Customer Reviews:
Poorly written book for the engineer. Might be useful for a mathemtician.......2007-10-03
Let me be the first to slam this book as having little practical use. The author uses a very unconventional, inconsistent notation that renders this book virtually unreadable. This is coming from somebody who has taken various courses in probability/stochastic processes, system dynamics, controls, and Kalman filtering.
The "theory" part in the title is dead on, but what about the "for the user" part? What user is this referring to, an ivory tower professor? Most of the problems at the end of each chapter begin with "prove", which in my opinion makes this a math book and not an engineering text. A practical example never surfaces in the text.
good reference.......2007-03-08
This book is a fundamental volume for whoever is interested in identification techniques. Theory is explained clearly.
A Complete Text for System Identification.......2001-09-12
This book is very through in presenting methods of system identification...mathematically. However as with most good mathematical oriented books there are not a lot of practical design type problems. One other mark aginst the book is that similar notation is used for different topics, which can sometimes be a bit confusing. One thing I might recommend, to a potential buyer is that you take a course in random process, and possess a through understanding of signals and transforms. All in all though if a little more meat in terms of practicality were added I'd rate this book a five.
excellent book.......2001-02-20
An excellent textbook for engineers, and a necessary reference for Matlab toolbox (System Identification).

Lots of Little Problems make for one big flaw.......2006-04-04
Like other reviewers I have found many problems that indicate lack of a quality technical editor. There are several typos per chapter most heavily concentrated in the math sections (missing parenthesis, squares, improper powers, units and just bad math). This has been typical for other editons of this book. I would not suggest using this text in a learning enviroment due to the confusion caused by the numerous typos.
good book.......2003-09-13
This book has all the ingredients of a good book: good writing style, well explained, proper diagrams, etc. The concepts have been explained well in this book. There was only one problem that i had in this book: The inital part in the FM chapter, the derivation adopts a different technique and somehow landed up with something different. It was different from what was being taught in the class and what was presented in other books, e.g. Electronic Communication Systems by Kennedy, Davis. I'm not saying its wrong, but was something totally different. Barring that, the text book is an excellent one. Well done.
depth of contents.......2003-05-05
i found this book veryuseful as a teacher and currently using this book to teach the undergraduate students in bombay university.

the "signal integrity" bible.......2007-05-13
Dr. Johnson gives signal integrity an identity, and tells you how to conquer a truly "black art" in electronics engineering.
As the data rates of electrical signals go up, the problems this causes are detailed, and solutions are presented that resolve the problems.
If youare doing high-speed digital design, high precision analog design, and want to make it work, this violume sheds light on the "dark" places.
Great subject material, unevenly covered.......2003-07-22
I had mixed feelings reading this book. Some sections were so good I was saying, "Bravo, well done" while other sections were so bad, I felt sorry for anyone trying to learn by reading them. (E.g. Ch4 on frequency domain modeling.) The book covers extremely useful material, but in an uneven way. It will especially appeal to readers who want simplified discussions of the ideas rather than deeper more theoretical discussions. For example, crosstalk --one of the most important topics, is covered in a very light manner, recommending use of simulators to obtain accurate results. Compare this with the coverage of the same subject in the remarkable book "Electromagnetic Compatibility" by Clayton Paul. Now, that book is "advanced" and "magical". This book doesn't get into any deep discussions of the fundamentals. It says that current flows in a loop, and inductance is related to loop area. Simple enough. Yet, how do we explain the inductance of the pin of an IC package, which is definitely not a loop? How is the energy-based definition of inductance used by simulators related to this simple definition? Even more fundamental, given that voltage can't be defined in a region where the magnetic field is changing, how come we can use the concept of voltage? (Read Paul Clayton for discussing all these concepts in great detail.)
Many previous articles are included in the book. Although some of them are entertaining (e.g. the pot hole story) most are just disturbances, and even worse, outdated and contradictory to authors later approach. For example, Dr. Johnson spends 3 pages! discussing how close a termination has to be, and drives an equation for the amount of reflection when the ideal termination is slightly away from the source. Later in a witty article the author declares that there is no more any excuse for not using simulation tools. He says "If you have to ask, simulate it." Definitely anybody who is wondering if their termination is close enough can download a free demo copy of PSpice and simulate this quickly and accurately.Nobody is going to use the equation the author drived and there is no new insight or theory developed either.
The author being the editor of the IEEE Ethernet specs, it is quite surprising how many sloppy mistakes there are. (KHz, kHz, Ghz, HZ,Hertz, hertz, pS, ps, ohm, Ohm, V, v, ; with and without spaces after the value are used with no consistency, "it's" is confused for "its" in more than one place, wrong equation numbers, irregular figures, mixed fonts and fonts sizes within the same equation, etc. are common occurrence.)
Despite its problems, this book will be a very useful reference book to people working in the field. Many sections have excellent detailed discussions. For example, performance regions of the transmission line breaking it into lumped, RC, LC, skin effect, dielectric loss, and waveguide dispersion regions is the most comprehensive I have seen. A useful book to add to one's library, but not a book lover's delight.
A must have reference for ALL digital design engineers.......2003-07-05
After ploughing through this book, I found it to be a treasure trove of useful information. It's well layed out, and well explained. As with their first "black magic text", it's full of helpful hints, guides, and rule'o'thumbs that will get you up to speed quickly so you can apply them and get expected results from your design. Well done Mr Johnson and Mr Graham, another excellent reference!

Book arrived on time and in proper condition.
Just another in a collection of books needed to make a Microsoft world function.
The LAST Exchange 2003 book you'll ever need!.......2007-01-04
This is, by far, the best Exchange 2003 book I've ever studied!
Great Book for both new and seasoned Exchange admins.......2006-10-11
Jim McBee has done it again by writing an amazing book on Exchange 2003 administration.
That was kind of a generic statement, right? I will dive into it in a bit...promise.
I own a small library of Exchange books, accumulated over 12 years supporting Exchange, and around 15 in the IT biz. If there was one Exchange 2003 book that I had to put on my shelf, this would be it. Many of the principles that Jim goes over may be easily applied to Exchange 2000.
Diving into the "amazing book" stuff a bit further...
Essentially this book bridges the gap between the printed architectural and design books and answers the question "What do I need to know in order to run my day to day operations?" as well as "What can I do to troubleshoot my environment and make it better?"
Many admins are plagued with not having a single book which delves deep into the guts of administering their Exchange 2003 servers and improving their environment. There are plenty of great books out there which will teach you how Exchange functions, how to architect Exchange servers, and how to plan your environment. However, books regarding the operation of an Exchange 2003 infrastructure are limited.
This book brings this type of information and melds it into a single source for operating a production Exchange environment as well as provides a great set of fundamental learning.
While all of the chapters are great and the information is enlightening, the Clustering 101 chapter is my favorite. As organizations need to plan for continuity of operations (COOP), clustering and clustered systems are gaining in popularity. This chapter provides some really great information regarding clustering Exchange.
I am a former Microsoft MVP, who participated with the LCS and Exchange MVP teams. I also participate in the Exchange forums of Experts Exchange. As such, it is easy to see when a great book is written. Jim McBee has written another winner and a great time saver. This book was definitely worth every minute.

Great resource for the professional on the field!.......2006-08-19
Firstly I'd like to say hello to Jim, I had the pleasure of attending a personal workshop by the man himself in KL for Exchange 2000...since then I've been a true follower of his books!
Ok lets get down to this book...it's been well written from start to end with concise information from the field, I've used a lot of his advice during my design and deployment phases.
It also provides great information if you are venturing deeper into the world of Exchange...so I'll say this book is for Intermediate to professional. A must have for Consultants planning on designing, deploying and migrating to Exchange 2003.
Overall it's a great book to carry around as a reference. Once again Jim...great book...can't wait for the Exchange 2007 copy!!

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive Book.......2001-10-30
Independent Component Analysis is a young and interesting topic that gained attention and still receiving more of it.
Until now this is the best introduction that has been written.
It is comprehensive, clear and unbiased.
I think that the book is a step toward making the subject not only a common field of research but also a reference for those looking for new challenging topics.
What worths mentioning is that the authors are very envolved in the development of the theory of ICA ,other books are good but are deviated by their author's own approachs and this is normal but unhealthy for a first book on any field.
What constitutes a great help for understanding ICA are the relatively easy concepts if one just intend to pick an algorithm(ex:FastICA), but this is not the case regarding its theory.
One colleague once argued that ICA should have emerged long before the begining of the 90's, claiming that Gaussian forms
(Central Limit-Theorem) killed the idea of dealing with other kinds of distributions and therefore the signal processing community went assuming every thing was gaussian (noise was gaussian, signals are gaussian),but the emerge of HOS relaxed the gaussian restriction and ICA became possible and no longer 'blind' .
I think this should prepare researchers to deal with coming challengs more intelligently and efficiently .That is why I recommend this book since it tries to give a broad view to the subject .
Nice and detailed description of ICA.......2001-10-27
This is a nice and self-contained book on the subject of independent component analysis (ICA). The authors start with relevant mathematical and statistical background (in Part I) to prepare readers for the derivations of ICA (though seasoned researchers may want to skip the first part of this book). The authors discuss the motivation behind ICA and present several ways to derive ICA (since this subject has been approached by several communities). The authors also compare and discuss the pros and cons of these approaches. The authors discuss several applications using ICA in Part III.
Compared with other ICA books, this manuscript has much depth and completeness. I highly recommend this book to any reader interested in this topic.

Book Description
The presence of uncertainty in a system description has always been a critical issue in control. Moving on from earlier stochastic and robust control paradigms, the main objective of this book is to introduce the reader to the fundamentals of probabilistic methods in the analysis and design of uncertain systems. Using so-called "randomized algorithms", this emerging area of research guarantees a reduction in the computational complexity of classical robust control algorithms and in the conservativeness of methods like
H-infinity control.
Features:
• self-contained treatment explaining randomized algorithms from their genesis in the principles of probability theory to their use for robust analysis and controller synthesis;
• comprehensive treatment of sample generation, including consideration of the difficulties involved in obtaining independent and identically distributed samples;
• applications of randomized algorithms in congestion control of high-speed communications networks and the stability of quantized sampled-data systems.
Randomized Algorithms for Analysis and Control of Uncertain Systems will be of certain interest to control theorists concerned with robust and optimal control techniques and to all control engineers dealing with system uncertainties.
The present book is a very timely contribution to the literature. I have no hesitation in asserting that it will remain a widely cited reference work for many years.

Book Description
Learn the latest techniques in programming sophisticated simulation systems
This cutting-edge text presents the latest techniques in advanced simulation programming for interactive modeling and simulation of dynamic systems, such as aerospace vehicles, control systems, and biological systems. The author, a leading authority in the field, demonstrates computer software that can handle large simulation studies on standard personal computers. Readers can run, edit, and modify the sample simulations from the text with the accompanying CD-ROM, featuring the OPEN DESIRE program for Linux and Windows. The program included on CD solves up to 40,000 ordinary differential equations and implements exceptionally fast and convenient vector operations.
The text begins with an introduction to dynamic-system simulation, including a demonstration of a simple guided-missile simulation. Among the other highlights of coverage are:
- Models that involve sampled-data operations and sampled-data difference equations, including improved techniques for proper numerical integration of switched variables
- Novel vector compiler that produces exceptionally fast programs for vector and matrix assignments, differential equations, and difference equations
- Application of vector compiler to parameter-influence studies and Monte Carlo simulation of dynamic systems
- Vectorized Monte Carlo simulations involving time-varying noise, derived from periodic pseudorandom-noise samples
- Vector models of neural networks, including a new pulsed-neuron model
- Vectorized programs for fuzzy-set controller, partial differential equations, and agro-ecological models replicated at many points of a landscape map
This text is intended for graduate-level students, engineers, and computer scientists, particularly those involved in aerospace, control system design, chemical process control, and biological systems. All readers will gain the practical skills they need to design sophisticated simulations of dynamic systems.
Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.
Customer Reviews:
feasible for the personal computer.......2007-05-24
Korn offers a recent view of Monte Carlo simulations. These have been performed since the 1950s. But Korn's approach emphasises what is feasible to you, on a standard personal computer. Buttressed by the enclosed CD, that has code readily modifiable to many applications. It is also nice that linux is supported, in addition to Microsoft Windows. Perhaps this is an acknowledgement that scientists and engineers might be more heavily represented amongst linux users, than compared to Microsoft users.
The dynamical systems covered in the book vary impressively. Though a discerning reader might consider that there's nothing qualitatively different from when Nick Metropolis and others at Los Alamos first started doing Monte Carlo simulations. Hardware is now much faster, and combined with vastly cheaper memory, makes the current book feasible. Also, granted, most of the differential equations studied in the text as examples might not have been done at Los Alamos. But these are differences of detail. The basic key inspiration remains unchanged.

ASIN: 0471466093 |
Book Description
As in the First Edition, each chapter in this new Second Edition is authored by one or more acknowledged experts and then carefully edited to ensure a consistent level of quality and approach throughout. There are new chapters on passive devices, RF and microwave packaging, electronic package assembly, and cost evaluation and assembly, while organic and ceramic substrates are now covered in separate chapters. All the hallmarks of the First Edition, which became an industry standard and a popular graduate-level textbook, have been retained.
An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available upon request from the Wiley Makerting Department.

Outstanding Reference for a Practicing Packaging Engineer.......2007-08-23
I bought this book for a packaging class that I took, but didn't realize how useful it is until I found myself in the position of managing subcon packaging houses. Virtually everything that could be needed on a day-to-day basis is contained within this book, except perhaps for tips on project management in the absence of carrots or sticks.

Title and Edition Confusion.......2004-03-29
There seems to be some communication error involved with Amazon's printed title and edition number and the actual title and edition number illustrated. I have purchased the book pictured and can tell you that the book is in fact entitled "Electronic Communications Systems Fundamentals Through Advanced, 5th Edition". It contains chapters 1 - 26 covering everything from electronic communications and modulation to SMA, microwave, cellular, fiber optics and data networking. If you previously owned the 4th edition I can tell you that some material has been added and some of the chapters have been rearranged. This is a great book for beginners and advanced comm students.
A book with lots of disappointments........1998-11-16
The author published two books almost at the same time, one is "Electronic Communications Systems: Fundamentals through Advanced", and the other one is this book. I did not realize that this book is a subset of the former one (from Chapter 12 to Chapter 20) until I bought one. So if you are interested in electronic communications, you don't have to buy this book. Go ahead to purchase the former one.
