After Mr. Blackburn retired from Westinghouse, he became a consultant and proceeded to put the material in this book together. It was a labor of love, for a lot of people have said that the practice of protective relying is like black magic because there are many correct ways to protect a system, they all have problems but it is up to the practitioner to determine the best solution for a given situation. Mr. Blackburn poured his years of experience and expertise into this book. He tried to do this in a systematic manner in order to reduce the amount of ambiguity usually associated with the black arts. I believe he has succeeded.
I would agree with the others that the second edition was a letdown from the first, but then again, most first editions are more informative because authors wrote "their" book with the first edition, the following editions are ususally to answer the critics and publishers.

ASIN: 1852338164 |
Book Description
The problem of greenhouse gas (particularly carbon dioxide) release during power generation in fixed and mobile systems is widely acknowledged. Fuel cells are electrochemical devices offering clean and efficient energy production by the direct conversion of gaseous fuel into electricity. As such, they are under active study for commercial stationary power generation, residential applications and in transportation. The control of fuel cell systems under a variety of environmental conditions and over a wide operating range is a crucial factor in making them viable for extensive use in every-day technology.
In Control of Fuel Cell Power Systems the application of fuel cells in automotive powertrains is emphasized because of the significance of the contribution to global CO 2 emissions made by ground vehicle propulsion and because of the challenge presented by the accompanying control problems. The authors’ comprehensive control-oriented approach provides:
• An overview of the underlying physical principles and the main control objectives and difficulties associated with the implementation of fuel cell systems.
• System-level dynamic models derived from the physical principles of the processes involved.
• Formulation, in-depth analysis and detailed control design for two critical control problems, namely, the control of the cathode oxygen supply for a high-pressure direct hydrogen fuel cell system and control of the anode hydrogen supply from a natural gas fuel processor system.
• Multivariable controllers that attenuate restraints resulting from lack of sensor fidelity or actuator authority.
• Real-time observers for stack variables that confer redundancy in fault detection processes.
• Examples of the assistance of control analysis in fuel cell redesign and performance improvement.
• Downloadable SIMULINK® model of a fuel cell for immediate use supplemented by sample MATLAB® files with which to run it and reproduce some of the book plots.
Primarily intended for researchers and students with a control background looking to expand their knowledge of fuel cell technology, Control of Fuel Cell Power Systems will also appeal to practicing fuel cell engineers through the simplicity of its models and the application of control algorithms in concrete case studies. The thorough coverage of control design will be of benefit to scientists dealing with the electrochemical, materials and fluid-dynamic aspects of fuel cells.

Good book with ~no math (extremist).......2004-11-10
very good..........2003-02-04
the books that cover COUPLED NETWORKS (x,y,z parameteres) don't cover much on filters or waveshaping circtuis (RC/RL integrators and differentiators) ..
and the books that cover the waveshaping and filters.. don't cover the coupled networks topic
this book covers waveshaping and filters very well.. but no mention of COUPLE NETWORK techniques... which are integral to TRULY understanding the subsequent ELECTRIC DEVICES courses...
otherwise.. the rest is very well presented
Focuses on fundamentals and provides good applications.......2000-10-25
It has a CD in the back that I haven't tried yet, but looks interesting. The CD has more experiments with circuits using a simulator or two.

Wind Turbine Control Systems: Principles, Modelling and Gain Scheduling Design (Advances in Industrial Control)
Fernando D. Bianchi , Hernán De Battista , and Ricardo J. Mantz Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1846284929 |
Book Description
Modern wind turbines generally operate at variable speed in order to maximise the conversion efficiency below rated power and to reduce loading on the drive-train. In addition, pitch control of the blades is usually employed to limit the energy captured during operation above rated wind speed. The higher complexity of variable-speed variable-pitch turbines is offset by the benefits of control flexibility, namely, higher conversion efficiency, better power quality, longer useful life; because of the immediate impact of control on the cost of wind energy, reliable high-performance controllers are essential in making wind technology competitive.
In Wind Turbine Control Systems the application of linearparameter varying (LPV) gain scheduling techniques to the control of wind energy conversion systems is emphasised. This recent reformulation of the classical gain scheduling problem allows a straightforward design procedure and simple controller implementation. The monograph provides a thorough coverage of wind turbine control, including:
• an overview of the principles of wind energy conversion;
• the control-oriented modelling of wind turbines;
• an in-depth analysis of the most common control strategies;
• the design of LPV gain-scheduled controllers for both fixed- and variable-pitch, variable-speed wind turbines.
Wind Turbine Control Systems is primarily intended for researchers and students with a control background wishing to expand their knowledge of wind energy systems. The book will be useful to scientists in the field of control theory looking to apply their innovative control ideas to this appealing control problem and will also interest practising engineers dealing with wind technology who will benefit from the comprehensive coverage of the theoretic control topics, the simplicity of the models and the use of commonly available control algorithms.
