Book Description
Atom-Photon Interactions: Basic Processes and Applications allows the reader to master various aspects of the physics of the interaction between light and matter. It is devoted to the study of the interactions between photons and atoms in atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics, and laser physics. The elementary processes in which photons are emitted, absorbed, scattered, or exchanged between atoms are treated in detail and described using diagrammatic representation. The book presents different theoretical approaches, including:
* Perturbative methods
* The resolvent method
* Use of the master equation
* The Langevin equation
* The optical Bloch equations
* The dressed-atom approach
Each method is presented in a self-contained manner so that it may be studied independently. Many applications of these approaches to simple and important physical phenomena are given to illustrate the potential and limitations of each method.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful.......2000-06-26
Atom Photon Interactions is an excellent text for atomic and optical physics. I refer back to the review material---transition amplitudes, quantum electrodynamic fundamentals, etc--- over and over again. Naturally, these sections are very brief, and the book works best along side Cohen-Tannoudji's more elementary texts Quantum Mechanics and Photons and Atoms, or their equivalents.
The later chapters are rich in techniques and intuition applicable to atom-trapping, spectroscopy, laser theory, etc. Cohen-Tannoudji covers a lot of material, and manages to link it all to a few basic fundamental principles. The book is extremely well-organized, with bite-sized sections and appendices to each chapter. An excellent collection of exercises with solutions is included in the back. Unfortunately, the text does not prompt the reader to try working these problems at appropriate times (sadly, I didn't realize the exercises were there until I'd been using the book for some time). Like Photons and Atoms, this is primarily a book for theorists; its one weakness, I feel, is that the principles, however clear, never seem connected to the actual numbers that an experimentalist or system designer can relate to.

Book Description
Considered to be one of the best electricity books on the market, the authors have provided a clear understanding of how electricity is produced, measured, controlled and used. A minimum of mathematics is used for direct explanations of primary cells, magnetism, Ohm's Law, capacitance, transformers, DC generators, and AC motors. Other essential topics covered include conductance, current flow, electromagnetism and meters.

RADIO FOR BIGTNNERS, TUBE TYPE CIRCUITS.......2007-09-25
TO TEACN A 15 YEAR OLD BOY BASIC ELECTRYC AND BASIC TUBE CIRCUITS BEFORE HE BEGININGS SOLID STATE ELECTRONICS BY HIS GRANDPA.
Recommended.......2007-08-03
I also own the Bureau of Naval Personnel's "Basic Electricity" and Mike Holt's "Basic Electrical Theory". While I really like Holt's book, and the Bureau's book is a good one, this is one better. Since it was first published in 1954, you may find the illustrations and graphics (did they have "graphics" in 1954?) a bit dated. On the other hand, I think they help explain the concepts very well.
the best intro book on electricity.......2007-04-26
This book is a reprint of the series first published by Rider in 1954.
Its companion book, Basic Electronics, covered vacuum tube equipment. Authors have also done "Basic synchros and servomechanisms" (1955) while a later book, Basic Solid State Electronics (ISBN 0790610426) - published 1982/1983 - covered basic transistors. See my review of this last book. It's not as good as Basic Electricity.
To this day, the Basic Electricity book is one of the best you can start with when learning about electricity. The writing is crystal clear and the authors never waste words or repeat themselves.
Even clearer than the words are the diagrams. They show you exactly what's going on. And so many diagrams. Put the words and pictures together and you can't help but understand everything.
This reprinted version by Prompt covers more topics than found in my 1954 series by Hayden Books. Prompt version also has problem sets.
The only section I didn't enjoy of Basic Electricity was part 5 on motors/generators/power systems. And that's just because it's not my area of interest.
This book is done (mostly) from a qualitative POV. The math is simple. some algebra and phasors. Doesn't use calculus or complex numbers. For those who want this approach get "Principles of Electronics: Analog and Digital" by Lloyd R. Fortney and/or "Introduction to Modern Electronics" by J.C. Sprott (OOP now so buy it used)
Probably the only books that match Van Valkenburgh et al. for clarity are the 24 part series Navy Electricity & Electronics Training Series (NEETS), the books by Schuler/Fowler (Electricity: Principles and Applications by Richard J. Fowler and Electronics: Principles and Applications by Charles A. Schuler) and Bernard Grob's books: Basic Electronics and Direct and Alternating Current Circuits.
Best yet.......2007-02-12
This is the best book on electricity I have every read! I have read a number of entry level books on electricity and all of them have fallen short. The key to this book is its order of presentation. When explained in the proper sequence it is much easier to grasp the topics. If you are looking for a book that will give you a rock solid foundation in electricity then this is the one.
excellent introduction.......2005-07-04
Although basic as the title suggests, it is an excellent text with lots of problems and explanations for those requiring a technician's understanding of practical electricity. Dont expect an electrical engineering circuit analysis book, for that get Mr. Van Valkenburgh's Engineering Circuits.

Book Description
Bioimpedance and Bioelectricity Basics is unique in providing all the information needed to follow the interdisciplinary subjects of bioimpedance and bioelectricity without having to be a graduate student in the relevant fields. For the first time, one book offers the broadest possible introduction to all use and effects of electrical fields in tissue, dealing with the most basic chemical and physical functions of life. Very few books have covered the dielectric and electrochemical side of the subject, despite its importance;
Bioimpedance and Bioelectricity Basics does. It also includes the electrical engineering concepts of network theory and the complex math needed. Up to now, there has been work done by physicists and engineers on one side, doctors and biologists on the other, this book fills the gap, providing the knowledge for both groups.
Key Features
* is one complete source and reference guide to a complex and disparate field
* gives the reader the latest research and applications
* is highly illustrated, with an indepth explanation of all mathematics
Customer Reviews:
Probably not for clinicians.......2007-03-09
Although the book is intended for persons in the biological sciences it is very unlikely to be of much help to those in medical and clinical practice hoping to understand better the applications and interpretation of bioimpedance.
for an experimentalist in biology or physics.......2006-05-22
Instead of delving into research papers on this subject, the authors offer this book. It is a specialised and useful summary of what is known about bioelectricity. The circuits are simple, at least to an electric engineer. But then, she would be unlikely to know the biological aspects covered here.
The level of physics is also straightforward. Simple dieletric models and usages of Maxwell's Equations. Nothing to scare off the physics student.
Significant portions of the book are addressed to the experimenter. Giving help about instrumentation and designs. Plus descriptions of the types of data you are likely to get, and how to analyse these.
Well suited for an experimentalist in either biology or physics.
Book Description
Designed for use in traditional DC/AC courses, this text serves equally well as a stand-alone introductory text and lab manual or as a lab manual for use with any basic theory text. The content of this text/lab manual is prepared with the technical assistance of the Electronic Industries Association, guaranteeing that the material is consistent with the competencies of the electronics manufacturing and service industries.
Book Description
Originally a training course; best nontechnical coverage. Topics include batteries, circuits, conductors, AC and DC, inductance and capacitance, generators, motors, transformers, amplifiers, etc. Many questions with answers. 349 illustrations. 1969 edition.

Time Tested NAVY TRAINING without the Chief yellin' at ya'.......2007-09-03
.
This is the same material used to train ALL of the technicians in ALL of the electronics ratings in the US Navy. I used this book, or one of its earlier versions, when I rode a Submarine in the Eighties.
The US Navy is the most technologically advanced combat force in human history. And this is the material used to train their techs.
'Nuff said.
Dated material, old drawings, unclear illustrations.......2007-07-26
An historical review, not a great book. Not awful either, but closer to never being looked at once its glanced through.
Drawings and methods of things never used any more make this an history book, rather than a textbook.
Great for the beginner or experienced.......2001-08-19
I have been an Avionics Tech. for 30 years and bought this book for my son-in-law. I have had a copy and used it for years to brush up on sometimes forgoten electrical principals. This book is so good that the aircraft technical schools issue it to aviation mechanics for the AC and DC basics. If you want to understand electricity, motors, generators, AC/DC theory...This book is for you!!!!!
From an Enlisted Sailor who knows.......2000-06-03
This book is a fantastic reference guide to those interested in the field of Electricity. I found it extremely useful, both as a guideline for choosing my rating in the Navy's Nuclear Power Program, and as a basic reference guide in application. It is well thought out, and, laid out in a logical straight forward matter. This book, coupled with some basic knowledge of electricity, will give you a broad theoretical background in this fundamental subject.
Fantastic introduction to electricity.......1998-11-30
Well presented,well organized, easy to follow, many many illustrations. This book explains in very easy to understand language tha basic principles of electricity. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
Students need no prior knowledge of electricity to gain a broad and deep understanding with this book. Numerous easy-to-follow examplesillustrated with diagramsdemonstrate the operation and application of electric circuits. To assure practicality, the problems are presented in terms of commonly used voltages and current ratings, and they cover circuits and equipment typical of those found in today's electrical systems.
Customer Reviews:
Good basic knowledge of electricity.......2007-01-18
This book was very helpful in giving me a basic knowledge of electricity, although it doesn't show the proof of the formulas it introduces, but as it entitles to give a basic knowledge of electricity to the reader it could have been very confusing if it was written otherwise.
There's a 2nd edition about to be released!.......2006-10-26
This is a good book for electronics technicians who want to cover the basics of electricity that they would need in their assembly and test work. The first chapter is even a pretty good one on the very basic essence of electricity itself. However, this book was first published in 1983, and much has changed in the field of electronics/electricity technician work since that time. Thus, it might be worthwhile to wait and purchase the second edition which is already past due (Sept. 2006) for release. This older edition talks a great deal about the basics of electricity, wiring, basic calculations of current and voltage, and the use of various forms of instrumentation. This is definitely not something that engineers would benefit from. The exercises in many cases are "fill in the blank" type, and most calculations are extremely simple, requiring no more than a knowledge of the rules which the book provides and also of basic arithmetic.
Average customer rating:
- Good review of the basics
- A bit outdated, but good nevertheless.
- great book
- Excellent: clear and well-organized introduction

Basic Electricity Second Edition A Self-Teaching Guide Ever Wonder
What makes a light bulb work? What overloads a fuse? Why your car needs a battery and an alternator? We all use electricity in our daily lives, yet most of us don't know what it is or how it works. With Basic Electricity, Second Edition, you can teach yourself all about electricityfor everyday understanding or as a basis for further study. This easy-to-use guide takes you through the basics of electricity and familiarizes you with the workings of voltage, current, resistance, power, and other circuit values in direct-current and alternating-current electricity. The Second Edition has been extensively updated to include the latest in electrical technology. Through step-by-step problem-solving, you'll gain a true understanding of the basic rules, laws, concepts and equations of electric circuits. Best of all, you'll understand and appreciate the nature of electricity without ever having to determine its "invisible" identity. Self-tests at the end of each chapter have been fully revised
and a brand-new end-of-course exam is included so you can test your overall comprehension of basic electricity. For further study, the Second Edition's cross-referenced list of standard texts on electricity has also been updated.
Customer Reviews:
Good review of the basics.......2003-06-12
I found the book helpful in reviewing basic electricity as I've been out of school for a number of years. I wasn't impressed with the experiments and lab exercises presented in the book though; the author could have done a better job of presenting those. It would be rather difficult to actually do these lab exercises as presented, you'd probably need to look for other sources to really set up the lab exercises unless you already have a lot of electrical skill.
A bit outdated, but good nevertheless........2002-04-14
This is a very good book for the true beginner. You learn the basics of resistance, power, capacitance and inductances, and some stuff on motors. If you like simple, easy to follow pictures, this is a good book. However, there is also something lacking. What's lacking is up-to-date information--an idea of how to do useful things with useful components, such as IC's, microcontrollers, etc. I think it's a great book for the basic concepts, but not very good for practical applications. The book was written some time ago, so you can expect this to be the case.
great book.......2001-03-27
This is a fantastic book. If you know nothing about electricaty and want to this is the book to get. It is in a workbook format and walks you through step by step. It makes a great reference guide was well. Highley recomended.
Excellent: clear and well-organized introduction.......1998-10-07
This is a VERY good introduction if you know absolutely nothing about electricity. The clarity of explanation, the organization of the material, and the self-test exercises help you to build a very solid knowledge of this important field. New material is introduced very gradually and smoothly.
