Simply the best of the best........2007-10-11
No matter how much or how little you know about power electronics,
fundamentals of Power Electronics by Erickson & Maksimoviac is the bible on power. Thorough, extremely well written full of references when you need to go deeper into any subject. Excellent problems with every chapter
and very well organized
Excellent, full of examples, easy to follow.......2006-09-20
This book is one of the best, most thorough and well explained textbooks I have encountered in the past 5 years of school. The authors, one of whom is teaching my course, present their explanations in a way that is both thorough and accessible. This is not a cookbook by any means - it is a very solid, detailed foundation for power electronics, and doesn't gloss over the important concepts like other books in the field. If you're just looking for a reference book with equations, circuits, and tables, this isn't for you. However, if you're looking for a text to study and understand in detail, you'll be right at home.
This book, when read and studied regularly, is very easy to follow and concepts are driven-home with solid examples. Very well done.

Lots of information with some open ended information.......2004-04-08
I would agree with the other reviewer that this is not a "how to" book. The book approaches the subject from an academic viewpoint. The reader is expected to fill in between the lines with previous experience. It appears that the authors, professors as U of C, supplement the text with worked out examples for their students. I would recomend it to people already versed in the subject and want more information.I found it for half price and this makes it worth buying as a reference.
Execellent Book.......2004-03-06
First off, this book is NOT a cookbook. It will not tell you how to design a power supply for a specific application. But this is not the books purpose. This book is written for those who wish to understand in depth knowledge of power conversion. It is written as a text book. If the reader took the time to understand what is written (and it is written well) then the person would be able to design a power supply for any application using any topolgy. It teaches you the first principles of power conversion in order for you to apply it. Out of all my power electronic books this is my favorite book by far. If you are a power supply designer this book is a must.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book .......2005-04-09
In this book, the ideas and formulas are well presented to the readers. Notations are very consistent throughout the entire book. I have enjoyed reading this book.
Excellent.......2004-03-25
This is the best textbook I've ever read. The mix of theory and practice, examples and math, and the ordered introduction of concepts flows so well it reads like a treasure quest. Everything has its place, and the place is known - you just have to follow the signs and keep an eye out for those which are subtler than others, just to keep things alive and interesting. It's indicative of the clarity of thinking and broad sweep of this work that you would refer to it (I do and other students I know as well), for other subject matter such as communications, linear algebra, digital filters, probability and control theory. The homework problems are not just a series of one-liners as in most graduate level text books, but well-marked road maps addressing points discussed in the text and opening up new possibilities. The computer projects are very well commented and the results analysed. The language is concise yet fluid, and there are extremely few typos of any kind. This is a very, very high quality work.
Just what I needed.......2004-02-05
I work on 802.11b and 802.11a/OFDM modems and was looking for some kind of coherent text on decision feedback equalization and other tracking schemes when I stumbled upon this book. I'm deep into chapter three and I can already draw the following conclusions.
There are two things that make this book really great.
1) The teaching style. Besides having a wonderful way with words, the author uses plenty of subtle teaching principles that help in the understanding of the material like frequent repetition of the main concepts and slowly building up examples over different sections inside each chapter.
2) Content !!!! Its hard to assimilate abstract material like estimation theory without at the end having some type of useful application or algorithm to show for. The author's examples and computer projects on channel estimation, channel equalization, maximum ratio combining and Rake receivers are very popular building blocks for a variety of modems. It is very motivating to know that after labouring through the chapter the authors feels that you are now ready to understand decision feedback equalizers and so he presents you with a nice DFE computer project.
Difficult topics require competent teaching approaches and that is exactly what you will find in this book.
The only thing that would make this book even better would be a very brief introductory chapter on statistics and linear algebra. So if you are going through the book and you want to quickly revisit the definition of covariance or hermetian transpose there is one centralized section that has all the useful mathematical tools nicely listed.
As a practising engineer, I highly recommend this book.
Andreas S.
A True Masterpiece.......2003-10-07
This book is a true masterpiece. It contains the most complete treatment, theoretical and practical, of adaptive filtering that I've ever seen and I've seen just about every book on this topic on the market. In addition to the detialed theoretical derivations, this book is rich with numerous design examples and computer projects with provided matlab code. This equips the reader with proper tools to quickly understand the concepts and put them to practice with relative ease. I highly recommend this book to anyone serious about understanding adaptive filters.
A good book........2003-10-01
For all those of us, working in beamforming or OFDM or equalization or noise control, who find Haykin's writing uninspiring, Sayed's work has all the elegance of Prof Kailath's pedagogical style. This is one scrumptious intellectual meal. Every extant variation of the LMS and RLS algorithms is detailed, and some histroical context provided. The mathematical background needed or assumed is rudimentary. The Matlab projects are extensive in scope - yet, like most Matlab sources, they will take work in understanding their nuances.

Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2006-04-24
This book is very good for understanding some basic circuits concepts, but it does not discuss topics like sequential switching, unboudned response. But overall, I would highly recommend this book.
Very Understandable First Book on Electric Circuits.......2006-02-04
Since the reviews for most of the other first Circuit Analysis books I could find were fairly uniform in their negative opinion on the understandability of those books, I was worried about this book. But, since the reviews of the previous version were very good, I thought I'd give it a try. Basically, I'm very impressed with it. Since I'm working through the book on my own without any peers or professors available to clarify things, the book I use HAS to be readable. This one is. The authors clearly explain almost everything (there are a few minor omissions of (non-core) material that the authors consider to be Intuitively Obvious to the Most Casual Observer (i.e., stuff they thought everyone would have run into from everyday life)). Within each section of each chapter, they immediately follow every concept with several Examples showing how to work with the material and Practice problems for the reader to do. So, if you don't immediately understand the theory, there are several applications available to help you along. At the end of the chapter, the book includes:
- A Summary of the material covered.
- Answered Review Questions.
- About 100 Exercises. These are broken up into sections so you know which ones require what material. The odd ones are answered at the back of the book.
- Comprehensive Exercises which use all the material covered.
In the Preface, the authors describe the book as:
"...[W]ritten for a two-semester or three-quarter course in linear circuit analysis.... It is broadly divided into three parts. Part 1, consisting of Chapters 1 to 8, is devoted to dc circuits.... Part 2, which contains Chapter 9 to 14, deals with ac circuits.... Part 3, consisting of Chapters 15 to 19 is devoted to advanced techniques for network analysis.... [T]he main prerequisites... are physics and calculus. A very important asset of this text is that ALL the mathematical equations and fundamentals of physics needed by the student are included in the text."
From what I can see, that's a very good description of the book.
The only negatives I can find in the book are all minor. Occasionally, there's a wrong answer (AFAIK). There are also a couple of cases where the authors put new information into the exercises instead of covering it in the text. Slightly more serious is that in some cases the Example and Sample problems focus on problems with certain attributes. But, the Exercises will then focus on problems with entirely different (unexplained) attributes. It takes some work to translate these into the material covered in the section. Also, I'd have preferred having Exercises at the end of each section instead of clumped together at the end of the chapter. The end-of-chapter Exercises should be limited to the Review Questions and Comprehensive Exercises. It would also have been nice if McGraw Hill had provided a PDF version of the book on their web site (ARIS) for registered users (there's a registration code in the front of the book).
My biggest complaint is probably regarding the tools used in the book: PSpice (a circuit simulator), KCIDE (an integrated design environment for circuit analysis), and MATLAB (a symbolic manipulator and solver). PSpice 9.1 used throughout the text of the book. Unfortunately, KCIDE uses PSpice 10.0. From what I can find on the web, the two PSpice versions don't play nicely together. So, you really have a choice of using the version of the tool used in the book or using the version required by another tool used in the book. MATLAB, unlike PSpice and KCIDE, doesn't have a free student version. As a replacement for it, I used Maxima (available from SourceForge).
Still, all the complaints are minor. I found the book to be very readable and rate it at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.

Customer Reviews:
Ripoff - Just a re-arranged version of previous editions.......2006-05-10
I use Floyd's books to teach electronics courses in a community college. They're OK books, but Floyd is one of those writers that just has to write new editions all the time, which forces students/instructors to buy new books. My students were just told by the bookstore that they can't return they're 6th edition for buyback, and they will now be forced to buy the 7th edition to complete the 2nd semester of their studies.
DC and AC circuits are basically the same now as they were twenty years ago. There is no need for constant revisions in such a slowly changing field. I have seen Floyd's books change over the years - the content is about the same, but each new edition just seems to be a bunch of re-arrangements and added fluff (like which calculator keys to hit, even though the pictured steps don't work on many calculators).
The small changes needed to a textbook, such as adding new Multisim files, should be done on a companion website, not in a new edition. The new editions seem like a gimmick to increase sales. I will be switching to a different author for future courses.
A good intoductory book to electric circuits.......1999-04-17
I found this book well written in a manner that was easily understood for new comers to the subject. The chapters are arranged in a proggresive manner compounding everything as it goes along. In my eyes, this book is a great way to learn the fundimentals of electic ciciuts.

ASIN: 0073048356 |
Book Description
Fundamentals of Electric Circuits, 2e is intended for use in the introductory circuit analysis or circuit theory course taught in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology departments. The main objective of this book is to present circuit analysis in a clear, easy-to-understand manner, with many practical applications to interest the student.
Each chapter opens with either historical sketches or career information on a subdiscipline of electrical engineering. This is followed by an introduction that includes chapter objectives. Each chapter closes with a summary of the key points and formulas.
The authors present principles in an appealing and lucid step-by-step manner, carefully explaining each step. Important formulas are highlighted to help students sort out what is essential and what is not. Many pedagogical aids reinforce the concepts learned in the text so that students get comfortable with the various methods of analysis presented in the text.
Customer Reviews:
Mr. Sadiku delivers again!.......2006-11-10
I've been familiar with the books from Sadiku on the subject of Electromagnetics (I didn't know about his Circuits book until recently). His writing style greatly facilitates the introduction to otherwise cumbersome topics. I'd highly recommend this volume if you want to learn about electric circuits. The book is very easy to read and the examples are very illustrative. Very good all around.
Electric Circuits.......2006-03-04
The book presents material very clearly. There are many examples to pratice.
Please do not refer to the book as the 3rd Printing. It is only the 2nd Edition. Very confusing.
third edition is out!.......2005-12-17
This gorgeous Electrical Circuits textbook is now in its third edition - And even more attractive now. The layout is enhanced, and the presentation actually flows even more beautifully with the math. I enjoyed the first two editions - but this one is quite innovative in the introduction of KCIDE (knowledge capturing integrated design environment), a software designed to reinforce all the engineering concepts presented in the book as well as the problem solution process. I hope that more of my teachers will start appreciating the novel design of this book.
Beginning electrical engineering.......2005-09-26
It's a good read so far. Understandable with tons of examples and practice problems. It is for the first circuit analysis course. It is not for beginning digital. If you work the problems you will learn the basics towards being a EE or good tech. It is calculus based, but the math is held down to a tolerable level.

Good book, with some minor problems.......2006-06-28
Overall this is a really great book with lots of examples and good problems, however my complaint is that some of the problems haven't been covered in the examples and so they are too difficult to solve. For instance, in the chapter on node voltages, none of the examples covers floating voltage sources that have other components like resistors in series with them, yet a number of the problems involve such floating voltage sources. I had to refer to the Schaum's Outline of Basic Circuit Analysis (another very good book, btw) to find an example problem for that.
If you're looking for books on electric circuits, however, I would definitely recommend this one along with the Schaum's Outline book I mentioned above.
Great.......2006-01-20
This is a decent start for novice engineers. Unlike other texts on the same subject it has very effective methodology of teaching the very basic concepts of electric circuits. A bulk of solved examples is there to help you understand techniques of circuit analysis. It really soothed me when I was suffering from "circuit phobia". This text is highly recommended by me for beginners.
very satisfied.......2005-08-10
I am very satisfied with Alexander's book. Compared with any other book in this field, the others actually don't really stand a chance. Why? Because you can actually teach from this book EFFECTIVELY. The pedagogy works here, whereas many other authors have unfortunately failed. The communication works; and the chemistry works too. I think we engineers really need to realize this important issue. And always try to improve.
Good material.......2005-07-23
This one book ist the best Engineer book for me since my undergraduate years. The great difference between this one and others are the very illustrativ problems. Charles Alexander is somewhat well known as an engineering educator - I could very feel this from the book's layout.
very useful.......2005-07-16
This is probably the most useful engineering textbook I have on my shelf. Not only is it very easy to understand, but as a reference, I like it even better! The math is lucid, yet never overwhelming, and in addition, the problems are quite interesting. I highly recommend this book, rather than Nilsson's. (I think one of the Authors of this book has written/edited an EE handbook as well, which I am less familiar with. Maybe I'd check that one out too)

Customer Reviews:
an ok book.......2006-02-23
So far the book has been ok in my machines and power fundamentals course, mostly though because my instructor is completely useless in this field. Some things I have seen before and the book offers a more thorough explanation of concepts although the approach in the problems is not usually the one most easily seen by me. That being said, I do praise the book for its numerous examples and detail. The Matlab examples don't really make use of its abilities but they're still helpful.
power system.......2001-07-18
very practicle book specialy because power system fundamentals and machinery brought first time in nice manner on the table.chapman has used his expertise and brought the material in the form of book.

This excellent circuits textbook is still available as follows:
Sergio Franco, Electric Circuits Fundamentals,
Oxford University Press, ISBN Number: 0195136136
In my opinion, this is one of the finest circuits textbooks for undergraduate electrical engineering students currently in print. Dr. Franco thoroughly and clearly covers the fundamentals of electric circuits. In addition, to provide students with physical picture as to how circuits work, he includes several interesting applications of circuits throughout the text. Dr. Franco thoroughly covers operational amplifiers, ac resonance, and complex frequency, subjects often slighted in newer texts on electric circuits fundamentals. The technical quality and writing style of this text are excellent. Finally, throughout the text there are essays/interviews on the electrical engineering profession; these will be helpful to students who are unsure about the electrical engineering profession as a career.
