Simply the best of the best........2007-10-11
No matter how much or how little you know about power electronics,
fundamentals of Power Electronics by Erickson & Maksimoviac is the bible on power. Thorough, extremely well written full of references when you need to go deeper into any subject. Excellent problems with every chapter
and very well organized
Excellent, full of examples, easy to follow.......2006-09-20
This book is one of the best, most thorough and well explained textbooks I have encountered in the past 5 years of school. The authors, one of whom is teaching my course, present their explanations in a way that is both thorough and accessible. This is not a cookbook by any means - it is a very solid, detailed foundation for power electronics, and doesn't gloss over the important concepts like other books in the field. If you're just looking for a reference book with equations, circuits, and tables, this isn't for you. However, if you're looking for a text to study and understand in detail, you'll be right at home.
This book, when read and studied regularly, is very easy to follow and concepts are driven-home with solid examples. Very well done.

Lots of information with some open ended information.......2004-04-08
I would agree with the other reviewer that this is not a "how to" book. The book approaches the subject from an academic viewpoint. The reader is expected to fill in between the lines with previous experience. It appears that the authors, professors as U of C, supplement the text with worked out examples for their students. I would recomend it to people already versed in the subject and want more information.I found it for half price and this makes it worth buying as a reference.
Execellent Book.......2004-03-06
First off, this book is NOT a cookbook. It will not tell you how to design a power supply for a specific application. But this is not the books purpose. This book is written for those who wish to understand in depth knowledge of power conversion. It is written as a text book. If the reader took the time to understand what is written (and it is written well) then the person would be able to design a power supply for any application using any topolgy. It teaches you the first principles of power conversion in order for you to apply it. Out of all my power electronic books this is my favorite book by far. If you are a power supply designer this book is a must.

DIGITAL INTEGRATED CIRCUITS.......2007-08-01
It's a great book,I studied with it during the semester, and it covered all the topics i needed.
excellent book for fundamentals/reference.......2007-03-06
I used the first edition of this book in my graduate class. I found the book well-written with good examples and explanations. It also covers a diverse range of subjects and I still find myself referring to it when I have doubts. If you are having problems with understanding fundamentals, I highly recommend this book as a reference.
The Best "text"book to start Digial IC Design .........2006-12-17
I had this book for both my Undergraduate and graduate level VLSI Design classes. I cant think of other book that would make a perfect course textbook to learn 'Digital' Integrated Circuit (DIC) design. The book starts with device concepts to give you a good understanding the physics behind CMOS technology. Then it introduces the basics of CMOS circuits (inverter analysis) and covers the aspects of digital integrated design such as parastic analysis, logic families, memories, timing and complex architectures etc... The real world design, challenges and technologies are also given in the book through articles, discussions, problems and examples. It gives a good background and teaches the concepts so a designer would be able to choose a correct design paramaters, logic/arch. family and targets such as power/performance/noise/area.
The book does not go deep in to each subject since its intention is intro/intermediate. Also this book is not for serious circuit designers but its a start book to make one. Its the book to learn and broaden your knowledge on designing custom and high performace circuits.. The cons of this book would be that its not a user friendly at the beginning for a fresh starter but it will welcome and get you going pretty quick once you get the style of the author. I would recommend the Uyemura's book (CMOS Logic Design) for uncovered and extra examples to complete this book. And if you are looking more to designing complex high performance circuits, Chandrakasan's book (Design of High-Performance Microprocessor Circuits) would be the one.
Excellent Book for Electrical Engineers.......2006-03-29
Great book as it is very clear, methodical, and gives great examples in which you can actually follow unlike some others. I would also recommend going through the problem sets from the authors website online as it really helps solidify the concepts taught in this book. This book is highly recommended for budding VLSI designers or engineers who just want to learn a little bit about VLSI design!
Ok for transistor level ..........2006-01-28
Has some good information at the transistor level. However, the book falls apart after the first time you open it. I returned my first copy and got a brand new one, but same thing happened. The back of the book cracks and pages fall out as soon as you start flipping through the thing. Highly overpriced, as most books of this type are!

Book Description
The CMOS technology area has quickly grown, calling for a new text--and here it is, covering the analysis and design of CMOS integrated circuits that practicing engineers need to master to succeed. Filled with many examples and chapter-ending problems, the book not only describes the thought process behind each circuit topology, but also considers the rationale behind each modification. The analysis and design techniques focus on CMOS circuits but also apply to other IC technologies.
Customer Reviews:
Every designer in my company has this book.......2007-09-17
This is by far the best book for analog designer. The only thing I wish to see is to include some simulation examples such as: AC analysis, noise analysis...
Also, as the technology moves to sub-micron, long channel approximation is no longer accurate. I wonder if author can comment on how to size the transistors for fewer spice iterations.
Maybe we will see them in the 2nd edition.
Grown appreciation.......2007-06-02
The more my knowledge grew, the more I have appreciated returning to this book as a reference compared to any of the others. Razavi's explanations are lucid and directly to the point allowing me to quickly recall/re-understand concepts that I either once grasped and forgot or never really understood in the first place.
It is OK. There could be better ones.......2006-11-12
I have used this book in a graduate class. It is good and very rigorous. It has good amount of examples and plenty of end of chapter problems. It is a good treatment of the subject. However, it might be hard as introductory.
Disappoiting.......2006-03-07
The book is too theory-oriented; not suitable for engineers. I felt disappointed.
And the chapters on PLL and switched-cap. are too common-sense! No use at all for practising engineers...I don't want to recommend this book -
Great book........2006-01-29
Difficult Side
Read Sedra/Smith book before trying this one. It is really hard to follow. It's hard to differentiate between small and large signal analysis, since author uses the same notation for both. Watch out!
Good Side:
Book is on CMOS analog ICs, so it's specific.
Book is very thorough. Behzad Razavi explains the function of each resistor in a circuit. Book teaches on a high level. Author put in much effort.

NV Memory Technology book review.......2000-05-01
This book is one of the most comprehensive sources available for information on non-volatile memory ICs. The subject material gives in-depth coverage of EPROM, EEPROM and FLASH design, fabrication and reliability issues. The information is extremely well-organized, thorough and practical and was obviously written by practicing professionals as opposed to academia. The illustrations are numerous and excellent. Numerous references are cited as sources for additional information. This is NOT one of those technical books which is merely a collection of published aricles. The authors obviously established a structure of relevant topics prior to developing their subjects and choosing their reference sources. The weakest areas of the book were test and ultra low power NV design.

Skips from very basic to quite complicated.......2007-09-15
This book starts out with a well written introduction on different type of electronic components and how voltage etc... works, most of it is however covered in highschool physics. Then it howeverskips to semi complicated circuits with bad explanations on how they work. In my opinion the author should rather have described a few circuits in detail instead of many breifly, this would have given the reader a a much clearer understanding of electronics and circuitry. Overall im dissapointed.
Electronics for Dummies.......2007-08-31
This is a great starter book for those who have great desire to learn the basics. It was not boring. I honestly I would like to see an expanded version...maybe a vol.2.

Book Description
A basic grounding in one of today's quickly evolving technologies. To gain one's bearing in the whirlwind of rapid development in the digital theory arena, getting a firm grasp of the basics is vital. This book provides a solid foundation in the elements of basic digital electronic and switching theory. Down to earth, yet scholarly in approach, it builds on theory with discussions of real-world digital components, design methodologies, and tools. A companion Web site provides additional information.
Customer Reviews:
Poor Intro to Digital.......2005-05-22
This book was assigned for my undergrad intro digital logic class. It is probably the worst possible introduction to the subject. The material is only mildly to moderately difficult in practice, but the authors managed to make it convoluted. If you are unfortunate enough to have this book assigned, I suggest that you purchase another textbook on the subject, and just get the homework problems from your classmates or from the reserve copy at the library.
A Book Not To Read.......2002-11-01
This book is absolutely horrible. The Professor who teaches this class with this book HE WROTE, is utterly dispicible because of his teaching ability. This professor, at UC Irvine does not know the one bit in teaching a COMPLICATED subject like Digital Systems to a class who has had little to no experiece with this type of work. I hope this book is revoked for any reason, and hope that professor reads this review in order to gain some knowledge about the way he is teaching a class of Engineers in an era where knowledge is not automatically achieved, rather taught by knowledgable instructors.
Tell your teacher to get another book!.......2000-06-26
I used this book for an introductory logic design class. I was able to learn from it, but it was difficult. The teacher didn't even use it much. The book was not well written and hard to understand. I recommend learning from another book.
Good reference, poor for beginners.......2000-03-29
I began learning about hardware design with this book. Now I use it for reference.
But for beginners, this is not a very good book. Although hardware design is somewhat difficult to explain, the book does not analyze subjects in detail or how circuits work. When it does try to explain topics, it does not do so clearly and provides few examples. Unless you have outside help (such as a teacher, professor, teaching assistant, etc.), I would definitely recommend finding another book to learn about hardware design because you will struggle while trying to figure out how things work (if you are a novice).
If you want something detailed, this book ain't it.......1999-05-25
This book is very "bare" when and it doesn't offer enought examples. This book is difficult to understand and takes deciphering the material takes many tedious hours. Therefore, I would like to conclude by saying this is absolutly the worst text book that was ever written.

Excellent Book .......2005-04-09
In this book, the ideas and formulas are well presented to the readers. Notations are very consistent throughout the entire book. I have enjoyed reading this book.
Excellent.......2004-03-25
This is the best textbook I've ever read. The mix of theory and practice, examples and math, and the ordered introduction of concepts flows so well it reads like a treasure quest. Everything has its place, and the place is known - you just have to follow the signs and keep an eye out for those which are subtler than others, just to keep things alive and interesting. It's indicative of the clarity of thinking and broad sweep of this work that you would refer to it (I do and other students I know as well), for other subject matter such as communications, linear algebra, digital filters, probability and control theory. The homework problems are not just a series of one-liners as in most graduate level text books, but well-marked road maps addressing points discussed in the text and opening up new possibilities. The computer projects are very well commented and the results analysed. The language is concise yet fluid, and there are extremely few typos of any kind. This is a very, very high quality work.
Just what I needed.......2004-02-05
I work on 802.11b and 802.11a/OFDM modems and was looking for some kind of coherent text on decision feedback equalization and other tracking schemes when I stumbled upon this book. I'm deep into chapter three and I can already draw the following conclusions.
There are two things that make this book really great.
1) The teaching style. Besides having a wonderful way with words, the author uses plenty of subtle teaching principles that help in the understanding of the material like frequent repetition of the main concepts and slowly building up examples over different sections inside each chapter.
2) Content !!!! Its hard to assimilate abstract material like estimation theory without at the end having some type of useful application or algorithm to show for. The author's examples and computer projects on channel estimation, channel equalization, maximum ratio combining and Rake receivers are very popular building blocks for a variety of modems. It is very motivating to know that after labouring through the chapter the authors feels that you are now ready to understand decision feedback equalizers and so he presents you with a nice DFE computer project.
Difficult topics require competent teaching approaches and that is exactly what you will find in this book.
The only thing that would make this book even better would be a very brief introductory chapter on statistics and linear algebra. So if you are going through the book and you want to quickly revisit the definition of covariance or hermetian transpose there is one centralized section that has all the useful mathematical tools nicely listed.
As a practising engineer, I highly recommend this book.
Andreas S.
A True Masterpiece.......2003-10-07
This book is a true masterpiece. It contains the most complete treatment, theoretical and practical, of adaptive filtering that I've ever seen and I've seen just about every book on this topic on the market. In addition to the detialed theoretical derivations, this book is rich with numerous design examples and computer projects with provided matlab code. This equips the reader with proper tools to quickly understand the concepts and put them to practice with relative ease. I highly recommend this book to anyone serious about understanding adaptive filters.
A good book........2003-10-01
For all those of us, working in beamforming or OFDM or equalization or noise control, who find Haykin's writing uninspiring, Sayed's work has all the elegance of Prof Kailath's pedagogical style. This is one scrumptious intellectual meal. Every extant variation of the LMS and RLS algorithms is detailed, and some histroical context provided. The mathematical background needed or assumed is rudimentary. The Matlab projects are extensive in scope - yet, like most Matlab sources, they will take work in understanding their nuances.

BJT Explanation is the best I have ever read.......2006-09-02
This book is a great book in my opinion. I have not finished all of it but find it to be a great reference. The thing I liked the most about this book so far was the explanation of the BJT!! It is the best explanation I have read on the subject so far. The author clearly tries to show why the inventor of the transistor would think to use PN junctions characteristics to make the BJT, and how important the minority carriers play in the whole process, something entirely neglected in most other descriptions. I truly feel now I understand how a transistor works, and can analyze not only the npn transistor but the pnp transistor as well, and get why pnp transistors are thought of as being hole injected versus electron injected for the npn.
Best Book for Electronic Circuit Design.......2004-10-19
Bottom Line: This is currently the best undergraduate textbook for a first course on electronic circuit design.
The authors give full, complete solutions to the end of chapter problems! This makes this text extremely good for self study. Sedra and Smith should consider doing this because all serious students will use a disciplined approach to learning and benefit greatly from this; you either learn how to design the circuits or you do not. The solutions are excellent. *I do not, however, give this book a great review simply because there are solutions.* This book is simply written better than the other available books.
As I write this, there are three other good textbooks on the market that compete well against this one. However, this book stands out in that it actually talks to you as if you are an intelligent student; other books read like a data sheet or a dry manual.
This book emphasizes design and intuition without sacrificing rigor, but it is not a cookbook. It is for those serious about designing electronic circuits and understanding why a particular design path should be chosen over others.
It is less encyclopedic than Microelectronic Circuits by Sedra and Smith but has better explanations on how to design circuits; Sedra and Smith is good for reference, examples, and the analysis of the said circiuts. Electronic Circuit Design by Comer is more brief than this text, presents the fundamentals, but does not contain enough detail and intuitive design procedures. Microelectronic Circuit Design by Jaeger is the most systematic, has the best examples, and very good examples of analysis and design procedures. However, the book by Jaeger fails to do what this book does -- bridge the path between real-world design procedures and textbook circuit specifications for designs.
All in all, all the said books are good books. However, I believe this one is better than the popular Sedra and Smith textbook and could be supplemented by the Jaeger book as a solid way of learning.
This is definitely the clearest, most lucid book on electronic circuit design I have read to date.
good book for design.......2004-04-12
I'm currently an undergraduate electrical engineering student at the University of California at Davis. While no design circuits classes are easy, I give this book a high rating because it is somewhat easier to read and understand than other circuits books I've come across in my time as a student. There are enough examples so that the student can figure out what's going on if the teacher is sufficient.
Book Description
Details infallible techniques for designing electronic hardware to withstand severe thermal environments. Using both SI and English units throughout, it presents methods for the development of various reliable electronic systems without the need of high-speed computers. It also offers mathematical modeling applications, using analog resistor networks, to provide the breakup of complex systems into numerous individual thermal resistors and nodes for those who prefer high-speed digital computer solutions to thermal problems.

Great examples and solved problems.......2002-04-17
Many, many practical problems described and solved in detail concerning packaging, PCB layout, housings, forced and non-forced air cooling. Great diagrams and tables of materials, given in both metric and English. Excellent book for the practical engineer to understand methods to cool PCB components.
Missing a lot for electronic packaging engineers.......2000-11-24
As a mechanical engineer who designs packaging for electronic equipment (telecommunications systems) I am rather disappointed in this book. There are basically two chapters that are useful while the rest are intended for aerospace applications. Fine, aerospace is a "sexier" application; but with the large number of engineers (ever growing) now looking at trying to keep 15W ASICs cool while avoiding EMC issues and/or manufacturing problems this book misses the boat.
Anyone who has taken the TTI course (Dick Leatherman) or one of the other professional institutes around North America won't get anything from this textbook since it simply captures what's in your notes. For everyone else just wondering about this book - it isn't worth the money.
The negatives: - the units (US imperial) are only useful in the US. The rest of the engineering world intelligently uses SI... - only two sections that are applicable to packaging engineering or other non-aerospace. - outdated technology. - no details on design fundamentals of cooling units (fans, blowers) - only two references to acoustic noise in the entire book! This is inexcusable for electronic equipment! - no discussion of integrating EMC solutions with thermal solutions.
Not recommended unless you like shelfware...
