5 out of 5 stars I never knew about any of this!.......2007-10-21

I love it when a book comes along that points out web site functions I never realized existed. This book packs a lot of information into a compact read, which makes it easy to get through but steers you in exactly the right marketing direction. The way he assigns ratings to the various marketing techniques helps one decide what to tackle first.

4 out of 5 stars A solid looks at the basics.......2007-10-14

As the author of the recently self-published Hokie Games: Virginia Tech Football Game by Game 1945-2006 I devoured the contents of this book to try to jump-start my Amazon sales. I can't speak to the results just yet as the portion of the suggestions that I have implemented has only been in place for a week or so.

In fact, part of the appeal of the book is that it's not supposed to show results yet. It's not a quick "make you book an instant Amazon bestseller" plan. The book has tips and techniques that grow your presence over the long haul. That's exactly what I was looking for and this book delivers.

The steps were easy to follow and the "why's" were well laid out. Obviously, the author did his homework on the subject of Amazon.

--Rich Tandler, author of Hokie Games: Virginia Tech Football Game by Game 1945-2006

5 out of 5 stars Great asset for POD authors.......2007-09-23

When I purchased this book, I was really quite skeptical. I figured that it was just a promotion of Amazon.com and not really any useful advice.

Then my wife and I published our first children's book, Santa and Sam's Big Secret through Outskirts Press. Although OP did a wonderful job of publishing the book, the major portion of publicity for the book was left up to us. We have been following some of the advice offered by Brent Sampson and we do believe that it is helping with the promotion of our book.

Sell Your Book on Amazon is an easy read. You can easily skip over chapters that you do not feel interest you, and still come up with many ideas that will help you to promote your book.

I would recommend this book to any authors who are using a Publish On Demand publisher. It will surely enhance the sales of your book.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you want to sell books too!.......2007-09-12

I wrote a book called, "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." It took three years to write. I spent another year sending it to publishers before I finally found a small publisher willing to work with me.

The Great Day came. I held my baby in my hands. I knew the world would proclaim her beauty. I was wrong, very wrong. A few friends and friends of friends bought the book. I was stunned and hurt too. But I kept trying to market my book the old fashioned way. I contacted the major book chains. To them I did not exist. I sent over 100 books to bookstores, and I never got a single order. I sent about 100 books to major newspapers, and I never got a single review.

One local bookstore, New Renaissance Bookshop in Portland, Oregon was very helpful. But the support of one local bookstore was not enough. I was almost ready to give up, but instead I went to Amazon and joined the Amazon Advantage program. I sold perhaps 20 books. Victory at last! Amazon loved me and I loved Amazon! And then I did not sell another book on Amazon for about a month.

I was ready to give up. But I knew my book could help readers feel better about themselves. I had received dozens of touching letters that left me feeling happy that something I had done made a difference in the world. Besides, I needed the money. Family illnesses had depleted my bank account and my debt was mounting. So, instead of quitting, I did an Amazon search for books on marketing books, and I found, "How to Sell Your Book on Amazon," by Brent Sampson.

I wish I had found this book a year ago. If you have a book you are trying to sell, or if you want to write a book, buy this book. Unless you are that rare writer who pens a bestseller, you will find yourself alone in a big jungle. Amazon gives you a path out of the jungle, and Brent Sampson's book is the guide.

Honestly, I have just started implementing his suggestions. So I have lots of work to do. After I finish this review, I will ask him to be my Amazon friend. I might ask him to review "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." He said to mention my book as often as possible without being obnoxious. And finally, he said Amazon friends are important. You see, if you become my friend, whenever anyone goes to your Amazon profile and clicks on my picture in your Friends section, there's a chance I will sell a book. And if someone clicks on your picture in my Friends section, you might sell a book. So, do you want to be my friend? Good heavens, I feel like a little kid again.

I will make a deal with you. In a year, I will write another review of "Sell Your Book on Amazon" and let you know how I am doing. Thank you, John C. Conley, author of "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening."

Book Description

A practical, innovative step-by-step approach to the writing process from one of the most acclaimed writing coaches in the country

In A Writer’s Coach, Jack Hart–a managing editor at The Oregonian–shares the wisdom with which he has coached reporters to Pulitzer Prize—winning success. He gives invaluable advice on gathering ideas, writing theme statements and outlines, and using the “ladder of abstraction” to add variety and texture to writing. He provides a lexicon of lead sentences. He shares his ideas for composing and sustaining powerful writing, and for ensuring that what you write will be accessible to your audience. Discussing the ways writers can trip themselves up–procrastination, writer’s block, and excessive polishing, to name just a few–Hart demonstrates how to overcome each obstacle. Excerpts from writers such as Ernest Hemingway and Joan Didion, and from articles gathered from magazines and newspapers, provide inspiration and instructive examples of both inadequate and exemplary writing.

Like a personal, portable writing coach, A Writer’s Coach will be a boon to writers, editors, teachers, and students.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For the Writer Ready to Move to the Next Level.......2007-09-26

Books on writing often reiterate the same advice we learn over time, the reader sometimes lucks out in using a tidbit or two. Realistically, no one has time to study the advice and put it to practice. Thus, it's not a bad thing for a book on writing to cover the things we've read before. The more we read about it, the more it stinks in.

But you can't read A Writer's Coach in the same way you read any other writing book. This one goes deeper meaning a reader may absorb the information better by reading one chapter at a time to understand and practice the concepts. Coaching an athlete to improve at something doesn't happen overnight. Thus, this book targets the serious writer who needs to move beyond the basic books on writing in order to take writing to the next level.

I try to avoid writing general reviews that tell the reader nothing, but Hart is a master in explaining the concepts of method, process, structure, and everything else he covers. It's difficult to capture them into a little review when I try to avoid long reviews.

Business and life coaching grows more popular because they're effective in helping people change behavior and improve. In thinking about coaches, I reflected on my childhood years when I played sports. The best coaches point out the right way to swing a bat, serve a volleyball, or shoot a basket. They also help players review their weaker moves so they can fix their form rather than let them continue using bad form, which will hurt them in the end. "Coach" is a fitting word in the title because Hart takes the coaching approach in showing the writer the right form for taking an idea from start to finish.

The book speaks more to journalists and non-fiction writers. However, much advice works across all writing genres -- so those who thrive on telling stories can glean a few valuable lessons from Hart. Expect to find high quality content that you find in the best college textbooks -- except subtract the stiff and convoluted writing. Hart's writing style makes the reading easy. A Writer's Coach contains smart, clear and logical guidance that will take a writer's writing skills to the next level.

5 out of 5 stars A new "writer's friend".......2007-08-29

A Writer's Coach: The Complete Guide to Writing Strategies That Work is a practical and comprehensive writer's companion for beginners, professionals and anyone in between.

Whether you write non-fiction or fiction, Hart offers examples of strategies and techniques for eliminating procrastination, breaking through writer's block, establishing and narrowing focus, and developing a voice-all vital components in any writer's toolkit. Also included are sections on the rhythm of words, and the mechanics of writing.

Hart, a former professor at the University of Oregon, and editor at large at The Oregonian, explains his method in a clear and concise manner easy to comprehend. Mastering the art of language is a process achieved by understanding and utilizing key strategies to expand your skills as a writer.

After reading A Writer's Coach, I have a better grasp on how to assemble my thoughts into a cohesive and focused structure, and convey them for better reader clarity.

Armchair Interviews says: A must-have book for writers at any level!

5 out of 5 stars So Useful!.......2007-03-29

I found Hart's book to be incredibly useful. As a professional editor and writer, it was refreshing to read a text on writing that was so well written. I also bought it for my father who is writing a book.

It reminds me of a good college text book, but with real-world examples and stories.

A key text for anyone considering writing a book, or for anyone who wants to improve their writing in general.

5 out of 5 stars Invest in this one!.......2007-03-24

Of all the writing guides out there, this one stands out for its balance between passion, precision and technique. You'll find some real gems tucked nonchalantly into the most unassuming paragraphs. Most helpful are the check-lists at the end of every chapter.
As a novelist, I gleaned a lot of wisdom and encouragement from this book. If you want to build a library of master teaching, add to this Stephen King's On Writing, and Donald Maass' Writing the Break Out Novel. These three are spot on.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Top Notch.......2007-02-28

Hart not only knows more than most of us will ever know about writing, he knows who else has written a helpful book. "A Writer's Coach" is full of useful and insightful information. Anyone who has to do any writing, whether for work or just letters to relatives, should read this book.

Book Description

A story with a big heart about a boy, a coach, the game of baseball, and the game of life.

"There are teachers with a rare ability to enter a child's mind; it's as if their ability to get there at all gives them the right to stay forever."

There was a turning point in Michael Lewis's life, in a baseball game when he was fourteen years old. The irascible and often terrifying Coach Fitz put the ball in his hand with the game on the line and managed to convey such confident trust in Lewis's ability that the boy had no choice but to live up to it. "I didn't have words for it then, but I do now: I am about to show the world, and myself, what I can do."

The coach's message was not simply about winning but about self-respect, sacrifice, courage, and endurance. In some ways, and now thirty years later, Lewis still finds himself trying to measure up to what Coach Fitz expected of him. 14 illustrations.

I bought this book for my husband. It was so very impressed with the story he finished it in a day. He really enjoys Michael Lewis' style of writing and has read several of his books. I would recommend it as a Christmas stuffer for any coaches, parents or baseball fans.

5 out of 5 stars How Sports Affect Our Youth.......2007-04-10

This short read on the high school athletic student is a must for all parents of athletes. You'll find out how the attitudes of student athletes are changing the face of high school sports.

5 out of 5 stars Every Parent of an athlete should read.......2007-03-15

This is a book that I will have parents read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-01-17

What a wonderful book. A short read - one sitting should do it, but a must read for parents and managers alike. I've bought over a dozen copies for friends and employees. A great story to express the change in attitudes of parents towards self esteem and how it is affecting our youth.

4 out of 5 stars Another good book from Lewis.......2007-01-16

I read this after finishing Michael Lewis' The Blind Side. It's a very short read -- basically an extended magazine article -- but well worth the ticket. I thought Lewis conveyed this retrospective on his high school athletic experience very well, and there are some interesting observations about the changing world of high school sports. Every coach, athlete, and parent would benefit.

Journalist Bill Geist, who is familiar to viewers of the CBS Evening News, used to be a Little League coach in New Jersey. And he somehow lived to tell about it. When first published in 1992, Little League Confidential assumed cult status as a baseball classic, though some just considered it one very funny book. Geist reveals the ups and downs (well, mostly downs) of coaching a team sponsored by a local beauty salon. His portraits of players and parents and his thoughts on competition in small town New Jersey are heartfelt and hilarious.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Little Leauge Confidential: One Coach's Compleletly Unauthorized Tale of Survival.......2006-02-27

I am sure the book is great-the book was purchased for a gift.

5 out of 5 stars I am Mean Gene Huffman.......2006-01-31

At least, I'm half of Mean Gene Huffman. Gene Ret and I were conglomerated into one large, gawky intimidating Little Leaguer. Who was the more large, gawky, and intimidating is one of the great debates of our time.

Great story. I never knew my drunken high school antics were witnessed by Bill Geist until I got to the end of the book. Geist saw me crash through his bushes and play some sloppy basketball with his son and friends for a few minutes while reminiscing about the old Little League days. And, he parlayed my mishap into a convenient parable on lost youth to wrap up his story.

Well, he's just lucky they were playing basketball that night and I wasn't trying to unload my ferocious fastball or swing a bat. Stay young, eat flax, and long live the glory days of Little League.

5 out of 5 stars Americana at its finest! (and all that that entails)..........2005-05-19

Anybody who has ever coached or played little league baseball is guaranteed to get a good laugh from this book. I love the kind of books that go under cover and tell what things are "really" like out there (especially with a twist) and this one is exceptionally well done. Little League Confidential is written with a very dry sense of humor that brings the story of a little league baseball coach to life. Particularly brilliant are the author's accounts of dealing with parents who complain about their child's playing time and position in the field as well as the behind-the-scenes draft meetings! Why does that kid with average skills and interest always get picked first anyway?! Any idea? hmmm...

All in all - an excellent and timeless summer read!

5 out of 5 stars So True!.......2003-06-05

If you are involved with Little League, you will see many true moments in this book. Your perpspecitve may be any of player, parent, coach, umpire, spectator. It is quite humorous and will have you both laughing and shaking your head.

Especially good for new coaches. You may have heard that Little League is "very political". It is. The author highlights many ways that it is and also gives very good pointers on how you can get "advantages" in this "non-competitive" environment.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Geist hits a home run!.......2003-06-05

What a fantastic, funny book. Anyone who has ever been involved with Little League or any organized kids sports league has to read this book. As I was reading Little League Confidential, I kept thinking that Geist, a reporter for CBS, MUST have had a video camera at one of my son's games. So much of what he writes is so hilariously on-the-mark , perceptive and insightful. It was just so much fun to read and very well-written.

Book Description

Coaching the Artist Within contains a dozen simple lessons. Eric Maisel, a leading creativity coach, writes each one with a novelist's flair, as a narrative complete with examples, exercises, and questions to help readers explore and reflect on underlying issues that may be keeping them from pursuing their urge to create. Topics include committing, planning and doing, generating mental energy, achieving a centered presence, becoming an anxiety expert, upholding your dream, and maintaining a creative life. Maisel has worked extensively with creative people - poets, filmmakers, novelists, dancers - and he revisits some of them in coaching sessions in San Francisco, Paris, London, and New York. Typical are the rock musician who wants to pursue a solo career and the screenwriter anxious to become a poet. Their examples both entertain and instruct, outlining how to discover one's personal muse - and the motivation to keep creating.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars No More excuses.......2007-09-27

Our Artists Group is using both Coaching and Fearless Creating by Maisel. We're excited about his no-nonsense approach to creating, good examples of others and really nice and practical exercises. This seems to be a nice second step following the Artists Way by Julia Cameron in nurturing and developing creativity and the artist within.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Self-Coaching.......2007-02-16

Maisel does a wonderful job of tackling the key issues involved in creating. His book is especially valuable in reinforcing the notion that to create you must create despite any perceived or real obstacles or burdens. Sometimes those burdens are self-imposed or generated by the usual fears. Oftentime they are just part of life. To accept them and persevere in spite of them is the only way to eventually create. Don Aslett preaches a similar philosphy in his book on writing and publishing. This can sound dangerously close to the Nike "Just Do It!" slogan but it's more than that, as Maisel elaborates and explains both in theory and in practice via anecdotes at the end of each chapter. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has any glimmer of creative urges within them.

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy it.......2007-02-14

I have Fearless Creativity this book has the same process orientated view mood about it. Pick up the book "Inspiring Creativity" instead which is a anthology and has views of 22 different creativity coaches. But the Intro is written by Erik :)

5 out of 5 stars Coaching the Artist Within.......2007-02-13

As a visual astist I found this book to be tremendously helpful! It is enjoyable to read and offers very pertinent information and advice on many of the difficult aspects of creativity. I have already recommended it to a number of friends.

5 out of 5 stars excellent teaching guide.......2007-02-08

Eric Maisel inspires us to have the "courage to create," as Rollo May's book is entitled. The insights and exercises he presents have helped my students and me overcome our self imposed barriers to creative expression. Maisel includes stories of people he has coached to drive home his points. A fascinating book to enjoy and put to practical use in your own life.

Hall of Fame philosopher Yogi Berra's When You Come to a Fork in the Road, Take It! is another volume of musings and malaprops, and the advice implicit in the title is sound indeed. Just listen: "Throughout life you come to serious forks in the road--decisions," Yogi tells us. "Which path do you choose? Sometimes it's tough. People are always afraid of making the wrong choice." Not Yogi, who explains that tragedy lies in paralysis, not bad choices or regrets, and offers personal examples from on and off the field to prop up his profundity.

Like its predecessor, The Yogi Book, Fork is essentially a collection of Yogi's well-traveled observations from out of left field, but it's much more than just déjà vu all over again. Instead of explaining, as he has before, what prompted a particular Yogi-ism or what he was really trying to say, Yogi does his best to go deep. The charm is that Yogi's so guileless, he makes it work--there's sagacity in his simplicity. Each Yogi-ism gets its own short chapter in which Yogi riffs off the phrase to dispense a bit of homespun wisdom and inspiration. "It gets late early out there"--we get old before we're ready, but here's how to cope with it. "If you can't imitate him, don't copy him"--we all need to be true to ourselves. With Yogi's latest career as a successful author, not only ain't it over for him, there's happily no end in sight. --Jeff Silverman

A collection of appealing, funny, and surprisingly moving essays on life, happiness, and getting through the slumps from the bestselling author and celebrated athlete. Filled with more of Yogi's inimitable and unwittingly wise aphorisms, these reflections focus on the valuable lessons Berra has learned on and off the field. From his early years as an immigrant's son through his triumphant career as a player and manager who played in a record seventy-five World Series games, Yogi illustrates his homespun philosophies with apt analogies to his baseball stories. This wise, humble, touching book is vintage Yogi Berra--in short, deja vu all over again.

    5 out of 5 stars Yogi-isms explained by Yogi.......2007-10-14

While the basis of this book is a collection of some of the Yogi-isms, which always contain a great deal of truth, the best part is that Yogi explains his thoughts on each one of them, While he was a great player for a series of great Yankee teams, Berra was always thought of as a bit of a simpleton. His most famous sayings, where he used internal contradictions to make a point, are funny and seem to indicate a lack of knowledge of English and how it is used. However, it is that internal contradiction that makes the point so well. For example, some of the -isms explained in this book are:

*) It gets late early out there
    *) We have deep depth
*) Always go to other peoples funerals, otherwise they won't go to yours
*) You can observe a lot by watching

After each of the -isms, Berra explains the context within which he made the statement and reveals a great deal of the history of his life, his thoughts about life in general and the directions that baseball is going. He comes across as a man who came from humble beginnings, yet has never lost contact with those roots and who was always in control of his actions. He harbors no jealousy regarding what modern ballplayers make, although he has some negative words concerning their off the field actions. He is also saddened by the decline in the popularity of young people playing baseball. It is a rare occasion when you see pickup games being played on the sandlots. He also laments the situation in organized youth baseball such as little league. Like all other youth sports, there is a fierce and counter-productive competitiveness that destroys the joy that children have the right to feel when they are playing engaged in sports.
This is a book about and by a man that is close to being the most quoted person in the American society. His phrases are used in many facets of our lives, from sports to politics. Hardly a week goes by when I don't hear one of his phrases and I often use them myself. It was fun to read Yogi's explanations of them.

4 out of 5 stars Come for the Wisdom, Stay for the Photos.......2005-02-02

Yogi Berra has learned that when someone offers to publish your book, take it. Make the most of living, it can get late early out there. Better make your book forty chapters, the public may not be hungry for fifty.

More of a look into the thoughts, values and beliefs of the baseball legend than a biography, Yogi keeps things pretty straight. Unapologetic and proud of his life, Yogi is not above owning up to a character flaw or two. If he seems to occasionally contradict himself, he comes across as all the more human. This is certainly preferable to the self-service approach others have taken in this type of book, making it a cut above the "self-help from athletes" genre. Every chapter is titled with a piece of philosophical advice, virtually all from Yogisms or in one case a Dimaggioism. Sometimes the content of a chapter is shoehorned to fit the title, but most of the time they mesh.

The best part of the book are the photos that appear at the beginning of each chapter. Rarely seen family and career photos are incorporated with such gems as Yogi and Phil Rizzuto working during the off season at a men's clothing store. These photos tell more about the Yogi that you didn't know than the text does.

If this review doesn't make you want to read this book, I'm not going to try and stop you. Then again, if these type of books get too popular, no one's going to want to read them anymore.

    4 out of 5 stars A Fast Fun Read.......2005-01-02

Yogi surprisingly give some good words of wisdom and convinces us that there is more to the mental make-up of one of the greatest ballplayers ever than the quotes that he is known for.

Yogi provides a lot of insights to life in general and provides a lot of good advice in a book that I read in less than 2 hours. Based on the price it is probably better to take it from the library, than to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars We can all learn a lot from Yogi Berra.......2004-04-25

Yogi Berra is an American treasure, epitomizing many of the things that make America great. As a legend in life as well as a legend in baseball, the common-sense pearls of wisdom that drop from his lips are as instructive as they are humorous. I consider Yogi the common man's philosopher. This book offers forty chapters, each containing helpful advice, based upon a famous Yogi-ism, as well as inspiration to the reader. Most of us already know most of these lessons, but we need to be reminded of them periodically. Yogi is the perfect teacher. He is humble and honest, perfectly willing to use his own failures as well as his successes as object lessons for the rest of us; he also speaks from the heart in plain language. I love the unpretentious nature of this book; maybe it breaks a few rules of proper grammar, but it comes across in such a way that you half believe Yogi is sitting in the room with you and just talking. Yogi does offer up a number of parallels between baseball and business, stressing the importance of true teamwork, loyalty, and the personal involvement and commitment of all involved, but most of the lessons he imparts here are lessons about life and the proper way to live it. All the inspiration and wisdom aside, though, I have to admit that what I enjoy the most is Yogi's baseball stories. Baseball was a different game back when Yogi was playing, and I'm sure I'm not the only fan whose love of the game has faded as the game has turned into an impersonal industry. Yogi represents baseball at its best.

I also enjoyed learning a little more about Yogi's personal life - heck, I didn't even know how he got the name Yogi before I read this book. Here's a kid born in St. Louis to first-generation immigrants who quit school after eighth grade and pursued a dream that many people said he would never attain. All he did was play on ten World Series championship teams, earn three MVP awards, and become one of the most-loved baseball heroes of all time - heck, I bet there are even some Red Sox fans who love Yogi. He is also a war hero, having fought in the D-Day landing at Normandy. (He also played a brain surgeon on an episode of General Hospital back in the early 1960s, as I was quite shocked to learn.) With all of his success, though, he has always been remarkably humble and quick to thank those who made his good fortune possible. He is a great role model for kids as well as adults, and we all can learn a great deal about life by heeding his practical advice.

5 out of 5 stars Straight talk from Yogi.......2004-04-18

This collection of short snippets of wisdom from Yogi Berra is an enjoyable and ,yes, profitable read. Yogi is a man of great integrity and dignity and those qualities shine through on every page of this simple and relatively quick read. Pick it up and read it on your next long flight.

5 out of 5 stars White Collar People need a Tarot Deck too!.......2007-09-25

This deck was my hook into the world of Tarot. I call it the "executive" deck. For personal reasons I didn't want to read cards with overwhelming Occult symbology. When I found some of the cards in the Tarot of the Saints deck by the same publisher to be a bit of a stretch I found myself buying this deck.
I now read with a mixed deck of 78 cards made from 5 different decks, the majority of the cards from the Bright Ideas deck. I find the stories told by each card very useful, (although a bit specific occasionally, still very useful) And the descriptive words on the cards helpful to me as a new to card reader. White-collar people, cubicle workers, PowerPoint masters, and tie-wearers need Tarot, too! And this is their deck! Thanks Mark & Eric!

2 out of 5 stars No spark from artwork.......2007-05-13

I guess that when I read about this deck and first read through the booklet that accompanies it, I was hoping for more inspirational guidance through the art in the deck itself. Instead, it looks like a very low-grade attempt to sum up very vague concepts. It also seems to be geared more toward the white-collar cubicle worker. I can see how someone who lives in the world of PowerPoint and bullet statements may be able to stretch out of their very tight box by using of this tarot for tie-wearers, but I feel very let down and wish I hadn't wasted my money.

      5 out of 5 stars Sheer Genius!.......2007-02-06

Used as a tool for relection and introspection, the tarot can be a wonderful creative problem-solver--ora way to solve creative problems. When I am banging my head against the wall, this deck never fails to come to my aid.

4 out of 5 stars Contemporary and Clever.......2006-01-20

This is a tarot deck and book set that nowhere mentions the word tarot (except in the "About the Author" note inside the front cover). It instead describes itself as an "idea processor and brainstorming tool" suitable for business and personal use. Nonetheless, it is a true tarot, with 22 Trumps (with purple borders) and four suits, named Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green. The courts are renamed Learning, Doing, Feeling, and Controlling. The cards have keywords/titles (mostly compatible with Golden Dawn/Rider-Waite-Smith meanings), and the suit cards are scenic.

The illustrations are very contemporary. Many characters are depicted in business suits, and the Chariot (titled "Advancement") is a Segway! I quite like the illustration style--bright, defined, and, yes, business-like. Also, many of the characters are gender-ambiguous, which is good for wider interpretations.

My main impression of this set is clever, clever, clever. The trumps each have a design element that refers to the Hebrew letter associated with that card (GD attributions: Fool = Aleph). Advancement shows the Segway and rider crashing through a white picket fence. The Hebrew letter for Chariot is cheth, which means fence. Examination (Judgment) shows teeth, from the viewpoint of inside the mouth looking out (!), being examined by a dentist. The letter for Judgment is shin, tooth. Also, the book often manages to work the traditional card title and/or imagery into the Commentary section for each card. Even though the card depicts someone standing in a boat wearing an "iron mask," the Commentary for Perspective says, "His future hangs in the balance, swinging to and fro like a traitor from a tree." Card also have their astrological signs and/or planet symbols hidden somewhere in the illustration.

I thoroughly enjoy these clever elements, as I think all tarot lovers will, but I wonder how someone coming to this deck as a business tool will feel when they discover its esoteric/magical background. Will they be intrigued enough to find out more about tarot, or feel tricked into using something that is a cover for an unacceptable method or premise?

The book is well written and thought-provoking. It has several spreads, "brainstorming" (reading) examples, and "Fifty Things to do with the Bright Idea Deck." I love the "What Would the Trumps Do?" section, which gives a list of five people who exemplify each trump. For Experience (Hermit), it lists "someone with unlimited time; an expert in this field; a wise old man; a loner; a do-it-yourself specialist." For each card the book gives Associations (what the card "encourages" and "cautions against"), Exploration (brainstorming questions about the image and concept), and Commentary (a paragraph-or-two expansion on the concept of the card).

It would be interesting to compare this deck with Gay Tarot and Pagan Tarot, two other decks with contemporary illustrations (featuring sideways baseball caps and desktop computers).

I recommend this deck if you like bold contemporary illustrations and/or a new take on the Golden Dawn tradition. And especially if you like your tarot clever!

3 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2005-08-17

This book takes the standard wands cups hearts and swords and instead breaks them down to their inspired units. Problem is it's not very inspired and rather droll. The worst is the lack of symbmols put this akin to the Ator Tarot, simplistic and getting more than a basic reading that pulls you and makes your mind alive, just isn't there. [...]
