Greater seller!.......2007-09-21
My book arrived in quick time and in excellent condition. I would not hesitate to do business with this seller again. Many thanks!
Not terribly exciting, but it gets the job done........2007-05-12
If you plan to obtain a low-level A+ Certification, or simply wish to posses the knowledge necessary to do so, then this book is pretty much sufficient. Combined with it's sibling book, A+ Guide to Software, this book could allow one to become a relatively intermediate Windows-based PC technician. Then again, don't expect to walk away from these books an expert. A lot of technical details about troubleshooting are chucked up to common sense. The author often says things such as, "Ask questions and test for obvious errors." That's a given. But intense registry manipulation, command prompt maneuvering, and other areas of troubleshooting are barely explored. The book spends a lot of time explaining the fundamentals and technical stats of hardware. It doesn't spend a lot of time really diving into the realm of troubleshooting them.
The simplicity of the books makes them accessible to individuals who are not already very familiar with computer concepts. However, the simplicity makes them somewhat boring and unexciting to individuals with a considerable amount of computer experience. I found them useful for filling in small gaps that lingered due to many years of self-teaching.
The content of these books may not be advanced Systems Architecture, but it's still surprisingly beyond what the average user knows. I highly recommend these books for beginners who wish to break the barrier between being computer "noobs" and being fairly confident Windows-PC users and builders.

THIS IS AN INFORMATIVE BOOK.......2007-08-07
I purchased this to learn more about the field I am in. Its thorough and easy to navigate.
Get it!!.......2004-02-24
After 30 plus years in this field, I still have questions. This book answers them, in easy to understand motor shop talk. Between this book and "Electric Motor Repair" (Rosenberg and Hand), most questions will be answered.
Disappointed.......2002-04-05
I had this book on backorder for three months, eagerly anticipating new ideas, new methods of testing, and more. Having been in the electric motor industry, from being a motor repair journeyman in the US Navy to in-depth research into motor repair and testing at universities and for utilities, for about 20 years, I have seen major changes to the industry since the early 1980's.
The information in the book is the same old thing in a new cover. I see no difference between this book, previous books by the author, and my early 1950's copy of "Preventive Maintenance of Electrical Equipment" by Charles L Hubert. Basically, the book would make a great history lesson on testing from the early 1900's, while lacking in new test options that have come out over the past 25 years.
There are quite a few technical issues with the book. For instance, surge testing is related as an 'inductance-based test' which is incorrect. It is actually an impedance-based test.
While new instruments have been available for the past 25 years, that are affordable, none of those technologies are mentioned. And in one area, the author offers his opinions on new technologies and what they detect, but does not provide information to allow the reader or student to make their own decisions. For instance: "Uneven air gap - a test claim - can't be detected from the three leads of a three phase motor. (Although it isn't desirable, an uneven air gap won't destroy a motor's winding.)" - Whereas, air gap problems are detected by inductance, and impedance, because of changes to the electrical circuit (this author cannot change the laws of physics), and, while it has a minimal effect on the windings, it has a pronounced effect on the mechanics of the motor, which is why air gap is important when assembling motors, and when troubleshooting with vibration (eccentric rotor).
I am, to put it mildly, disappointed.

The product provided for me or any student all the information needed to successfully take both these test. Excellent!
Jodie719.......2007-08-08
Excellent resource for obtaining the Desktop certification. Will recommend this series to someone who is serious about becoming Microsoft certified for desktops. Thanks.
Helped me pass the exam.......2007-07-03
These books were easy to read. I loved the pullout fact sheets. I read through them just before the exams. I did both practice test in each book. I read the books cover to cover without confusion and I passed both exams on my first try.
XP Pro.......2007-01-03
These books are very good, and will help anyone who wants a Microsoft certification. Microsoft certifications help in obtaining high paying, quality jobs.
Good work for hte new exams........2004-09-22
Microsoft's release of the MCDST Certification has you taking 2 exams, 70-271 and 70-272.What you need is something to use as a final study tool and this set is just the right answer. What you have here is a fairly complete breakdown of the exam objective condensed for easy reading.
No technical manual is usually fun to read since the material is technical, however these 2 books are easy to follow and the reading level is set for the experience technician. Understand that manual(s) is a scaled down finer points set of text, and you will need other resources in order to pass the exam.
The 70-271 book was a little more informative and I found it had information that lapped over to the other exam. As with other EC2 manuals, there is the Cram sheet in front and the cd in the back. This set uses the Measure UP test engine, which could use a few updates and more questions as well as a way to up[date on the web.
Fixing the test engine is a minor draw back and this book should help in the final prep. Overall well put together and researched

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, practical handbook.......2005-08-09
This is a great, practical guide to EMI testing and troubleshooting. Includes basic fixes, utility of those fixes to resolve observed issue(s), and estimates regarding the improvement those fixes might provide. It also includes a section on in-house, "confidence" testing (without shelling out for test chamber and all of the expensive test equipment... though you'll still need some)
My background - BSEE, 15 yrs commercial and military experience. I think the text would be especially useful for Test, EMI and project engineers. It avoids deep derivation of formulae and would be useful to technicians and designers as well.
Good overall book.......2002-02-28
This book is by no means the definitive guide to EMC. The advance reader seeking such a book should consult Clayton's R. Paul book (Intro {yea right} to EMC). Nonetheless, for what it is, it is outstanding. The author covers in a general and simplified format a wide array of topics. What I most liked about the book was that the author address installations and other non-PCB related EMI issues. Basically, issues not covered by similar books that have a tendency to address only the PCB and its related IO.
Product Description
"Avionics Training" is the first book to explain avionics in simple terms, with over 400 illustrations in full color. It assumes no knowledge of electronics, uses no math, formulas or confusing abbreviations. The book explains the operation of 30 systems, how they relate to each other, how they're installed and troubleshooting techniques. This is a hands-on book that replaces theory with "hands-on" information. There are chapters on mounting instruments, preparing wires and connectors, running cables, installing antennas and other practical techniques. The book not only covers conventional avionics of the last 50 years, but the most recent technology, such as GPS, satellite communications, collision avoidance, the new transponders and electronic flight instruments (EFIS). "Avionics Training" was written because of new directions in the avionics industry. The demand today is for people with a "systems" understanding---which is required to find problems and replace faulty "black boxes." This is in contrast to people skilled in circuit theory who repair small components inside the box. The need for such skills is disappearing because the new computerized avionics must be sent back to the manufacturer for repair. The result is increasing demand for troubleshooting on the airplane while it's on the flightline, especially as more electronics spread through almost every onboard system. Already adopted as a text by teaching institutions, this book is recommended for any type of aviation technician, pilots, newcomers entering the avionics field, and marketing and manufacturing personnel needing a broader knowledge of the avionics industry.
Customer Reviews:
Troubleshooting Section was pathetic.......2006-07-21
This book purports to cover avionic systems, Installation, and troubleshooting. The "systems" section does a good job of covering the systems it does cover, communications and some navigation systems, and that's about all it does do. It does not cover anything related to the fuel, power, airdata, flight control or other systems of an aircraft that are also part of the "avionic" systems. It is obvious that the author has never worked as an avionics technician and views the "systems" of an aircraft from the point of view of a small aircraft pilot. The Installation section was severely lacking and the one-page "troubleshooting" section was a complete waste of paper as it contained none of the methodolgy used to isolate system problems in today's complex corporate and commercial aircraft. The book should be renamed to more accurately portray what it actually covers; "Comm/Nav systems." The current title is misleading and I was very disappointed with this book, considering its purchase price.
Great content, dozens of typos.......2006-01-15
This is a great primer if you are a student of or have general interest in airplane avionics. I throughly enjoyed learning about the technologies behind DME, VOR, Comms, GPS, etc. The many, many typos throughout the book lead me to believe this is a self-published book and the author didn't want to pay for a copy editor. If you can get beyond the errors (primarily gramatical), this is well worth a read.
Book Description
The new Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST) credential proves that you have the skills to successfully support end users and successfully troubleshoot desktop environments running on Windows XP. MCDST candidates must pass two core exams (70-271 and 70-272). The 70-271 exam, when combined with the 70-272 (the application exam for desktop support technicians), validates that a candidate can successfully answer (or escalate) all calls from end users. Co-written by best-selling author Dan Balter, the MCDST 70-271 Exam Cram 2 gives readers the essential information they need to know to pass this exam, focusing on exactly what they need to know. This book can be used as a sole study guide for those experienced with Windows XP or it is the perfect supplement guide for more comprehensive training materials, instructor-led classes, and/or computer-based training.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good.......2007-05-08
I passed the test so I guess that means the book worked. It was actually supplemental material. My first choice is always Sybex. This is a decent book, it went too much into the Remote Installation for what I had on the test but the test may be different for you.
Good, but problematic...........2006-09-23
I just passed my 70-271 exam and I do believe this book was an important factor in my score. However this book is problematic.
1.) The MeasureUp practice exam questions are 50 of the same questions found in the Microsoft Press book for the same exam. But that book has 261 more questions than this one.
2.) The questions in the book are far more difficult than necessary and many are more appropriate for the MCSA/MCSE exam 70-270.
3.) There are too many typographic errors to name. The major ones have been mentioned by other reviewers.
4.) There is no information on service pack 2.
I intend on using my MCDST credentials as an elective exam for the MCSA, so I appreciate the difficulty of the questions but by attempting to attain an 85% to 90% on the practice exams in the back of this book I had thoroughly convinced myself that I would fail the test and was very close to rescheduling it. I did not, and I passed my test with more than 200 point over the minimum score.
To this books credit I have found the information very useful in my job. I have received several calls from users with processor affinity problems or with 16 bit program errors that I know how to solve immediately because of the high standards set by the questions in this book. I am, therefore, very satisfied with my purchase.
Don't use this book as a primary study guide.......2006-07-30
There's a lot of unnecessary info in this book that you won't even see on the exam. The practice questions in the book are way too wordy and confusing. Exam Cram has helped me in the past, but not this time.
Don't buy this book, it's awful........2005-12-12
I believe my email to the editor explains it all. I have copied and pasted it below.
Mr. Tittel,
I have been a huge fan of your Exam Cram books for the last few years and they have helped me pass my A+, Network+, and CCNA certifications. Currently I am working of my MCDST certification and bought your books expecting the same standards your other books hold. Unfortunately, your Exam 70-271 Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Windows XP operating System is not only a disgrace to your line of books, but to you as the editor. I have to ask; did you even read the book or edit it? There are too many spelling and grammatical errors to even list in this book. Many times it should say drive, and instead it says driver or vice versa. You have many of the wizards name's wrong, such as on page 200 first line under Migrating User Settings with the File Settings and Transfer Wizard it says "The File Settings and Transfer (FAST) Wizard." The funny thing is it's the File and Settings Transfer Wizard, otherwise FAST makes no sense the way it is printed and if that's not bad enough on page 201 you have a screenshot of the wizard showing it's correct name. The questions you ask in this book also are horrendous because they contradict what is true or just make no sense. Here is an example of a contradiction. Earlier in the book it says Windows XP can't be upgraded from Windows 95, this is true, but then in question 6 on page 213 it says "After upgrading a group of computers running Windows 95 to Windows XP Professional." See something wrong there? Here is an example of a question making no sense. Look at question 23 on page 336. The question asks for the Power User group and the Administrator group, so logically and correctly the answer should be A, but no you have it as answer C which is the same exact thing as A but leaves out the Administrator group so it would be wrong. In conclusion I must say this was one of the most poorly written and poorly edited books I have ever read. So please, revise this book immediately and get any remaining ones of the shelves because most people are furious about this, you should check out the reviews on Amazon.com and elsewhere.
Good book, relevant material.......2005-09-15
Overall it was a good book withs lots of relevant material. I actually learned some things about XP that I was not already aware of. I haven't taken the test yet, but with the included Cheat Sheet and CDROM, I think I will be well prepared.
