Book Description
The problem of greenhouse gas (particularly carbon dioxide) release during power generation in fixed and mobile systems is widely acknowledged. Fuel cells are electrochemical devices offering clean and efficient energy production by the direct conversion of gaseous fuel into electricity. As such, they are under active study for commercial stationary power generation, residential applications and in transportation. The control of fuel cell systems under a variety of environmental conditions and over a wide operating range is a crucial factor in making them viable for extensive use in every-day technology.
In
Control of Fuel Cell Power Systems the application of fuel cells in automotive powertrains is emphasized because of the significance of the contribution to global CO
2 emissions made by ground vehicle propulsion and because of the challenge presented by the accompanying control problems. The authors’ comprehensive control-oriented approach provides:
• An overview of the underlying physical principles and the main control objectives and difficulties associated with the implementation of fuel cell systems.
• System-level dynamic models derived from the physical principles of the processes involved.
• Formulation, in-depth analysis and detailed control design for two critical control problems, namely, the control of the cathode oxygen supply for a high-pressure direct hydrogen fuel cell system and control of the anode hydrogen supply from a natural gas fuel processor system.
• Multivariable controllers that attenuate restraints resulting from lack of sensor fidelity or actuator authority.
• Real-time observers for stack variables that confer redundancy in fault detection processes.
• Examples of the assistance of control analysis in fuel cell redesign and performance improvement.
• Downloadable SIMULINK® model of a fuel cell for immediate use supplemented by sample MATLAB® files with which to run it and reproduce some of the book plots.
Primarily intended for researchers and students with a control background looking to expand their knowledge of fuel cell technology,
Control of Fuel Cell Power Systems will also appeal to practicing fuel cell engineers through the simplicity of its models and the application of control algorithms in concrete case studies. The thorough coverage of control design will be of benefit to scientists dealing with the electrochemical, materials and fluid-dynamic aspects of fuel cells.

Review for Control of Fuel Cell Power Systems : Principles, Modeling, Analysis and Feedback Design.......2006-03-24
A complete book that give to the reader the methodology
to model and understand the fuel cell dynamics and control.
The companion software allows deep insight of the modelling and control problem, and the "what-if" analysis.
Very poor book.......2005-11-16
This is a book with a series of simplifications and assumptions. I thought that it would help me deal with real control problems of fuel cell power systems. Instead it deals with only linearized models that can be easily solved by applying modern control theory. It is less than an introductory book really poor written.

Switching Power Supplies A to Z
ASIN: 1846284589 |
Book Description
Power electronics systems are physical devices that can be modelled mathematically as controlled dynamical systems. This makes them suitable for the application of existing control theory, particularly in the design of their regulatory subsystems. For years there has been a perceived need to bring the disciplines of power electronics and theoretical control into closer co-operation, demonstrating the potentially great advantages of, at first sight, rather obscure control theory to power specialists while making control technicians better aware of the fundamental needs and limitations of power electronics design.
Control Design Techniques in Power Electronics Devices deals specifically with control theories relevant to the design of control units for switched power electronics devices, for the most part represented by DC–DC converters and supplies, by rectifiers of different kinds and by inverters with varying topologies. The theoretical methods for designing controllers in linear and nonlinear systems are accompanied by multiple case studies and examples showing their application in the emerging field of power electronics. The book is introduced through the very important topic of modeling switched power electronics as controlled dynamical systems. Detailed circuit layouts, schematics and actual closed-loop control responses from a representative group of the plants under discussion and generated by applying the theory are included.
The control theories which feature in the book are: sliding mode control and feedback control by means of approximate linearization (linear state feedback, static and dynamic proportional-integral-differential (PID control), output feedback trough observer design, Lyapunov-based control and passivity-based control). Nonlinear control design methods represented include: exact feedback linearization, input-output linearization, differential flatness, generalized PID control and, again, passivity-based control.
This monograph will be of interest to researchers in power systems and their related control problems. It will also assist tutors and students in these fields with its dydactic style and its rich source of worked-out application examples from a broad spectrum of control theories.

power electronic systems: Theory and Design.......2002-07-25
I am happy to use this book as text in my power electronic class, a senior class in undergraduate engineering program. I like this book because it presents pictorial description of modes of operation of circuits. It makes it easier to understand the ensuing theory. Another great feature of this book is that it contains numerous MATLAB examples. This helps students to learn themselves beyond the class room. The book covers all aspects of power electronics subjects that should be covered in the undergraduate class. Although, the chapters on resonant converters and control modelling are more suited for graduate class. I particularly like the chapter on packaging and thermal design. I strongly recommend this book for the senior level undergraduate class.
Not a good buy.......2001-11-30
This textbook has several problems with the layout and editing that make it very difficult to understand. One of the areas that needs improvement is the diagrams and figures, which are printed with such poor quality that they are difficult to read. Also there are numerous instances were equations are printed with incorrect subscripts and supporting information; therefore, I think that this book would not be a good buy for students or anyone else for that matter.
