Book Description
Cabling is one of the fastest changing technologies today, and this updated book addresses the latest developments in premises cabling, including wireless networks. The "hands on" processes used in the installation of data, voice, and video cabling are observed using minimal theory and liberal practical advice. A logical format that separates key concepts into specific sections minimizes confusion between the unique installation practices among the different technologies. Copper cabling is first discussed, including coax, telephone, and Cat 3 and Cat 5 LAN cabling. A section devoted to fiber optics then follows. Within each section, discussions progress from the basics to components, installation, and testing to assist in the development of individual skills.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Introduction.......2006-07-12
This book is easy to read and covers most topics in a logical easy to follow format. I am a architect and needed a good starting point for understanding cabling installation and various types of low voltage wiring systems (voice, data, CCTV, security). The author emphasizes that this book is meant for practical application, but he does provides good coverage of basic theories without being like an engineering textbook. The discussion of how fiber-optics are transmitted was very helpful. If one already knows the basics, this book may not be useful but I found it a good overview of the subject.
Data, Voice, and Video Cabling.......2001-11-21
Very dissappointing. The video cabling section didn't discuss splitters, taps, attenuators, modulators, signal loss and many other areas of video installation. The other sections were somewhat better but also lacking in depth. I've learned more from reading the appendixes in the Leviton Catalog.
Excellently Writtten.......2001-11-02
I found this book to be written in a way that can be understood easily by the common "Joe". I've read many books on this subject and found that I wish I would have started with this one to begin with. It lays out the foundations of the infrastructure field in a descriptive and understandable way. Excellent choice.
An Instructors reveiw.......2000-12-21
I have been teaching fibre optics (Canadian Spelling for fiber) and communications for a number of years now, and I have read and used most every book available on the subject. I have been able to get something pertinent out of all of them. I have been using "Data, Voice and Video Cabling for some time now. The majority of the time my students are offered these books, not as a requirement of the course, but as a an option. (They are supplied during the course free of charge.)
Recently a class involved in an extensive training course asked about Homework. I suggested reading the issued text books by the next morning. (Big mistake) The next AM, I was inundated with questions and ideas about communications cabling. Further, I sold 12 of the VD&V books immediately. Most of my people had spent many hours reading over and reveiwing all required reading. These students were all eminently qualified instructors in a Communications, train-the-trainer course.
Many people assume that they can learn everything from books without the benifit of formal instruction. An unfortunate mistake. I have to deal with this attitude on a daily basis. However if you want to be close to this assumption, try this book. Always keep an open mind and try to refrain from the negativity.
An excellent and helpful book.......2000-12-21
This book is probably the best book on communications cabling I have seen. It covers copper cabling and fiber in different sections which makes it less confusing. It has lots of good pictures on how to actually install the cables.

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat Obsolete.......2002-02-08
Many portions of this book (the 2nd edition) are obsolete. This is due to a new TIA cabling standard (568-B) which was ratified right around the time of this book's release in the Spring of 2001. BICSI has since released a 3rd edition in 3-ring-binder format, but McGraw-Hill has not as of yet released the hardcover of the 3rd edition. If you plan on buying this book, either get the 3rd edition through BICSI or wait for McGraw-Hill to publish a hardcopy of the 3rd edition. But before you buy, read on...
Other than the now obsolete portions of this book, it is accurate, but without many exercises or detailed labs in this volume, I'd have to agree with other reviewers here and call it "lacking detail." Perhaps a lab-book is where all the details went. I have also noticed that this book goes so far out of its way to be "vendor-neutral" that it sometimes uses terms that almost nobody in the industry would recognize. This edition also fails to mention some new cabling innovations that have been around since early 2000.
Finally, just one point of interest here; the primary reviewer who has give this book a 5-star rating has a vested interest in the book as well. He is listed in the acknowledgements section of this book, so take those comments with a grain-of-salt.
Obsolete Information.......2001-03-23
This book contains old and soon to be obsolete information. Another reviewer says in his review "Its my understanding that an update is in the works and it can only get better". He is right. According to BICSI, they have written and will soon be selling a new version of this book. But this is the old book! I purchased this book now I find out that a new version is about to be released. I can't believe they are selling old book and passing them off as new material.
Book is dissapointing.......2001-03-23
I was expecting a lot when I purchased this book. I have been in the cable installation industry for over 25 years. I was looking for a book to teach communication cabling installation to new employees and to other individuals thinking of entering the cabling installation industry. The book has two major problems. First, the book provides cabling specifications that are based on old TIA cabling standards. BICSI publishes other manuals that have more up to date information. Therefore, this book contradicts the latest TIA cabling standards and other information that is used by everyone in the cabling industry. Second, most of the book's content is filled with bulleted points organized into lists. I assume that these bulleted point must be important but there is virtually no meaningful expanation of what these bulleted points mean and why they are important. As a result, I read lots of pages but didn't learn any useful information from this book. If you purchase this book and think you will become a cabling expert, you won't!
Awesome Book.......2001-03-17
This book is a 'must have' for persons that are involved in the installation of Telecommunications cabling in comercial buildings. This book is probably the most complete assembling of pertinant information of its kind. I highly recommend this valuable resource.
Great Manual.......2001-03-14
I have reviewed this technical manual from its inception in 1996 to date. This is the second revision and is much more inclusive than the first edition. It is a "must have" for each installer/technician in the industry. Strongly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-02-09
This is an easy read if your in the business... Lots of standards of installation.
Not for the Do-it-Yourself(er).......2003-06-15
This book contains a wealth of valuable information, but it is not very accessible to a non-professional. It reads very much like a text book and might be a good resource if you really need to know the nuances of every type of cable needed in a Residential Structured Cabling System.
I purchased this book in hopes that it would have a little more Do-it-yourself information, but was disappointed. The largest problem in my opinion was the quality of the illustrations. There were plenty of line drawings, but they lacked detail and utility. It went into great detail on how to work with optical fiber but left it entirely to your imagination of how to work with Network, Television and Telephone cable.
The book is riddled with duplicated knowledge, (several sections are even repeated several times in the same chapter) and makes references to other publications that a home builder or electrician may have.
If you are looking for good resource on how to build your own home network/CATV/telephone structured cable system, look elsewhere. If you are familiar with the electrical or telecommunications fields and need a good reference it might suit your needs.
Residential Cabling.......2002-02-23
I attended the Pilot Training course of the same name taught by BICSI. The book very closely follows whatis in the course, and is required reading if you intend to take the BICSI exam. As technical books go, it is very easy to read. I would recomend this bookto anybody looing to get into the Residential Cabling Market.
Book Description
There is no better introduction to premises cabling, its components, and its varieties than this basic yet technically accurate presentation of structured cabling systems for both business and home. Now in its Third Edition, Premises Cabling has been updated and revised to reflect the latest developments in the industry, such as the Augmented Category 6 UTP cable, the 10GBASE-T Ethernet standard, application-oriented data center cabling, industrial cabling, wireless networks, and more. With the growing importance of standards-based systems, this book is built around various standards for generic cabling systems, such as TIA/EIA-569B for commercial buildings and -570B for homes.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Beginners or Experts.......2000-12-13
I have struggled writing Premises Cabling books when I worked for a Mid-state PA Co. Mr. Sterling brings an understanding to the subject matter that enbabled me to correctly help the audience that I was writing for and trying to reach with training information about cabling options. His expert guidance would enable both the novice and the expert to gain a deeper understanding and help them with their job and career. This is not an easy subject, yet Mr. Sterling makes it a pleasure to read and refer back to time and time again. Thanks for taking the time to put together such an informative and interesting book.
The worst book of its kind for this topic.......2000-04-27
I once owned this book and do not recommend it to anyone for any reason. I have several books of this topic and this book is by far the worst of the bunch. No details on planning, design, installation or support of network cabling. Just some worthless pictures on how the network cabling looks and works. If there is any redeeming factor to this book it almost shows how to crimp a RJ45 plug onto the end of a wire, but almost doesn't count and its not redeeming for this book.
I sold this book at an internet auction and I was glad to get rid of it for postage. Do not buy.
Excellent choice for LAN network support folks.......1998-06-12
I'm a non-engineer who began supporting LAN network infrastructure a couple of years ago. I've read a couple of other books on premises cabling and they all pretty much tell you the same kind of things, basic rules for cabling, tips, do's and don'ts. However, this book delves a little deeper into the electrical properties and gives you some needed insight into why certain practices are better than others. This is critical as the newer technologies are deployed and the tolerances of Cat5 cable begin to be stressed. It helps you cut through the gobbledy-gook of the marketeers, also.
Book covers all the basics, why structured cable, properties of Cat5 and fiber, connectors, OSI model, cross-connects, installation techniques, certification, etc.
Only criticism I have is that it was published in 1996 and that a new edition would be nice, especially after the Cat6 standards are finalized.
Best thing I can say is that after borrowing a friend's copy for about 6 months, I decided to take the plunge and buy my own.

Cabling Handbook, The (2nd Edition).......2005-09-06
I received my book in record time and it has turned out to be a very rewarding purchase.
A good review reference to Telecom other than cabling........2001-11-18
If you are a new comer to the telecommunications and want to read on an overview go ahead you are in the right place. There isn't much information here about cabling, nothing ordinary. For cabling information you may want to check out James Trulove's LAN Wiring.
Cabling Handbook- or Not!.......2001-10-13
This second edition of Mr. Vacca's Cabling book is a big improvement over the first edition published in 1999.
This book contains a lot of good practical advise on telecommunications cabling, probably drawn from the author's practical experiences. Designing Cabling systems and cable installation sections are pretty good. However most of this information is also available in BICSI Telecommunications Distribution Methods Manuals, which you should already have a copy if you are working in the telecom field. I feel like a cabling book should have a lot more detail on cabling than topics like Virtual area networks, VPNs, Wireless future, Fiber optic electronics (instead, more info on Fiber cable installations here would be helpful). There are lot better books in those technical areas and you wander why a cabling book should include them. Also, a minimal amount of information is given on the testing cables; so I believe you would be doing better by reading ANSI/EIA/TIA-568-B.2 and B.3 standards. BICSI Telecommunications Cabling Manual for some more details on the subject. If you are planning to install a telecommunication system in an industrial facility and are not familiar with manufacturing environment please look for much more advice than you find here.
A very complete handbook.......2001-04-16
This is a very complete handbook from John Vacca, both for the beginner, in terms of explaining the various technologies, and for the expert, in understanding the complete picture.
Technical, practical, and completely readable.......2001-04-11
The second edition of John Vacca's Cabling Handbook goes even further beyond cabling than the first edition did.
I found the extensive information on wireless connectivity particularly informative, and the chapter on its futures (Bluetooth, UMTS, and practical implications) was eye-opening and fascinating.
On a more mundane level, fiber optic technology and implementation were explained such that I have a far better understanding than before. And I recommend reading through the very practical steps in the chapter on Implementation Plan Development. These will certainly reduce the problems encountered in network installations - physical, technical, and scheduling. Been there, done that...
Being software oriented, I have often kept my distance from such hardware technologies as cabling. However, John Vacca explains it all in a reader-friendly style which makes perfect sense!

Unlike other books which treat the topic theoretically, this guide clearly explains exactly what to do. It includes extensive and invaluable data charts on currently available wire, cable, and fiber, and covers all major A/V interconnection solutions.
Customer Reviews:
Good For Facility Planners.......2002-11-13
I bought this book before wiring up a major radio studio facility. I read the whole thing cover-to-cover. The parts about audio wiring and audio cables were well worth the money. I would recommend this book to audio engineers. In fact, this book was recommended to ME by a fellow radio engineer!
The sensible book on cabling you're looking for.......2000-05-26
It is so hard to find anything useful written on the top of audio cabling, especially when so much of it is marketing hype written by people whose understanding of electrical and audio engineering seems to have been derived from a careful study of science fiction.
