5 out of 5 stars The Directory of Executive Recruiters review.......2007-10-19

This directory is a "must have" for job seekers and networkers. Keep it in your personal library and use it year after year. It's well worth the money.

2 out of 5 stars The Petersen Review.......2007-10-01

The Good - This book is organized in such a way that you can referernce by preference. The Bad - Due to major turnover in the recruiting industry some of the information contained may not be valid by the time you have purchased and opened the book. The Bottom-Line is that despite some firms no longer being in busness, this remains a great reference tool to have. (Smiles) - Karen A Petersen (Orlando Florida 10/01/2007)

5 out of 5 stars The "Gold Standard" Reference for Job Seekers Contacting Search Firms.......2007-05-12

1 out of 5 stars not helpful.......2007-09-30

After a quick scan this book was returned as it offered very little insight to the individual colleges that could not easily be picked up online. The information provided had no depth as comments were very standardized.

1 out of 5 stars Another con-job off the presses.......2007-01-31

I am a person with a disability who holds both an undergraduate and masters degree. These guide books are among the most misleading things I have ever come across. They continue insisting that college accommodations are only available at certain institutions---completely ignoring reality which says they are actually available everywhere.

I entered and successfully completed both my degrees only because I came in already knowing my legal rights and responsibilities. I always recognized that I still would receive accommodations in college, but also that the college environment is covered by a different set of laws than my public school special education classes.

Because all colleges are required to admit otherwise qualified students with a disability and make reasonable accommodations in academics and facilities, these guides are nothing more than a slick con-job for (primarily) gullible parents who aren't up to date on either the law or their child's obligation (if they weren't already doing it!) to be a self-advocate for their own accommodations at college.

In the post-secondary environment, the disability office (regardless of size/staff) is not going to come after students for their initial registration for services or the each semester's re-registration to receive accommodations in specific classes. It is also the student's responsibility to talk with the professor about the accommodations they will need in the class.

It breaks my heart to receive letters from people continuing to make dangerous assumptions, but as long as the books remain in print, I realize errors will repeat. Readers initially might not know better, but I've got to wonder about the conscience of the authors--how can they honestly sleep at night after publishing blatantly inaccurate falsehoods which well-intentioned people attempt taking to heart in the absence of correct information?

What next, a guide to colleges with gravity and/or running water?

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2004-06-14

This book has a lot of information, much more than I expected. Another book, the K&W Guide to Collegesfor Students with Disabilities, was not useful at all.

I wish this book came with a CD or online search tool so you could search on specifics, but it has a good index.

4 out of 5 stars Better information than I expected.......2002-08-11

Ok, so this book wasn't a life changer; but it did in providing me with useful information. The book begins by warning you that it can be easily dated, because programs come and go. I think as long as you maintain that reference, a lot of information can be gathered.

3 out of 5 stars Re-title this book!.......2000-07-02

This book should have been titled "You're Certifiable....Job Opportunities IF YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA". I thought it was a fabulous book, but truly, it's not much use if you don't live on the West Coast.

5 out of 5 stars For someone looking for a personally fulfilling career.......1999-08-09

I bought this book for the 21 year old daughter of a friend. She had dropped out of college, complaining that nothing there really interested her. I discovered this book while browsing amazon.com, ordered it, and decided it was perfect for her. After she looked through it, she decided to apply for a school that taught animal massage (she's been crazy about animals since she was a child). She completed the program and is now happily working at a local kennel offering massages to companion animals.

The book lists about 700 other alternative career programs, covering 10 other areas ranging from crafts, arts, outdoors interests, healing, etc. The programs are described succinctly and information is provided on how to follow up. In the beginning of the book, the authors provide a nice introduction to the whole concept of alternative careers (how to find what interests someone, etc.)

Really, it would be a worthwile gift for someone who is looking for a way to make a living that is a little "different", but personally gratifying.

3 out of 5 stars Great overview except for Peace Corps bias.......2007-07-22

I am a former PC volunteer (RPCV) so my review may be considered jaded but the overview of the PC I found to be detailed and full of useful information but with many negative comments. A good example is the statement that, "the Peace Corps is overwhelmingly made up of young, inexperienced people fresh out of college." This struck me as odd since, for example, the authors load praise on WorldTeach for placing "volunteers with little or no teaching experience (and) WorldTeach succeeds in getting its volunteers started as teachers." So, it's okay for WT but not for PC?

I know as one of those who was "fresh out of college" that the Peace Corps did an outstanding job of teacher training and our group had many retired teachers who acted as mentors. Yes, my experience is just in one program and the Peace Corps is big so the situations can vary, for sure, but I would like people considering overseas opportunities to consider all programs. Now having worked in a variety of work situations in my adult life, I realize: bad bosses and inadequate training and, on the reverse, fantastic working conditions and fabulous perks exist and these programs are not immune to any of that.

Good luck to anyone seeking such an experience and, good, bad, or otherwise, it will change your perception of your host country, American culture, and, most profoundly, yourself.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2007-03-15

There are so many volunteer opportunities available that I really didn't know where to start my search. This book is a terrific resource. It goes into exactly the detail I was looking for: nature of the work, country, cost, what type of volunteer a particular group suits and how to get started. My daughter, who is in college, loved it as well ... and has begun exploring volunteer opportunities, too. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide, but kind of dry for everyday reading........2006-12-15

This guide is very informative, but I was hoping it give me a better idea of what it's like to volunteer overseas, and how I could get involved. It's got good references, but I didn't really learn anything that I didn't already know before.

5 out of 5 stars This book was my bible..........2006-01-13

I did extensive research before going overseas to volunteer, and this book was my bible, beacon, guiding light, whatever you want to call it. It answered questions I didn't even know I had, and opened my eyes to the various ways I could accomplish a goal that, at the beginning, I thought had very few options for accomplishment. The appendix is incredibly thorough, and that alone could be a great resource. This book changed my ideas about how I wanted to volunteer, and in the end I completely restructured my plan and had a wonderful experience abroad. I would have felt very lost without this resource..

4 out of 5 stars Socially responsible guide to volunteering.......2005-10-30

If you have a good heart, are curious about other cultures, and are new to volunteering, the opening section of this book may come as a bit of a shock.

First, volunteering isn't free. Most volunteer placement organizations require substantial fees (usually $1,000 plus) to arrange for your food, accommodation, and provide basic training.

Second, altruism, when applied to international development, isn't always helpful. There's a beautiful example of this in Chapter 3. You imagine that three volunteer groups from around the world come to Washington DC to help the city develop and get past its problems of violence and poverty. The first group is from Zambia- they identify the problem as a shortage of churches, and lack of respect for elders. The second group is from the Amazon- they propose knocking down skyscrapers to add more green space. The third group is a Rastafarian youth organization- they criticize the focus on power and money, and help DC by training politicians to grow ganja.

Similarly, the best intentions of American volunteers aren't always welcomed or even potentially helpful abroad unless they are developed in the context of the host culture.

From this point, the book describes the practical logistics of volunteering abroad- from fundraising to support your trip, learning about your host country, preparing for your travel, and ultimately being an effective volunteer.

The bulk of the book focuses on organizational profiles of volunteer organizations. These are extraordinarily helpful as critical analyses of many such organizations, and should help you navigate through the bewildering maze of opportunities. Unfortunately, the "over 100" organizations that they profile are just a fraction of what's out there, and there's really no easy way to navigate through these. There are a few indexes in the back (organizations offering short term programs, organizations placing volunteers in Latin America, etc), but there's no easy way to look for volunteer opportunities in a specific country, for example. If this organizational profile guide was online or on a CD, it would be infinitely more useful (and cheaper to publish...)

    Book Description

For 30 years, BEAR'S GUIDE TO EARNING DEGREES BY DISTANCE LEARNING is the most comprehensive, respected, and opinionated guide to the potential minefield of non-traditional education. It 's often faster, cheaper, and even better to earn an associate's, bachelor's, master's, doctorate, medical, or law degree off campus. As more schools bring the classroom to the student through mail, video, and the internet, the need for an accurate, up-to-date, and technically savvy resource is more crucial than ever. This is the guide for anyone looking to advance a stalled career, return to the workforce, or take the next step to advance his or her education.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Helpful, informative book........2007-06-27

This book provides information concerning many avenues of online learning in a convenient, useful format. It's a great source of information for the person who is just considering options as well as one who has already decided to take the plunge.

3 out of 5 stars inaccurate in places. preachy about accreditation in others.......2007-02-26

After ripping on many, many schools that are not "accredited", the book goes on to mention, how you can get a "real" credit by buying a persian rug. Because everyone knows how difficult it is to buy a rug, let alone a Persian one.

Anyway bears lists "accredited schools with degrees entirely by distance learning"
and lists Alberta's Athabasca U as an "accredited school" = the have been open for a number of years and only in 2005 did the received accreditation- just look it up on their site. So basically if your school is "unaccredited" they you don't have a real degree, tell that to Royal Roads, UBC, Uvic, Uof Manitoba, and on an on. Because if you read the "university and college act" you will know that you can accredit yourselves, mind you with a bunch of paper work. oh, Devrey accredits themselves, so their degrees are not worth the paper they are printed on.

IF you want to look at the world of education the way the book looks at it, you are limiting yourself. Education should be just that an education, but whether you come out of UBC or Harvard with an undergrad, you basically know nothing. Ever have to write a 500 word essay at your current job? most of you can say no.

I say revamp the system and get to the meat of the degree in 2 years or less- of a a 4 year degree 2-3 years of it is spent entirely on basic courses.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2006-12-14

If you are looking for a resource that will provide literally thousands of addresses (snail mail, e-mail, web addresses, phone numbers) with a brief annotation about each school that offers distance learning, then this is an excellent resource. If you are wanting to learn the very basics of accreditation of online schools, this will be a starting point. If you want a detailed, technical look at online learning and about higher education accreditatiion, this is not the purpose of Bears Guide.

Reviewer: Dr. Kellemen is the author of Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction.

5 out of 5 stars best seller from an author formerly involved with unaccredited schools.......2006-05-21

"A degree is often more useful than a good education or valuable skills in your field." (the authors, pg. 3)
"One man's degree mill is another man's alternative university." (the authors. Bears' Guide, 13th Edition. pg 306)
'People rarely check up on other people's degrees." (John Bear, Bear's Guide, 10th Ed., pg 24)
I think these quotes encapsulate John Bear's strategy and view of higher education. "alternative" is altedspeak code for "unaccredited." John Bear is correct on the second point - outright degree mills on the one end of the continuum shade into sincere but unrecognized alternative/unaccredited universities at the other. I myself would say they're all bogus - whether degree mills or "alternative/unaccredited" universities. John Bear by his own admission involved himself in his past with a string of unaccredited "universities/colleges" in states with lax or non-existent laws governing degree-granting colleges/universities.
Such unaccredited schools - according to some sources - were: MILLARD FILMORE (owner); INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES ( President, 3 years); COLUMBIA PACIFIC ( part owner); LONDON INSTITUTE OF APPLIED RESEARCH (owner); FAIRFAX UNIVERSITY ( part owner/founder); GREENWICH UNIVERSITY ( President, 1,5 years ).

It is instructive to consider the case of Fairfax University: John Bear and his wife were two of four founders, but left after the first few students enrolled in 1986. As of 1991, John Bear was calling this an "academically-sound program" in the previous version of this book. Here's what Fairfax University's current website advertising says: "Degree programs offered at Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral levels. Personal supervision by mail, telephone, etc by...highly qualified..faculty. No residency or written examination requirements. Work at own pace from home. Credits awarded for prior learning, training. Average duration of programs is 6-18 months." Sounds a lot like ads for a school for cartoonists. Fairfax is not accredited. The degree-granting authority comes from Louisiana, which has notoriously lax regulations, but the school itself is apparently in England with only a secretarial drop-office in Louisiana (all information from Bears' books). Posting on a message board on 1-28-2003, mr.Bear wrote "Don't even think of applying to Fairfax, unless you are comfortable with a degree whose use would be a criminal offense in New Jersey, Oregon, Illinois, etc".

Other alternative education enthusiasts favor loosening the traditional link between the bachelor's degree and the three or four years of on-campus study necessary to attain the degree. They want evaluations of "course equivalents" and credits for "life" experience - John Bear himself suggests that riding a horse, eating at an exotic restaurant, "applying statistics to gambling" (I like that one - a subscription to Racing Form ?...Bear is nothing if not droll) and reading his [Bear's] books "could" be worth credit for life experience learning (Bear's Guide 10th Edition). In my view, this "life assessment model" will have the same effect on university degrees as the dumbing-down of high school education did for the high school graduation diploma - render it untrustworthy. I note the US Armed Forces do not believe the GED is worth even as much as an high school diploma. I believe the same will happen with the bachelor's degree if large numbers of students start earning their degrees by "challenge" or "life assessment" or other bogus non-residential forms advocated by Dr. Bear. Incidentally, the bogus- sorry, "alternative"-degree community has a home on the internet. John Bear is guru-in-residence, but it appears his followers are predominantly trailer park residents and third-rate academics, judging by their incoherent postings.
This brings us to the book - "College Degrees by Mail & Modem." Bear's predecessor to this book - "100 College Degrees By Mail - Good Schools that offer Bachelor's Master's Doctorates, and Law Degrees by Home Study" - was a disgrace, in my opinion. Of the recommended "good" schools, about 97 were accredited, and 22 were non-accredited. Among John Bear's recommended "good" schools was "Eurotechnical Research University" of Hilo, Hawaii. (Hawaii at that time and still now does not have effective legislation to prohibit bogus schools). This school was run out of two rooms in the founder's home. John Bear admits to being a friend of the founder (since deceased) and an advisor to the "university." Yet John Bear didn't notice, until a Hawaiian reporter pointed it out, that an outright diploma mill (Leiland College) operated from a Hawaii post office box opened by the founder. Eurotechnical Research University at last report is now affiliated with a karate school, and the street address is a mailbox rental service. Several other unaccredited schools in Bears list of "good" schools have turned out to be "less-than-wonderful" or gone out of business. Bear himself notes that several legitimate schools have pleaded not to be mentioned in his books.Incidentally, John Bear himself was president of an unaccredited school - "Greenwich University" for eighteen months in Hilo, in the period 1990-1991. This and his other school of that time - a institution-in-planning temporarily called "School Without a Name" were also in Bear's recommended list of good schools.

5 out of 5 stars Exemplary, Exhaustive, Honorable, Refreshingly Candid.......2006-05-05

Arm yourself with this lastest, updated version of Bears Guide before diving into the murky world of earning a degree through distance learning, particularly advanced degrees. It's exemplary and exhaustive in its research and useful database, the authors are honorable and refreshingly straight-talking - their candor will help you read between the lines of legality some questionable institutions engage in. You'll learn who's doing non-residency or semi-resident education, who's offering what degrees or fields of study, and who's reputable.

Bears Guides have been around for years, undergoing frequent revisions, championing distance learning, and exposing the crooks of diploma mills.

I want to counteract comments made in another (2003) review that seemed to disparage the integrity of author John Bear (whose daughter, Mariah, is carrying on his work with Nichols in these books). Bear is a founder of Degree.net, which I'd recommend as an adjunct resource to this book. He, and all the earlier versions of this book, have done a LOT to debunk and expose diploma mills to the general public. Other than the state of Oregon (which has a helpful website), no other entity in the U.S. has done - or is doing - as much.

Here's a quote from Wired Magazine news in March 2000:
"[Diploma mills] are growing, especially on the Internet, at astonishing rates," agrees John Bear, founder of Degree.net. Bear has witnessed the dark side of the distance-education boom up close. A former consultant, informant, and expert witness for the FBI's task force operation DipScam in the 1980s, he helped shut down a number of diploma mills over a 12-year period."

That quote alone should help - and hopefully my review, too. The layout of Bears Guide is reader-friendly and makes a complex subject accessible. And it's frequently updated/revised. So unlike the Peterson guide, there's barely a comparison between the two.

5 out of 5 stars The Internship Bible for Animation, #1.......2002-06-03

I found this book to be the Bible for finding an internship in animation. Lots of animation companies, great descriptions of the companies, and advice on writing my resume. I was able to find an internship in the field. I highly recommend this book for high school seniors and college students in CG. I also recommend "Careers in Computer Graphics and Animation" these are two well needed resources.

      5 out of 5 stars very useful.......2001-12-23

This books was very helpful in identifying the companies where I can apply for an internship. I live in Los Angeles but did not know how to locate and contact the companies in my area. This is a very useful book!!!

2 out of 5 stars Misleading Title, Mixed Content.......2001-09-29

In purchasing this book, I had little information to guide me beforehand; I made the decision based on commentary on other works by this author, the title, and my need for information on internships in this field.

I found myself greviously disappointed. While the information capsules about the employers are indeed helpful, no specifics were given for internships these employers might or might not offer. Instead, the contents of the book (aside from some prefatory material providing poor advice about resumes and cover letters) act as a directory to employers. While I am not discounting the helpfulness of such a directory, the misleading title and the quality of the prefatory material leave this reader with a very low opinion the party responsible for misleadingly marketing this volume.

4 out of 5 stars A good start in the career selection process.......2005-12-06

Starting a career the day after you graduate from college is one thing. Selecting a career track before you start college is another. This book, The Complete Guide to Environmental Careers in the 21st Century, is a helpful step in crystalizing your thinking.

With the explosive growth of the worldwide web, there are many, many resources available to help in this major selection process. However, this book focuses on the natural resource careers, and is fairly unique in that regard. I read the chapters dealing with my area of expertise (wildlife), and I thought the coverage was adequate, but a bit too generic. Picky, picky. I still found myself agreeing with what I was reading. I also liked the introductory chapters, and appreciated the focus on getting experience through internships and volunteering. I'd like students to do some exploring in their selection of courses, and "cross-train," or become multidisiplinary. Most students change their major at least once in their college careers, and many change their major several times. Be well grounded, and flexible in the courses you take.

Don't forget, however, that experitse is critical for success. It is not the degree that will propel you along your career track. It is what you know, how well you know it, and how you apply this information that will shape your success.

Most importantly, if you DON'T like the careers discussed in this book, switch majors now!

3 out of 5 stars Outdated but still good.......2004-06-17

I suppose this is what you get when you order online. Every once in a while you don't get what you expect and I think it has a lot to do with not having the book right there in your hands before purchase. I just got this book in the mail yesterday and although I haven't got through a lot of it (50 pages or so) I can easily tell it was before Lil' Bush Jr. stepped into office and started rewriting environmental law in favor of big business favor. The book also talks (obviously) about predictions and trends in the field that may or may not still be true. I find myself reading saying "oh thats interesting, i wonder if its still true.

I know much of it has to do with me not noticing the pub. date but when you have a book with 21st century in the title I guess I kind of took it for granted.

5 out of 5 stars A clearly written comprehensive guide that anyone can use.......2000-07-16

This is THE book to buy on careers in the environment. It details almost any profession you can think of, from science to social work. There are clear decsriptions off all the various careers, case studies (ie" a day in the life of John Doe, Botanist")and tons of contact foe everyone from the high school student to a PHD. I bought three books on the subject, and this one coveres all the information that was in the other two, plus it gives hints on how to go about preparing for and engaging in the job search. I am now well on my way to finding a job, and I have a clear sense of direction thanks to this book. BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT- YOU DON'T NEED ANY OTHERS!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to environmental career paths.......1999-01-29

This book is a superb guide to what is often a confusing jumble of environmental career paths. From forestry to hazardous waste management to environmental education, the authors at the Environmental Careers Organization give detailed information about 11 major fields of work. In each field, they discuss major trends, career niches, salary ranges, appropriate educational background, and mini case studies. Introductory chapters have excellent advice on the job search. The annotated listings of professional assocations and other resources at the end of each chapter are by themselves worth the price of the book. Anyone considering a career in environment should have this book.
