Book Description
As dean of admissions at the University of Chicago Law School, Anna Ivey decided the fate of thousands of law school applicants. In this book-the first of its kind by a former law school admissions officer-she draws on her expertise to cover topics from the application and the essay to the interview and the recommendations, touching on hot-button issues like how much the LSAT, ethnicity, and age really matter. Offering an insider's advice on how to produce the very best application, this guide gives straight answers to questions such as:
• What kind of essay should I write to set me apart from the rest of the pack?
• Should I explain my low LSAT score, my D in chemistry, my attention deficit disorder, my time in rehab?
• Is law school worth the debt I'll face when I graduate?
Full of invaluable examples and anecdotes about real admissions decisions, The Ivey Guide to Law School Admissions is certain to become the new bible for would-be law students everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Not so good.......2007-09-12
This book is not good. There are much better books that explain what is included in the book. I would only advise buying this book if you need help in writing a request for a recommendation letter because that is the only informative section in this book.
Statement of Purpose.......2007-08-21
I bought this book hoping to receive some good advice on how to write a statement of purpose and she provided two examples. However, I was extremely disappointed when I read the examples because they are written by people who have experiences that most law school applicants don't. I haven't been in the Coast Guard for 8 years and I haven't been a researcher at a top hospital...She gives no good advice for the normal law school applicant. SKIP THIS BOOK!
Good for other programs, too........2007-08-12
I ordered this book because I was considering law school as a career change and needed some help with personal statements. The very candid information in this book actually helped me realize that law school is not the way that I want to go, but I used the information on resumes and personal statements for another application, and was easily accepted into another graduate program that will be more suited to my needs and career aspirations. I recommend this book for anyone pursuing admission to any graduate program, as a lot of the information in transferrable to other programs. And if you are considering law school, read this and you'll definitely get some perspective on whether or not it's really for you.

If only Anna Ivey would clone herself; she is needed in high school and college guidance offices in every school in the Union!
Anna Ivey is the person you want to have a leisurely lunch with while in the middle of the endurance test of admissions. Once Dean of Admissions at The University of Chicago Law School, she has seen the best and the worst of want-to-be attorneys.
She has also managed to pen the ultimate guide for anyone who aspires to become an attorney in the United States. Any question you can imagine, and many that would never occur to you, are answered by her book, "The Ivey Guide to Law School Admissions: Straight Advice on Essays, Resumes, Interviews and More."
I know what you're thinking: Yawn! No one is going to read an entire book on something as boring as law school admissions.
It's true. There are some who will use this as a reference book, and nothing more. Lucky for them the ten-page index is extensive and thorough and the information is methodically organized. You could do that and probably fair just fine.
But, glance at the contents page and Ms. Ivey will begin to draw you in with chapters such as "Damning with Faint Praise: Recommendations" and "Prestige and Price Tags: How to Pick a Law School."
What does that mean? "Damning with Faint Praise?" Who ever thought to think so hard about recommendations, besides Ms. Ivey, of course? As with all of the major and minor topics covered, Ms. Ivey covers every single, possible, itty bitty, and big fat detail that will make a difference for you when you are attempting to grab the attention of those who hold the keys to your hope of being accepted at the law school of your choosing.
She is not holding back. Once you dig in, you will realize the author's no-nonsense advice goes down easier with day dreams of diplomas. Though applying for law school is not on my immediate agenda, after reading "The Ivey Guide to Law School Admissions" I have no doubt I could not only afford to, I would wow everyone involved with the admissions process and thus have my pick of school--since they'll all be begging for this star to grace their campus with my brilliance.
That is what people will think of your admissions packet if you follow the sage advice in this book: absolutely brilliant!

It is well known that applying to law school is not an easy process or one that should be taken lightly. But it is very difficult for the average college graduate to learn all the important steps that go into the process. Anna Ivey has written the in depth guide to make the experience a more organized, successful journey to the future. As a past admissions officer, she knows what a school is looking for in a law school candidates and is able to clearing delineate the information. Any student considering the option of law school needs to get this book, preferably in their early college years. It will provide them with the inside knowledge needed to both choose and get accepted at the law school they desire. If students follow the steps as described they will be able to put forth their best efforts to meet the criteria required of them.
In straight forward language, with an ear for light humor, Ivey addresses everything from the application essay to the importance of LSAT scores and the admission interview. She points out that the process really begins way before college graduation. The choice of colleges, major and school activities will all affect student's chances of having a future as an attorney. Ivey explains how schools select candidates, what they look for and how to best present onesself to them. . Ms Ivey is able to give a huge amount of information in this clear, easy to follow guide in well designed chapters that follow the process chronologically. This is the comprehensive road map for a successful journey into law school
The useful information in this book is also valuable for students who are considering other fields. Her chapters on resumes, interviewing and recommendations can easily translate into other careers. Chapter 3 "Bring Tears-of Joy!- to Their Eyes The Application Essay" with its sample essays included in the appendix should be included in high school English curriculum for seniors. Many of her pointers are relevant for high school students during their college application process. Although this would be a welcomed additon to high school libraries and guidance offices, it would be wonderful if Ms Ivey would consider writing an edition specifically for this audience.

Customer Reviews:
Simple, Great Examples.......2005-08-18
The books is organized into small chapters with great example resumes and a list of key words. It allow you to improve you IT resume in a short amount of time and even have suggestion on where to start if you are new to IT.
The Best, don't look further.......2005-01-11
I read this book so fast, the way it was written was so interesting and easy, evey single question I had in mind was answered, nothing is left! I loved the book, unfortunately I cannot get the Ace the IT INTERVIEW book, because it is not available in my area, but I would definetly the interview book too! by the way there is a very good chapter about interview in this book!
four little things i hated about this book:
- much more of network than software development ! but it is ok coz most careers are in Network administration.
- in a resume there was: Modem Software!!, this is called Browser...!
- adding Norton AntiVirus in an IT resume is something stupid!
- PHP and C-Sharp: top programming lanuges not mentioned in the book!
In the market for an IT job? Get this book!.......2004-12-28
This book's objective is to land you an interview. Before reading this book I could only say I had 1 maybe 2 interviews total in a period of a few months. After reading this book and using some of its suggestions I have had several more.
Overall I'd rate it a 4.8 since I feel that Paula is a bit too forward with some of her suggestions (for example closing statements on cover letters that are a bit overboard imo).
But that's my only complaint =)
No matter your position in life be it a freshout of college or an experienced IT vet who's looking for something different, this book will pay for itself many times over.
Ace the IT Resume!.......2004-01-15
This book is excellent!!! If you think your resume is good, think again. Follow the steps in this book and you'll see a totally new person. I used it in conjunction with Ace the IT Job Interview and it got me a job.
Absolutely Horrifying!.......2003-11-24
I do not know where these women got their credentials, but they are WAY off the mark! DO NOT LIE ON YOUR RESUME! No matter what this book recommends! For instance, the authors state: "If your offical title is Tech Level I, you might be responsible for database administration, PC support, and webmaster duties. If you're hoping to move into DBA, list 'database administrator' as the job title and as the first bullet describe your responsibilities in this function." Wrong, wrong, wrong! As a hiring manager and interviewer, if I discover you lied about your job title, especially when you were a Tech I and you claimed to be a DBA, I will wonder what else you lied about. And believe me, I'll find out when I call your previous employers to verify your employment history. No, instead, when in this situation, downplay, emphasize the job title you want, and even omit your job titles, and use the opportunity to emphasize your skills. That way, even if you don't have the right job title, you can demonstrate to me that it doesn't matter. But NEVER, EVER lie or deliberately mislead anyone. Then they'll just feel like you were trying to trick them, which is NOT very impressive.

Not a big fan.......2007-10-21
I bought 6 books about Pharm sales, this was my least favorite. I don't like the way it is written (format of the text)I did not find any information in this book that can support the high price.
Recommend to all Applicants.......2007-01-10
This book was very informative and also recommended by my wife's hiring company, Eli Lilly.
Like having your own interview consultant.......2006-03-02
Ms. Alexander provides a great source of help with her PharmRepSelect book and CDs. I read a couple of books on the subject and found the PharmRepSelect Interview Insight discs to be tremendously helpful. I combined several books in my mission of getting a job in this field. For under a hundred dollars, I feel that I got the best info available. It's like hiring an interview consultant; hours and hours of help. I listened to mock interviews and practiced my techniques. I learned how to phrase my answers more precisely and sound very professional, which was the key in doing well on my interviews. I recommend this unique package to everyone interviewing for a sales job. Five stars!
Gold!! Keeps you in the game! Got me my Job!! .......2006-02-23
PharmRepSelect landed me the job of my dreams. PharmRepSelect is written by an expert in the field that actually knows how to communicate information that will keep you from giving up! The real reason PharmRepSelect is different and better then the other books on the same subject is that it gives Encouragement. Out of the other four books I read about getting one of these jobs, it was only PharmRepselect book and Interview Insight CDs that made me feel the most confident and motivated to achieve my goal. None of the other books I read had this effect. In a job market that is crowded and frustrating with masses of people applying and interviewing, its very easy to give up. This kept me in the game. Of course this book is loaded with inside information, the dos and don'ts, but the big difference is the encouragement factor. If you give up on the interview process, you won't get the job. I landed my job offer because I did not give up. PharmRepSelect explained the mechanics of how these managers choose candidates and how to overcome these obstacles. I credit PharmRepSelect book, audio book and Interview Insight audio CD for landing me a job I thought I would never get! I was able to look, sound and act like the perfect candidate. Now I have the perfect job. This book and CDs are gold.
Not Worth the Money.......2006-02-22
This book was not what I expected at all. I thought the information was very general and there were far too many pages devoted to answering questions (where you fill in the blanks) and not enough real information provided by the author.

Book Description
An informative and up-to-date resource for job seekers who are looking for solid direction from Fortune 500 executives. War, recession, and political uncertainty have forced many corporations to regroup, and downsizing has been the dreaded outcome for millions of workers. Fired and laid-off employees are swelling the ranks of job seekers and creating stiff competition for a dwindling number of positions. In this harsh business climate, many applicants are finding that just getting in the door for an interview poses an enormous challenge.
So what's happening on the other side of the desk-as employers review huge piles of prospective resumes? What catches their attention? What turns them off? Author Brenda Greene surveyed 50 Fortune 500 employers to find out and gained valuable insight into just what it takes to command attention and interest in a crowded field. Packed with sample resumes and cover letters that represent what hiring managers, directors, and vice presidents want to see, Get the Interview Every Time shows and tells what's expected versus what's rejected.
Readers will learn how to:
• Research the company and its opportunities before sending any resumes.
• Distill all of their talent and experience into a few well-chosen words.
• Showcase their communication skills through a well- crafted cover letter.
• Avoid hype and ""resume-speak""-easily spotted and reviled.
• Determine the resume style that looks and works the best.
• Design and submit an electronic resume correctly.
Get the Interview Every Time breaks down the monumental task of landing an interview into a series of manageable steps, easy to understand and inspiring to follow. Designed to transform confused, disheartened job applicants into savvy, prospective employees, Get the Interview Every Time shows how to ""open the gates"" through sensible, targeted self-marketing.
Customer Reviews:
More comprehensive than other résumé/cover letter books.......2007-10-05
This book is more comprehensive than other job hunting books in that it explains the basics of job searching, professional résumés, and cover letters very well. It gives some advice on where to search for jobs, networking, and how to send in job applications via electronic and written formats. If you are only going to buy one book to prepare for a job search and the application process, I would recommend this book over several others.
The downside of this book is that it does little to prepare you for the modern inevitability of having to submit your application through a standardized and faceless corporate website. Any advice on formatting your résumé, writing a cover letter, or writing professional contact emails is unnecessary when companies force you to "spray and pray" your application to their non-communicative and poorly staffed HR departments. Nothing is more discouraging than having your perfect cover letter and résumé butchered by having to fill in standardized forms on the web.
Excellent Resource.......2007-01-04
This book was very helpful. It has a lot of examples of cover letters and resumes. Also, it has comments from actual hiring managers and some contradict each other. That is helpful because it shows that not all HR departments feel the same way about resumes and the key is to appeal to as many as you can.
Excellent Resource.......2006-03-14
This book was very well done. There are many sample resumes in the back and also sample cover letters. The content of the book explained what to put on your resume and cover letter and what employers are looking for. This is a great resource for anyone looking for some guidance on how to develop their resume and cover letter.
Excellent Layout.......2006-02-25
Excellent presentation of the material in an easy to follow format. Allows the reader to pinpoint exact areas of interest, and contains only information pertainent to the title.
A must have for writing resumes with confidence and skill.
Incredible Resource.......2005-09-14
I highly recommend this book for people who want a complete approach to finding a new job. The author took the time to interview tons of HR people at top-notch companies and share valuable insights with the reader.

Excellent resume resource for those without a clue.......2007-08-25
This book will undoubtedly save time for those who are frustrated by the process of writing their own resume. Having reviewed more resumes than I can count at this point, I can fully appreciate the value in showing people how to scrutinize their own work. The trouble that I've found is that people are too close to their own histories to do a really good job of marketing themselves. They know too much. What this book shows as much as anything is that getting a professional review on a resume is worth the price.
Good Value.......2002-07-17
I found the book to be very helpful. It had some useful tips and sample resumes and cover letters. One of the best books of its type I've ever seen

Customer Reviews:
This book is *GOLD* --- Read this Review!---- A++++++++.......2006-11-21
I'm writing this review because the previous comment by "Chris S." is wrong. This isnt a book you should "read in one night" and it is not just general information. This book is an insider's GUIDE to pharm sales, not the insider's guide to info on pharma companies. The guy doesn't know what he's talking about. This book has EVERYTHING you need to know about getting into pharm. sales. It's the one stop book of info. that will give you exact interview questions, complete overview of the entire interview process, in depth explanations of what's expected of a pharm. sales rep, and a good overview of well, everything. It's almost like sitting with a pharm. sales rep and asking him/her questions. I was a college grad with barely any sales experience. I had a friend in pharm. sales who recommended this book, and with the help of the book and my friend, I was able to get through 6 VERY competitive interviews with a pharma powerhouse company. Again, I didn't have any professional sales experience. I bought other pharm sale books as well and returned them. Nothing compares to this book. If your looking to get into the world of pharmaceutical sales, just like the title says, then this book is for you. Don't pass it by and if you get the interview, don't for to ABC - Always Be Closing!
Best information when combined with PharmRepSelect CDs.......2005-12-06
Four stars to Jane Williams for writing a comprehensive text like book on getting a job in pharmaceutical sales. Excellent content but could have been a bit more original in both style and format. I chose this book because after reading the reviews it promised to be the most comprehensive guide available. I was not dissappointed, but in order to be the most comprehensive information, I also ordered PharmRepSelect audio book CD and Interview Insight CD along with this book. Good choice, because it provides different view points from authors with different styles and experience.I recommend information on different formats, keeps it way less boring, together this is a five star package! Thanks to Insider's Guide book and PharmRepSelect audio CDs I aced my interview and now work for a pharmaceutical company selling anti cancer drugs. Going to work is rewarding and I thank these authors for their help in getting me a career I enjoy.
This book is the bomb!!!.......2004-04-22
Okay people, I bought the book 3 months ago, and I must say it is the bomb!!! I have no sales experience, but this book guided me step by step. It even gives you various scenarios with various answers. It is outstanding for a newcomer to the industry. Take heed and get the book!! I wanted the newest edition, but it hadn't come out yet and I was desperate to begin my research. I had 2 interviews with the same company--I was referred by my pharmaceutical sales rep friend--and I believe they went well. I am waiting to proceed to the next step, which is with the district manager. Needless to say, I was overly prepared. The binder the book suggests you put together totally "WOWED" the interviewer. 2 words...THE BOMB!
New Pharmaceutical Sales Representative!.......2004-02-24
What a superior career guide! After looking at several books, I found Ms. Williams' Insider's Guide... and used it to prepare for a pharmaceutical sales career. Three weeks after buying the guide, I have a job with Pfizer!! There is no way that I could have prepared for those FIVE interviews without the Insider's Guide... I wasn't surprised by a single interview question. This book is the best investment I've ever made. I can't recommend it enough to anyone who wants a career in pharmaceutical sales.
Absolutely fantastic!.......2004-02-24
As a professional sales consultant, I am always looking for books that I can utilize as a consultant. The new 7th Edition of the "Insider's Guide..." is absolutely fantastic! This book offers excellent advice on networking, the pharmaceutical industry and the new physician call guidelines for pharmaceutical sales representatives, understanding the interview process, using personality profiling to your advantage, 150 specific detailed pharmaceutical sales interview questions and answers as well as major pharmaceutical company profiles and contract sales organizations contact information.
The book is very well written, professionally edited, and reflects the author's credibility. It is easy to see why this book is being utilized by college and university sales and marketing professors for their sales and marketing courses and special sales classes.

Book Description
For the first time ever, here's a resume book that clears away the clutter and gets down to the "brass tacks" of what it takes to write and design a resume that will get you interviews and job offers. Authors and professional resume writers Wendy Enelow and Arnold Boldt share their insights, knowledge and more than 35 years of combined experience to help you prepare a resume that will get you noticed, not passed over.
No-Nonsense Resumes begins with a thorough but easy-to-understand explanation of the key elements that are vital to creating an "attention-grabbing" resume, including how to:
Strategically "position" your resume Showcase your skills and achievements Format and design a professional-looking resume Select and integrate key words Prepare and distribute your electronic resume
Subsequent chapters offer specific tips on creating winning resumes for job opportunities in virtually every profession: Administration & Clerical; Accounting, Banking & Finance; Government; Health Care & Social Services; Hospitality Management & Food Service; Human Resources & Training; Law Enforcement & Legal; Manufacturing & Operations; Sales, Marketing & Customer Service; Skilled Trades; and Technology, Science & Engineering. Included in each chapter are sample resumes contributed by leading resume writers and career consultants worldwide.

A great buy - very worthwhile!.......2006-12-31
Finally, a career book that delivers on its "no nonsense" promise, and then some. This is truly among the very best I've found. Concise and to the point, without all the hocus-pocus stuff that just devours time, the authors get right down to business and actually show you how to build a quality resume. How refreshing! I've read a lot of resume & career advice books, and they're all pretty much full of great philosophy ("do what you love; find your true calling" type stuff) but they're not very helpful when it comes to actually getting a real job. If the goal is to write yourself a resume that really expresses what you can do for an employer, in your own words, then this one's for you. (And there are some great sample resumes, too...)
Thanks to the authors for finally getting it right! I can only assume their No Nonsense Cover Letters book is equally excellent...

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Guide.......2006-10-12
The CD served me as a wonderful guide for my first job-hunting experience.
It helped me develop a detailed image of the interview process and build confidence.
It also gave me the opportunity to review basic, yet important facts that peole tend to forget at the time of the interview.
WASTE OF MONEY.......2006-08-06
Do NOT waste your money on this CD! Most of the content was soft mediation simply telling you to visualize yourself as 'confident' in an interview... over and over and over. The rest of the 'inside tips' were so basic, it was no more than common sense (ie. don't be late for the interview).
A Great Reference.......2006-03-04
I was fortunate enough to see Mr. David Portney speak at a Career Fair in Los Angels. Mr. Portney is a dynamic speaker with great information and enthusiasm. At that time, I purchased his CD "The Secret of How to Ace Any Job Interview with Confidence". I have listened to it a number of times and have replayed certain chapters back as refreshers. It contains relevant information on the interview process and enables you to build your confidence. The section on building confidence and reducing nervousness is most helpful. There are many other tips included that can make your interview go smoothly. I highly recommend this CD to newbies and veterans alike.
A Must Have.......2006-02-28
Trust me when I say it is the little things we forget or worse assume we know when it comes to interviewing. This CD is a great asset to own whether you need to brush up on a few things or it is your first time entering the working world. I bought this for my son to help him when he decided he wanted to get a job. I have also had the pleasure of attending a class by David. The CD is just as great and informative as he is in person.
Interview Like a Pro!.......2006-02-27
This is a very useful program for building confidence - whether you're a first-time job hunter or an experienced pro! I highly recommend it.
