Your First Year as a Nurse.......2007-06-04
Timely, sensible, practical, & reassuring info for new nurses entering hospital nursing.
This book saved my career in the first months and beyond!.......2007-03-01
I have seen Donna speak several times. My most memorable was the first time hearing her speak at the National Student Nurse Association convention. She was so inspirational and helpful. Donna personally signed a copy of this book that book got me through some of my roughest times as a new nurse. Yes, her advise is logical common knowledge to some, but when your are new to a profession and somewhat timid, the words are a great gift of help! Thank you Donna for helping me survive my first year. Now, 5 years later, I am a thriving nurse that continues to reference the book at times as a refresher. I also encourage as many new grads as I can to read it.
Nursing is so fortunate to have a person like Donna to positively promote the profession.
Additionally, I educate nurses about bullying and typically refer my audience to Donna's site and her article "Do Nurses Really Eat Their Young." It's a great article and I agree with Donna wholly that there truly are more helping nurses than bullies. Unfortunately those few bullies have a large impact on the nursing profession. I attempt to help nurses "bully-proof" themselves and see there are ways to avoid the bullies and those bullies are not the majority in nursing. Donna has encouraged me in this endeavor. She also encouraged me to reinforce to my audience the new mantra she would like to create for nursing..."Nurses nurture their own."
All in all, what I have tried to get across to you here is:
1.) Nursing is a great profession,
2.) Donna is a great mentor for nurses,
3.) THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!
Buy this book as early as your can, even if still in nursing school.......2006-12-09
Over the weekend I purchased Your First Year As a Nurse: Making the
Transition from Total Novice to Successful Professional because I wanted
a new start. Let me just say that 1) it was money well spent and 2)
purchasing this book should be made a mandatory requirement to any
student who starts a nursing program.
So far, I have read half the book. Already I have found some renewed
energy, and my enthusiasm about nursing is increasing again. I
graduated five months ago and took a job in an ICU where I have been working for four months and half months. Recently, I made the decision to leave the ICU.
I am starting in a step down unit tomorrow and I am very excited about
starting over. I experienced all of the following prior to making this
decision: frustration, fatigue, anxiety, dreading going to work, fear of
making mistakes, and many other emotions. Had I read your book prior to
starting this position, I could have avoided this painful period in my
nursing career. Of course, I have learned many valuable lessons. But I
do think nursing would earn a better reputation if newcomers did not have
to go through this experience. And I know that I am not the only one who has felt this way. I have read countless numbers of blogs on the internet of new grads who described the same feelings I shared earlier.
Thank you Ms. Cardlille for all the wonderful advice that you have shared. I joined the ANA today and contacted my state's Nurse Association regarding future events. I am looking forward to networking because you make it sound so much fun and rewarding. Please continue the work that you are doing. You are very inspiring to new nurses.
A grateful new grad.
Prescription for Success.......2006-07-07
An outstanding resource filled with valuable nuggets of information. From staying organized, becoming a team member, and developing clinical proficiency through the guidance of a capable preceptor, to taking care of yourself, networking and planning for career advancement, Ms. Cardillo covers it all. Your First Year As a Nurse is a significant prescription for success for all nurses and nursing students who desire to bloom and grow professionally.
It is about time someone had the courage to write a book like this........2006-02-26
A great book for the new grad and for all nurses. I can appreciate this book even though I am a Director of Nursing.
Well written, Thanks.

Marginally helpful.......2007-10-16
This book's info is antiquated at best. The author has nice writing examples for personal statements, but CASPA's essay does not allow an essay of this length. The info for deadline dates, as well as tutition is no longer correct for most schools.
The sample interview questions are generic, but the author does give decent insight into what the interviewees may be wanting to hear. I would not spend to money asked for full price on this book, but perhaps a used copy would worth it.
So-so for 2007, Great for 2004.......2007-10-02
Well maybe great for pre-World Wide Web. Most, if not all, the information about the schools is available from online resources. If the author was to compile and update this information yearly and post it on a web site using the book with a key number, he would have a winning combination. Alas, that isn't the case.
Having little or no access to counseling resources, the most difficult part of the PA application process was writing the narrative which for the 2007 application cycle, at least, was to address the statement: Please describe your motivation towards becoming a PA. Looking at the sample essays in the text, I put together a 2000 word statement to somewhat match the sample essay's length. Only one small problem, CASPA now restricts applicants to 2,970 characters which in my case was 519 words. One just doesn't have the luxury of explanations and developing ideas that is shown in the text.
At this stage, I have submitted my CASPA application and am now in the waiting game to hear about interviews. In skimming the interview information, it appears to be a rehash of standard interview hints. Whom would think that one should be well groomed at a professional interview? Whom would to think to have a strong confident posture in interviewing for a medical position. While these hints may be valuable to someone whom has not gone through an interview process, they are standard for most people that have been involved in health care which the majority of Master's level PA applicants have been.
With a minimum of updating to discuss CASPA and how to write an effective 2,970 application essay, this text could be a great help. Until then, at best a so-so use of the dead trees used to create the paper it is printed on.
Great Book!.......2007-09-24
If you are serious about getting into the P.A. profession you NEED this book. Extremely informative. It's been a huge help to me while putting my application together. It was actually recommended to me by the director of the program I'm trying to get into.
goody but oldy.......2007-03-30
I'm contemplating applying to a PA program, and my impression of the book is pretty consistent with the positive reviews here. My only concern is that this 2nd edition from 2003 may be getting out of date, what with all the newsmag articles and whatnot in the last few years about how PAs are going to be one the best job fields to enter over the next decade. This book could really stand to have another edition printed soon.
Excellent. Goal-oriented, methodical, challenging........2007-03-19
Followed the steps in this book, got accepted by both PA schools that I interviewed with.
What more should I write?

Little depth or application to medical sales.......2007-06-03
I bought this book expecting more information pertinent to making medical sales. I found there to be little in terms of industry paradigms and expectations. The selling strategies seemed pretty elementary.
I've had more success reading good relationship sales texts, such as SPIN Selling or Relationship Selling in combination with The Health Care Value Chain.
Great Sales Book for the Beginner to the Seasoned Sales Rep.......2007-05-13
I have read several sales "how to" texts through my 10 year career in medical sales (pharmaceutical, device, and biotech indutries) and this has been my best find to date. Recently, I have taken on national and international sales training for my company, and have ordered this text for the new hires who have limited sales expereince. There are also great tips for the well expereinced sales representatives as well. The MSDR includes great info on how to get past gate keepers, how to sell to multiple levels within a hospital, through sales basics.
Tremendous tool from the experts in Medical Sales!!!.......2006-12-24
Books like these don't come along every day. Ryan Gray and his team are the absolute experts when it comes to Medical Sales. Whether you want to be the top rep in your company or if you want to be working for the top medical company in the industry, you can't find a book with better strategies.
The unpretentious and straightforward writing makes it easy to read, and the ideas can be implemented immediately. This book is time saver and a valuable tool for being successful in medical sales.
Highly Recommended!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well worth the money.......2006-06-30
I've been in the device business for about 5 years now and picked up this book a few months ago. There were things I'd never thought of in there. My return on investment (based on some new ideas from the book) was very high and my manager is taking a look at it right now. I was sceptical as well. Nice free gifts also. I just gave Ryan my Amazon order number and he sent the the freebies.
It is all about Win Win!.......2006-05-20
I found the Vendesi Group and Ryan Gray's book, to be an wonderfully easy to read book, while at the same time you find yourself needing a break after each chapter so that you can pause and absorb the content. Very simple and straight forward writing makes it easy to read, and the depth of wisdom makes it a book to carry along with you as you travel and continue on your quest to becoming a better salesperson.
