An utterly invaluable reference for anyone searching for a job or planning their career.
Great to help you develope your cover letters for jobs.......2007-01-19
I recommend this any entry level job seeker. looking fro a little expert advise in there job search.
An excellent addtion to its sister book "resume magic".......2006-12-09
This book follows the path the "resume magic" made. Although I found slightly below "resume magic" it still an excellent reference to write cover letters.
All aspects of building a cover letter are covered in a progressive manner. The task of writing is therefore a lot easier. Examples are very good, and the author did a very good job leading the reader through the task of writing a cover letter.
In the end this book will definitely help you come up with strong, well structured and well written cover letters.
A must have for every job-seekers or just any professional.
Adapted for the times.......2005-03-08
As an IT professional, I found this book packed with good information. The overall style is updated and compatible with the times, and the many examples are creative and varied. Too many "cover letters" cling to the old school of "Enclosed Please Find" formality of another era. In these times, it's equally important to communicate some idea of your style and personality to give an employer a more complete picture of what they're getting when they think of hiring you - that extra something that makes you pleasantly unique from the 500 other cover letters in the pile.
For my field, I almost never use paper anymore for letters or for resumes, so I found the info on email throughout the book to be very useful. Most books I've seen barely cover it at all or the authors don't quite grasp its limitations.
I also liked the way the book analyzed the cover letter examples of what worked and what didn't, and why. The exercises were a bit vague but you don't really need them to get the most from this book. It's worth every penny.
Not for serious jobs.......2003-10-05
This book is decent if you're looking for a back-office/blue-collar type job. The tactics are very basic and the examples are childish and the format quite unprofessional. If you're looking for a real cover letter guide for the most competitive jobs look somewhere else.

I wanted it to be better.......2007-10-03
As a professional resume writer with experience in senior executive-level resume writing, I bought this book because I was in a creative slump and was looking for some inspiration. This book contains examples of resumes written in very traditional, very standard formats, but nothing inventive. I also would have liked to see more about cover letters.
What I found most unhelpful about this book was the amount of text the author devoted to touting his own writing prowess and the shameless plugs throughout for his resume writing services. On a side note, I find myself suspicious of the glowing 5-star reviews given anonymously by "a reader"...
I would sleep with this book under my pillow if I could..........2005-05-15
An excellent book! Absolutely one of the best exec. resume books out there. This is a must read. I reference it whenever I have a question, and think this is one of the best comprehensive resume books out there. Thanks! Laura, Apex Resumes, www.apexresumes.com
don't leave work without it.......2003-04-11
I've used Asher's Executive Bible for several years now. My brother recently lost his job at IBM and I immediately bought him a copy of his own.
In this market your resume is little more than another unwanted piece of junk mail. You need to be polished and must stand out from an increasingly large crowd to find a good position and further your career.
Asher's Executive Bible gives you practical examples of actually resumes. He points out successful presentation techniques and styles.
There's no need to dumb down your resume and grovel for a job - any job. Asher's Bible has allowed my to manage my career onward and upward. He can do the same for you.
Not bad, but not enough.......2003-01-11
I agree with one of the earlier reviewers; this book is more a compendium of (many) examples than a practical guide to making your resume shine.
As a certified professional, full-time executive resume writing expert, I know that personalized information and details can make all the difference. (NOT to be confused with personal details and information, like hobbies.)
Take care not to copy the resumes in this (or any) too exactly. This makes your resume too "cookie-cutter." It looks just like those created by inexpensive resume writing software (or cheap resume writing services).
... You're attempting to sell a very expensive product of uncertain quality to company management.
This book can help you, but remember that you can't afford NOT to have a professional-looking resume and marketing documents with the correct content.
Good Luck,
John Todd
A lot of the same thing.......2001-05-31
I was not exactly thrilled with this book. It seems that the author mearly published all of the resumes he has written for clients rather than show some different forms and styles. Granted, there are many ideas to be gotten out of the book, but I would have liked to see some variety in the styles of the resumes. They all looked much the same. I think "Executive Resumes" by Steven Provenzano has been a much more helpful resume book

Very Well-Written, Clear Guide for Executive Resumes.......2004-04-16
This book clearly, quickly, and concisely, takes you through how to develop an executive resume and cover letter. It outlines the purpose of various resume elements, and explains why the elements of an executive resume are different than the resume format you learned when you graduated from college.
Well over half of this 300+ page book is sample resumes, and they are really outstanding.
A MUST-READ FOR SENIOR EXECS/FUTURE EXECS/MGRS/PROFESSIONALS.......2002-12-06
As a somewhat cynical New Yorker jaded by the mediocrity of most career and job search books, I was pleasantly surprised at the excellence of William Montag's CareerJournal.com Resume Guide for $100,000+ Executive Jobs. The book was deservedly named "Editor's Choice" for September 2002 through December 2002 by the Editor in Chief and General Manager of CareerJournal from The Wall Street Journal. The book, done in partnership with The Wall Street Journal, is based on Mr. Montag's firsthand experience as a professional writer and outplacement counselor to the 50 real-life clients featured in the book. I particularly like the fact that each of the sample resume/letter packages featured throughout the book represents a real-life client that Mr. Montag has served and helped over the past decades. Unlike the majority of career books that include sample resumes and letters written by people other than the author, each and every letter/resume package in this book was originally researched and prepared by Mr. Montag himself. The bottom line is that I followed the book because every recommended step in this text was personally market-tested and proven by the author himself. He backs up every word with firsthand case history experience. The power packaging in Part I of the book is followed by quality chapters featuring the author's reality-based Expansionist Theory--an on target formula for executing an aggressive job search--and the 24/7 Online Job Search Directory featuring the best of the best career and job search Web sites on the Internet. The author also delineates a step-by-step process for registering with CareerJournal.com, the Wall Street Journal's official career Web site. Add this book to your library today.

BRAVO AND WELL-DONE: AN INTELLIGENT RESUME & JOB SEARCH BOOK.......2002-09-11

Everything that you need to know to create first-class resume, launch a first-class job search, capitalize on the Internet, and start receiving job offers is detailed in this book. IT CONTAINS NO SPECIAL TIPS FOR WOMEN ONLY.......1999-05-15
The book is very well written and organized, it contains valuable information on job hunting. Yet, I was very disappointed to find out that although the back cover claims to have "special tips for women only", I found NOTHING about it...... such claim is precisely what drove me to buy the book, since I am a woman. Anyway, the excellent examples in this book are absolutely professional, and the overall composition of the book is classy. It really helps job hunters to organize their thoughts and succeed in their job hunting campaign.

Semper Fidelis Praise for Troutman's Fantastic New Book!.......2006-02-28
Dear Amazon.com staff;
Congratulations! You outdid yourselves by having Ms. Kathryn Troutman's latest book, "Military to Federal Career Guide," in your resource library.
After serving 24 years in the Marine Corps and ten years as a Career Development Coach for the Department of Defense at Camp Pendleton, CA, home to over 40,000 Marines and Sailors of the 1st Marine Division, I am pleased to praise the name of Ms. Kathryn Troutman for creating a tool that will aid the military person in becoming a Federal employee. The book "Military to Federal Career Guide" is that tool.
Military personnel respond well to organized information and the "Military to Federal Career Guide" is just that, organized! This fantastic book helps military personnel to identify their transferable skills that they possess that will relate to their desired goals as a Federal Government employee.
Ms. Troutman realized that since military personnel use steps and sequences to accomplish their goals, that she must create the path for the military personnel to travel to the government resume and with this book, she has done just that.
I endorse this book so much because I believe that any military person that uses this book from beginning to end, following all of the steps and examples, will have a far greater chance for a job offer from the Federal government than someone that doesn't use the "Military to Federal Career Guide" book.
Semper Fidelis to the staff of Amazon.com for your professionalism.

Highly Recommended by Fred E. Coon, Chairman & CEO of recruiting and executive placement agency Stewart, Cooper & Coon, Inc........2006-01-23
What I really like about this book is the easy-to-follow layout. It is clear and I know how to find an issue area I wish to learn more about. I also feel the content is solid and the examples are as good as it gets for this difficult area to write about. Kathryn takes the mystery out of understanding the Federal process and makes it easier by laying out the issue areas clearly and providing examples for each. She also devotes an appropriate amount of time to the dreaded KSA's and how to cut them down to size and present your background well enough to make it through the maze of the Federal selection processes.
Kathryn also has excellent resources listed and her abundant research on the subject shows in the material that is presented. Like my book, it comes with a CD-ROM that has just excellent color, graphs, charts and indexing. Quite a treat to view. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in working for the Federal Government. It will make the process so much easier to understand and I believe if you follow her advice, you will have a much better chance of consideration for employment in a very crowded arena.
Complete and Easy to Use - Must Have for Military Transition.......2006-01-17
As a former Transition Assistance Program workshop facilitator and now as a direct placement recruiter, I have worked with hundreds of transitioning military service members. Not enough vets make use of their hiring advatage in federal government because the process is so involved and can be intimidating.
Troutman's latest book takes her abundant expertise in the federal hiring process and translates it in an easy to use and highly comprehensive workbook for ALL those who are leaving military service and want to explore a federal career.
This book includes basic federal resume construction, an overview of the federal hiring process, how to interpret a federal job posting, electronic versus paper applications, explainations of how to claim Veterans Prefence Points, how to utilize your past experience (no matter what it was!) and how to translate "military-speak" in to federal employment language. There is also a CD-DVD-Rom included that has numerous resume samples. This book is a great supplement to the TAP manual - all the things the TAP manual barely touches on (in regards to federal employment), this book delves in and fully explains.
Additionally, Troutman has done much of the research that normally takes job many frustrating hours searching the web. She includes a resource section which shares various agency websites, how to navigate them and how to apply to each individually.
I recommend this book to those leaving military service, both enlisted and officers alike. It is a valueable resource - a low price investment that will be of great help to military service member making the leap into federal employment. There is no other guidebook out there like this!
Don't wait until your terminal leave to get working on your federal package. The federal hiring process is not the swiftest. As a wise teacher once told me, and I now tell all my students, "Do It Now".

A Reference For Career Centers rather than individuals.......2007-10-18
Over 87 Resume samples are included with a little bit of advice how to write them mixed in.
The resumes are split into very specific sections ranging from sales, health care, science and accounting, so for one person a large amount of the book is not hitting a direct target. Good for a career center where many different people will look.
Good Book!.......2007-04-12
This book will definitely help you put together a professional looking resume. A book of substance. Clear and concise. Worth every penny. The first edition was good too.
A godsend.......2003-09-29
This book gave me the guidance and outlines that I needed. It provided excellent samples that laid out a resume just as I wanted it to be. The tips were invaluable. I'm working on my new resume now and found that its much better than the old one. It is one I will be proud to sell me to my next employer. To Wendy Enelow and Louise Kursmark, thank you for this book!

Direct and Excellent.......2006-07-25
I've read through this book and applied the lessons in it to develop various resumes for the jobs I've applied to with good results. The before and after of my resume shows an amazing difference, as well as my approach to applying to jobs and interviewing for them. It is all about gearing your presentation to the job at hand, and this also applies to the interview process. e.g. I was offered a math faculty chair position at a local community college, gotten interviews for excellent jobs, etc. Right now I'm happy with my current gig until I continue my education. I recommend its no-nonsense approach.
The book a Technical Recruiter uses to write his own resume.......2003-03-06
I use this book when updating my own resume and when revising the resumes of others. I looked through a bunch of similar books and selected this one.
I'm ordering more copies. I gave my last one to my wife for an assistant who'd been helpful to her but was being laid off. Using this book, the woman revised her resume and got a new job at the same company making $10k/yr more - probably a 25-30% increase.
As a recruiter, I read thousands of resumes - most of them mediocre. That doesnýt mean Iým good at writing my own resume. I use the book's check lists to make sure I'm not missing anything.
I regard a resume as the best piece of work an individual will ever do. Itýs amazing what you can tell about an individual by ýreading between the linesý of his (or her) resume. What would you do with a Quality Engineer's resume that contains errors? [Toss]! Get this book and use it . . . please.
Great resume basics.......2000-10-11
If you don't know where to start with your resume, this book is one of the resources you should consider before putting pen to paper. It covers all the areas of resume writing, with plenty of do's and don'ts. Resumes are important and set the tone of your job search. Robin Ryan shows how to make the most of your efforts. The 53 common mistakes were helpful and amusing. I enjoyed the book.

I found it so difficult to write my resume. Talk about intimidated! This book took me by the hand and spoon feed me into writing the best resume I ever thought I could write. The requests for interviews are rolling in. Now my friends are asking me to write their resumes too! I've taken to doing resumes on my computer to earn extra money. Thanks Robin!
