4 out of 5 stars Good addition.......2007-08-17

This book is a good supplement to the other "How to get into the top MBA programs." It's a lot smaller and goes much less in depth. I found it was a nice supplement to the other book, but I would not suggest this one as your main source for application tips and strategies.

Good luck! It's tough competition but it's worth it!!

5 out of 5 stars Great MBA prep book.......2007-02-08

This is a great book for understanding how the US MBA admission process works. Coming from Africa this book guided me through the whole process of essay writing, GMAT, application and I got admitted into a top 10 US MBA school. I don't think this would have been possible without the knowledge I got from it.

I highly recommend it to prospective MBA students; especially those coming fron outside the USA.

5 out of 5 stars I got in!.......2007-02-04

I was only trying to get into one school, it was the only one with the program I needed. It is just starting to make the lists for top 50 business schools. This book was invaluable. It really walks you through all the steps of applying. A few things didn't apply to me but it was all useful. I didn't have the chance to do an interview for a backup school first as it recommends, because I didn't have one. But with this book I was prepared. So, long story short, I got in and even recieved a significant scholarship.

5 out of 5 stars Great for MBA Application Preparation.......2007-01-10

This book is great. It is a great tool to get you to really evaluate yourself as an applicant for any business school you are applying to. The MBA Game plan will also be a great tool to make sure your recommenders are on the same page as you. I highly recommend it!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Out of date, but the basics stay the same.......2003-10-29

If you skip over the parts where they tell you things like set aside time to call the school and request materials, this book is great. A new edition that recognizes the advent of that thing called a computer and its friend the internet, and this book would be five stars. Very valuable information.

4 out of 5 stars Differentiate, Differentiate, Differentiate.......2003-03-27

The title offers the key to the MBA application process: Marketing.

1) Treat your application as a whole with each part adding a new piece to the jigsaw puzzle. Naturally, you must know the product (you) and the customer (school/admissions committee).

2) Know yourself. Determine your positioning statement first. What is the major theme that will pervade your application? What makes you different from the other 10,000+ Harvard applicants?

3) Know the school. Learn as much as you can about the schools. Each of them has a different market position and culture. You have to get past the information on the website or else you will bore the admissions committee to sleep. Visit the schools and talk to alumni.

4) Good tips on writing: keep it simple, write colorfully, edit mercilessly. (chapter 7)

5) 42 pages of essays, but if you want to see a lot of essays, read Richard Montauk's HOW TO GET INTO THE TOP MBA PROGRAMS (over 90 essays from 30 different people).

As other reviewers mentioned, this book is not a bad place to start, but it is terribly outdated - no mention of the internet.

4 out of 5 stars A useful tool.......2001-09-03

My only warning is : don't think that with this kind of books you will get a seat in a top business school.

This book is a useful tool to organize your postulation, the other "recipes" are not valuable.

As a agenda, it is a good book.

3 out of 5 stars Good but outdated.......2001-08-10

THis book is useful but it is somehow outdated. I wish that the authors would write a new version that would be more up-to-date. I have the impression that the rules of the game have a bit changed.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat outdated, not particularly robust.......2001-07-25

This book covers many of the same ideas that Richard Montauk's book does: how to position yourself to business schools, the importance of knowing the school, etc. However, the advice is outdated with much of the advice written in reference to the early 1990s when the authors attended HBS. Further, most of the advice is given in the form of critiquing the essays of others, which is a somewhat tedious way to get the message.

I think that the Montauk book does a better job of addressing the positioning/marketing issues, and Montauk has is a more robust treatment of the rest of the application process. Save your money and skip this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2005-01-08

This book is very useful for anyone who is a history major or is thinking of majoring in history. The first section outlines some general, but important information. It talks about writing an effective resume. It also discusses different steps to take to become successful depending on what stage in education you are in (high school, college, or graduate school). There are interviews with different people who are already working in fields related to history which are useful. The second section, which is much larger than the first, describes 35 different careers that a history degree can be of use in. The careers range from corporate jobs, government jobs, teaching, and museum jobs. The book describes many different aspects of the career, such as expected salaries, how fast that segment of the job-market is growing, what level of education and other skills are needed for the job, etc. Overall, this book is a great resource for people looking to use their history degrees to make a living. It also provides other online and print sources that could be useful in the job hunt.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2005-11-18

I have come a long way with this book. I found it at a flea market for $1 right after I finished college. I used some of the techniques to move from a dead-end job, to an entry-level job in an industry I wanted to actually be in. I later became a career counselor, and now I am writing a course and I am considering having this book as a required reading for our curriculum. Buying this book for one dollar was the smartest purchase I have ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-05-20

In the latest edition of the College Grad Job Hunter, Brian D. Krueger, a post-college career authority, provides a highly targeted book on job hunting skills for recent college graduates. While others seeking entry level jobs can benefit, the emphasis is on how to prepare while you are still in college or just graduating. As such, it is a solidly written and well-organized book that views job hunting as a process and provides step-by-step techniques for searching for that ideal job. It is a useful how-to manual even if it duplicates some of the advice in other books, such as What Color is Your Parachute? Krueger helpfully includes sample letters, phone messages and job hunting Web sites and books. We recommend this good, basic book for all novice job hunters (not just freshly-minted college grads).

2 out of 5 stars Get it for free, apparently.......2003-10-24

Well, so I just bought this book, and, yeah, it's pretty useful. However, I looked on their web site, www.collegegrad.com, and, apparently, "Want the straight story on how to find a job? The job search advice at this site is direct from the #1 best-selling book for entry level job search, "College Grad Job Hunter" by Brian Krueger. The entire contents of this book are online here at our site, available to you for free!" So do what the nice man says, and don't throw your money away on actually buying the book, like I did.

2 out of 5 stars Less Than Honest (4th edition).......2003-01-25

This book has tips on how to get your name noticed but they seem not very moral. Chapter 15 suggests putting a dollar to catch the attention of hiring managers and other tactics that seem less than honest and seem more theatrical than anything. Furthermore, chapter 13 has less than honest techniques such as saying you are updating a mailing list to get contact information. You might think these are valid and not lying at all but I consider them exactly so.

I do not think such tactics are an honorable way of getting a job.

4 out of 5 stars Many unconventional tips.......2002-08-22

This book has more offbeat advice than any job hunting book I've read. Indeed, newlygrads need the help and the gimmicks to get on top of the pile in today's job market. For example, one "guerrilla insider technique" suggested enclosing a crisp dollar bill to your resume submission, with a handwritten Post-It note with:

"I know that time is money and I value your time. Would you please invest two minutes in reviewing my resume today, and in taking my phone call later this week? I appreciate your time."

Gimmicky book. Add it to your collection.

The first few chapters have some interesting information for high school students and college freshman who are thinking about becoming economics majors. Their are suggestions on what type of classes to take and some (not very complete) information about what kinds of jobs economics major can find.

The rest of the books gives 3-4 page summaries of different jobs. The summary are not written specifically for economics majors, they are obviously written for more than one book. Most of the descriptions are for jobs that would be more suitable to accounting majors. All of the information about these jobs is available for free on the burea of labor statistics website.

This book would be ok for someone just entering college, but is pretty much useless for an economics major who is entering the job market soon.
