Book Description

On average, a physician will interrupt a patient describing her symptoms within eighteen seconds. In that short time, many doctors decide on the likely diagnosis and best treatment. Often, decisions made this way are correct, but at crucial moments they can also be wrong -- with catastrophic consequences. In this myth-shattering book, Jerome Groopman pinpoints the forces and thought processes behind the decisions doctors make. Groopman explores why doctors err and shows when and how they can -- with our help -- avoid snap judgments, embrace uncertainty, communicate effectively, and deploy other skills that can profoundly impact our health. This book is the first to describe in detail the warning signs of erroneous medical thinking and reveal how new technologies may actually hinder accurate diagnoses. How Doctors Think offers direct, intelligent questions patients can ask their doctors to help them get back on track.

Groopman draws on a wealth of research, extensive interviews with some of the country's best doctors, and his own experiences as a doctor and as a patient. He has learned many of the lessons in this book the hard way, from his own mistakes and from errors his doctors made in treating his own debilitating medical problems.

How Doctors Think reveals a profound new view of twenty-first-century medical practice, giving doctors and patients the vital information they need to make better judgments together.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great insight into the machinations of medicine.......2007-10-18

I suffer from a rare chronic illness and went through nearly half a decade of frustrated and sometimes hostile doctors before finally receiving a definitive diagnosis. Reading this book gave me great insight into why many of my doctors were so frustrated with the fact that I had obvious symptoms, obviously skewed bloodwork, but no obvious cause. It is disheartening to realize how rampant sexism is in the medical profession, even when it comes to viewing patients, but this book gives some valuable lessons in how to navigate the theoretical medical minefield.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, though slighly misnamed.......2007-10-18

For most of this book, a more appropriate though slightly more sensationalistic title would be, "How Doctors and Hospitals Make Mistakes". The author in a large section of chapters interviews various generalists and specialists, as well as drawing from his own experience as a patient, and largely focuses on how things are under or overdiagnosed (up to fifteen percent of the time in some cases, performed by superbly trained individuals). The author is sober in his judgement, and does a good job being neither overly condemning American medicine or being too defensive. There are small sections on other factors as well, such as the influence of money on medicine , well covered in other books, or patient-doctor relationship communication, but the main thrust is the concept of misdiagnosis, which is well worth the time and energy reading.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to be, go to, or are a doctor...read this.......2007-10-16

It was simply very interesting to read how a doctor navigated their own medical problems. To learn how many different opinions there were, and how someone who could actually weigh those differing opinions, considered their options.

Which presents the problem: how do we laymen weigh those differing opinions. Dr. Groopman presents solutions to that question, all the while giving you a fuller perspective on what the title promises.

There is also careful criticism of how medicine is conducted which is important for everyone involved in medicine to ponder.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this.......2007-10-16

This is a good book that everyone should read. It will help them see how their doctors think and help identify potential flaws, which would lead to more effective disease treatment.

5 out of 5 stars A great look into the real world of medical care........2007-10-07

As an incoming first year medical student, I wanted to read a doctor's take on the behind-the-scenes work of medicine. What I got was an eye-opening and honest look at doctors, not as white-coated diagnosing machines, but as human beings with faults who are just trying to do their best. It is an excellent book both for those in medicine or who are going into medicine, as well as for laypeople who just want to get a better idea of where their doctor is coming from the next time they have an appointment.

Current medicine is one of the best medicine books to keep on your self. It has all the info you need plus those little tid bits that make good test questions. I used it to study for my borads and swear they used this book for the questions. Otherwise its a great reference too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-09-20

I'm a PA-C and and have used hundreds of books. I LOVE THIS BOOK! It is very complete and easy to use without being overwelming like Harrison's. It is an absolute must for any mid-level provider.
Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment is Awesome. There is also a Current Surgery and Current Emergency Medicine that both SUCK.

5 out of 5 stars Concise, complete, no frills, need to know information.......2007-09-14

I am a physician, now retired, and have used, and use, this book for years. I get a new update every two years. IMHO it gives a great review and complete synopsis of many many medical problems. It is paperback. There are no photos, nor graphics. It is well written and well organized. The layout on the pages (using blue titles) makes it easy to read and follow. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for daily clinical practice.......2007-08-13

This book is one of the best state-of-the-art clinical knowledge sources. It shows an accurate and concise compilation of most common pathologies, enhancing best diagnosis elements and points of treatment. Essential for daily clinical practice.

5 out of 5 stars Relevant Medical Information.......2007-07-25

It has all the relevant topics you need for a general practice of medicine. It touches on pathophysiology just enough to get you up to speed. There is often little extra clinical advice that is very useful and that I do not encounter in other textbooks. Each chapter also gives you treatment options.

5 out of 5 stars 2007 Physician's Desk Reference (PDR) Review.......2007-06-08

I purchased the 2007 Physician's Desk Reference (PDR) as a Mother's Day 2007 gift for my Mom. My Mom is a nurse, and she has been a nurse for almost 55 years now. She is 71. Mom had not had an updated PDR in close to 10 years, so I got her a new one.

This book is absolutely essential if you want to keep up with the newest in medicines, diseases, cures, and much more! It is the same book you see on your physicians desk and the same one I have saw my physician flip through when he needs to look something up!
Don't miss your opportunity to own a copy because you will not be sorry!
P.S. Ideal for nurses, CNA'S, physicians assistants, and others in the medical field that wants to be updated regularly.

3 out of 5 stars Know What You Buy.......2007-02-13

The PDR is commonly thought to be a complete drug reference. While the strength of the PDR is that it includes complete FDA approved prescribing information for the drugs inside, the weakness is that the drugs it includes is not comprehensive. The publisher depends on drug manufacturers to provide the information that is included in each edition. For this reason, new drugs almost always are included; however, older drugs that are beyond their patent life may not be included.

Further, the PDR only includes FDA approved information. As any Physician, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner or Pharmacist knows, off label drug use is common. If a medical professional is looking for a printed drug reference that is truly comprehensive, look for Drug Facts and Comparisons or AHFS Drug Information. If one is looking for a handbook, consider Lexi-Comp Drug Information, AHFS Essentials, or Drug Facts and Comparisons Pocket Edition.

Book Description

Tracy Kidder is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the author of the bestsellers The Soul of a New Machine, House, Among Schoolchildren, and Home Town. He has been described by the Baltimore Sun as the “master of the non-fiction narrative.” This powerful and inspiring new book shows how one person can make a difference, as Kidder tells the true story of a gifted man who is in love with the world and has set out to do all he can to cure it.

At the center of Mountains Beyond Mountains stands Paul Farmer. Doctor, Harvard professor, renowned infectious-disease specialist, anthropologist, the recipient of a MacArthur “genius” grant, world-class Robin Hood, Farmer was brought up in a bus and on a boat, and in medical school found his life’s calling: to diagnose and cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. This magnificent book shows how radical change can be fostered in situations that seem insurmountable, and it also shows how a meaningful life can be created, as Farmer—brilliant, charismatic, charming, both a leader in international health and a doctor who finds time to make house calls in Boston and the mountains of Haiti—blasts through convention to get results.

Mountains Beyond Mountains takes us from Harvard to Haiti, Peru, Cuba, and Russia as Farmer changes minds and practices through his dedication to the philosophy that "the only real nation is humanity" - a philosophy that is embodied in the small public charity he founded, Partners In Health. He enlists the help of the Gates Foundation, George Soros, the U.N.’s World Health Organization, and others in his quest to cure the world. At the heart of this book is the example of a life based on hope, and on an understanding of the truth of the Haitian proverb “Beyond mountains there are mountains”: as you solve one problem, another problem presents itself, and so you go on and try to solve that one too.

Mountains Beyond Mountains unfolds with the force of a gathering revelation,” says Annie Dillard, and Jonathan Harr says, “[Farmer] wants to change the world. Certainly this luminous and powerful book will change the way you see it.”

5 out of 5 stars This is one amazing guy.......2007-10-09

I actually listened to this as a book on tape, but bought the book version as a present. In fact, it was recommended to me by another friend. I found it well written and the subject very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Man.......2007-10-04

This book is inspiring but troubling as well. I am a nurse and find his ideas of medicine/poverty to be right on target. Fighting the system is what is hard, he manages to do so at least in his areas of clinical work. His take on poverty and the world economic systems while not new, is seen through the eyes of a scientist and an anthropoligist which gives it a slightly new twist. For anyone interested in a larger world view I would recommend this book. Dr. Farmer is a unique man and his efforts, where ever he is, to change the world's systems is a challenge to us all.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-09-25

Although I had to read this book for a mandatory assignment, it was not a labored read. The author writes in a way that allows the reader to continue reading easily and endlessly until the book is finished, or stop whenever the reader needs a break. The story is eye-opening and enlightening while arousing feelings of anger towards the governments overseas conduct with "democracy" and aiding big business. The tale is capturing and the read is light. The only reason it wasn't a five star is because I wasn't very fond of the assignment.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-09-15

Kidder's biographical account of the life and work of Dr. Paul Farmer is moving and munumental and reads like a novel---a compliment from me. The determination of one man supported by competent and trusted colleagues is an awesome monument to the power of the human spirit. Also opens American minds and hearts to the povery lying just off our borders in Haiti. Kidder's narrative is superbly told and presented most effectively with a plot line that moves in and out between past and present. Compact, concise and compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2007-09-05

It's wonderful that one man can turn his passion into something that benefits so many!

Hands down the best resource for physiology. Respiratory and Acid-Base chapters were a bit weak, but overall, the book was excellent.

5 out of 5 stars The gold standard for physiology on Step 1.......2007-07-27

Great to use during 1st and 2nd year in supplement to your medschool classes. My boards will be this summer, but this book is widely regarded as the gold standard for physiology preparation for the USMLE/COMLEX step 1..This book is also a condensed version of the bigger physiology boook by costanzo (same author) so if you dont understand anything in the BRS, you should refer to the bigger Costanzo book. I highly recommend at least the BRS for boards.

Book Description

A brilliant young transplant surgeon brings moral intensity and narrative drama to the most powerful and vexing questions of medicine and the human condition.

When Pauline Chen began medical school twenty years ago, she dreamed of saving lives. What she did not count on was how much death would be a part of her work. Almost immediately, Chen found herself wrestling with medicine’s most profound paradox, that a profession premised on caring for the ill also systematically depersonalizes dying. Final Exam follows Chen over the course of her education, training, and practice as she grapples at strikingly close range with the problem of mortality, and struggles to reconcile the lessons of her training with her innate knowledge of shared humanity, and to separate her ideas about healing from her fierce desire to cure.

From her first dissection of a cadaver in gross anatomy to the moment she first puts a scalpel to a living person; from the first time she witnesses someone flatlining in the emergency room to the first time she pronounces a patient dead, Chen is struck by her own mortal fears: there was a dying friend she could not call; a young patient’s tortured death she could not forget; even the sense of shared kinship with a corpse she could not cast aside when asked to saw its pelvis in two. Gradually, as she confronts the ways in which her fears have incapacitated her, she begins to reject what she has been taught about suppressing her feelings for her patients, and she begins to carve out a new role for herself as a physician and as human being. Chen’s transfixing and beautiful rumination on how doctors negotiate the ineluctable fact of death becomes, in the end, a brilliant questioning of how we should live.

Moving and provocative, motored equally by clinical expertise and extraordinary personal grace, this is a piercing and compassionate journey into the heart of a world that is hidden and yet touches all of our lives. A superb addition to the best medical literature of our time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Surgeons are human too... crystal clear honesty from an accomplished professional.......2007-08-27

This book had much value for me personally. I'm not a doctor or a pre-med student. I picked this book up by chance on the "new book" shelf at our local library. We had a son who was born with a severe, rare chromosomal syndrome. He stood no chance of survival yet sincere, overly zealous surgical professionals endeavored to schedule surgery without discussion or consultation from we parents even as he struggled to stay alive on life support. My son had absolutely no prospects of surviving infancy, much less a life free of tortuous pain. What hurt the most was how we, the parents, had to stand up for our rights to allow our son the dignified and welcome relief that could come only through death. It was clear to us, as it is clear to Dr. Chen in her book, that the highly trained and zealous surgical professionals lacked the sensitivity to fully appreciate or consider the moral aspects and shamelessness of dying peacefully with dignity.

This book has moving first person accounts of what ridiculous decisions are being made when death is unavoidable and stands there to relieve those whose continued suffering is senseless. I was particularly moved by the account of the "full court press" given to a dying cancer patient who triggered the "code blue". We owe much to Dr. Chen for making public this and other events that fully expose the deficiencies in the medical community's approach to care of the terminally ill.

Dr. Chen's emotional honesty in this very personalized narrative is a great tribute to those of her profession who have struggled at being competent professionals while retaining the qualities of moral and compassionate human beings.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable book by a remarkable woman.......2007-08-25

This is a deeply engaging and moving book. To become an accomplished transplant surgeon demands many gifts, including high intelligence, perseverance, physical skill, focus. What is not required, and what Dr. Chen displays in full measure herein, is the ability to examine one's actions and feelings with the kind of introspection and depth demonstrated in "Final Exam". One also does not necessarily expect a fine surgeon to be a fine writer. Dr. Chen is a very fine writer.

Anyone interested in the psychological and philosophical issues surounding modern medicine should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating--Exquisitely Written--Full of Heartfelt Honesty.......2007-07-07

"Final Exam: A Surgeon's Reflections on Mortality" by Pauline W. Chen is outstanding on many levels. Its purpose is to reveal what is wrong with the medical profession's attitude toward the treatment of terminally ill and dying patients. But don't expect an academic discussion; Chen makes this issue very personal. The book is a recounting of the many experiences in her own medical career--from medical student to transplant surgeon--that shaped and later changed her attitude toward care of patients at the end of life.

I had no particular reason to read this book--I am not a doctor, the parent of a doctor, or involved in any way with the medical profession. I just saw this book on the New Books shelf in my local library and checked it out. What is amazing is that I could not put this book down--I know that sounds so trite, but it's true. What grabbed me first was the wholly unexpected openness and honesty of the author. What grabbed me next was the beautiful clear prose. Here was a brilliant woman doctor telling me all about the many experiences in her medical career that shaped her current convictions about medical care at the end of life. But she was not just telling me about these medical experiences, she was turning herself inside out to reveal how she actually FELT about each experience. How many doctors have you ever heard talk to you about their feelings? This author brought me close to her heart--I felt like a sister or a dear friend.

I came away from this book with a far greater respect for physicians; especially all they have to deal with, physically and mentally, throughout their long years of training and practice. I also come away with a far greater appreciation for the human frailty of physicians, particularly when dealing with-end of-life issues. This is a profession that has to deal with far more than a normally allotted human share of agony, grief, and soul-searching.

3 out of 5 stars Now what?.......2007-06-04

As an undergraduate humanities teacher, I have often observed how unimaginative pre-med students can be (as well as very bright, of course). So this sensitively written, introspective memoir is a surprise and delight. I am, as an older person now, also happy to see medical activism admitting its ultimate helplessness in the face of human mortality. After all doctors eventually lose every one of their patients, don't they? On the other hand, what has Pauline to offer us in the face of the ultimate modern terror except a tear and some time? I understand that is the best we often have these days, but it's not much. As a medievalist, I live much of my life in a world where this fragile life and this frail body are passing things to be happily cast off of as a precondition to an eternal life free of the suffering that Chen sets before us so poignantly.
I am not suggesting that the beliefs of the medieval world were correct but that our ancestors had a rich tradition of ideas, feelings and rituals with which to face this ultimate challenge to life as we know it. If the price of the modern world's enormous skill in prolonging life was dependent on overthrowing the beliefs of traditional Western culture, what have we gained but a few more years and the terror of slipping alone into eternal darkness? I hope Pauline weeps for that as well someday; if she can write another book afterwards, it may well be a masterpiece.

3 out of 5 stars How a surgeon deals with death.......2007-05-30

As shocking and gory as the medical world is portrayed on television, it seldom comes close to reality, a lesson that Pauline W. Chen regurgitates in FINAL EXAM as she describes her academic (and continuing) education in the most difficult of all lessons: dealing with death.

I'm no psychologist, but sometimes I wonder if doctors go into the profession because of a God complex, where they wield such awesome power; patients defer to their wisdom and put their fates completely into their hands. Then comes the inevitable day when the physician loses her first patient, whether due to something she did or didn't do, or because nature has taken its course. It must be quite a blow to the ego.

Then the transformation occurs.

The doctor can go one of two ways. She can either steel herself against death or learn from it and become a more compassionate caregiver.

Chen, who attended Harvard University and the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, paints a compelling picture, but one that is not for the squeamish. She discusses her first interaction with a corpse as she and her fellow med students learned anatomy through dissection. The respect and "relationship" that developed is touching, as Chen realizes this former life force had a history, a family, hopes and dreams, just as she does.

Over the course of her studies and through her residency, Chen learns that her work is not parceled out as neatly as television shows such as "ER" and "Grey's Anatomy." The victims do not lie in bed neatly as doctors and nurses struggle to keep them alive. They slide around, bleed, moan and cry out.

There is no part of Chen's story that isn't saturated with sadness, even as she is learning. Every new character is destined to die. How will Chen respond? Will she reach out to the dying man and his family? Will she try to hide until the end has come and avoid it all?

For all the emotion, Chen does not come down on one side or the other on the technology that is available to keep the patient going. Indeed, most of the people she discusses have decided to go out on their own terms.

What must one feel upon being given that death sentence? How does a doctor ever get used to passing down that sentence, when nothing else can be done? "[T]he words emerge," Chen writes in a chapter titled "Sorry to inform you" "so softly that I see everyone leaning in as I speak. 'I wonder,' I hear myself saying to these people, 'if you have thought of what you want at the end of life?'"

Taking a very cynical stance, as lofty as the author's intentions are, FINAL EXAM reminds me of a line from "I'm a Loser": "Is it for her or myself that I cry?"

Book Description

Donna Leon’s charming, evocative, and addictive Commissario Guido Brunetti series continues with Suffer the Little Children. When Commissario Brunetti is summoned in the middle of the night to the hospital bed of a senior pediatrician, he is confronted with more questions than answers. Three men -- a young Carabiniere captain and two privates from out of town -- have burst into the doctor's apartment in the middle of the night, attacked him and taken away his eighteenth-month old baby boy. What could have motivated an assault by the forces of the state so violent it has left the doctor mute? Who would have authorized such an alarming operation? At the same time, Brunetti’s colleague Inspector Vianello discovers a money-making scam between pharmacists and doctors in the city. But it appears as if one of the pharmacists is after more than money. Donna Leon's new novel is as subtle and fascinating as ever, set in a beautifully-realized Venice, a glorious city seething with small-town vice.

1 out of 5 stars No Meat in this Meal.......2007-10-16

I came away from this book dissapointed. There was no bulk, just wordiness; there was no interchange with Guido's family, no run ins with his boss, no stops for espresso and grappa along the canal, all the things I look for with delight. This book needed serious editing.

Perhaps with her next book, Leon can get back to the meat of the matter.

3 out of 5 stars Not good enough.......2007-10-11

I like Donna Leon's books and have read all of them...but I won't be reading her again. She likes to slip in little derogatory comments about US citizens, that don't have anything to do with the story line. I won't be spending any more US dollars on her books.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2007-09-19

I have read all of Leon's Brunetti mysteries and this was the first time I was really disappointed. The story lacks focus and feels completely frazzled. There are too many things going on that never seem to get resolved. The writing style she uses for the interrogations at the beginning and end seems silly and doesn't make sense. I never felt a shred of sympathy for any of the characters, despite the horrible things that happen to them. I sure hope that she can find her old, captivating writing style again or I will have to just go back to re-reading her earlier novels.

4 out of 5 stars Better than her last two books.......2007-09-08

Donna Leon is incredibly skilled at evoking the spirit of Venice, and Brunetti is such a marvelous character. Although not up to the standards of her earlier novels, this one is a vast inprovement over the previous two, which were little more than screeds on environmental issues. If you've never read any of her books, go for the early works; if you're a fan of Leon and have been disappointed by her more recent efforts, this is definitely a step up.

2 out of 5 stars Suffer the little children...........2007-08-13

This book had an entirely different flavor than the other Commissario Guido Brunetti mysteries, all of which I have read, some of them more than once. It was less amusing, harder and more depressing than the others and the ending was terrible. If her writing is going in this direction, I won't read any more.

Book Description

A riveting memoir from the Navy doctor praised as "Hero, M.D." on the cover of Newsweek.

Cdr. Richard Jadick's story is one of the most extraordinary to come out of the war in Iraq. At thirty-eight, the last place the Navy doctor was expected to be was on the front lines. He was too old to be called up, but not too old to volunteer. In November 2004, with the military reeling from an acute doctor shortage, Jadick chose to accompany the First Battalion, Eighth Marine Regiment (the "1/8") to Iraq. During the Battle of Fallujah, Jadick and his team worked tirelessly and courageously around the clock to save their troops in the worst street fighting Americans had faced since Vietnam. It is estimated that without Jadick at the front, the Marines would have lost an additional thirty men. Of the hundreds of men he treated, only one died after reaching a hospital. This is the inspiring story of his decision to enter into the fray, a fascinating glimpse into wartime triage, and a compelling account of courage under fire.

2 out of 5 stars But Enough About Me..........2007-09-20

Having read the compelling Newsweek article that became the catalyst for the book, I was expecting much more than what was finally produced. As another reviewer mentioned, too much of the book was spent on CDR Jadick's personal history and trite stories about everyday life downrange. (Though the latrine story was pretty doggone funny...)
Perhaps it's difficult to produce a tome about one aspect of one battle - but others have managed. Those who have, however, are usually historians and not docs.
A bad book review should be understood for what it is. A book review. This is not a criticism of the author's valor or medical skill, which is worthy of every accolade that's been bestowed.

1 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2007-08-16

Does not deserve to share a shelf with medical accomplishments such as Atul Gawande's Better or Complications. The book is filled with trite sentences and tainted with the robotic marine mentality. Slow and reads like you yourself are in hell.

5 out of 5 stars You are there in the Minds and Hearts........2007-07-16

Feel the heat, taste the dust, squint in the sun while horror is delivered to you on the hour.

5 out of 5 stars A Jewel of a Novel.......2007-07-01

having been in the Navy I found this book a fine read. His explanation of the Marine/Navy world was perfect. Corpmen are always highly respected by all. Beyond that it shows the great men and women and their beliefs toward our wonderful country. Soemtimes when we see the faults by politicians and others and we wonder how we will make it as a country all we have to do is look toward the fine men and women that serve us and our country. Let our hearts go out and let us in the future be ready to help them in all they will need.

5 out of 5 stars On Call In Hell by Cdr. Richard Jadick.......2007-06-25

The book was riveting...hard to put down. I read it in two days, mainly because I wanted to experience what Marines and Navy Corpsmen experience in combat, and I certainly did and then some. My son's heroic rescue on Thanksgiving Day, 2004 was clearly documented, as was his death in combat the next day. Kudos to the corpsmen who literally go through the gates of hell to rescue a wounded Marine!

Product Description

So much of a medical organization s success rides on the leadership, conduct, and performance of its physicians. How does a health care organization engage its physicians to lead by example? And how does a physician in the midst of 25 appointments, 30 phone messages, hospital rounds, and the details of managing a clinical practice do what needs to be done to foster satisfaction and loyalty among patients? Practicing Excellence eloquently answers these questions. Stephen C. Beeson, MD, has created a brilliant guide to implementing physician leadership and behaviors that will create a high-performance workplace built on collaboration, commitment, purpose, and making a difference in the lives of the patients it serves.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Everyone who gives or receives medical care!.......2007-10-07

Dr. Beeson is meticulously thorough in describing the care every patient should be receiving every day from every healthcare professional. In reading this book, I found myself making notes in the margins and highlighting several excerpts that I found especially useful. I could not put it down until I had read it cover to cover. This book NEEDS to be read and MUST be followed in order for physicians to perform at their true potential. If all physicians followed Dr. Beeson's words of wisdom, we would likely see a drastic decline in litigation, and a suprising increase in patient satisfaction.

5 out of 5 stars Something For Everyone in Healthcare--A Must Read!!!.......2007-09-24

This book is a must read for any physician or healthcare leader that wants to improve the connection they have with their patients, increase patient retention and loyalty, attract and recruit new business, and improve the quality, safety, and service in how healthcare is delivered. The book is well written and easy to read with practical tips that can be used right away. The one reviewer's comments about this applying to only new or beginning physicians misses an important point. While some of the tips may seem like common sense and basic professionalism, they are surprisingly absent from a lot of healthcare systems and practices. The beauty of the book is that it connects you back to those fundamental principles that can get lost in the day to day, but which our patients value and actually need in order to support the best possible outcomes.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have read for physicians.......2007-09-24

Physicians find practical tips that will ensure that you are consistently effectively communicating with your patients!

2 out of 5 stars A review of basic professionalism.......2007-09-23

Not at all what I expected from the description. The majority of this book turned out to be a review of basic professionalism, rather than an introduction to how quality improvement concepts could be applied to an individual's practice. The book is perhaps suitable for a "Doctoring" course (introduction to clinical medicine for 1 and 2nd year medical students), but I found the tone of the book often grating and lacking in depth. I suspect there are better books out there for this. While a review of the basics can often be helpful, the simplistic presentation makes it very hard for me to see how any practicing physician would find this book useful.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Physicians.......2007-09-17

This book is a Must Have for any physician that is looking for ways to improve clinical outcomes through patient communication, decrease potential for litigation, increase pateint loyalty and build their practice. Practicing Excellence is as the title imples, a roadmap to excellence in the practice of medicine
