Customer Reviews:
Not what I'm looking for. You?.......2004-04-08
First, I'm writing this review because I felt like, after getting a copy from my local library, the other reviews weren't really giving the full picture. This is not a home lab chemistry book so I wonder if the other reviewer even perused a copy. There aren't wacky experiments inside. It's an electronics book.
That said: the writing style of this book is, to put it politely, "conversational". If you like that, fine. If not, be prepared for "whoa!" and "holy cow!" when stepping through the circuits.
Also, the layout/editing is pretty bad. Figures and pictures precede the text. You'll find yourself reading, confused by an adjacent image and then going back to reference a figure mentioned in the next. Ugh!
This book feels like a transcript of an unorganized class. Sometimes more than you need to know, sometimes not enough with plenty of backtracking.
Maybe I'm nit picking but I can't give much confidence to a book whose author uses the word "equal" when the industry standard for an alternative component is "equivalent".
Finally, there are a few too many trips down memory lane for my tastes. Tell me how to set up my lab and what to watch out for, not what it was like in the 50's.
Frankly, the book is a big disappointment for me. It was on my short list because I'm very interested in creating some of my own electronics lab equipment. Luckily I grabbed a copy from the library before shelling out my cash. I recommend you do the same.
Excellent Book for Intermediate and Expert.......2002-04-07
I absolutely loved this book. Clement S. Pepper will appeal to anyone that loves working in their own lab, experimenting with electronic parts or building electronic kits. If you have learned something about electronics, soldering, and assembly work, you will really find the information here useful. The first half of the book contains detailed information on building power supplies, digital panel meters, frequency counters, timers, function generators, battery monitors, etc. The second half contains component descriptions, technical data, and application notes for diodes, transistors, LED's, IC's, etc. That's enough to make this book a useful reference even after you have built your dream lab. I especially like the forward and first chapter of the book. I wish Clement had written this book back when I was a kid! If you are just getting started in electronics, I RECOMMEND YOU BUY THIS BOOK, but you should also purchase some basic electronics theory books and electronic assembly manuals. You will need to know something about circuits, soldering, instrumentation, hand tools etc. to really get the most enjoyment from your new hobby.
very interesting.......2000-08-10
a must for ammatures. a very interesting book, though seemingly simple. ever wanted to be a "mad scientist" but didn't know where to start? this is the book for you, though it may seem abstract fromm the mad scientist bit.

Customer Reviews:
Not all that great.......2007-02-03
I was required to buy this book for a class in college. My instructor worked up a hype for Mr. Meyers' A+ books. To my utter disappointment, this book did not teach me a thing. In fact, I sold this book early in the semester and finished the semester with a different book. If Mr. Meyers really is an A+ guru, then this book is weak to his standards. This book will not pass you on the A+ exam.

Customer Reviews:
Beginners guide to PC repair........2007-08-29
I agree with the previous reviewer, James' style is easy to follow. The book is divided up by simple tasks to harder task as you progress through the book. If you are a noob to the PC repair and upgrade workplace and want a book that will walk you through the normal day to day jobs that makes up "A day in the life of a PC Tech", then this book is right up your alley.
I don't reccomend this for people who have been working in the field and just found themselves wanting or needing the A+ certificate. It would not provide much more than a basic review and your money could be spent better on an exam cram or fast pass guide.
Good luck on the Exam!
For hands-on labs for the A+ exam, get this book!.......2007-08-09
If you need some hands-on practice for the A+ exams, you really ought to invest a little in your career and buy this book. After all, most of us learn by doing... and in my opinion, there are no better hands-on practice scenarios than the labs included in this book. The step-by-step directions for each lab are clear, and Pyles' writing style is interesting and easy to understand. The book is also filled with helpful notes, tips, and warnings, many of which are critical for you to know for the A+ exams.
In short, I highly recommend this book to anyone studying for the A+ certification. Not only will it help you pass the exams, but more importantly, it will also make you a much better tech.

Be Aware!.......2003-05-06
The ISBN NO. below is the LAB MANUAL for the text advertised above. I think it is interesting and worth the time reading it, but it is not the theoretical treatment you may be interested in.
ISBN-0-8273-7038-5
great books.......2002-10-02
this book is helping me to gain the education i need to support my family thank you
the best.......2002-08-31
I am an hvac technician, and this book was more clearly written and logically written than any book in its field that i have read.(and I have read a lot of books}.
It is considered the bible of the hvac industry- highly recommended!
Very good on its purpose.......2002-04-19
This book is surely one of the best available for its purpose, that is, to give an introduction to the refrigeration and air conditioning technology, and also to teach how to install, service, and maintain all the hardware associated with this.
The text is very well writen, in a very clever language. Graphics are very good, and very helpful to the understanding of topics. Sections dedicated to the electrical and electronic sub-systems were a surprise: they are also very clear, and are very helpful even for experienced technicians. There are even sections dedicated to airflow at conditioned spaces, a matter that isn't very well undestood by technicians.
I strongly suggest this book to the people that wants to start working in this technical area, and also to that who already work with it. Very useful to the begginer and to the experienced technician as well.
Be careful.........2001-09-27
Be careful if you're buying this book for college. The sellers usually do not indicate which edition they are selling - and anything older than the 4th edition will be completely useless to to you.
