than they should be by poor writing. The authors jump around constantly, use new terminology at times before introducing it, and provide examples that are inadequate in helping to solve the problems at the end of the chapter. Stylistically, the writing is very bland and sure to put you to sleep. The first sentence of the book is "This is a book about signals and systems."

Sure, this book may cover all of the core concepts involved in signal processing, but trying to make sense of it when you don't already have a background in the subject is quite a challenge. After reading the chapters, we were unable to solve most of the problems in the book until given the answers were given to us. I've dealt with bad textbooks before, but this one tops them all. Needless to say, it was very frustrating experience and I can't say I recommend this book.
