Book Description
This is the first Wireless and Mobile Systems text written for Computer Science and Engineering students (as opposed to Electrical Engineering graduate students). The authors explain the general principles of how wireless systems work, how mobility is supported, what is the underlying infrastructure and what interactions are needed among different functional components. Appropriate for undergraduate or graduate courses, the chapter topics focus on qualitative descriptions and the realistic explanations of relationships between wireless systems and performance parameters. Rather than offering a thorough history behind the development of wireless technologies or an exhaustive list of work being carried out, the authors help EE and CSE students learn about this exciting technology and understand how a cell phone starts working as soon as they get out of an airplane.

A valuable reference book for professional communications engineers.ÿ
Customer Reviews:
Hard to follow with so many errors.......2006-02-05
I echo the previous comment. These topics are not straight forward and needs concentration from the reader to follow the equations and concepts. The last thing the student needs is to keep an eye on the errata "book" to make sure that things don't make sense because he/she is not comprehending something or because on of the formulas has an error.
Keep the errata nearby.......2006-01-09
The book has overall good coverage of the material. Explanations are clear, examples are plentiful and helpful. However, the book is full of errors! As I write there is a 13 page errata, but I ran into many unlisted errors as well. My only other complaint is the cheap paper-back binding. It curled up the first time I opened it, and I haven't been able to get the book to close ever since.

Customer Reviews:
A good introduction to the field.......2001-11-10
Honestly, I wan't five stars blown away by this book, but it deserves better than to be rated one star because someone in Korea wants the solutions manual. After reviewing the wave and quantum nature of light and some elementary solid-state physics, this book discusses the modulation of light by electrical, magnetic, and acoustic means. This theoretical background is used to motivate the next chapter, which covers display devices like LCDs. The next two chapters cover the basic theory of lasers and some of their non-communications applications like holography and machining. The next chapter covers devices to detect light, followed by a chapter on fiber optic waveguides. At this point, the authors have provided sufficient background to discuss optical communications systems. The final chapter covers the non-communcations applications of fiber such as fiber-optic sensors and coherent fiber bundles for imaging. Overall, the book is a good introductory survey of optoelectronics.

Book Description
This systematic introduction into the use of SolidWorks® 2004 delivers all the information necessary for users to become proficient in designing parts, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings. The book and DVD work in conjunction to help users ?see and do? their way to new solid modeling skills using the most current release of the software. Early units demonstrate how to construct three-dimensional models of designs, piece parts, and assemblies. From these models, users will learn to produce detailed engineering drawings that are fully annotated with notes and standard dimensioning practices. Learners will later become skilled at producing free-hand sketches of piece parts from both principal orthographic and isometric views of the object. Finally, users will create a self-directed or course-defined project consisting of the assembly as a solid model, the assembly drawings, and detailed drawings fully dimensioned and annotated as required for fabrication.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, DVD is handy.......2004-11-08
The book is good, but the DVD tends to be more useful when looking for options and tools. The DVD must be played with the supplied player on the DVD, and this may be hard to find if you don't look for it and the autorun does not load. Normal DVD programs cannot play the DVD content of the disk.
Solid Work.......2004-10-30
Not the best text book I've used.
DVD does not appear to work, having tried three different working DVD drives and players. Package seal (probably illegally) says once broken that you foreit all return rights.
The book is based around tutorials, a lot of space is devoted to listing what you will be doing and the "course" structure. Once past the initial, and confusing parts, the rather basic illustrations do give you a reasonably structured introduction to using the application, and solid modelling.
Perhaps OK for students, but does seem rather expensive, considering the DVD apparently does not work in the UK.

Customer Reviews:
Limited Data, poorly edited.......2007-04-04
I was expecting some basic information on Private Telephone systems, nothing detailed. I didn't get that, and the book is so poorly written and edited that many references to figures are incomplete, inconsistent, and in some cases wrong. It is clear that this was excerpted from another text, and the editing provides for numerous grammer and punctuation mistakes, making a difficult read even worse.
Keep the terminology consistent in the book and reference all aspects of the pictures used, and it might provide a good overview for someone interested in the basic constructs of Private Telephony. But this book doesn't accomplish the task.
Introduction to the alphabet soup.......2006-01-03
This book gives quite what the title promises: an introduction into the alphabet soup of the world of telephony. Unfortunately, it does not really go beyond explaining what all those abbreviations mean. It remains a quite dry list of topics without background or discussion of the various systems. It has some nice diagrams, though.

Book Description
Most textbooks on this subject focus heavily on the mathematical perspective of communication. Today's managers do not need to know how to figure out the quantization process of an analog sample, they simply need to understand how the theory works-in plain English. Introduction to Communications Technologies: A Guide for Non-Engineers is a quick-read tutorial on telecommunications and network technologies for graduate and undergraduate students in management information systems and telecommunications management courses. While dealing with the engineering aspects of communication, the book provides a basic understanding of how things work, not how to design systems. Topics include systems, electricity, signaling, telephony, switching, wireless, CTI, and video. It also explains the important relationship between the two major languages spoken in the industry, voice and data, something not done in other texts. The material covered is the same as that presented in a graduate-level core technical course at one of the most respected Information and Communication Services programs in the country. Students will not need a technical background in order to gain the valuable knowledge that lies within these pages. Designed to provide students with a foundation of knowledge that will serve them well into their careers, Introduction to Communications Technologies: A Guide for Non-Engineers provides students with the tools necessary to become effective leaders of technology professionals.
Customer Reviews:
Great delivery on promised content!.......2003-06-11
This book delivers exactly what the title says that it will. If you are a non-engineer, but need a good understanding of how things work...this book delivers. It covers a wide variety of topics that are timely and does so in a way that us non-electical engineers can grasp, understand and apply. Authors Jones and Kovac do an excellent job of imparting the information and following the KISS principle. But, this should not be a surprise to anyone as the book was put out by Auerbach Publications/CRC Press and they are well known in many circles for quality technical publications. While the editors say that this is a quick-read reference for non-technical graduate and undergraduate students, I would disagree. This is an excellent book for anyone that needs a good ground level discussion of modern telcom topics without all of the related engineering baggage that some authors include. Not for the engineer and not for the overly experienced, but well worth the cost for the information provided.

Full of fundamental and transcription errors.......2005-03-20
The content is interesting.
It tries to focus on the basic concepts behind the various components used in DWDM.
The problem is the numerous errors and the incoherence throughout the book:
- notation varies;
- errors are flagrant and should have been easely corrected with a simple review;
- some fondamental errors of physics: the photon does not a mass!!!! (p. 8)
Should be reedited.
OK for a salesman, but overpriced........2003-04-25
The book is fine for a salesperson, but why it cost so much? As a pshysisist the book gives me a good reference on how to approach explaning some technologies to non PhD people. By all means not technical - childs play.
Not easy to understand.......2002-10-17
Too complicated with all the abbrevations and mathematical details not to understand for "non-scientists". Not everybody is an PhD!
Much better book is the following:
ISBN: 3895781746
Adequate introduction, but there are better..........2001-01-24
The book has good coverage, and will leave the reader with a decent overview of what's out there, but very little understanding of anything. While that seems like the point of such a book, it doesn't really make the book useful. This isn't popular physics--anybody who needs an overview of DWDM probably needs a little more than this tiny book can offer.
The other reviews about the book's low editing quality were right on. It has the feel of something produced with a laptop, one weekend and an inkjet.
Mostly useless.......2001-01-04
Only 70 of the 250 pages are dedicated to DWDM technology directly. Full of conflicting and ambiguous comments. For instance the section on Arrayed Waveguide Grating states in two consectutive comments: >AWG's are temperature sensitive. To eliminate thermal drift... Next Comment: >AWG's operating in the wide temerature range (0-85C) have been reported. Most topics are treated rather lightly. Seems like a book put together in a hurry to cash in on the recent "Fiber" goldrush.
