Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great way to get an alternative view on controls.......2007-05-18

Ellis has made a fantastic book on PID and similar control loops. He takes a very different tact than most controls books -- he writes with a voice similar to a handbook, but delivers enough content to compete with more traditional textbook-style controls books. It is light on the math in comparison, but I don't find myself wanting for more math.

I do a lot of controls design, consulting, and teaching. I recommend this book often and find that people that buy it uniformly track me down and thank me for the recommendation. I can't think of much higher praise for this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good tutorial of basic control system.......2002-06-23

This is a really good book that simplified control system for the real world. Most text spend too much time on theory and analysis and end the discussion with a bunch of equations and graphs without explaining how to implement the design. This book covers both analog and digital control, and lets you download a software from the author's web site. This software, ModelQ, lets you play with various parameters so you can see how the system behaves when it is not optimized.

One drawback with the book is it only covers PID control and its variants, but doesn't cover state-space control. While state-space control may be considered "overkill" by many control engineers, state-space is used in industry. The decision to use state-space is often not in the hands of individual engineers, so it may not be an option to ignore state-space. It would be nice if Mr. Ellis could cover state-space in his next edition of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on modern control systems.......2000-11-20

This book is a great guide to problems and solutions for modern control systems. Many text will have page after page of formulas with little link to the real world of control system design. Mr. Ellis provides answers to the problems faced by todays engineers.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for practicing engineers!.......2000-11-06

George Ellis does a great job of bridging the gap between academia and industy in Control System Design Guide 2nd Edition. This book gives the practicing engineer the information necessary to put into practice much of the theory that he/she learned in the university. The book primarily focuses on motion control and modeling of motion systems. If you are working on a control system and would like to make sure you get the performance you need, you should buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars New edition available.......2000-10-18

Please note that a new edition of this book was published in May 2000 and is also available on this website. The book has been greatly expanded and is receiving great reviews. The book is still entitled Control System Design Guide 2nd edition.

5 out of 5 stars Get Writing With Get to the Point.......2007-03-15

Get to the Point provides a wonderful, practical, and useful guide to writing. I recommend it highly.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother with it.......2006-02-12

Elizabeth Danziger in her book Get to the Point attempts to offer readers a game plan to reduce stress and anxiety in an effort to write more effective memos, letters, and e-mails. Danziger is the fonder of WorkTalk, an organization dedicated to improving the communication of individuals and organizations, & she has written for popular magazines such as: Readers Digest and Family Circle. In this book, Danziger offers solid advice on how to deal with writer's block, & in some chapters, she gives visual checklists to help guide readers in the writing process.

However, readers will find the book unfocused; for example, in Chapter2 entitled: Planning your Writing, she has too many headings & subheading; one heading is: Analyze your reader before you start, which is about a half a page, then on the next page, she talks about how to connect with your reader using a 3 level formula. Yet, no where in the 3 level formula does she go into any detail, then jumps to a topic called "hot buttons" in which she offers little examples of how to determine the "hot buttons" of the writer's audience.

In addition to the lack of focus, you will find that the book is poorly organized. Some chapters have visual examples, and others do not. Chapter 6, Choose words Wisely, Chapter 7, Help for the Grammar Phobic, & Chapter 8 Mark my Punctuation should have all been combined as they deal with many of the same topics.

All in all, Danziger's book is a good example of a person that might be able to write magazine articles but does not have the ability to write a book. It's ironic that on the back of the book cover it says, "Get to the point! Is the only writing book you'll ever need" and I am saying this is the only book you should run from don't waste your money on this.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Thing Since Elements of Style.......2002-10-28

This book is great! Funny, easy to read, and phenomenally useful. Everyone should own one.

5 out of 5 stars Not for tweakers.......2007-03-04

But if you want a solid understanding of how everything works, so you can fix it, this is the single best book on the subject. It answers many of those those arcane questions that crop up when you're really digging into a problem. As many of us have learned, the error code is NOT a recipe for a repair. It is simply the place to start.

As an example, my F-250 4.9 started stalling when warm. I had also noticed an occasional gassy smell & my mileage had dropped noticeably. It also failed emissions on NOx. Later, I pulled a code pointing to the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT). Since the problem only occurs when the engine is fully warm, I checked that strategy & saw that the ECT is indeed involved in managing engine performance. Probst describes the effect of a low or high reading, provides a table of expected voltage and resistance values at specific temperatures, and the pin locations on the connector.

If the ECT isn't the exact problem, there's enough meat in this book to figure out what is.

Last time I had to take my car into Ford, I found I knew more about oxygen sensor operation than the service writer. It saved me $150.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever Written About Fords EEC-IV Compuer System.......2006-03-24

No matter what you want to do with the Ford EEC-IV computer (88-93) this is the book for you. This is a very indepth book that dosent just tell you how to do somthing but it also shows you why it does what it does and why it will do somthing else if you mess with it. He explains how everything works, from the sensors to the computer and then to the acutators, he explains how the work together and he writes very clearly so it is easy to understand and to put into action.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bang for the Buck!.......2005-09-17

If you have questions, or just need a very good understanding of the Ford EEC-IV Fuel Injection systems, this is the book for you. Don't waste your time or money on any other book. This one explains theory, real life problems, and the methods for tracking down a malfunction and correcting it. Also includes what is the best way to go about improving performance, and making the system adapt to performance improvements.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I had expected!!.......2003-03-10

After reading the reviews on Amazon and other sources I got the impression that Mr. Probst's book was "THE BOOK" to read for modification of the EEC-IV system on my Ford Truck.

I was very disappointed. 95% of the book was nothing more than a SIMPLIFIED discription of each component in the Ford and Mazda engine control system. Mr. Probst very strongly implied that people should not modify their engine control system.

I found Mr. Jeff Hartman's book "Fuel Injection: Installation, Performance Tuning, Modification" much more informative for technical information.

5 out of 5 stars Hats off to Mr Probst !!!.......2002-12-13

This book is topps! Mr Probst uses a friendly, easy to read format. I am now plagued with two problems on my truck, and thanks to this book, I understand quite a bit more. I am a do it yourselfer, self taught, and this book brings things to light. This has given me the tecnical data I need, as where other books are unclear or leave you hanging. This is not a book by any means, it's an investment.
Raise my rent, put another shrimp on the barbie mate, and thank God for simplicity!!

Susan Shankle and Barbara Melton have written a book that all parents, teachers, and other persons working with children should read! What sets this book apart from the rest is its ability to inform parents as to the "evil" and the good of the internet. As therapists who have worked with children affected by the internet, the authors are able to give powerful insight into the negative and positive impacts of our new cyber world. The list of meanings of internet slang is quite useful! This is a must read...

            Book Description

A well-known fact of teen life is that they generally spend more time online than adults, often participating in new online activities and online communities. This is a trend that the consumer electronics (CE) industry has picked up on, creating a new line of teen-targeted devices that are connected and ultra-portable, such as Sony’s mylo and T-Mobile’s Sidekick. These devices often feature preloaded IM clients, connections to social networking sites and the ability to store music, video and photos. But does a portable device with all the bells and whistles, such as connections to Skype and MySpace, inherently resonate with teens?
