Producing Great Sound for Digital Video educates beginning and experienced filmmakers on the intricacies of creating an outstanding soundtrack, from preproduction planning through the final mix.

The entire book is fascinating: it's absolutely packed with useful information and tips. Most of us remember learning in high school physics that sound travels about 1,100 feet per second, but besides gauging the location of a lightning bolt from how long it takes for the thunder to reach our ears, we never found it useful. Imagine, however, shooting a scene from about 90 feet away with a camera-mounted microphone. In this scenario, the audio will lag behind the image by about three frames--not much, but it's certainly noticeable. The problem gets worse as the distance increases. The workaround is to put a microphone next to the subject or slide the audio track so that it syncs with the images.

The book presents other solutions to showstopping problems that, because of lack of experience, a filmmaker wouldn't realize until getting to the editing room. Other critical issues such as preproduction planning, the art of production and recording (including environmental factors and microphone setups), and post-production editing and effects are also discussed.

The advent of low-cost, high-quality video production equipment has ushered in the birth of AV producers and AV presenters who have grand intentions but negligible experience. Digital cameras, inexpensive computers capable of capturing and playing back high-quality digital video, and full-featured editing software offer all kinds of ways to create visual eye candy, but embryonic filmmakers don't always realize that the picture is only half the story. Producing Great Sound for Digital Video explains how the other half works, what to watch out for, and how to achieve professional results. --Mike Caputo

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-19

for anyone that wants to have a professional approach to digital video this is a good book.

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one book on sound.. This is it.......2006-09-09

Where do I start? In a nutshell, this book *IS* the only book to have on sound if your only buying one. No lie. My background... 20 years ago I used to be the "The Amp Dr" fixing commercial PA systems, amps, etc. I have a much better background on sound than most, I was an electrical engineer after that, designing power supplies, and other analog interfaces to digital equipment. Most of that has been dormant for the last 20 years, but I recently decided to make documentaries, and as two of my first projects deal with music, sound seemed pretty important. I got several books on sound, I figure buy six, one has to be good. You can save your money, this book was the one in six.

Knowing audio but NOT audio for video, one of the most important things I discovered is that a professional quality product (video) can only be made with good sound.. If you think you $2 -$10K pro-sumer camera is going to deliver it with the standard mic turn on "auto level", you're really wrong. Half of good sound is the absence of sound, or at least the absence of unintended sound. Insuring good sound is more work than it sounds, but the quality and impact of what I am shooting now is significantly better than before. Otherwise, its' all like home videos, maybe pretty shots and cleverly edited, but still seems like home videos. It all becomes much clearer after reading this book.

When I picked up this book, it was a mental orgasm. Not only does this guy know his stuff, even more importantly, he knows how to communicate it. The way it was written, I was easily able to skip over the stuff I didn't want to review, and go straight for the meat. It is meaty. Almost EVERYTHING I wanted to know was here. I did end up going back just to see how he explained the basics.. great! One of the things I liked about his style, is some authors will tell you something is bad or wrong, with no explanation.. Jay give you good examples.. the CD recording with the book is worth it's weight in , he give examples of proper recording and bad recording (with explanations). You can actually hear it as oppose to read an explanation and take it on faith. Borrow money if you have too.. but buy it.

My message to Jay:
If you read this Jay, I have a few requests. (1) Don't let this book go out of date. Please do you SNR and distortion measurements on some of the new HD cameras. Given the bit resolution is now even less with HDV (12 bits (HDV) vs 16 bits (DV)), I think dual systems are even more important to cover in greater detail. (2) Update with some of the new digital recorders that are replacing DATs (3) Thanks for a great book!

5 out of 5 stars A rare 'how to' book that delivers actual content!.......2006-01-05

I've often been taken in by large reference books that promise to be a comprehensive guide to a subject, but turn out to be a lot of filler (screen shots of PC applications, or an excuse for the author to give lots of less-than-useful anectodal stories, etc.)

Not so with Jay Rose's 'Producing Great Sound for Digital Video' book. This informative guide covers a lot of ground, including sound theory, equipment explanations and use, and techniques for sound production including NLE tips, audio mixing, mic use etc. The great thing about this book is it is written with the expectation that your sound production values should be professional, but it's still accessible to hobbyists and those on a budget.

While I think novices to the field of sound engineering (like myself) probably benefit most from this work, I think a lot of the material here is useful to the video production community as a whole. I learned a lot from this, great work.

5 out of 5 stars A Top Resource for Anyone who does Serious DV Recording.......2005-04-23

This book is a top shelf resource. It is useful to both novices and those with more experience. Starting with the very basics, and that does involve some physics, it works its way through virtually all aspects of sound production for digital video.

Do not be fooled. You are not going to learn much to improve the built in recording that comes with your camera. The author is unapologetic in his broad condemantion of the built-in stuff in terms of both quality and usablility. He goes into the reasons and gives a bit of advice on making the most of what you have but this is not what the book is about. Instead, it is about exactly what the title claims. Unfortunately, this is seldom if ever achieved with the built in stuff.

After going over some of the basics of sound and recording, different types of equipment are described in terms of suitability to task and cost. After that, the actual use of this equipment is considered in a variety of situations. The book is not just concerned with equipment and its use, however. There are chapters on editing and even on the use of prefessional talent. In short, the assumption is that you want to get good quality audio for your video production. The author then describes how to do exactly that in a variety of settings. Unfortuately, doing the job sometimes takes a bit more effort than just pushing the record button on the camera. It also take a bit more money although it does not have to take a great deal more. It depends on what type of sound is needed and how you are going to use it.

If all you want is to catch the background sound in a home video, spend your money on something else. If you want to learn how to get the best possible sound for your particular need and preserve that sound to use with video, you need this book.

5 out of 5 stars You will understand sound after this book.......2005-03-02

Audio is really important, and this book will make sure you get incredible sound at every shoot. I really recommend this book!

Book Description

Producing 24pP Video demystifies the emerging standards of film and video production and discusses the 24p video film format to help novice and experienced filmmakers alike learn how to better use the newly available DV cameras. Since the 24p frame rate closely approximates the look and feel of film, it is the speed of choice whenever a "cinematic" look is desired. 24p video also offers certain compression options that are advantageous to web and wireless delivery. This full-color book discusses the special techniques required by 24p productions all the way through the production, from preproduction planning through post and output. Each chapter includes techniques, examples, tips, and case studies. The field techniques section features real-world setups presented as demonstrations or as tutorials. Case studies present profiles of people producing 24p projects, and the DVD includes step-by-step instructions that illustrate how to work with 24p material in NLE, compositor, DVD authoring, and audio applications.

This introductory 'crash course' in 24p video production is ideal for the student and new filmmaker.

1 out of 5 stars Title very misleading/Not much care taken to develop book.......2007-03-02

I purchased this book assuming that it would cover 24p, as in the book would be about 24p and the process from camera to screen. I had to spend 90% of my time going through the book and identifying which parts were about 24p and which were rudimentary and simplistic overviews of film making. I was very disappointed when I went through the entire book (skipping a lot of sections because I didn't buy the book to show me all the different 'amazing' kinds of dolly's are out for rent). The book is also RIDDLED with spelling errors and mis-edits such as; meaning to say "The most important thing about shooting on 24p is to make sure you're shooting with a 24p camera" and having it written "The most important thing about make sure you're shooting with a 24p camera". That line is not in the book of course, but it's an example of how, even as an experienced filmmaker I am just confused and have to pause and think about what I just read and what the author Mr. Skidgel was trying to get across.

For the high school or college student who has never made a film before, this book is a good starting point. However, for the author to claim the audience includes "...documentary filmmaker who has purchased a 24p camera and does not know where to begin...creative professionals who... want to take their skills to the next level." I mean, just WOW, what a statement. This book seems like it was written in spare time or over a spring vacation.

The title of the book should have been something closer to "Making Your First Film: Shooting with digital cameras." And with a subheading of "Includes how to use 24p!"

But, if you know little to nothing about film, the book might be worth it, except that in the store the price is near 50$ (insane to ask that much, even despite all the pretty color). The Amazon price is even asking too much.

Before you buy this book, ask yourself why there are SO many people selling their books through amazon as used? This is not a book that someone who has made their share of films or shot plenty of video needs. And it is certainly NOT for a creative professional. If you want to learn about 24p, use the internet, I guarantee you'll find it more helpful.

2 out of 5 stars Should be called "Producing Digital Video".......2006-02-03

I waited and waited to purchase this book because I had recently bought a Canon XL2 and wanted to know how to get that "film look" by shooting in 24p. After several months of delays, the book was finally released and I bought it. When I read through it I realized that this book was not what the title said it was. 95% of this book talks about the basics of film making; use of wide angle and telephoto lenes, continuity, lighting, etc. While helpful in its own right, this is not why I bought the book. There are maybe two chapters that talk about getting the film look for digital video. I probably could have gotten more detailed instruction off of message boards and newsgroups.

If you're looking for a "how to" when it comes to 24p, pass on this book. Save the money and do some investigating on the web. I'm sure you'll find a number of sources that will be able to walk you through the process and you may even get individual instruction.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Info, but not for small markets.......2005-05-04

This is a good book, that covers a lot of info. It also holds up as a book, and not just a how-to. All the info in this book is good info, but it is better suited for large markets. Don't expect to be able to read this book and be able run a business right of the gates, but at the same time this will help get you on the right track. Get this book, it is a good look into how someone got into the business and was able to make it work for a long time.

A great book that gives you the important information you need to run your own production company! I don't know of another title that actually tells you how to get the work that will support your financial needs. After all, you have to have work coming in the door or else...

5 out of 5 stars Great advice for media pros and beginners.......2003-08-25

Even though I have over 16 years experience in the video industry, this book has given me the tools, advice and motivation that I'll need to finally realize my dream of owning my own media creation business.

Not only is the book extremely informative, it has a very readable and enjoyable writing style that made me feel as if the author were speaking directly to me. If you have even the slightest interest in getting involved in digital video production and/or web production, you need this book!

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for any entrepreneur.......2003-07-09

I am an instructor at advanced multimedia classes at a Business School close to Copenhagen, Denmark. I've been around for a while and have been working with 3D, animation, database programing and webdesign and I have also read parts of this book with great excitement and can't wait to finish it. This is a book that has been a demand for on the Danish market for several years...and now it is here. Wonderful. I particularly like the very direct and bold way it describes how the future entrepreneurs should behave on the market in order to survive. Conclusion: the absolute BEST step-by-step book ever written on the topic and a must for anyone going into the media business.

5 out of 5 stars George is inspiring, passionate and practical........2003-07-08

As a reader just finishing the final pages of 'Desktop Video Studio Bible', I must say I totally enjoyed it. This is an excellent guideline to starting and maintaining a business. I'll keep this as a reference for years.

My wife and I have recently started a media production business on the side as presently we both work for a large computer company. I have been in the engineering related field for over 20 years. We got started in this media business at home doing simple home movies and transferring video tape. Slowly the word spread at work and among friends and before too long we saw a nucleus for a potential business. This spring we presented a surprise 40th birthday video produced by our company at a party hosting about 80 people. It was a great success and was a rush and now we are hooked. Maybe this was a peripheral effect of the "Really Big Thing"? Read this book to find out about the "Really Big Thing".

What do you get when you cross the interactive abilities of a computer with the information delivery power of a television? No one is quite sure, but Annesa Hartman attempts to define the field, the process, and the experience of not just viewing but Producing Interactive Television.

Hartman presents a history of the development of television, the rise of the computer as entertainment, and the events taking place that are merging the two. Then she covers the technical process of developing an ITV project--the necessary ingredients, the tools used, the process involved, and the various delivery and execution methods.

Tools and methods change over time, but the information in the last section of the book is timeless and valuable. It is a showcase of real-world ITV projects, including images and interviews with the creators and producers of such projects as SpinTV, Spiderdance, the AFI Enhanced TV Workshop, and Showtime Networks. Not many people are producing ITV projects, but rest assured that everyone is watching the field.

There are certainly some major issues yet to be resolved on both sides of the screen. The formats for an interactive production are far from standard, and the definition itself is still up for grabs. Producing Interactive Television validates and defines this new medium, shedding light on a growing innovation. This book should be read by anyone who sees that the future of entertainment and education lies in the elusive offspring of the television and the computer. --Mike Caputo

    Book Description

The concept of Interactive Television (ITV) is not an easy one to pin down. It has taken many forms, spurned good and not-so good connotations, and has confused the public and experts alike. Producing Interactive Television aims to unravel the confusion by taking an in-depth look into how the merging of digital and Internet Technologies is changing the way people receive, watch and react to TV, and the way TV producers plan and develop productions. For easy understanding and clarity of the topic of ITV and its content development process, the book is divided into three parts. Part One offers the necessary background information on ITV's origins and future. Part Two is a start-to-finish guide to the enhanced TV development process, including hands-on lessons for the prototyping and HTML implementation of ITV interface designs. In Part Three, TV producers and ITV developers share their real-world ITV projects, providing insightful advice on the pitfalls and successes of ITV content creation and the overall industry.

1 out of 5 stars Dangerously Inaccurate, basicly incoherent.......2002-12-30

If you are a working professional in this field, much better is Interactive TV Technology & Markets by H.O. Srivastava. If you are a consumer getting your feet wet, some of the WebTV or AOL TV books are a better bet. However, if you enjoy pre-internet-crash style needless boosterism combined with a complete lack of understanding of the technologies and business models surrounding interactive television, this is probably the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Navigating through a complicated landscape.......2002-04-16

Navigating through the complex landscape of ITV is difficult to do. In an industry that finds it hard to define itself, it's very helpful to get a broad picture that clarifies the basic concepts and issues.
In very clear, user friendly words,Annesa Hartman manages to provide a trail through the ITV world I found easy to follow.

The book provides an historical context that is very helpful for understanding the connection between television, the Internet and ITV. It provides an overall picture of the different industry aspects through easy to understand examples of production, technology, standards and content issues. You can also get a "hands on" experience through the CDROM. All of the above allow you to then choose which aspect of the industry you wish to explore further.
The interviews with industry players provide a valuable "inside" look , which I found particularly helpful and interesting.
Great for anyone who is starting out in this field - producers, content creators, technically non-savvy people and students. ( I have used it for my graduate school work)

4 out of 5 stars Informative and Current.......2002-04-15

The book is an excellent overview of the industry. It provides a historical and developmently approach to the ITV industry. The subject is written with a sense of humor which invites the reader into an arena that may be foreign information. It is well organized with an approach toward learning the subject with points of interest highlighted and a summary at the end of each chapter. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the area of ITV.

    4 out of 5 stars Mind Opening.......2002-04-14

With little background and real interest in this topic, I picked up this book almost by whim and surprisingly found myself quickly growing more intrigued. It's written in an engaging style and provides just enough history for the novice such as myself to see the broader perspectives of this rapidly developing field. It told a "story" but the ending is still unfinished with the author presenting some of the more interesting possibilities. I also really enjoyed many of the "sidebar" interviews of the leading figures in the field. When I started I didn't think I would actually read the whole book but I did. And I glad I did.

    1 out of 5 stars Inaccurate Information - Misleading.......2002-04-03

I purchased this book to gain more knowledge about the Interactive TV industry, and was greatly disappointed. After learning more about interactive television (via other channels) I was appalled by how inaccurately this book portrays the industry. Many key players are excluded across the industry and the information on what materials are necessary are missing key components. This book was a complete waste of money. I do not recommend it to anyone.
