Needed Advice.......2006-12-03
I found this book on goal-free living to be very helpful and refreshing with all the great advice and perspective it had to offer. Like Shapiro says, the lessons are unbelievable, they are just unsaid. Some of us have a longer way to go than others to get to being relaxed and accepting when it comes to life, but as someone on that journey myself this book was a great help. I would highly recommend reading it.
Discover Who You Are and Be True to Yourself!.......2006-10-12
Many people live their lives to please others -- their parents, their spouses, their employers or their friends. Others find themselves caught up in cookbook advice that will lead to being wealthy . . . such as live where the costs are low (but there are drawbacks to living in the middle of the Sahara Desert). Still others pick goals and never get around to rechecking their choices.
Creativity expert Stephen Shapiro challenges these people to get in touch with themselves and pursue a life that pleases them every day . . . not just on days when major goals are accomplished or praise is won from others. It's a noble and worthwhile message.
Although Mr. Shapiro was not a teenager in the 1960s, he could have been. Many of the book's themes will resonate powerfully with those who love New Age approaches learned in those distant days. In addition, his viewpoint is one that those in the Judeo-Christian tradition will find comfortable.
His concept is boiled down from 150 interviews with those leading pleasing lives into the following principles:
Use a compass, not a map (this allows you to be flexible in making progress towards uncovering and enjoying your passions)
Trust that you are never lost (look around to see what's good about where you are and keep moving ahead rather than sticking with the past)
Remember that opportunity knocks often, but sometimes softly (listen to that wee, quiet voice within -- Christians will like this advice!)
Want what you have (appreciate everything: it's all good for you)
Seek out adventure (be open to that road less traveled and go for the zest every day!)
Become a people magnet (alone you can do little, together almost anything is possible)
Embrace your limits (look for what's good about what you cannot do and back off from doing too much)
Remain detached (be like the meditator who sees herself from outside herself)
Curiously, although the book's title is Goal-Free Living, the Goalaholic quiz in the back suggests that you can be too goal-less for your own good. That's called being Directionless.
The phraseology differentiates between goals (which are usually bad because they often don't reflect what you really want) and aspirations (which are good because they inspire you and feed your passion).
Phraseology aside, if you have goals that fit your aspirations, you probably can use all kinds of goals.
I wondered how I would rank on the quiz. I turned out to be Goal-Free which surprised me because I use goals quite a lot. Apparently, my goals must be in tune with my aspirations. Whew!
This book isn't for everyone. But if you often question how you ended up with a life that you don't really care for, this book will be a superb guide to leading you back to what's important for you.
If you liked Mr. Shapiro's book, 24/7 Innovation, you'll find this book is quote compatible with that work (and better written): This of this book as 24/7 Living Innovation.
Enjoy your life!
Thoughtful, practical alternative to highly goal-focused approach to life.......2006-09-07
Stephen Shapiro's books doesn't really recommend being "goal free" -- it recommends being clear about what's really important and focusing on getting the most out of the present rather than focusing foremost on the future. He is laying out the value of this versus being overly goal-focused (the "it's the journey, not the destination" perspective). He offers a well thought out approach to living a fulfilling life that will especially resonate with anyone with a high Myers Briggs "perceiver" preference. If you spend a lot of time feeling you "should" have more and better goals, this book may give you an alternative way to look at your journey.
The Fun & Effectiveness of Living in the Moment.......2006-08-04
As an experienced voice instructor, I see students all the time who work really hard at their goal of "trying to sing". What inevitably happens is that they strain their throats, stick their necks out and hurt themselves in the process!
In order to really sing beautifully, easily and expressively, we need to relax, breathe and align ourselves with our passion in the moment (not worrying about what just happened or what should happen next).
Stephen Shapiro's goal-free take on life reminds me that this is also true in the rest of your life -- and I definitely have been needing the reminder lately!
As our music school's executive director with major fundraising deadlines, it's been MUCH more of a challenge.
Goal-free Living helped me to look at my past 2 years and realize that the times I have gotten the best results were the times that I was open to the flow and serendipity of life in the moment and took care of myself. The times that I was stressed, overworking and desperate were the times that I was the least effective. The past week was living proof!
Thank you Stephen for your fun, inspiring and life-changing book!
From another perspective, many of the tools he recommends are easy to understand explanations of Buddhist philosophies that have been working and respected for centuries.
And what incredible people he interviewed! The fascinating stories of the voodoo priest, the dating club members, the CIO of Intel are worth your time and money alone. I'd love to see a sequel of all the interesting stories and people that couldn't fit into this book.
Need a confusion-free sequel.......2006-07-02
From a marketing perspective, the title works. As a career consultant, I meet many people who are terrified of goals and, at the same time, desire a new life that can be delivered as quickly as a cheese pizza.
But in choosing a "goal-free" premise, author Shapiro finds himself doing just what he argues against. On page 61, Shapiro brings up the New Age slogan, "What you focus on, expands." Following through, he needs to heed the wisdom of the classic law of attraction authors. Instead of seeking to be debt-free, they tell us, we should see prosperity. The universe hears the word "debt" and gives us more.
Whether you accept law of attraction or think it's hokey, I'd say it's important to demand consistency. Self-contradiction can be a credibility buster.
That said, why write a book based on the premise of something you don't want? What replaces goals -- spontaneity? serendipity? seizing the moment?
In attacking goals, Shapiro uses a very specific concept of goals. At one point he compares having goals to following a recipe. The best cooks, he says, eventually learn to create their own recipes. But, as he acknowledges, they know what they're not using.
Shapiro also seems to attack goals that come from others. Most career consultants would agree. Those who become lawyers, doctors and salespersons to satisfy a parent's dream often become restless and dissatisfied. But some people dream of those very achievements, which call for considerable sacrifice along the way.
Finally, Shapiro loses credibility for me when he relies on Myers-Briggs to differentiate goal-oriented vs goal-free individuals. Everyone should read Annie Paul's book, The Cult of Personality, before resorting to the controversial and unscientific MBTI.
In the end, this book seems to be more about taking control of your life and getting an honest sense of what you want. Most of the content seems good, if not especially original. Why get hung up on whether you're following or not following goals?
And what if we decide to follow some of the author's recommendations, such as, "Become a people magnet." Are we or are we not pursuing a goal? And who cares?

Book Description
The exciting world of professional soccer comes to life in this compelling sequel to GOAL! The Dream Begins. Young soccer player Santiago Munez has come a long way from the barrios of Los Angeles. He has become one of Newcastle United’s most outstanding players. He is so good, in fact, that he is recruited for one of the world’s best teams, Real Madrid.
So Santiago leaves dreary northern England for the sunny shores of Spain. As part of Real Madrid, he is no longer just a soccer player--he’s also a celebrity. He can now afford fast cars, a fancy house, and practically anything else he’s ever dreamed of. But these luxuries come with a price: He is constantly swarmed by paparazzi. And while Santiago travels the world with the team, his fiancée, Roz, is left behind most of the time, uneasy about his fast-paced new lifestyle.
Santiago struggles to keep his balance, but when someone from his past unexpectedly resurfaces in Madrid, his charmed life begins to crumble. Will Santiago be able to keep playing great soccer while dealing with the pressures--and temptations--of fame?

I bought this book for my son........2007-10-25
My thirteen year-old son has been playing soccer since he was apprxoimately 5 years old. He loved the Goal I movie and I am always looking for ways to encourage more reading.
When I told him that I ordered the Goal II book, he started checking the mail each day to see if it arrive. While I have not read the book yet, Goal II had a magnetic effect on my son; he couldn't put the book down and he finished reading it in less than two days. Based on his reaction alone, I would suggest any soccer lover buy this book!

Chadron MOPS loves Tricia Goyer!!!!.......2007-07-12
If you can name the members of the "Brat Pack", wore leg warmers, or can still recite the lyrics to a Cyndi Lauper song, then this book is for you. Children of the 1980s are fondly referred to as Generation X. Tricia Goyer's book Generation NeXt Parenting explores the parenting styles of this generation. Tricia's insight from her own childhood lead her to change her parenting style to separate her from her baby boomer parents. This book is easy to pick up and start reading from where you left off. She has a style of writing, which incorporates original text, Biblical reference, quotes from other parents, and 156 other cited authors. She is able to bring each chapter together with an 80's song lyric which brought back a lot of my teen memories. In this day and age we are inundated with an overwhelming amount of how-to books. However, this book offers a practical approach to parenting with a study guide to develop your parenting skills. I would recommend it to fellow Gen X'ers.

Boomers: great gift for your daughter.......2007-06-26
Okay, I admit it--I'm not a Generation X mom; I'm a boomer mom, but the mom of several in the next generation and now the grandma of one and one-to-be. However, I found Tricia Goyer's book engaging, immensely helpful, understanding and just plain fun. I'm giving it to my daughter--who often feels the older parenting books just don't "fit." The author has done extensive research on parenting, has lived the ups and downs of being a mom to several kids (one from her teens), and has studied and incorporated the wisdom of scripture. I highly recommend this book.
Wise, Yet Never Pompous.......2007-02-06
For a few years now I've been a fan of Goyer's novels, with their realistic details, believable characters, and fast pacing. "Generation Next Parenting" is my first introduction to her non-fiction skills, and I'm suitably impressed. Here, too, Goyer deals with believable scenarios and honest struggles that Christian parents face.
I am the father of two daughters, ages 12 and 14. My wife and I have parented from the onset with the belief that we want to prepare our kids for life, not just protect them from it. Goyer finds that balance in this easy-to-read book, offering encouragement and philosophical angles to raising children. The pages are rich with spiritual insight, Scriptural foundations, and bits of humor. The quotes from Gen-X bands (Chicago, Gloria Estefan, Talking Heads, etc) add a light touch to these sometimes serious issues.
If you're struggling with your own generational parenting style, if you're wondering how well you are doing in God's eyes, or if you're just interested in a wise, yet never pompous, guide to "getting it right," then Tricia Goyer's book is for you. (And don't forget to check out here great fiction titles!)
Thoughts from an Old GenXer.......2007-01-20
"Generation NeXt" turned out to be an intriguing read for me. I am on the line between Boomers and GenXers. Different sources have placed me in each camp, so if I'm a GenXer, I'm an old one.
My review will be from the perspective of an old GenXer with a teenager and young adult children. At times, as I read "Generation NeXt" I felt exactly that, old, but then I'd turn a few pages and identify with exactly what Tricia had penned.
Had I read this book when my children were younger, I think I would have gained insight leading to freedom from some guilt baggage I lugged around for far too many years.
Tricia's "Generation NeXt Parenting" is an encouraging pat on the back with plenty of spiritual and practical challenges tossed in. She doesn't take traditional problems and toss out advice on how to handle it as much as she covers the holistic issues of parenting and Christlikeness.
If you are looking for another parenting book that has an index and multiple tips on how to handle potty training, you won't find much in "Generation NeXt." However, if you desire to dig to underlying motivations on your part and your children's behaviors, there is help offered here. Of course, a lot of the advice is what we who call ourselves "Christian" know because it's preached from the pulpit, radio and other books. But it bears repeating until we "get" it. Tricia gives practical ideas for how to get on track or back on track spiritually so that you can be the parent God calls you to be.
I learned far more from "Generation NeXt" than I thought I would. Tricia peppers her thoughts with those from other struggling parents and facts regarding the unique building blocks GenXer's have been given.
I thought of several friends who have younger children who could benefit from this book and intend to get a copy to them.
Generation Next Parenting, by Tricia Goyer.......2006-12-25
In today's generation, Christian parents face more obstacles than in any other point in history, perhaps even more so than those early Christians who hid their churches in their homes. With the advent of cable television, the Internet, cell phones and seemingly omnipresent advertisements telling our children - and let's be honest, us - how to look, act, dress, live, and what to believe in, Christians are engaged in all out warfare for not only for our own souls, but those of our children as well.
It doesn't help that Christianity is more splintered than it's ever been. A line has been drawn down the middle, and sides have been chosen: there are those on one side who deride "cultural sensitivity" and "Contemporary Worship" as "watered-down" and departing from Scriptural truth, and those on the other side who sneer at folks still reading their New King James Bibles, calling them "legalistic" and "not with the times". Popularity of speakers and spiritual self-help books abound, to the point where recently, when a young lady was threatened by a burglar, she pulled out - not the Bible - but rather a popular devotional book instead.
So, there a skirmishes all around, one side pointing the finger at another, but one thing that cannot be denied is the almost overwhelming crop of young parents and even younger children who feel isolated and cut off from God. They are desperately seeking answers in a post-modern age that refutes the sovereignty of answers, and many of them feel desperarely alone in their fight.
Generation Next Parenting, by award winning novelist Tricia Goyer, is an excellent devotional - not self-help book, not sweeping craze built on well-meaning concepts and snazzy catch phrases. It's an excellent tome of guidance for today's young parents. Founded on sound, Biblical principles - using only three or four different translations of the Bible, rather than fifty - Generation Next cuts right to the heart of what it means to be a young parent today; facing challenges and worldly opposition that our parents and grandparents never had to face.
A big selling point of this book is Goyer's frankness concerning her own mistakes and downfalls in life; she's open and honest - sometimes painfully so (but in an empathetic, good way). For me, as a young "Gen X'er" parent myself, this made quite an impact: I can't count how many times I've read a devotional book by some award winning speaker, pastor, or theologian, and thought to myself - "Hmm...must be nice living in your world." However, throughout Generation, I laughed, I winced, I sometimes felt stirred, (no, I didn't cry - because of course, we men never do that....sniff.)
The book's format is unique, as well - filled with relevant cultural quips and anecdotes, (those of us secret Duran Duran admirers will feel right at home), it's laid out more like a study guide or textbook, rather than a...well...really big book with lots of words that'll never get finished in the middle of work, doing the laundry, feeding the kids, changing the diapers, (which this man does do), and running the kids to every practice and event known to man. But don't worry, "busy bees" - simplify is one of this book's loudest hearkening calls.
On a final note, MEN should absolutely, positively read this book as well. Though it's written with a decided slant toward the female reader, for too long Christian men have distanced themselves from the "messier" side of leading the home spiritually (and I do mean "messier" literally; my father always said he changed the required amount of diapers a man was supposed to - one for me, and one for my sister!). This book gives practical, ground floor advice for all parents who desire their homes to be Godly ones, and should be on every Christian "Gen X'er's" shelf.

The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable
ASIN: 0385417993
Release Date: 1995-01-01 |
Book Description
In what may be the most radical business book ever published, philosopher Jay Ogilvy shows that living without a goal is the only way to accomplish anything. In the 1980s we ran our lives with all the direction and confidence filofaxes and to-do lists could provide. Always knowing exactly where we were headed, we climbed toward the goals corporate America held out in front of us like so many carrots: higher salaries, better titles, more impressive offices. But after a decade of climbing, the air is getting thin. We crave the chance to create, to express ourselves, and to make a difference, not just a living. It is time, says businessman/philosopher James Ogilvy, to tear up the to-do lists and grant ourselves the freedom to enjoy what E. M. Forster calls "the lights and shades that exist in the greyest conversation." Ogilvy shows that richness and color and flavor flood back into our lives once we set aside the goals that hold us captive. He explores how philosophers (from Plato to Nietzsche), lovers, ideologues, and executives have at one time or another lived without goals. What emerges from his argument is a new look at how to achieve personal creativity and freedom by fashioning one's day to-day life, not as a larger goal-producing machine, but as a personal work of art.

Great Title.......2007-10-14
I was very excited when this book came out back twelve years ago. I purchased it with the expectation of finding a whole new perspective. Unfortunately, for me, it wasn't useful and I didn't finish reading it. I hope it is more helpful to others.
goals vs. Goals.......2003-01-16
First of all, the editorial reviews for this book are mistaken on two points; the author's name is James, not Jay Ogilvy and this is NOT a business book. The principles could be applied to a business environment but the book hardly deals directly with this at all. James Ogilvy deserves credit for attempting to unravel a very complex and paradoxical (e.g. how can you have the goal of not having a goal?) issue. How can we, in a goal-oriented society, live without being driven and obsessed by an endless parade of grand goals? The simple answer, and one that is given in many other books, is to say that we should relax and "let go" of our desires in a Zen or Taoist manner. Ogilvy does advocate this, but he also attempts to deal with the question in a more thorough and philosophical manner. Unfortunately, his arguments sometimes seem like streams of consciousness that don't always accomplish their...goals. Still, the discussion is always interesting. Some of Ogilvy's best lines seem almost like incidental, throwaway phrases that don't always fit into the larger argument. I suppose that's consistent with his message. He does make a few quite valuable and coherent points. He differentiates "small g" goals and "large G" Goals. It is the latter he would have us relinquish. If we live entirely without goals, our lives will sink into nihilism. If we pursue large Goals, however, we will always be seeking gratifications in the future that will almost always disappoint us even if we do achieve them. Ogilvy illustrates his case by creating two fictional characters, Spike and Lila. Spike is a young slacker type who illustrates the pitfalls of goallessness; Lila is a Goal-driven baby-boomer who has been let down by one Goal after another. Spike and Lila could have been fleshed out more; they only appear as actual characters in one chapter, though Ogilvy refers to them elsewhere. Another quibble I had is that Ogilvy is prone to making broad generalizations. Like many authors and social scientists, he sums up entire decades with one or two words (e.g. the 70s were the "me" decade, the 80s were materialistic). In a book that tries to dig deeply in other ways, this kind of reductionism is a little annoying. I would also argue with some of his assumptions concerning language and postmodernism, but these are interesting to contemplate whether you agree with him or not. Plato, Freud and Nietzsche (along with Howard Hughes) are all invoked as representing different positions on the Goal quagmire. For good reasons, Ogilvy favors Nietzsche as the wisest on these issues. Overall, Living Without A Goal tackles some very important issues that are relevant to our personal lives as well as society.
nietzsche's goalessness as such.........2001-06-09
When I saw this book on the shelf of my local library, I knew that it was something I had been looking for. It has always struck me how, pyschologically, humans are always thinking towards some greater end in their future, and in the mean while miss being alive in the present moment of endless creative possibilities. James Ogilvy logically defines the life of Goalessness, and clearly specifies the philosophies that it is NOT and what it is confused with. It is a life of artfulness and without extremes, from the perspective of abandonment of politics and religion. Living without a Goal is like creating a work of art in the sense that artistic creativity serves no goal outside itself. Like the artist in his studio, the person in a life must create from the inside out rather than relying on some great blueprint in the sky to justify her actions here on earth. Better to take artistic creation as a metaphor: to see in the challenge of artistic creativity a model or a likeness for the challenge of living life without a Goal. It is not selfishness, it's not hedonism, but it is also not a life without desires (detachment, as in Buddhism) and yes it WILL be a patchwork of smaller goals lest you find this idea impossible or absurd. The difference is that they are not hinged on to any other greater goal besides themselves. There is a necessary balance between freedom and discipline. I highly enjoyed his philosophical and clear, honest style of composition. Recommended!
Starts with an interesting premise but doesn't deliver.......2000-02-26
I like Ogilvy's premise that we should stop striving toward a distant Goal and be more artful about the small details of living. Unfortunately, though, most of the book goes off the deep end into unreadable philosophical abstractions ("Narcissism Degree Zero," "Semiotics and Sublimation"). Most readable are the stories about real lives -- the author's, Howard Hughes's, Lila's, Spike's. If you're interested in this topic, your time is better spent reading Julia Cameron's THE ARTIST'S WAY or Thomas More's THE SOUL OF SEX.
Disappointing.......1999-11-01
In today's pace driven world, I was looking forward to a little respite in James Ogilvy's book. Unfortunetely, it didn't deliver for me. What suggests to be a guide to finding creativity and fulfillment, ends up being nothing more than the author's sterile philosophical rantings. Actually, I don't know how it ended since I only made it through half the book. I would have liked less history and more "evidence" or anecdotes from the author's life that promote this way of living. Ogilvy wants to sell us on "goallessness", but doesn't offer any kind of convincing argument. Too bad, since I would tend to agree with this point of view!!
