Book Description
In 1980, Bruce Joyce and Beverly Showers predicted that staff development would become a human resource development system designed to change the nature of education, the status of school personnel, and the relationship between the two. In this third edition of their popular book, Student Achievement Through Staff Development, the authors offer an expanded guide to making that prediction a reality.
Through case studies of successful programs, evidence from research, and illustrations from their extensive experience, Joyce and Showers help educators design programs that measurably improve student achievement. They fill the gaps in staff development programs by answering vexing questions from both teachers and administrators:
* How can we develop the skill to implement new curricular and instructional knowledge?
* How can we embed the study of student learning into staff development?
* How can we adapt learning environments to meet individual needs?
The focus of the book is on the potential for both personal and organizational growth inherent in staff development programs. School renewal ultimately depends on the individual development of all its members. Joyce and Showers lead the way to creating a community in which organizers, providers, teachers, administrators, and students learn and grow together to achieve the goal of lasting student achievement.

Nuts and Bolts.......2006-03-21
Anyone who is either thinking about teaching a vocational course
or hiring someone to teach a vocational course, who does not have a teaching credential should buy this book. It's a little pricy, but it sure beats spending a semester in college for Part 1 of a teacher credentialing program.
It's basically everything in the Designated Subjects Teacher Credential course in one volume. Subjects like classrom decorum, lecture & lab techniques and student evaluation are thouroughly discussed. Normally teachers in vocational programs did not take college courses to prepare themselves to teach, they worked as carpenters or cosmetologists most of their life. This book takes them into the next step in a very productive career.

Truly a handbook..........2007-09-05
This collection of readings was so helpful to me, even as a graduate student. I used selections from this book when I constructed a class for teaching assistants. Topics covered include academic freedom and free speech, getting a job, the art of publishing, and discussion vs. lecture courses. Absolutely indispensable reading for the academic. Will be an invaluable reference throughout an academic career.
This is excellent!.......2007-08-08
This is a book I wish someone had told me about when still a doctoral student -- it certainly would have helped a great deal over the years. Things obviously would have worked much better and my transition from Graduate School to the professoriate would have been much smoother. Every graduate student and every new assistant professor needs one on their shelves. Not only that: Graduate Faculty, please buy one for your teaching assistant, your doctoral student and every graduate student you advise. It will do them a world of good and they'll be ever grateful to you!
Book Description
Higher education is becoming destabilized in the face of extraordinarily rapid change. The composition of the academy's most valuable asset -- the faculty -- and the essential nature of faculty work are being transformed. Jack H. Schuster and Martin J. Finkelstein describe the transformation of the American faculty in the most extensive and ambitious analysis of the American academic profession undertaken in a generation.
A century ago the American research university emerged as a new organizational form animated by the professionalized, discipline-based scholar. The research university model persisted through two world wars and greatly varying economic conditions. In recent years, however, a new order has surfaced, organized around a globalized, knowledge-based economy, powerful privatization and market forces, and stunning new information technologies. These developments have transformed the higher education enterprise in ways barely imaginable in generations past.
At the heart of that transformation, but largely invisible, has been a restructuring of academic appointments, academic work, and academic careers -- a reconfiguring widely decried but heretofore inadequately described. This volume depicts the scope and depth of the transformation, combing empirical data drawn from three decades of national higher education surveys. The authors' portrait, at once startling and disturbing, provides the context for interpreting these developments as part of a larger structural evolution of the national higher education system. They outline the stakes for the nation and the challenging work to be done.

Higher Ed Researcher.......2007-01-09
Excellent book if your area of research relates to the study of higher education faculty and their professional activities. Also look for a book from 1995 by Blackburn (Faculty at Work) that gives something similar from a decade ago.

Book Description
What does it take to meet the wide-ranging needs of beginning teachers? Based on a three-year study, the authors describe how comprehensive teacher induction systems can not only provide teacher support but also promote learning more about how to teach. For the past 10 to 25 years, induction programs in Shanghai, France, Japan, New Zealand, and Switzerland have provided well-funded induction support that reaches all beginning teachers, incorporates multiple sources of support, typically lasts two or more years, and goes beyond survival skills to promoting learning about teaching. With National Science Foundation funding and under the auspices of WestEd's National Center for Improving Science Education and Michigan State University, researchers conducted in-depth case studies of induction programs. They particularly focused on novice mathematics and science teachers. This resulting book calls for re-thinking what teacher induction is about, whom it should serve, what the "curriculum" of induction should be, and the policies, programs, and practices needed to deliver it.
Customer Reviews:
i didn't like this book.......2006-12-18
There is a negative tone set in the introduction, this book was not encouraging or uplifting, reading the whole book and didn't come away with new ideas or inspiration. This book repeatedly mentions the authors opinions without backing them up with experiences or research. I would have appreciated research to backup their statements or opinions. Also, I resented the (only) teacher of the year winner they recognized, that sitting in a desk and praying for a student each day, showering them with praise, worked to help the student... There is a section that lists everything you should have in a teachers desk, in the filing cabinet, etc... There didn't seem to be any unique suggestions I would think teaching experience would give them. Stapler and staples? No kidding. They jokingly mentioned handcuffs. Ha.Ha. I will not be keeping this book.
The Book Every Teacher Needs .......2005-09-05
This book is what I was looking for as a new teacher. It's the common sense things you learn as you go but reading this book teaches you them before your first day as a teacher. I wish I had it last year. It is also an easy read and won't take much time out of your busy teaching life.
Great for elementary only.......2003-08-06
For new teachers going into elementary school, this book is filled with good ideas and helpful advice. However, much of the writing is based on elementary students only. Most of the ideas would be considered too childish to use with middle or high school students. Also, many of the advice is clearly for elementary only (rewards for lining up in the hallway, giving students hugs, procedures for borrowing crayons, etc.) Looking at secondary teaching, I found this book disappointing.
Survival Tips no Teacher Should be Without.......2000-11-09
As a newer teacher in Middle America, I found this compact book to be an extremely worthwhile investment of my time and money. This book has lots of examples and advice to handle those non-education scenarios that often "make or break" a new teacher. Great tips on dealing with other staff (not all will be helpful!), parents etc. This is a book that will help all teachers, especially newer ones like myself, thrive and survive. Buy it. Read it. Its worth it (as is First Days of School by Mary Wang).
The Unauthorized Teacher's Survival Guide.......2000-07-28
As a preservice teacher, I have researched several dozen books of this nature, and I found this one to be the best. It is a compact size (for tucking into my book-bag or purse), and it has hundreds of real-world teaching tips, scenarios and situations for consideration. There's solid information on gaining insight into youself as a person and as a teacher, and down-to-earth and sensible information on how to be successful in the classroom from the start. I got a huge charge of self-confidence from reading this book.

Customer Reviews:
Good source of information!.......2007-03-11
This is an excellent selection for an instructor in acting to gain perspective and methods in the craft.
An odd book, not for everyone.......2006-12-01
First, this is not a book for beginners, although my school assigned it for beginning acting. It is much more involved in theory than practice, and so it is better suited for those with some experience.
Second, it says almost nothing about some of the approaches used in the UK or much of anything not derived from Stanislavski. There are two short chapters on "non-method" approaches. This doesn't really do justice to work done by members of the RSC, for example.
Third, his writing style is NOT for everyone. I believe the word "twee" comes to mind. At times I would have happily shaken the author by the neck for his way of writing.
That said, it does give a good overview of SOME of the great teachers and their methods. It is quite subjectively selective, so don't feel that you're getting it all, but it is useful.
Great book.......2005-02-04
I enjoyed every minute of this book. It was hard to put down. I actually have to buy another copy because the person who borrowed it from me swears I gave it to him.
Information needed for anyone in the performing arts.
Got the Basics Down.......2004-08-23
This book does an economical job of describing the major acting schools and the linear development of acting over the ages. It is a little bit boring at times while going through the different exercises. One cannot really follow the description of acting exercises, one has to have a teacher (as the book mentions). All in all, it is a well-written book that gives you the basics even if it is a little dry at times.
Brestoff inspires future major.......2002-09-25
I read this book over the summer after reading Stanislavski's An Actor Prepares and Building a Character while preparing for a rather challenging role. I found this book to be exceptionally written, extremely clear, and entertaining. I found all of the different schools and techniques of acting so interesting that it inspired me to consider majoring in it and possibly going on from there to receive my MFA from the Actor's studio. I especially liked the way that he arranged the book so that one could go back and compare different techniques. Because of this book, I am far more ahead than most people in my IB theatre class and I am able to apply what is going on within myself as I begin building my character and and as i watch my acting coach while she is directing a school play. If anyone is interested in theatre, acting,or just wanting to learn something new, this is definitely the book. If it were possible to give this book ten stars I surely would.
