Book Description
Be it "Pinocchio's Mom," who thinks her child never lies, the "Caped Crusader," who will stop at nothing to have a book eliminated from the curriculum, or the "Helicopter Mom," who hovers and swoops in to protect her child from disappointment, this humorous handbook helps educators deal with impossible parents. Each chapter features a hilarious caricature that illuminates common parent anxieties followed by specific, practical methods for addressing the problem. Easily implemented advice on face-to-face confrontations helps teachers approach each conflict with the confidence to get their point across and the composure to keep their professional principles intact.

I want this author as my supervisor.......2007-09-08
This delightful book has such useful analysis and ideas in it. It is easy reading, and the author's suggestions are easy to take.
Tingley is an educator who became an administrator, and she knows her problem parents. She first gives vignettes with the teacher saying what we would REALLY like to say. Then she rewinds the interaction, showing us much more effective things to say.
I appreciate Tingley's compassion for both us teachers and the parents. School has just started again this fall, and I am off to a MUCH better start with a girl in my home room whose "hovering" mom was ready to slug me last year.
Very helpful.......2007-09-03
I found this book to be a really humorous way to help guide interactions with parents on a daily basis. I will absolutely be using advice from this book to help me with conferences this school year.
Parent-Teacher Association as it really is.......2007-07-10
Tingley gives an excellent overview of how educational objectives have evolved from instilling self-esteem to achieving high scores on standardized tests and what a problem that has created in dealing with today's parents. She acknowledges the frustrations teachers feel and frequently complain about, then skillfully uses humor along with sound advice to get beyond the griping and deal with the problems unreasonable parents can present. The book would be very helpful as a basis for role playing sessions for teachers-in-training in order to master the skills of being in control, getting parents on their side and most importantly, handling themselves as professionals. Even veteran teachers could benefit from reflecting on the amusing, yet accurate parent stereotypes Tingley has captured through her years of experience.
This is a great book for new teachers............2007-06-01
I bought this book for my daughter who is in her first year of teaching. When it arrived, I took a peek at the text, and probably read 1/2 the book before I even gave it too her! It is very easy, informative, reading. The former teacher who authored the book, has succinctly catergorized "parent types" and how each can be handled by the teacher when necessary. This survival guide's advice is excellent, and the points it makes are easily remembered by the reader. I think this will save my daughter lots of trial and error in her new career....(she really could have used it this year, with 29 students, and 58 parents to contend with!)
Illuminating for both new teachers and veterans, alike.......2007-06-01
As a veteran teacher-librarian, I can say that I have probably met most of the types of parents that Suzanne Tingley highlights in her book. As a parent, I can say that I may have had tendencies toward a few of the actions described. What is remarkable about this book is the down to earth advice for teachers, young and old, in how to diffuse and handle situations that will most definitely occur in the school setting at one time or another. The different scenarios illustrated by the presence of Caped Crusaders, Helicopter Moms, or Uncivil Libertarians are ones in which we have all had a part. Mrs. Tingley has clearly thought about how differently those scenarios could be played out so that a teacher can maintain his or her principles while allowing the parent to retain his or her dignity as the problem is resolved. She does this with humor, but also with a great deal of insight and intelligence. In order for schools to be effective in educating students, teachers and parents must communicate reasonably and civily with each other. This book opens the door to such communication. I am glad the book was recommended to me and I recommend it to all teachers who seek well-reasoned advice or reinforcement in validating responses to difficult situations and parents.

Thank you.......2007-10-03
I am really enjoying the book. I have 14 students ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade. All I can say is thank you so much for such an informative book.
Homeschooler input---.......2007-09-01
It wasn't quite what we were looking for as homeschoolers. All of the pictures are in black and white and many of them are too dark to even see. I felt that some of the directions were a bit unclear. It does not say specifically what grade level each project is, but that the projects get progressivly more difficult. It does give you adaption ideas for younger students on many things. If your looking for fun, neat crafts to make in school, this probably isn't the book for you. This book does cover good topics such as basic line drawing, value, texture, etc. I feel it is a good book to have in conjuction with other art books.
Images very difficult to see.......2007-07-11
I am sorry to say that I had to return this book--though I was really looking forward to getting it. Though the lessons look like they have had a lot of thought put into them,(the author did well) it is fairly text heavy and I'll admit I prefer a layout with more images to a wall of text. Also, in my opinion, the printing quality is poor. I could not make out some of the images in the book I received -- because most were dark and smudgy! For a book about the visual arts, this is most unfortunate. At the very least, a new print run lightening up the images (see page 142, for example) would improve it.
Must Have For Art Teachers.......2007-02-07
This book is a great tool for getting ideas on lessons to teach when your mind has drawn a blank. Lessons are compiled in different sections such as elements based, principles based, 2D, 3D, etc.
For a part time teachers tech, this is a life saver!.......2007-01-11
I am teaching my second year of art at a local elementary school, where they hire non-certified technicians to teach during the teachers prep time. I bought this book over the summer, and I have loved it so much for what I do.
Many of the simple lessons we do contain important state core requirements, and it is a matter of the proper vocabulary and presentation to the students. This book helps you keep what you are teaching in order, from art history, to criticism and comparison, and even hands on projects or still life sketching..... this book has hundreds of lesson ideas, and I have found them easy to adapt to all age levels. ( I work with 1-5th grades)
One note- I had read in a description that the book contained colored pictures, which is not the case, therefore the art presented in the book is not really a possibility to use in class unless you can get a reproduction somewhere else- which I am limited to do. But I love the age appropriate guide in the beginning, and refer to it often.
I went to a district meeting and had many other techs asking about my resources, and I was happy to refer this book to them. Whether for school, home school, or just personal art education this is book that is well rounded and well stocked. More lesson ideas then you will ever be able to use, and for us with a limited budget, it is still full of tried and true lesson plans and discussion starters.

Teacher's Survival Resource.......2007-09-19
Several things that I wanted to know before I purchased the product were to get a glimspe of the table of contents, a peek of any page, description or phrase that its a recommeded book for teachers with teaching experience of 1-4 years or so.
Way too basic. Nothing you can't create yourself.......2007-01-04
I was very disappointed with this book. I was looking for ready-to-use materials for my 9th grade English (inclusive) classroom, but the materials were all things I could either download easily from the internet or quickly create in Word. Most of the ideas are things you'll find readily in any teacher's edition set of texts.
Too generic.
Great choice.......2005-11-01
I recommend this book for all first-year English teachers. It is full of important information that I plan to review annually.
Great for Brand New English Teachers.......2004-09-29
I had imagined that there would be more reproducibles in this book. That was my only disappointment. It's more of a how-to guide to the many aspects of teaching English.
A toy box for teachers.......2001-05-29
This book outlines teacher-tested ideas for teaching reading and writing. I have used many of them in my classroom, and they really work. Used in conjunction with Brandvik's other book--Writing Process Activity Book--this book is a gold mine.

Very helpful!.......2007-08-26
I just bought this book and I couldn't put it down. Feldman's book is very helpful for someone who works in a kindergarten. The book is detailed, organized, well-structured. I recommend this book to all future preschool teachers!
My Stress Is Gone!!!.......2006-06-05
I am about to start teaching in a few weeks and this book is a LIFESAVER!! It gives me endless pointers on being a great preschool teacher. Since I graduated from college two years I needed a bit of a refresher course to prepare me and this book was the ticket. I will definitely refer to it many, many times during my course of teaching while using these methods and passing them on to my fellow teachers.
Great resource.......2005-08-09
I found this book to be a wonderful guide for my first year of teaching pre-K. The book is well organized into very pertinent, practical chapters full of great, easy-to-do ideas and strategies for addressing the needs of young students. I shared this book with a vetran teacher who was equally impressed with the content. It is a great value and a quick, enjoyable, informative read.
A Great Book For Writing Your Long Range Plan.......2004-09-05
Even though the book does not present a particularly aesthetically pleasing appearance, this book spills over with ideas that I never thought about(like the "Letter Puppets"). Parts of my long range plan sprang directly from this book. Dr. Feldman continues to inspire my teaching.
Wonderful resource!.......2000-11-01
This is a wonderful, comprehensive guide to working with young children. All aspects of a successful, pre-school or kindergarten program are covered in this book. This is a must-have resource for beginning early childhood teachers.

Great read the summer before teaching your first year.......2007-01-17
This book is full of useful tools and advice. As a 10 year veteran of teaching in secondary schools, and a beginning administrator, I purchased this as a resource for new teachers. The author actually taught in the school I now work in. I did not meet her but have heard wonderful things about her classroom. I certainly am enjoying the book thus far.
More of the same. . . ........2006-12-07
I found this very large book to be a waste of time & money. It's full of the same stuff we hear at all the workshops & education classes, which,in my experience, isn't really very helpful. There are a lot of forms & the book covers a lot of different areas, but doesn't have a lot about what I think is most important in managing a classroom: guidelines to real human interaction. Some may be looking for a bunch of formulas or rules: "if the students do this, you do this," but I have never seen that work very well. It usually takes far too much time, too. Also, the book seems to focus on the "teacher as entertainer" model: "make the class interesting, & there will be no problems." I have seen that work--for a few days--but I have never seen anyone keep it up successfully for 6-7 class periods a day for several weeks. A much better book, in my opinion, is The Reluctant Disciplinarian (I don't have the author's name handy). It doesn't offer any forms & rules, but it's fun to read & left me with a desire to get back in the classroom & enjoy my days with the kids.
Great book, extremely helpful if you want to go into teaching.......2006-03-10
This book was great and it arrived extremely promptly. This book is great for future educators in public schools.
Perfect Book.......2005-09-20
I love this book. There are a lot of different worksheets that can be used within the classroom. It provides several beginning of the year activities and also quite a few on going activities to be used throughout the year.
A twenty two year veteran of public education.......2005-09-13
This book contains some of the best techniques I have ever used for discipline in the classroom-and I have seen alot of techniques. This guide represents the most comprehensive set of tools that are ready to use and emphasize the importance of professionalism in the classroom. By reminding the educator that respect begins with modeling good behavior, this book can help even the most jaded of educational professionals.
I have found this book to be an invaluable tool in the classroom
Book Description
You're reading as fast as you can, but the pile of unread essays grows taller and taller. Guilt mounts. Students want to know when their papers will come back. Grading begins consuming all your energy, your weekends, your life.
Grading papers is a fact of life, especially in English classrooms, and the paper load is a leading cause of teacher burnout. Fortunately, Carl Jago's here to help, and in Papers, Papers, Papers, she offers you advice honed from thirty-one years in the English classroom and forty-five thousand papers worth of grading. You'll not only get through stacks of papers, but you'll do so accurately, completely, and with the time you need to give each and every student in your classes the attention they deserve.
Ever practical and always professional, Jago suggests techniques that can be implemented right away to turn your mountain of essays into a foothill. She covers every aspect of attentive grading, including:
- responding to student drafts
- commenting rather than correcting
- using scoring guides and rubrics for common expectations
- fostering improvement from one paper to the next
- effective peer- and self-editing
- suggestions for alternatives to essays.
With all this and her Ten Tips for Handling the Paper Load, Carol Jago gives you everything you need to keep on top of student papers.

Journeyman English Teacher.......2006-07-22
As a relatively new teacher of English, I was a bit worried about the paper load I will face when I begin my new position as an AP Comp teacher. Jago writes a very accessible book with lots of really PRACTICAL suggestions. It is a very fast read, and, with the exception of the 'paper-grading' parties she suggest to alleviate the "is'it just me" syndrome, (if we all got together as friends to grade papers - no grading would ever get done!) her ideas are realistic - and better yet, they offer reasonable short-cuts to the teacher without ever compromising the evaluation for the student. Everybody wins!
Book Description
High school theatre programs are vigorous and growing, but many theatre teachers - drawn from English, speech, or other departments - lack degrees in theatre. For them, as well as for the seasoned teaching veteran, Raina Ames provides an indispensable companion.
The High School Theatre Teacher's Survival Guide is a handy reference for high school theatre teachers covering both curricular and extracurricular problems - everything from how to craft a syllabus for a theatre class to what to say to parents about a student's participation in a school play. In ten concise chapters, Raina Ames lays out a range of issues and situations, and offers practical suggestions for handling them professionally and humanely.
The Guide covers both specific questions about structuring classes, the text of overheads or PowerPoint for classroom instruction, and useful suggestions - such as a 'contract' between student and the theatre program -- for building students' confidence and sense of responsibility within the group effort.
With an eye both on the classroom and the rehearsal room, The High School Theatre Teacher's Survival Guide will be a welcome aid to high school teachers wherever theatre is taught.
Customer Reviews:
Good Information, But ...........2005-12-28
I found this book extremely preachy - and if I as a theatre student thought so, a seasoned theatre teacher definitely will. It could use some more chapters on curriculum and lessons, she skims but doesn't give the instruction a novice needs.

It's a 'must' for any library which caters to actors or drama teachers........2007-07-07
Both experienced and beginning drama directors have easy, experience-backed tips on directing from THE DRAMA TEACHER'S SURVIVAL GUIDE: A COMPLETE TOOL KIT FOR THEATRE ARTS. When this book says 'complete' it means it: collections strong in drama will appreciate the range of tips from instructions on organizing tryouts - complete with tryout sheets - to blocking out rehearsals, technical aspects of scene set-up, tips on locating costumes, and more. It's a 'must' for any library which caters to actors or drama teachers.
Wonderful tool for anyone involved in theater.......2007-04-30
This handy guide covers literally every aspect of putting on a production, and not only does it apply to high school theater, it is extremely helpful for any level of theater, from elementary, to high school, to amature, to community, to professional.
Margaret Johnson covers basics from selecting shows, to securing the theater, to casting and auditions to opening night.
The best part is that this book doesn't read like stereo instructions, there are personal touches from the author through out including her memories and stories of different shows she has worked on.
This book also includes audition sheets and other pages you can photo copy to pass out and have actors fill out.
Literally every question you could possibly have involving your theatrical production, this book covers it. Nothing will remain unanswered.
Also, it's important to note that I'm not a high school drama teacher, but I am a long-time theatrical passionate and I have been using this book as a holy grail while directing my first show.
Please email me if you have any questions.

Customer Reviews:
This book was horrible, even for first year teachers.......2007-08-06
I will be a first year Bio teacher this fall and so I went ahead and bought this book. In addition to the poor layout, the first 160 pages were useless. The only good thing about it was the sponge activities in the back of the book but even then I would probably only use them when we have a sub or as a "fun activity" to fill time. Going back to the layout, the author would put page after page of forms or examples in the MIDDLE of explaining what was going on. For example, you would start to read about a technique, or whatever, and then its 5 pages of example forms some related to what you just read, others related to something else, and then it would go back to discussing the technique.
Everything else in the book was common sense and taught in my graduate teaching courses (and my grad classes taught it much better).
I wouldn't suggest this book to anyone.
Biology Teacher's Survival Guide.......2006-07-10
lots of great ideas that should help me in my first classroom - THANKS!
Book is half usefull.......2006-06-06
I think this book is a great resource to make copies and transparencies of sponge activities or bell works but the rest of the book I did not find useful. It included some of the same things you are already introduced to as a new teacher in an induction program. But if you're looking for a good amount of sponge activities than this is a pretty good book.
Biology Teacher's Survival Guide.......2005-08-10
I am a new Biology teacher and will have Biology I, Bio I Honors, and Biology II Advanced Placement classes. This book had a lot of good ideas on activities to do and procedures to use in the classroom. I think that it will be a help to me this year.
Excellent reproducible items.......2003-08-26
I found this to be a very useful tool for teaching Biology. There are many puzzles and activities covering different Biology units, including genetics, physiology, and cell biology. Students enjoy the variety and the puzzles go along with most typical high school Biology textbooks.
