Good but not as good as the handbook.......2007-06-27
I have both the calculations book by Brian McPartland and the NEC Handbook by Brian and his dad Joe. I prefer the handbook more, although you may want both. My problem with this book is that it was not proofed adequately for math errors and typos. I have found at least four computational errors in the examples.
I am not to impressed with this book because it does not take you too far beyond the examples already in the NEC or beyond the obvious. The explainations of why they are computing things the way they are (logic behind the computations) are all explained in the Handbook. Many of the examples are merely duplications of the handbook examples. If you want one good book, buy the Handbook. Don't waste money on the NEC handbooks published by NFPA. They merely waste space by quoting the NEC with some useless comments thrown in. McPartland is the only guy who has ever written a handbook worth having that goes in depth as to why the code is the way it is.

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat Obsolete.......2002-02-08
Many portions of this book (the 2nd edition) are obsolete. This is due to a new TIA cabling standard (568-B) which was ratified right around the time of this book's release in the Spring of 2001. BICSI has since released a 3rd edition in 3-ring-binder format, but McGraw-Hill has not as of yet released the hardcover of the 3rd edition. If you plan on buying this book, either get the 3rd edition through BICSI or wait for McGraw-Hill to publish a hardcopy of the 3rd edition. But before you buy, read on...
Other than the now obsolete portions of this book, it is accurate, but without many exercises or detailed labs in this volume, I'd have to agree with other reviewers here and call it "lacking detail." Perhaps a lab-book is where all the details went. I have also noticed that this book goes so far out of its way to be "vendor-neutral" that it sometimes uses terms that almost nobody in the industry would recognize. This edition also fails to mention some new cabling innovations that have been around since early 2000.
Finally, just one point of interest here; the primary reviewer who has give this book a 5-star rating has a vested interest in the book as well. He is listed in the acknowledgements section of this book, so take those comments with a grain-of-salt.
Obsolete Information.......2001-03-23
This book contains old and soon to be obsolete information. Another reviewer says in his review "Its my understanding that an update is in the works and it can only get better". He is right. According to BICSI, they have written and will soon be selling a new version of this book. But this is the old book! I purchased this book now I find out that a new version is about to be released. I can't believe they are selling old book and passing them off as new material.
Book is dissapointing.......2001-03-23
I was expecting a lot when I purchased this book. I have been in the cable installation industry for over 25 years. I was looking for a book to teach communication cabling installation to new employees and to other individuals thinking of entering the cabling installation industry. The book has two major problems. First, the book provides cabling specifications that are based on old TIA cabling standards. BICSI publishes other manuals that have more up to date information. Therefore, this book contradicts the latest TIA cabling standards and other information that is used by everyone in the cabling industry. Second, most of the book's content is filled with bulleted points organized into lists. I assume that these bulleted point must be important but there is virtually no meaningful expanation of what these bulleted points mean and why they are important. As a result, I read lots of pages but didn't learn any useful information from this book. If you purchase this book and think you will become a cabling expert, you won't!
Awesome Book.......2001-03-17
This book is a 'must have' for persons that are involved in the installation of Telecommunications cabling in comercial buildings. This book is probably the most complete assembling of pertinant information of its kind. I highly recommend this valuable resource.
Great Manual.......2001-03-14
I have reviewed this technical manual from its inception in 1996 to date. This is the second revision and is much more inclusive than the first edition. It is a "must have" for each installer/technician in the industry. Strongly recommend it.
Book Description
The author's second book is a hands-on book on how to install a solar electrical system. It covers, every aspect of a solar installation in great detail, including: electrical theory with emphasis on DC wiring, system design, electrical code, as well as components of a solar system down to quirks, nuts, and bolts. In its humorous language the book also looks at alternative energy politics, policies, and the industry through a critical eye.
Customer Reviews:
Great Solar Guide.......2007-01-06
This book is great. It covers the bases and gives the information one needs. It's a core book for this subject.
Seriously flawed.......2006-09-27
Pieper has a lot of practical knowledge but some things he writes are plain wrong. On page 17 he writes: "The frequency of the sine wave is measured as Hz per second" (should be cycles per second which is Hz). On page 18 he says: "the sine wave [is] 220 volts between two peaks" (should be 311 v; 220 is the RMS voltage). On page 23 he says: "amp hours [are] also refered to as amps per hour or amp/hours" (not true). In page 27 he writes: "At some point, the resistance gets so high that it creates heat inside the conductor" (there is always resistance and heat, the problem is the temperature rises too high). He also is convinced the minerals in petroleum jelly help conductivity on the battery terminals (pp. 123&159) and says "search current" when he means "surge current" (pp. 120&125). Whole pages are such confusing technical nonsense that it is impossible to to give a short account. He self published - he should have had a technically competent person help him with theory and a good how-to book editor help with the practical stuff. I'm sure he is a very competent electrician and there is some good practical information in the book, but it is nowhere near as advertised.
The Easy Guide To Solar Electric Part 2.......2006-05-24
I found this book at the public library in my search for a good guide to solar electric systems. I found a small amount of the information useful but, most was a waste of my time. The writer does not explain ideas in a very coherent manner. He uses a great deal of book space attempting to be funny and expressing his political views. If you are interested in a good solar electric book this is not it. I am still looking.
Finally a solar book I like.......2005-11-27
Reading both of Adi Pieper's books on solar I was pleasantly surprised. Being an analyst in the aviation industry, I come across many very boring and conformistic writings. This book is like a fresh breeze. You cannot describe the alternative form of energy generation without critically viewing the conventional forms available. Readers who do not understand this are sad examples of the energy problem we are presently facing. Compared to several other solar books available this book is inspiring, informative, technically precise (although their are two small mistakes with his math), and has helped me install my own solar system. I also reviewed two other books (refusing to name these, which is a cheap shot under the belt) which are boring and very confusing.
Thinly Disguised Demagoguery.......2005-09-21
By title, this book claims to be a "how to" guide. The first section, however, belies this by explaining that you should leave it to professionals. Having thus disposed of the technical aspects, the author fills the remainder of the product with self-righteous, ultra-greenie, anti-capitalist claptrap, unsupported by fact or even verifiable cites. Not even well written propaganda, and most certainly not useful to anyone wishing to learn anything useful about installing a PV system.

Customer Reviews:
Very informative........2007-01-16
It was very informative and directly relates to my current occupation. A bit vauge in some code discriptions. Shouldn't cost so much. I would purchase again if it were cheaper than $20.
Book Description
One of the newest additions to Delmar's best-selling electrical line, Electrical Installation & Inspection uses comparative examples and step-by-step instructions to teach readers how to design and inspect electrical installations in a manner consistent the 2002 National Electrical Code (NEC®). The book begins with an introduction to basic electricity and proceeds, in logical order, through basic circuits and formulas to an examination of different types of electrical equipment and materials. Articles in the 2002 NEC® provide the framework for studying residential, commercial, and industrial electrical design applications. However, readers are urged to remember that an understanding of, and appreciation for, Code provisions is but a minimum requirement for a safe installation. Beyond "meeting Code," the author stresses the importance of electrical designs that meet end-user needs while also minimizing hazards inherent in the use of electrical energy.
Book Description
Fully updated to reflect the provisions of the 2007 National Fire Alarm Code (NFPA 72) and the 2005 National Electrical Code (NFPA 70, this brand-new edition provides all the information you need to design, install, or maintain fire alarm systems. It has been reorganized to follow the order of topics presented within the NAFC, and includes updated requirements for power supplies, survivability, and spacing of detectors and notification appliances.

Don't waste your money.......2005-02-14
I bought this book hoping to at least learn how to connect wires for an alarm system. I was highly disappointed. Do not waste your money.
totally useless!.......2003-10-04
I thought it`s a good book. But unfortunatly useless. Dont` spend money and time for this book!
Difficult to navigate!.......2002-02-15
Well this is my first EBook and I must say the EBook Reader program interface is horrible. I would much rather read the book with the standard Acrobat reader which has thumbprints and other ways to jump from location to location rather than the limited EBook navigational tools. I am very dissapointed with this purchase.
