5 out of 5 stars This book saved my career in the first months and beyond!.......2007-03-01

I have seen Donna speak several times. My most memorable was the first time hearing her speak at the National Student Nurse Association convention. She was so inspirational and helpful. Donna personally signed a copy of this book that book got me through some of my roughest times as a new nurse. Yes, her advise is logical common knowledge to some, but when your are new to a profession and somewhat timid, the words are a great gift of help! Thank you Donna for helping me survive my first year. Now, 5 years later, I am a thriving nurse that continues to reference the book at times as a refresher. I also encourage as many new grads as I can to read it.

Nursing is so fortunate to have a person like Donna to positively promote the profession.

Additionally, I educate nurses about bullying and typically refer my audience to Donna's site and her article "Do Nurses Really Eat Their Young." It's a great article and I agree with Donna wholly that there truly are more helping nurses than bullies. Unfortunately those few bullies have a large impact on the nursing profession. I attempt to help nurses "bully-proof" themselves and see there are ways to avoid the bullies and those bullies are not the majority in nursing. Donna has encouraged me in this endeavor. She also encouraged me to reinforce to my audience the new mantra she would like to create for nursing..."Nurses nurture their own."

All in all, what I have tried to get across to you here is:
1.) Nursing is a great profession,
2.) Donna is a great mentor for nurses,
3.) THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book as early as your can, even if still in nursing school.......2006-12-09

Over the weekend I purchased Your First Year As a Nurse: Making the
Transition from Total Novice to Successful Professional because I wanted
a new start. Let me just say that 1) it was money well spent and 2)
purchasing this book should be made a mandatory requirement to any
student who starts a nursing program.

So far, I have read half the book. Already I have found some renewed
energy, and my enthusiasm about nursing is increasing again. I
graduated five months ago and took a job in an ICU where I have been working for four months and half months. Recently, I made the decision to leave the ICU.

I am starting in a step down unit tomorrow and I am very excited about
starting over. I experienced all of the following prior to making this
decision: frustration, fatigue, anxiety, dreading going to work, fear of
making mistakes, and many other emotions. Had I read your book prior to
starting this position, I could have avoided this painful period in my
nursing career. Of course, I have learned many valuable lessons. But I
do think nursing would earn a better reputation if newcomers did not have
to go through this experience. And I know that I am not the only one who has felt this way. I have read countless numbers of blogs on the internet of new grads who described the same feelings I shared earlier.

Thank you Ms. Cardlille for all the wonderful advice that you have shared. I joined the ANA today and contacted my state's Nurse Association regarding future events. I am looking forward to networking because you make it sound so much fun and rewarding. Please continue the work that you are doing. You are very inspiring to new nurses.

A grateful new grad.

A great book for the new grad and for all nurses. I can appreciate this book even though I am a Director of Nursing.
Well written, Thanks.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview.......2007-08-13

I was very pleased with this purchase. Reis gives a great overview of academia and the US university system. He make lots of points I hadn't thought of as well as some very sage comments on how education should be approached. The main drawback of the book is that it is a little outdated - for example he suggests the new idea of looking for job postings on a thing called the World Wide Web!

2 out of 5 stars Obfuscated text, with an orotund tone.......2007-05-13

I was extremely disappointed with this book. The auther attempts to appear clever and sly, but ends up sounding verbose and grandiloquent. Blast!

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful book !.......2007-01-22

This is an excellent book. I used it extensively as I prepared to apply for a faculty position in a science department. I strongly recommend it to anyone who would want to become a university professor in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for any Ph.D. candidate in engineering.......2007-01-09

This is an excellent overview of Ph.D. program goals, career options for Ph.D.s, and job search strategies. There's even a section on what to do in your early career on the tenure track. I'm in a position that gives me particular knowledge of the process, and still, this book is extremely useful. It provides multiple perspectives on the profession and addresses not only high-end research universities, but also liberal arts colleges with science programs and everything in-between.

2 out of 5 stars Does not say anything new.......2004-07-03

The book is designed as a guide for graduate students, post-docs, and non-tenured faculty looking for careers in academic science and engineering.

The book has four parts: the first gives an exposition of the world of academia, the second discusses preparation for academic careers for graduate students and post-docs, the third discusses strategies for looking for and applying to academic positions, and the fourth discusses life as junior faculty and the tenure application process.

While the book is well-written and well-organized, it does not provide any helpful information or insight. All information in the book should be well-known to any graduate student or post-doc who is even slightly serious about a career in academic science and engineering.

For example, every graduate student and post-doc should know full well that teaching experience and grant-writing skills are indispensable when applying for an academic position. Every non-tenured faculty should know what tenure is all about and what is necessary in order to achieve it. The book discusses these issues as if these are helpful pointers for success in academia.

The book provides advice on how to write teaching portfolios, how to handle campus tours, how to negotiate salaries, etc. However, there are many excellent books and websites discussing these issues in greater detail. This book is thus superfluous and unnecessary.

The books is organized into small chapters with great example resumes and a list of key words. It allow you to improve you IT resume in a short amount of time and even have suggestion on where to start if you are new to IT.

4 out of 5 stars The Best, don't look further.......2005-01-11

I read this book so fast, the way it was written was so interesting and easy, evey single question I had in mind was answered, nothing is left! I loved the book, unfortunately I cannot get the Ace the IT INTERVIEW book, because it is not available in my area, but I would definetly the interview book too! by the way there is a very good chapter about interview in this book!
four little things i hated about this book:

    - much more of network than software development ! but it is ok coz most careers are in Network administration.
    - in a resume there was: Modem Software!!, this is called Browser...!
    - adding Norton AntiVirus in an IT resume is something stupid!
    - PHP and C-Sharp: top programming lanuges not mentioned in the book!

5 out of 5 stars In the market for an IT job? Get this book!.......2004-12-28

This book's objective is to land you an interview. Before reading this book I could only say I had 1 maybe 2 interviews total in a period of a few months. After reading this book and using some of its suggestions I have had several more.

Overall I'd rate it a 4.8 since I feel that Paula is a bit too forward with some of her suggestions (for example closing statements on cover letters that are a bit overboard imo).

But that's my only complaint =)

No matter your position in life be it a freshout of college or an experienced IT vet who's looking for something different, this book will pay for itself many times over.

5 out of 5 stars Ace the IT Resume!.......2004-01-15

This book is excellent!!! If you think your resume is good, think again. Follow the steps in this book and you'll see a totally new person. I used it in conjunction with Ace the IT Job Interview and it got me a job.

    1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Horrifying!.......2003-11-24

I do not know where these women got their credentials, but they are WAY off the mark! DO NOT LIE ON YOUR RESUME! No matter what this book recommends! For instance, the authors state: "If your offical title is Tech Level I, you might be responsible for database administration, PC support, and webmaster duties. If you're hoping to move into DBA, list 'database administrator' as the job title and as the first bullet describe your responsibilities in this function." Wrong, wrong, wrong! As a hiring manager and interviewer, if I discover you lied about your job title, especially when you were a Tech I and you claimed to be a DBA, I will wonder what else you lied about. And believe me, I'll find out when I call your previous employers to verify your employment history. No, instead, when in this situation, downplay, emphasize the job title you want, and even omit your job titles, and use the opportunity to emphasize your skills. That way, even if you don't have the right job title, you can demonstrate to me that it doesn't matter. But NEVER, EVER lie or deliberately mislead anyone. Then they'll just feel like you were trying to trick them, which is NOT very impressive.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview for FBI Special Agent Applicants.......2007-01-02

I've read several books on the FBI Special Agent career path, and this book is the most informative overall collection of data available. This is the only book I've read that details the specifics of an agent's career path and what to expect during various levels of an agent's career. It also provides excellent preparation for the two Phases of the agent application process, and I highly recommend this book to any person who is about to embark on the lengthy Special Agent application process.

I am a retired FBI Special Agent and find this book very enlightning and also entertaining. It reminds me of my FBI experiences, from Training School through my work in the different Field Offices. If I were a young person interested in Law Enforcement as a career, I would most certainly find this book as a "must" read.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect guide for anyone interested in the FBI.......2006-09-16

I was interested in being a special agent with the FBI before reading this book and after reading it I am even more interested. This book was very good at explaining the application process for the FBI. Also gave info on a wide range of topics from the history of the FBI, to what an agent does. Anyone interested in a career as a special agent should read this for guidance and valuable insight on this career. It was very helpful to me and can help you out as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Great thoughts!.......2007-10-10

This is a great little book for those who have recently gotten their Ph.D.'s or postdocs, and are wondering: "what next?". The book touches on everything from giving good talks, writing good papers, and even comparing the pros and cons of various career tracks. This should be essential reading for young scientists.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly obvious advice, but helpful if you read between the lines.......2007-10-05

Overall, I did not find this book to be helpful upon reading it. The vast majority of the advice is either obvious or something you already know by the time you become aware of and purchase this book. Who doesn't know that working long hours and refraining from having children is one of the best ways to succeed in science? Who doesn't know that having a good mentor is an invaluable asset, but not guaranteed to happen because we as scientists receive no training in how to be good mentors?

On the positive side, if you read the anecdotes and success/failure stories that constitute a significant fraction of the book, there is a lot to be learned. Some provide hope because they remind you that others have successfully overcome the same challenges you have faced. Others reinforce the often overlooked point that, while having a supportive mentor is beneficial, we are in a career where being your own best advocate is a must. Taking the anecdotal stories as advice on how to best represent yourself and prepare for your career can make this a useful read. That having been said, the value of the advice tapers off the later in your career you read it.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-read book .......2007-04-03

I am currently finishing my Ph.D. study. I thought that it is too late to read this book. However, it is NOT! Based my own experience, the descriptions of Ph.D. study in the book are really accurate and the suggestions given by the author are really helpful.

It is never too late to read this book, strong buy!

According to my own experience, this book provides a casual and down-to-earth (but also extremely accurate!) description of scientific life and the different stages of a scientific career. Maybe it is too physicist-oriented (indeed, solid-state-physicist-oriented), but readers with a different background should also enjoy. (Hope so, I'm also a solid-state scientist!)

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading, especially for new PhD student!.......2006-11-04

Although you may have heard some similar suggestions from your senior friends in science field, the author gives more background and clear rationale for such choices, from the pointview of an established scientist and manager.

5 out of 5 stars A tool kit and not a cookbook . . . which is as it should be.......2007-07-31

Matt set out to provide a toolkit and not a cookbook and that is exactly what he has done. The difference between the two is that the toolkit provides you with the tools to build/repair almost anything while a cookbook provides you with specific "recipes" that answer very specific questions on how to cook certain things. If you want someone to tell you in minute detail how to get into and prospor in IT with an absolute guarantee that, if you follow the recipe, you will succeed, then this book may not be for you. If, on the other hand, you understand the concept of being mentored and of applying lessons to life in general, this book definitely is for you.

I "met" Matt via his ITTollbox blog and I have followed his blog since I first encountered it. You can learn much from his approach to life, family, and career (which is the proper order for things in my opinion). He seems to have a good grip on reality and to be able to apply his skills and the lessons he has learned across the boundaries between professions, which is probably why several reviewers have pointed out that this toolkit is not just for IT people.

This is one of those books that one should keep handy and periodically reread . . . sort of like "The Book of Five Rings" or "Modern Management and Machiavelli" . . . because it will help one to stay focused and to realize that any career is a path and not a destination.

4 out of 5 stars A return to the basics of career building.......2007-04-19

Author Matthew Moran provides considerable insight into the world of IT and how to build your career in this growing field. Moran provides foundational information about what a career actually is and the development of a plan to sell your skills and qualifications to an employer. Moran provides some excellent tips on job searching, resume and cover letter writing, and conducting a successful interview. The CD provided with this book offers the reader some valuable templates for developing a professional resume and career plan.

I have used this book for a college class in career and soft skills development and have thoroughly enjoyed the class. Maybe that cannot be completely credited to Moran and his text but he has certainly provided an excellent foundation for study.

4 out of 5 stars Great for anyone who wants to move up.......2007-02-11

The ideas presented were very interesting and helpful in that the author presented a different, active perspective on how to search for a job. The author has been in the IT field for a long time and also knows how the business environment of IT is like.

Sometimes the author seemed to go on and on about a simple topic as if the point hadn't been made already; Doing so made you want to skip a few lines.

If you're in the right environment and have the right resources, you can definitely get into the IT field with the help of this book. And even if the strategies outlined in the book don't help you to get into the field, the strategies will give you an idea of what needs to be done to get into the field.

4 out of 5 stars Good book worth the time.......2007-02-10

I enjoyed reading this book - it gave me a different perspective to my carrier. Especially the part where it recommends concentrating on reusable skills vs. learning one more technology. I wouldn't say it will give you a real toolkit that's why I give it 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars A Solid Basis for Starting Your Practice.......2005-03-21

It is one thing to learn how to mediate, it is another to learn how to start your business as a mediator. This book focuses on the second task. I found that this book contains good, practical advice for analyzing your own abilities as a mediator and setting up your practice. It even talks about how to establish the physical environment of your office. Combine this with Allan H. Goodman's new, second edition of Basic Skills for the New Mediator, and you should be ready to hang out your shingle.

5 out of 5 stars You Cannot Proceed Without this book!.......2005-03-10

I am just beginning my mediation practice. This book stays with me all day. It gives practical advice, plus deals with the emotional issues attached with such a leap of faith that is required for entering this field. I highy recommend this to everyone!

    5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2003-08-10

This book is one of the most helpful and insightful books that I have read. If you are thinking of, or already are, a mediator, this book is full of great information, ideas, and helpful hints.
This book is an easy read, you could read it in one evening and then be on your way to implement the things that you have learned.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book on Mediation.......2002-02-18

Forrest Mosten has written what must be the definitive book for those who are considering or might consider a career in mediation.

I have known the author since 1970, when he was a law student working part time for me in the foreign student office at UCLA. Even then he was thinking about how he might incorporate his strong social conscience into the practice of law. Ten years later he found his answer when he committed himself to becoming a professional mediator. For Mosten, mediation is more than an efficient means of resolving disputes, it is a way to work as a peacemaker at the person-to-person level. It provides its practitioners who are attorneys with an alternative to the adversarial nature of the legal system, which weighs heavily on many lawyers. Of course it provides the same benefit for clients. He makes his point about mediation as a peace effort dramatically in chapter one, where he states "...don't jump into a growing but still uncertain field like mediation unless you eat, breath and dream about creating peace and resolving conflict and are willing to risk everything to make it happen".

In addition to maintaining a highly successful mediation practice in Los Angeles, Mosten trains future mediators and he has established a nation-wide network of mediation centers. He also is the author of three previous books on mediation.

The author's purpose in writing the book is stated in the first paragraph of the preface, where he says "It was an uphill climb to build my mediation practice. This book is my effort to help you avoid many of the costly mistakes I made along the way".

The book is organized into three parts, each with several chapters, followed by nine appendices. In the first part, "Is Mediation right for You?", he covers the question of what it takes to be a mediator, such as being a good listener, patient, tolerant and neutral, flexible, and empathic, among other traits. In the chapter on "Education and Training", he discusses the question of non-lawyers as mediators. Mosten admits that lawyers have certain advantages, but he lists other fields which often provide a good background, such as therapists, business persons, teachers and clergy. Whether they come from the law or other fields, he states, extensive training in mediation will be required. Here Mosten goes into some depth on this subject which is dear to his heart because he wants "...mediation to be the first stop on the conflict resolution highway", which means having "...enough trained and experienced mediators available to meet this need".

Part Two, "Building Your Career as a Mediator" deals with the creation of a mediation signature, which includes advice on writing vision and mission statements to distinguish your particular practice. He also advocates having a board of directors to help with these tasks and to provide a sounding board along the way which he had earlier described as an informal group of persons whose judgment you trust. (He might more accurately have called them a "board of advisors). Another chapter, "Creating a Mediation-Friendly Environment", gets down to reading materials and arrangement of the reception room. Most important, he introduces the idea of the client library, described as a consumer-friendly collection of books, video tapes and other resources which will help clients learn what they need to help solve their own problems. This concept is related to Mosten's preference for informed client consent, and he reports that his library is well used by his clients.

Part Three is "The Nuts and Bolts of Private Practice", which covers topics such as finding a place to practice, naming your practice, forming strategic partnerships and networks. With respect to networks, he uses his own Mosten Mediation Centers as an illustrative model, in which he has established local mediators around the country as subcontractors. In the chapter entitled "Strategic Planning and Investing in Yourself", he gets very specific about the time and money required to establish a mediation practice, including a breakdown of out -of-pocket costs which add up to $57,000 over a five-year period.

Even though he has stated his desire to see a great increase in the number of practicing mediators, Mosten in no way sugarcoats the obstacles and challenges facing anyone who plans to enter the field. His candor, at times, would almost seem to discourage, but at least anyone who has read the book would enter the field fully warned. More important they will have read a well integrated combination of philosophy and nuts and bolts, each supporting the other.

This is a critical book for those contemplating a career in mediation, it is a useful book for anyone contemplating using the services of a mediator, and it is an interesting book for those who are attracted by the concept of mediation as a force for more peaceful interpersonal relations.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE book for all Mediators!.......2001-12-04

Dear fellow mediators or anyone looking into the mediation profession:

Mosten's book, Mediation Career Guide, is just the book I was looking for to strategically guide me through deciding whether to go into mediation as a profession. The book is well organized and can be read cover to cover or as a reference guide. Some of the key parts of the book are 1) Deciding if Mediation is Right for You and 2) Building Your Career as a Mediator.

The chapter on deciding whether to get your law degree or not for mediation was an especially important chapter for me. I completed one year of law school and then decided to re-evaluate my J.D. path. I enrolled in SMU's Dispute Resolution program to help with my decision. Mosten's book is the only mediation book that directly dealt with the J.D. dilemma. The chapter did not tell me what to do or what Mosten thinks is best. Instead, the chapter asked certain questions about my background to see whether a J.D. is a good choice or not.

Mosten's book is a MUST HAVE if you are deciding whether the mediation profession is right for you and how to build a mediation practice.

Thank you Forrest (Woody) Mosten for this book and all of your contributions to the peace-making profession!

3 out of 5 stars Basic interview text.......2007-04-06

Didn't get the job, but the book did help me a little during the multiple interviews. The better option is to call a rep and have a sit-down to go over the ins and outs. If you can't find one, go to your local pharmacy, they'll have contact info for you. Good luck!

    5 out of 5 stars 3 Days Review.......2007-01-16

Great book! Very different info than other pharmaceutical books. This book is very straight forward and easy to follow. I recommend it for anyone trying to break into the pharmaceutical business.

    2 out of 5 stars I guess OK.......2006-08-11

The book I would say is good if you are willing go insanely above and beyond the normal realms of getting a job...most of the info. is pretty easy to figure out on your own, but if structure is needed this can be a good guideline. Over all it did not do much for me, but it might work wonders for others.

2 out of 5 stars Deficient in important information.......2006-06-14

On the positive side, the book is neat and is written with humor. Unfortunately the negatives outweigh the positives. When reading this book, I found that most of the information covers resume writing and how to make contact with pharmaceutical sales reps. I think some of her advice about making contact could prevent you from ever getting a job in pharmaceutical sales because it is so unprofessional. The "how to actually get the job part," the interview, was seriously deficient in information. There were few questions and few answers, and next to nothing about how to prepare for the interview. This one simply does not deliver on the description of the book given.

4 out of 5 stars Full of good advice.......2006-12-20

I found the book to be packed with invaluable advice. I've only been a cop for about 6 months now, but I wish I had read the book before I became a cop.

The book offers great advice on choosing a department. It also has inspired me to write more reports and write them better.

One of the main points I took from the book was to never sacrafice your integrity.

I didn't like how the auther put a little introductory phrase before almost every single paragraph in the book. If he didn't do that, the book would probably only be 60 pages long.

5 out of 5 stars a must read for thoughtful young people entering police work.......2006-06-27

Barry Baker was a street cop for 20 years in a very tough town before taking promotion. He accurately reflects the central role of patrol - street work - and does not sugar-coat or avoid difficult issues. The conciseness of the book is a strength. His advice to young people is genuine and not idealistic or poorly informed. A nice job.
