Best Help and Fast Review.......2007-09-24
I first checked this book out from the library. It is so good , I purchased a copy from Amazon. This book has the normal words used everyday. It is easy to follow and you do it at you own pace. You are learning how to speak in easy short sentences. It has flash cards that speed up the learning process. Of all the reference books I have, this is the one I pick up first. This book will be great if you are going on vacation and only need to know certain things :)
Spanish in 10 Minutes a Day.......2006-08-15
This text is either for the very beginning beginner or a good review for the person who has been away from Spanish for a time.
It is done in a logical manner and in workbook form. It has stickers for nouns and cutouts for flashcards of the important beginning vocabulary in the book. It is fun to do and quick to finish.
A good Start .......2006-04-07
I have read almost all of the book. Along with the CDs I think the set would be very good for a beginner but not enough for adequate conversation. No conjugation rules mentioned. You have to be enrolled in a spanish teaching class to fill in the defecits that this set have. Overall I think my spanish improved alot from 0% spanish to 50% now, which is not bad to a beginner....
Wonderful Product.......2006-02-24
We are a homeschooling family and we were looking for a good beginning Spanish program. This program was recommended to me by several people so I thought we would give it a try. My daughter and I are learning together and we are finding this program easy to use and alot of fun. I think it would be a great program for older elementary (my daughter is 14) - adult. The CDs are a must because they teach you the correct pronouncation for each word. The stickers are a great way to incorporate Spanish into your everyday life. Excellent program. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to learning Spanish for educational purposes and for those who are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country.
Good for a traveler, Not for a class.......2005-08-12
I began using this as text for a class of mine, but quickly only used it as a supplement. You are to simply copy the words and say them in 10 minutes each day. It's a great theory, but very difficult to absorb any language through this method. The vocabulary is bent toward the traveler - what to pack, where's the restaurant, I'd like to order, that type of phrasing.
The color pictures make it seem like it might be aimed at a younger crowd, but the exercises were a bit stale for anyone under high school age.
Overall, this is a good crash course if you're about to leave for a week's vacation in a Spanish-speaking country. To learn how to truly communicate in Spanish, you need something more thorough on grammar points and practice. The fact that no CD comes with it also makes pronunciation a concern for the novice learner.
For the much younger child, Flip Flop Spanish is a great tool which comes with a CD.

Pretty cool! .......2007-10-02
I'm using this for my French classes and these teenagers love it! Interesting little supplement for daily inclusion in language acquisition for the eager French student.
OK book, small and handy, might be good for off-the-beaten tracks in France........2007-05-20
Bought this just before going to Paris for a holiday. Did not use it - as Parisians are really nice and were better at understanding English then we are at French. If I had to buy a phrase book again would buy one with better organization and presentation like the ones from Dorling Kindersley.
Basic Franch Survival.......2007-05-17
I just returned from my first trip to France, and found this phrasebook very helpful. The sections were well thought out, and pronunciation guides allowed me to be understood, at least most of the time. Also useful in this guide were tips on how to negotiate French culture. I would have found a small English-French dictionary a good addition, for words not covered in this fairly basic book. However, I was able to shop, talk with hotel staff, dine and even get my eyeglassses fixed using this guide. I would definitely recommend it for those with litle or no
French language skills.
getting around france.......2007-05-16
this little book is nicely layed out. Has everything a foreign traveler needs to speak conversational French. Nice and small for the pocket, yet packed with easy-to-find phrases and translations.
There's a much better phrase book available.......2007-03-27
After 2 weeks in Paris with this book in hand, all I can say is "what a disappoinment!" I bought this book based on other customer's online reviews, while my husband went to the bookstore, and carefully chose "Lonely Planet" French Phrasebook French: Lonely Planet Phrasebook. The difference was not subtle. The Lonely Planet version is beautifully color coded, for easy navigation, while Mr. Steve's book is simple black and white. Lonely Planet is a tiny bit thicker, but is overall smaller in size (nice for your pocket).
Mr. Steve's provides a small dictionary, lost somewhere in the middle of the book, with no indication of gender, and no assistance whatsoever with pronuncation of said words. The dictionary portion of this book alone, made the guide a complete waste in my estimation.
In addition, if I needed to find a word such as "expensive", it was not in the dictionary portion of the book at all. I assume this is because it was listed in the phrase section under "Le Yin et le Yang". By the time you figure out what section a word might be in, the tour bus has loaded, and departed for it's next destination!
Lonely Planet, and Rick Steve's book are the same price. Don't waste your money on this one!
btw: No, I don't work for Lonely Planet!

Perfect for Travel.......2007-10-03
This is a great guide book that I can stick in my travel bag while in Italy. I love it!!!!
Rick Steves does it again.......2007-09-08
Rick does a great job with all his travel materials and this is no exception. The book can definitely be a lifesaver when trying to communicate. There is good effort on Rick's part to get the phrases and structure passable without getting bogged down in grammar. Like Rick says, "you will be stringing together words in caveman like language in no time." He also has some fun stuff in the book that will make you laugh. I paricularly liked the descriptions for the quantities of alcohol- from a pint to a barrel he has you covered!
Best Italian phrase book ever.......2007-07-03
We have been using Rick Steve's books for many years. This latest phrase book is the best ever. An especially important section is the part on opposites which has proved very useful. It is organized very well and we would not be without it on our trips to Italy.
Rick Steves' Italian Phrase Book and Dictionary.......2007-05-26
Again - Absolutely BRILLIANT!
Highly reccommended to anyone going to Italia*
I spoke very good Italiano when I lived there in the 70's - but a bit rusty now - and my husband doesn't speak any at all - this is a must for Italia and Rick Steves' does it for us - as well as his books on Italy and Florence - Brilliant author - he covers everything you would need to know to visit this Beautiful country
We're natives now!.......2007-05-22
We are having a blast going through the book and learning new phrases/words for our trip to Italy.
Rick adds some great funny lines as well as the ones that you will NEED to get along in this wonderful country
Customer Reviews:
Good for learning vocabulary.......2007-09-23
If you want to learn a lot of individual words, this book is pretty good. It has a lot of lesson type activities in it where you write down the correct answer or whatever. I got about halfway through the book, then was a little bored and never finished it up. It isn't very good at getting you up to speed on conversational Portuguese. For that you need formal classes or the Pimsleur's Portuguese CDs. It does have a lot of vocabulary in it, with pictures.
Great Book - Meets my expectations!.......2007-06-14
I purchased his book because it was recommended to go along with Pimsleur Brazilian Portuguese Language CD's. I feel it is a great tool in broadening my base in learning Brazilian Portuguese. I really like the phonetic spelling when new words are introduced.
A very good companion book to the conversational learnining on Pimsleur!
Easy learning.......2007-03-09
This is the greatest book. I put the stickers all over my stuff at home. I learn a little bit each night and find that I retain more over time. It is very easy to read and breaks it into small bits for easy retention. I highly reccommend this book to anyone who wants to learn Brazilian Portuguese.
Great starting point to be followed up with Pimsleur CDs or other audio.......2006-12-14
This book was my introduction to Brazilian Portuguese. I found it easy to use, well-laid out, and practical. I am very visual, so it was helpful for me to learn the written language and then move on to the Pimsleur CDs. I might have been lost on the CDs if it were not for the foundation this book set. The pronunciations are often different than what would be obvious, so I think that the visual and the audio are a great compliment to eachother, though I would start with this. Don't do them both at the same time though or you may get confused! I am headed to Brazil and feel fairly confident I'll be able to get around - I have a simple but solid vocabulary from just these two sources. Also, in response to another review, in Portuguese (as well as in Spanish) the accent is always on the second to last syllable, unless there is an accent written above another syllable. They could easily have mentioned this in the book. If you know Spanish, you will move more quickly through the book, but know that they are very different languages, especially in pronunciation.
Good place to start.......2006-08-05
I am a native speaker trying to teach my hubby a few words for our trip to Brazil. I found the book very easy to use. Most nights he practiced by himself and I reviewed the material. He was able to get pretty good pronunciation using the books guidelines, but emphasis was harder. It think this is true anytime you are studying language through a book. The stickers were fun to use, we did label items around the house. After getting this book down we moved on to a CD ROM package which has been useful as well. My husband felt that the book did not do a very good job with teaching tenses and conjugating words. This is true, the books aim was to teach you useful phrases and words, you would still be limited in your ability to understand a native speakers anwers to your questions. However, after only one month he definitelty learned quite a bit. Even though I am fluent it is easier to work from a program, as learning from me is hit or miss, this way we have the basics covered.

Italian on 10 minutes a day.......2007-09-23
Italian on 10 Minutes A Day is simply outstanding. Easy to understand (and use) it gave me/us the basics needed to interact with our hosts throughout Italy. When one can purchase food, drink, lodging and a variety of retail 'treasures' without the fear inherant in foreign travel (at least related to language) one can enjoy more of what the culture has to offer.
Phonetic Learning.......2007-08-22
I love Kristine K. Kershul language products. Not only are the words written out they also provide how to pronounce them, as well as listening to learn. Lot of little activities to integrate what you have learned.
For the beginner, it makes it fun and easy........2007-08-09
We use this book for some beginners in Italian. It gets a person started, then he or she can move on to something more challenging.
Easy Italian for any age............2007-04-04
Highly Recommend this book and audio for beginners and intermediate Italian. My family is taking an Italian Class and the Professor uses this book!
Easy to follow and even if you are not taking Italian classes I recommend purchasing this book.
Cute........2006-09-02
Cute describes these books in the 10-mintues-a-day series. Pleasant, a little fun, a little insipid. But, really, not so bad just to get a taste of the language before you decide to move on to deeper study.
Actually--in contrast to more than one other reviewer--I found the word-substitution presentation to be quite helpful in anchoring the meaning of the word into my memory. This is not an untried method, being also used in the EasyLearn Language audio programs, and other texts.
Those word stickers don't stay on too long, though. Be prepared to lose a lot of them.

Confidence in speaking French.......2007-09-02
I doubt that you can learn a language in just ten minutes a day but this one at least gives you confidence to at least try to speak some french as a traveller and people always respond well to the fact that you have made an effort.
One of the most attractive features of this book is the simple system of pronuncation. Next is the logical way it sets about teaching you ie., the order of gettin to the heart of the matter. Some of the suggested ways of learning vocabulary can be expanded onWell worth the cost.
An excellent way to learn a language.......2007-08-23
These CDs are a very useful adjunct to the "French in 10 Minutes A Day" workbook. They are not a substitute, though, so be forewarned that you will need the book as well. The description of this product implies that the book is included, but it is not. Still, this is a great value and has been very fun and informative to use so far. I look forward to continuing with the program.
Great beginning step to learning French.......2007-08-23
I bought these right after returning from Paris knowing I was going back the following year. I didn't know one word of French before these CD's and when I returned to Paris I felt quite competent getting around. I wasn't fluent by any means, but these CD's focus on what you need to know as a traveler i.e. asking basic questions, making reservations, going to the post office, airport terms, ordering food, menu item names, names of shops and conjugation of common verbs. I learned a tremendous amount just by listening to the CD's. The use of different people on the CD's introduces various accents and helps reinforce pronunciation. The workbook lessons are a nice beginner level and follow the CD's and are good to reinforce the spellings and vocabulary. There is a glossary in the back which is also helpful. I highly recommend this set to anyone wanting a good first step to learning French or just wanting to be able to get around France on vacation. It made a huge difference in my confidence from the first year, not knowing a word to being able to walk into a place asking for a table, ordering my meal and paying completely in French.
An ideal self-study book to start with........2007-07-14
I bought this book for preparation of travelling to France in the future.
This book;
- is written in plain English.
- has lots of illustrations and is fun to learn French.
- has Exercises, Cross Word Games, etc. on each steps.
- includes effective study aids, e.g. Flash Cards, Sticky Labels,
Beverage and Menu Guide.
To sum up, this is an ideal "self-study" French language book to start with, not to mention "10 Minutes a Day Audio CD Series" make a great companion for the book.
Great Book for any level of French.......2007-06-07
This book is probably the best book i have used to improve my french. It is packed with games, exerises, imformantion, and pictures. It is only good up to Intermidates. Those who are already intermidates or advanced, i don't recommand it. It also has stickers on the back that you could put on varies places in your household. like if it is Lamp, but the sticker on the lamp, and everytime you turn on the lamp you say it in french. It also has flashcards. What is also helpful in this book is that not only does it have pronuncation on top on the word/sentance, but it has the english words underneath the exact word it is pronuncing. It is Highly Recommand, you will enjoy it!
Customer Reviews:
fantastic book.......2007-03-08
not enough said about this book, it takes you from basics to conversation.
Children's picture book for the deluded.......2006-07-23
The title really speaks for itself. I was desperate to learn Chinese quickly for travel, was up late, read the reviews, flipped out and bought it. Another romance language if you know one in 10 minutes a day maybe, Chinese if you speak English from a book without audio-not so much....
Let's review the logistics. They don't read English so you can't point to it. You don't read Chinese so you're looking at pictures (not when driving to work). So after dinner you paste romanized Chinese words around the house. Time's up. The next day you memorize a few words that may have a different meaning from the one you intend because you don't have audio phonetics and its a tonal language. Gotta go. The next day, you forget evrything because you only spent 10 minutes and you can't relate it to English. You do the math.
The approach reminds me of the Monty Python skit, where Hungarian tries to buy cigarettes using a phrasebook that inspires him to say "my hovercraft is full of eels" .
And as to the reviews, we don't laugh at Clark Griswold for saying "look at how greatful the French are when we make the slightest effort to speak the language...." because other countries are more grateful when we try to butcher their language. We laugh because he buys "French on the airplane" and believes it works. On the way to China, you're tired, you drink, its crowded, you don't read Chinese, unlike French, they can't read this book, you take out "Chinese in 10 minutes a day" on a 17 hour flight, oops that's my day. Exaggeration, but not by much.
You would either have to grow old or land in Hong Kong!
good to start a basic vocab and concept.......2006-07-01
This was a good book to start a basic vocab and concept of what would later be studied in the Chinese language. I use this book very frequently to start learning a new language and, the only thing that would be missing would be an audio guide to the book. Pronunciation in Chinese is very essential to the word and understanding of the language.
Iceberg.......2006-03-02
This is a good introductory book to Mandarin, but by itself it is incomplete. Correct pronunciation of basic sounds is critical to a non-native speaker before jumping too far into the language. Still, I'm a visual hands-on learner and I appreciate the visual association of words with objects as opposed to systems that employ only spoken lessons. What works best for me is a combination of the two. Consequently, an accompanying tape or CD would enhance this book greatly.
EXCELLENT TOOL FOR BEGINNER STUDENT.......2005-12-07
I have to start this review saying that i thought more than 4 times before buy this book.
For me the title was not to atractive (not too serious for a formal chinese student). But i have to say that since i received this book (with other three books to learn chinese), it got my atention.
This book has colorfull pages, beautiful illustrations, lot of useful vocabulary, and an interested way to introduce new chinese word in every text, even in english text.
Teachs you from you own language, make reference between english grammar and chinese grammar.
This book it's not ambitious, doesnt include chinese caracthers, it's focus on speak, and not to read.
With this book you will learn (at least) to say in chinese:
Where is the table? (nar you ....)
This is the chicken (zhe shi yi ge ji).
I want tea, (wo yao cha).
1,2,3,4,5... 1359...(yi, er, san, si, etc)
Red, blue, gray (hongse, lanse, etc)...
This is, that is (zhe shi, na shi).
Today is monday, see you tomorrow (jintian shi xingqi yi, mingtian jian).
Also include stickers with objects in chinese to stick to your table, clock, window, sofa, cat, etc,
At the end you will have a small vocabulary, but believe me, the way will be really funny.
The only lack of this book it's that doesn't include a CD, it's really important to listen the pronunciation, especially if it's purpose of the book.
It's a good tool for beginners, and if you want to start by yourself (and that's a lot if we talk about chinese).
Sincerely,
from the South of the World (Chile)
Carolina

extremely useful.......2007-10-03
I went to France not knowing any French except what I learned from songs, and somehow I didn't think knowing how to say "fish" and "will you go to bed with me?" would be good enough. This book was really great for a lot of different situations and was way more useful than my friend who claimed to know French from 3 years of high school. The pronunciations were particularly useful, although be careful if you get a "telecarte" as they might sell you minutes on a cell phone you don't have, not a telephone card.
French Booklet.......2007-07-03
Its OK, I didn't use it too much. Everyone speaks English. Would have been more helpful if I'd went into the more rural parts.
French: Lonely Planet Phrasebook.......2007-05-19
The book is very useful for traveling...as expected from a lonely planet speech book. However, it would be better with an audioguide to pronounce it correctly.
Useful in all situations.......2006-12-06
I got this book as a gift before going to Paris for a month and after taking one quarter of French at school. This book is so useful in very many situations! With my basic skills in pronunciation and grammar, this book carried me through at restaurants, metro stations, going out, etc. The two-way dictionary is also great because I had French people look up words they didn't know in English. There's also a funny romance section that I don't know if you would ever use, but it's a great read and my French friends love it as well. Overall I would recommend this phrasebook if you're going to France for a short trip and as long as you learn some basic pronunciation you should be fine!
Excellent Book to get around!!!!!.......2006-03-10
I was in Paris and with the phonetic pronunciation of phases the Parisians would understand us completely. I was so surprised!!! This book was very helpful and I would recommend it to anybody who needs to get around in France. I just bought the Italian version for my next trip!!!!

You will learn from this book, and enjoy it........2007-08-17
I found myself somewhat overwhelmed at my local bookstore by the number of books they had for learning German, so I decided to go with the easiest, most user friendly book they had, and picked up this one. I am very happy I did. I have really learned quite a bit from this book and have enjoyed doing it. This book has taught me enough, to know that I can in fact learn German, and has encouraged me to contiue onto more in depth books. Even though I agree, a CD would have made this so much better, the pronuciation guides are really excellent. The sticky labels are really a great way to not only learn a word, but remember it. If you're not sure you want to learn a language (or if you have to learn one and quickly) this is a really great book to start off with. Granted I spent more than 10 minutes a day on it, but only because I enjoyed learning from this book.
Super way to learn.......2007-07-07
After purchasing this book I took a college course - guess what, this book was the curriculum. Excellent book with lots of pictures and many engaging exercises.
Painless German Lessons.......2007-06-03
I'm using this book to teach a group of senior citicens to speak and understand basic level German. The pictures are great and the exercises are very helpful. The book focuses on learning words and phrases in an organized manner and does not frighten learners with grammar and sentence structure. I think an audio CD would go well with this, just so the audience would have a way to practice at home, or while traveling. Don't let the title mislead you...it takes more than 10 minutes to learn...practicing 10 minutes several times a day will do the trick. With language it's all about repetition.
Good exercise, but only as reinforcement.......2006-08-31
The author seems to have her heart in the right place and the book is well organized, but I really doubt anyone will learn more than number, colors, or other such items.
I've been working through a number of German books in my middle(ish) aged quest to be bilingual so I'm not a total beginner. I wanted an exercise book to do over lunch and I found this book on sale (
<$5). I would say I got about that amount of knowledge out of it.
The matching, fill in the blanks, and crossword puzzles were good, but so much is left out that you can't really understand any of what you are doing, you are just memorizing. For example, the author has you conjugate the verb 'sprechen' but never mentions it is an irregular verb that changes to 'du sprichst'. Later, the sentence structure where a second verb is unconjugated and moved to the end of the sentence is used by the author, but is never mentioned to the reader.
It was a good way to keep my head in German, but I can't say I got very much from the book.
Finally: A guide that makes sense!.......2006-07-11
After many books on Italian, French, Spanish, I finally found a learning guide that makes sense. Chapter 1: the alphabet. Chapter 2: key question words (who, what, where, when, why, how, how much). Chapter 3: Odds 'n ends (the words for "the" and "a"). And so on. All words are shown phonetically, as well as how they are spelled in the native German. Tear-out sheets for reviewing on the go. Peel-off stickers to put around the house. This one seems to have it all.

Just as the book's title said..............2007-06-28
Just as the title of this book said, this is a book about where famous persons are buried and also how they died.
I'm having so much fun reading this book because it gives a nice background about the famous person that died. Also, I did not know how 80% of the famous people in this book died, so those facts are a nice addition to the book (a sort of BONUS) .
There are other books out there that describe where famous people are buried, but I like this book the best because of the added BONUS of telling the reader how the persons died and some nice information about them, while they were still alive.
Very informative.
Every thing you needed to know..........2007-04-16
Short descriptions on the deaths of famous people. I would have liked a little more detail regarding the circumstances of the deaths, and less about the location of the graves. Still a great read and would recommend it to anyone!
Interesting facts I Never Knew..........2007-03-19
I love how I read about each person's career and accomplishments of their lives. And myths about their deaths and the real reason for their death exposed. Also where they are buried or perhaps they had their ashes scattered. Very interesting.
The title says it all........2007-01-10
A great book for those of us who are fascinated by the "permanent addresses" of famous people who have passed on.
The book was extensively researched and has many photos of famous grave sites.
"Graveyards are full of indispensible men." Charles de Gaulle.......2006-10-17
Tod Benoit has put together a wonderful little book that would be interesting to anyone. He tells us what happened to 450 well known people in their final years, how they died ,where they are buried and how to locate their graves. He covers people from all walks of life and no matter who picks up this book they are sure to find someone who they often wondered "what ever became of them"...and now they'll know.
I have been fascinated with Graveyards ever since I was a kid.Yes ,they can be macabre places,if you let them be;but if you are the curious type, they can be very interesting.
Tod tells us a bit about these people ,but the real interesting thing would be to visit these sites.Since they are scattered all over the country, that would be a monumental task. However; a visit to any graveyard can be an experience.
When I was a teen in the Army Cadets and on convoys, the popular place to set up the field kitchen was in the parking lot of small country churches. It was quiet, nobody aound and generally an old graveyard nearby. After eating, I would take a stroll, read some of the stones, and invariably find something of interest. You will find things like a whole family being wiped out by things like the Spanisk Flu in 1917. The grave of a soldier who sacrificed his life in some far off war or in the Civil War.Maybe a stone of some old fellow who reached the grand old age of 95 years, who had 5 wives along the way,and they are laying there by his side.
There is just no end to what you can stumble across;and whenever I get a chance and have a little time to spare ;I am never disappointed in what I come across.
I spend a lot of time Birdwatching all over the country and one often end up in a graveyard .It is those little ones way off on the back roads that hold the surprises.
For instance, when I was in Galway,Ireland,a few years ago,I had a morning to myself. I decided to check out an old graveyard in the center of town.I met up with a very popular sports figure who was on the cemetary restoration board of directors . He gave me a tour of the graveyard and showed me a plaque as a memorial to 300 sailors from the Spanish Armada who scrambled ashore after their ships had wrecked on the Irish coast. They were captured and all murdered by the British. The site was originally a monestary, but the British destroyed it and all the monk's graves had been covered up by a garbage dump, but now had been restored. He also pointed out a huge Celtic Cross that was made for the World's Fair in Chicago. After the fair it was shipped back to Ireland and erected as a family monument. I noticed that there was an iron bar, hasp and lock on one of those crypts a little larger than a coffin sitting on the ground. When I asked why the locked opening;he explained that there was not a body inside the crypt.Actually, there was a crypt for 6 below grade and this was an opening to the stairs. You learn something every day.
With the age of Internet,a search of many well known personalities will give their final demise and gravesites. Also many large cemetaries have books written by them covering gravesites and information of famous persons interred there.
Overall, a great book and shows how interesting graveyards and gravesites can be.
