2 out of 5 stars Erros and lack of details make this a poor engineering reference.......2007-08-17

I was looking for a book on WiMax as a reference for designing WiMax radios. Trying to understand WiMax by reading the IEEE 802.16, 16e standards is difficult. The original 802.16-2004 standard was organized in a convoluted way. On top of that there were numerous errors, even in the mathematical formula and the critical system parameters. 16e was written as a errata and addendum to .16. Given the amount of major changes required by .16e, this format of a .16+.16e makes it almost impossible to read to gain engineering understanding. I was looking for a book that could untangle this mess and present the information in .16+.16e in a linear and logical way, if not the MAC, at least the PHYs. The Andrews book does not serve this purpose. Most of the technical details of the WiMax system are missing. For example, a WiMax radio starts with transmitting or receiving the preambles. There are hundreds of preambles in WiMax. I would expect the book to describe all these preambles for reference. It would be even better, if there are insights into the mathematical properties of these preambles for the receiver design. If you agree with my statement, just let me say that the Andrews book contains none of the details the preambles beyond saying WiMax has something called preamble. Of the limited amount of PHY details the book did contain, there are critical errors. For example, the book seems to suggest that the downlink PUSC subchannels consist of two chunks of contiguous OFDM subcarriers of 14 each. According to the 802.16/16e, the 28 subcarriers in a subchannel are scattered. For the lack of details, I feel this book serves poorly as an engineering design reference. It also serves poorly as a guide to untangle the material in IEE802.16/16e due to the lack of details and the critical errors.

4 out of 5 stars $69.99 buys you depth.......2007-05-29

As of May 28 2007, if you are going to fork some money onto a WiMax book, this book should be it. The authors were smart to concentrate in explaining the technology building blocks of the standard instead of just following the structure of the 802.16 document. I have read mostly the chapters related to the PHY and I found the explanations and examples clear and to the point. Even if you are not interested in the WiMax standard per se, this book contains very good information about OFDM/OFDMA and multi-antenna techniques for broadband wireless systems. It also has a couple of chapters about link level and system level performance of WiMax that add even more depth to the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall introduction to IEEE 802.16 technology.......2007-05-26

For those looking for an overview of IEEE 802.16 technology, or for those looking to come up to speed after a period of absence such as me, this is a good book.

4 out of 5 stars an engineer's book.......2007-05-15

Andrews suggests in the Preface that the book will be suited to a wide range of people who want to learn about WiMax. From engineers to graduate students to managers and executives and others. Indeed, there are high level descriptions, scattered throughout the chapters, accessible to those without an engineering degree. But typically, these are introductory summary remarks. The bulk of every chapter is really best understood if you have that engineering background. While the author naturally desires as wide an audience as possible, this is really an engineer's book.

The overviews do show that WiMax exhibits strong advantages over the current and popular WiFi. Like having robust security protocols, including the Advanced Encryption Standard (aka Rijndael) and 3DES. Plus WiMax has terminals that possess built-in digital certificates with public and private keys and MAC addresses. Contrast this with WiFi, whose commonly used Wireless Encryption Protocol has some severe deficiencies.

Another important advantage of WiMax is how it supports extreme mobility modalities. Where you, the end user, can travel in a vehicle up to 120 kmph, and have seamless handoff between WiMax basestations.

Many chapters are highly mathematical. Indeed, one chapter on multi-antennas reads like an excursion into advanced linear algebra or matrix theory. It even evokes the Frobenius norm of a matrix, which I'd only ever seen before in a pure maths course.

Of all the chapters, maybe that which discusses Mobile IP could be the most interesting. It takes the Internet as we know it, and removes a serious current limitation to moving your machine, and having it keep connected to the Internet. Mobile IP is a cunning overlay on IPv4. While it can also be done, and much easier, in IPv6. The only problem is when the latter will start to dominate v4.

Overall, the book is a very promising pitch for WiMax deployment.

As wireless communications technologies evolve, Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) seems a strong candidate for providing multimedia to the handset, as well as Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services (UMTS)--which is to say common wireless communications standards over most of the world. WCDMA for UMTS sets out to decipher the standards documents of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Specifically, this book deals with the 3GPP documents on Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) for Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA). This book should prove valuable to readers who plan to implement WCDMA in hardware designs or service offerings.

A series of engineering problems make up the backbone of the book, and each part of the deployment process is explained via text and calculations. For example, in the discussion on planning a radio network for WCDMA service provision, the book explains precisely how to take into account requirements (for quality of service, user capacity, and coverage) and conditions (such as terrain). Readers get formulas into which they can plug relative traffic predictions for voice, real-time data, non-real-time data, and overhead. There's also an explanation of how to interpret the formula output for deploying antennae. This is a serious engineering handbook for those who are involved in deploying WCDMA. --David Wall

Topics covered: Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA)--what it is, and (especially) how to implement it in a wireless network. Radio interface protocols, packet traffic, and network planning all are covered.

4 out of 5 stars improving mobile communications.......2007-01-07

The content is highly technical. Enough "meat" for the practising communications engineer who needs to know this topic well enough to actually develop devices. The book starts off with chapters that give a good general introduction to WCDMA. Explaining in broad terms how it works and the business applications. Where the emphasis is on improving mobile communications, in no small part by permitting higher bandwidth content to be delivered to cellphones.

However, there are implications for the entire network. While the layman just sees her cellphone, the engineer also has to account for changes to the basestation and various radio controllers. Much of the book revolves around explaining what changes are needed.

5 out of 5 stars Read "a different" book before this one........2003-02-07

Otherwise it might be somehow confusing. This book is a must for professionals as another reviewer stated but it is not very suitable as the first book on UMTS technologies. This book serves best as supplementary reading. For example new-beginner readers might get confused talkink about SIP at the first chapter before explaining W-CDMA and core-network layout. Anyway, this book contains wealth of information on UMTS technologies and warmly recommended for serious readers.

3 out of 5 stars Useful compilation of standards, if you need them.......2001-06-16

If you like to read standards or have to in the course of your work, this book offers a useful and succinct compilation. Other than that, there is nothing to recommend this book as it does not help improve your understanding. Then again, this is not the kind of book which people who do not have to work with standards will want to read.

There is a short chapter on cdma2000 at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Not for newbies, must for pros.......2001-06-04

This book delivers exactly what it promises: a profound, compact and clear description of WCDMA for UMTS. The reader is expected to understand quite advanced concepts of mobile communications, hence it is not a good book for managers who want to know what 3G is all about nor for undergraduate students who want to learn cellular system basics. It is an excellent book for experienced network planners, protocol designers or research engineers, for example, who want to move from 2G to 3G. Simple test: if you don't know what are Erlang-B, orthogonal codes or layered protocol architecture, you want to study them first from another book.

2 out of 5 stars umts.......2001-05-29

With UMTS you must read what you can get - unfortunately what you can get is not aleays what you want - so with this book. Although the authors seem well informed, they are not god communicators - their explanations are alternatively trivial or incomprehensible, their diagrams, in most cases copied slavishly from the specifications, explain nothing. Perhaps this book is useful as a reference after the subject is comprehended. Comprehension does not lie here.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must have if you start with IMS.......2007-07-11

Possibly the best technical book I've ever read.

I work with IMS technology and we use the book in our department to introduce IMS to newcomers. But I also work in European projects on IMS and the book is the main reference for most of the other teams involved.

You just need this book and the 3GPP specifications for anything you want to do with IMS.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2006-11-18

This is a very good book on SIP-based Internet Multimedia Subsystem. The book nicely depicts both the Internet and the IMS architecture implementation of SIP, AAA, VoIP centric security and policy, QoS, presence service, media encoding and transport, and instant messaging. By reviewing this book, a reader will acquire comprehensive knowledge of emerging VoIP and Video Telephony Layer 5 architecture in wireless network. The book can be used as a senior or master-level text book, a useful review guide for the provider engineers, architects, technology strategist, product managers, and technical managers. SIP programmers, implementers, and standard engineers may find the book "not detailed enough". Since technology described in this book and their standards are rapidly changing, authors need to keep the book regularly updated.

Sohel Khan, Principal Technology Strategist, Sprint-Nextel

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2006-08-23

This book intends to be the de facto handbook for IMS, but it ends up being mostly reference material.

While it has some fairly detailed descriptions of the standards and protocols involved, it does not go beyond the specifications already publicly available, or the methods that some vendors already use. Some chapters read like a translation of technical drafts, while others concerning less defined areas are very high level.

The authors, while doing a good job assembling useful information, probably set out to write this book too early, when IMS was still only a reference framework, without widespread service provider adoption. Furthermore, the corresponding expertise across the industry is missing, thus making this a less elaborate view on the services that IMS would provide, compared to what the book's subtitle would suggest.

If you need a book on IMS right now, and are not happy with the abundance of online materials, buy this book. If you are looking for a comprehensive guide on what IMS means for providers and customers, I personally have not read such a book yet - but even if it has not been released, it is only a matter of time. Keep your eyes peeled for snippets of information coming out of service providers and infrastructure vendors, and for the ongoing debates in the industry around the evolution of the service delivery platform.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but bad index..........2006-02-23

The book is good, expensive but good.
However I'm very disappointed about the index (the alphabetical word list place at the end of the book). Lots of important key words are not listed in the index, which makes the reading difficult. Camarillo, please improve the index!!!

I've also noticed some mis-writings , spelling errors (not mayor issues)

Of course a basic background in telecommunications is needed in order to follow the book, if you do not have that basic knowledge then I do recommend to have the books "Understanding Telecommunications 1 and 2" (Ericsson) by the side when reading Camarillo's book.

4 out of 5 stars IMS - Revealed From the Inside.......2005-10-03

The 3G IMS book provides a look at IMS organization and SIP signaling from one of the people who were there while the protocols were being established. Since this is an emerging and still developing technology, the little insights like "this is what we intended to do here", and "this is where we want this eventually to go" will be emminently helpful in choosing equipment and network organizations.

I have to describe to customers how they might use IMS equipment and integratit into their networks. While this is no engineering level document, it is solid at describing the interfaces they will have to support. I think they will be assured by the information I now have to give them.

This is a bit pricey and the editing a bit sloppy, but then I find that the rule rather than exception with a lot of the inside information manuals.

This will be of great use and I hope it will arm me to be able to comfort customers that this architecture just might work.

4 out of 5 stars many problems for the student.......2005-04-20

This is not really a book big on theory. Instead, its main merit is a focused, problem-based approach. For long established subjects like calculus, say, the usefulness of having extensive problem sets for a student to tackle is apparent. And thus there are indeed plenty of texts to supply those problems.

But for the mobile wireless field, most standards and implementations are still so new. There has been little time for some author to come up with a suitable and indepth suite of problems, until this text. The comprehensive nature of these may be very attractive to a lecturer. Plus, the author also offers an adjunct solutions book.

The technical concepts which are at the core of design, implementation, research, and invention of wireless communication systems are presented in an order that is conducive to understanding the general concepts, as well as those specific to current and evolving wireless communication systems and standards.
The Author has done a great job of explaining Radio wave propagation which has historically been the most difficult problem to analyze and design for, since unlike a wired communication system which has a constant, stationary transmission channel (i.e., a wired path), radio channels are random and undergo shadowing and multipath fading, particularly when one of the terminals is in motion. I particularly liked the chapter on modeling spatial-temporal channels, which is vital for the development of smart antennas and position location systems.
The appendices contain hundreds of mathematical formulas and identities for general engineering work.
The compilation of the major wireless standards makes this book particularly useful as a single source of information for a wide range of wireless systems that are commercially deployed today.
I gave this book 4 stars as I feel that the problems included in the book should have the answers as well.
Niloufer Tamboly, CISSP

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Book.......2005-04-14

This is one of the best book for this field!

2 out of 5 stars Unorganized textbook.......2003-02-24

this book is not good for the beginner in wireless communication. I have to use this textbook, because it's the requirement form my instructor.

the author didn't organize this book as well as he should. All equations are not well explained...Sometime the students need to guess where this variable stands for or what parameter's meaning is. He wrote like the literature or drama.....no space for equation's explanation...all of them are in the same paragrah.

i really don't recommend this textbook and i still don't understand why my instructor uses this text

3 out of 5 stars Helpfull at most........2007-08-03

I only gave this book three stars because the author is rather jaded, and I am not entirely sure how much of what he says does what he says.

As an example: He spoke of remotely erasing data from devices to prevent someone who stole the device from obtaining data somewhere in the first chapter. That is simply not going to help you. If some one steals a device for the data, erasing it is not going to help you, they are just going to use a utility to rewrite all the allocation table indexs back to 1's, and whalla the data is back (if there smart they wont even have to buy anything to do it, because DOS has that utility built in). When it comes to file protection, encryption is the only way to go... unfortunately when someone has the device, if there good enough they can get at the key.

Making data hard to get at is one thing, but believing that there is an absolute solution is obsurd.

The book was helpful in that it introduced me to many if not most or all of the concepts. As with every one else that is most likely reading or going to read this book, I have not messed with wireless to terably much, and I now have a good bases to start researching the topics further... because I definitely do not trust this mans judgement.

The author also often feels that he can predict the future and tell you with in a good 3-6 month period of when certain vulnerabilities are going to be exploited... such as wireless viruses being written on a regular basis in mid 2006. That one has already been proven false... I suppose that is more of an annoying writing style though, I am sure that at some point they will start poping up more readily... just not in mid 2006!

5 out of 5 stars Wireless Frenzy.......2006-08-23

As a professional consultant, increasingly I have to deal with wireless networks. This book provides for me the details about wireless networking, all at my fingertips.
No, it's not a complete guide on how to setup and install a wireless network, but it's not supposed to be. A book like that would be out of date before it went to print! Rather, this book lays out the necessary information for integrating wireless platforms into corporate and business enterprise--securely! It's all about the tools to use and what job to use them for. Knowing the right tool for the right job is half of what this book is about. The other half is about scenarios and procedures and security and the theory behind the technology. Everything you need to know whether you are involved in corporate firewalling of wireless networks, security, integration, etc. This book is a must-read for anyone involved in network architecture and planning.

5 out of 5 stars Timely book- must read for IT professionals.......2006-08-15

I couldn't put the book down. Vacca's Guide to Wireless Network Security is the one-stop-shopping reference to everything you need to know about the security impacts associated with wireless technology. Just back from a roadtrip across the US, I was astonished to find almost every motel/hotel now equipped with wireless access. Upon use, I would always wonder about their implementations regarding the *real* protection of my data exchanges. This book has educated me and frankly has scared me quite a bit. IT professionals, this is a terrific read. Highly readable and highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars The only one of its kind.......2007-04-14

This actually is the only book that presents a treatment of wireless communincations in throughly rigorous way, and yet does not loose touch with practice. The usual books in digital communication, especially the industry standard Salehi, have mostly been outdated by this book.

I have done coursework with Viswanath, and was one of the students on which the initial drafts of this books was "tried and tested." Viswanath has few equals in his research area (which itself he keeps expanding), and consistently amazes everyone with how closely he is in touch with what the industry is doing. This is reflected throughout the book.

The book can be reqd with the standard prereqs - a good understanding of undergraduate to first year graduate probability is required understand anything in communications theory, so that goes without saying. Some parts of the book will carry more juice for people who have a good knowledge of information theory, but Tse & Viswanath include a beautifully written appendix for people without this knowledge. The appendix is worth reading by itself, even for people who have taken courses in information theory before! The chapter that compares various wireless systems alone is worth the price of the book.

As another reviewer pointed out, the exercises are not all simple. These were given in a homework setting, and there were TA's to assist people with the problems. They may be a little hard to solve alone.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Wireless Communications.......2007-03-30

Tse and Viswanath have done an excellent job with this book. The book is organized for graduate students (or practicing engineers) and it is a great resource for wireless communications. It can be easily read with a probability background. The necessary background for information theory is provided as an appendix. The analysis of the topics are easy to follow and the intuition behind the results are provided. I think, it is a must have book for wireless communications (especially if you are working in physical layer).

4 out of 5 stars It is a well-written book........2007-02-11

The book is well-written, in general. It tells the whole story: from the beginning, motivation to the way of solving problem.

5 out of 5 stars A new classic for digital communications.......2006-12-24

I'm a Communication Engineering PhD student. I just finished a Wireless course using this text. The subject matter is difficult and abstract. Tse and Viswanath do an outstanding job in interpreting many complex concepts. In fact, there are very few (if any) comparable books that venture in the direction that these authors take. Stephen Wilson's "Digital Modulation and Coding" and David MacKay "Information Theory, Inference & Learning Algorithms" come close. The great digital communications references: Lin and Costello, Wozencraft and Jacobs, Gallager, Proakis, Viterbi and Omura, present material in a very precise academic way with some effort to interpret results. However, none of these classics make the effort that T&V do distilling and communicating the essential concepts from start to finish. This is a talent in itself and T&V has really shown the beauty in this material. However, there is one criticism, the exercises have a high degree of difficulty. It would have better to include some easier warm up problems.

5 out of 5 stars Good Reference for Communication System Engineer.......2006-11-10

It is really a must-have reference if you are doing R&D in communication systems.

At last, a good RF book. Sure, it's not perfect, but it puts the others I've read to shame.

Yes, a book that doesn't consider 30MHz "really high". That's progressed beyond vacuum tubes. Hell, it even discusses them newfangled ICs. In fact, digital radio is probably given more coverage than analog! This is modern pro quality, not stuck in 1970s tinkerer's-land.

The most shocking thing is the complete omission of Smith charts. Though after reading this, learning to use these charts should be a lot easier.

Also, it's quite hilarious (or sad) when the author starts to discuss the enclosed Puff program, and the tone of the work jumps back about 20 years ("the program will work with CGA and EGA, but **VGA** is recommended because the text can be smaller", etc)!!!

A fair bit about layout and PCBs is discussed, though I would have liked even more detail. Also, some sort of summaries or decision trees would be useful for the more complex design areas like matching networks.

5 out of 5 stars What I expected.......2007-02-08

When I order from Amazon I expect prompt and accurate shipments.
This met those expectations.

5 out of 5 stars you will be happy to have this book.......2007-01-18

It is a great invaluable book, it is an anatomy of the wireless building blocks and should be in the library of all engineers interested in the RF field but if you are a beginner or advanced engineer this book may not fulfill your interests, this book covers a lot of topics in between these two levels. even if you are a beginner buy it for future refrence.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of wireless design.......2006-02-17

Complete wireless design was a very useful book in developing an understanding of wireless systems, filters, matching circuits, microstrips etc...

For those who have a sound knowledge in Electronic engineering and wish to develop their knowledge in RF design, this is a great book to start with. If you have already studied RF or have a modest knowledge within this field then this probably isn't the book for you (could be used as a reference).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Wireless Design.......2004-05-10

Circuits and Wireless Communication designers and Enthusiasts....ENJOY!

A true one-of-a-kind guide to wireless "design". It guides you through the design process step-by-step. The author presents design procedure for every circuit that make up a complete wireless system. He also provides design hints, tips and tricks. Primarily for Electrical Engineers and circuit and electronics enthusiasts, this book is a must for its primary audience. There's so much valuable information and experience in this book you won't find anywhere else.

The book is not intended for people with no electronics or circuit design background. People without such background will find the book difficult to follow and comprehend. Communication designers and engineers, however, will be extremely delighted with this book.
I'm greatly thankful for the author for his excellent book.

Good IMS book with satisfactory beginner to advanced content. Can benefit from some format enhancements and a better hierarchical approach to the IMS. Otherwise, I definitely recommend.

4 out of 5 stars The IMS: IP Multimedia Concepts and Services.......2007-03-17

This book stands out amongst the limited titles on IMS,which are really comprehensive in nature and would specially seem very well structured in terms of flow of information to those who have tried to go through endless revisions of 3GPP standards. But where this book disappoints is that it has only and only reffered to 3GPP standards and have got no referrence to 3GPP2 and some delta specifications by Cablelabs for cable service providers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional presentation.......2007-04-01

A very interesting and very well written book. A great deal of examples give a good feel about useful implementations and the limitations of concepts.

4 out of 5 stars Good for principiants.......2006-11-10

The book it is very simple, to them than are beginig to wireless or microwave systems. Easy to understood and not make a deep mathematical analysis.

2 out of 5 stars Introductory Material. Little Technical Details.......2002-01-19

This book gives brief introduction to many important aspects of RF and uW engineering. There are very little mathematical derivations and technical explainations. I'd suggest buying Microwave Engineering by the same author (David Pozar) which is an excellent book on the subject

5 out of 5 stars Great RF book.......2001-01-01

This book covers a wide range of knowledge needed to get started on RF engineering field. It covers background theories in wireless technology, transmission lines, antennas, filters, amplifiers, mixers, oscillators, some modern modulation techniques, and also transceiver architecture.

Although this book does not provide in depth coverage on those topics, it still provides enough background for begineers to get started in radio design with discrete components. Many practical examples are given including low noise amplifier design and practical filter transformation (Kuroda transformation) into microstrips.

One great thing about this book is its completeness from transmitting end to receiving end, which provide readers with better overall picture on what is needed in RF design.
