Book Description
In this exciting, full-color book, Stephen Pite creates a collaborative forum aimed at engaging readers in digital design while offering a point of entry into a process in which innovation and communication are being continually refined. Central to the book is a series of progressively challenging projects, ranging from traditional print to sophisticated websites, interactive CD-ROMs and multimedia, and 3-D motion graphics. Heavily illustrated with compelling work by students enrolled in Graphic Design programs across the U.S., The Digital Designer takes readers step-by-step through the design process with unprecedented attention to developing and refining the design concept, as well as the execution strategy. Narrative solicited directly from Graphic Design instructors accompanies illustrations of high-quality student work, helping to explain and reinforce important digital design principles and methods. The result is a book that empowers 21st century Graphic Designers, enabling them to work effectively across a wide range of fully digital and exponentially expansive media as they promote goods and services and build links between present and future.
Customer Reviews:
The other books.......2006-01-09
Unfortunatly I arrived at Virginia Commonwealth University's graphic design program after Phil Meggs had passed away. His legacy still lives on. Rob Carter on the other hand has been my professor. He is a great man who pushes his students into experimenting and becoming comfortable with their own styles of design. He is by no means a "stuffy" guy. I have some of their books and I don't have one problem with them at all.
By the way, this book is a good one!
A Very Useful Book.......2002-12-18
The Digital Designer is a quality publication , plus it covers enough ground to be useful in all of the classes we teach, so students going through the program will probably keep it and use it in several classes.
Your text is written in a friendly, accessible tone, and is a relief from some of the stuffy "Design is the Center of the Universe" books out there. As an example stuffy books are anything by Stephen Heller, Phil Meggs, or Rob Carter.
Their books are really good, of course, but frankly too focused on defining design as an official profession. Their books to me always seem like they are stiffly trying to define design as a formal, codified, yet creative event.
You seem to have achieved that friendly informative tone with ease. Kudos to you on your well resolved text. Frankly, this book is more useful to our program than any Rob Carter book, because of its accessibility.

Windows Architecture I & II MCSD Study Guide by Bruce T. Prendergast is a single-volume reference to all of the technologies and techniques measured in examinations 70-160 and 70-161--the required components of the Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD) certification curriculum. This massive, 1,533-page volume is written for serious study rather than quick test preparation. The author covers each topic in depth, building on previous chapters as he goes in order to assemble your expert knowledge for the exams.
This masterwork of Windows wisdom is a combination of very detailed technical information, reminiscence on the history of PC architecture development, and the author's own frank perspectives on where the technology is headed. The text is complemented well by numerous architectural diagrams, pertinent code listings, iconic conventions, and a companion CD-ROM that contains an electronic version of the book and a test simulation program. --Steven Plain

Customer Reviews:
Good volume, little substance.......2001-01-04
Good volume but very little substance. The author's description are too esoteric and laced with lots of errors. The editorial team did very little in terms of proofreading and correcting typos.
Terrible book.......2000-01-08
Although I'm not yet done reading the book, it seems terrible to me. I'm not really sure how much of what is presented in the book (and in which detail) is required for the exams, but I do know that as one who has some COM background, I am having a hard time following the author. As was said in other reviews - the material is visually presented in a very poor way.
3 stars for content, none for clarity of example.......1999-04-07
Something as complex as COM technology requires diagrams that show every step, from client call through each interface request, instantiation and moniker bind. This book has one picture with a phalanx of arrows and circles , where several diagrams are required. His mostly textual explanations leave out steps that were explained in previous chapters, but again, explained just as poorly. I have no complaints of excess material in the book. It's always good to have more than you need, and I can't agree with those who want a list of test answers. But I've written enough instructional material to know that people have three prime learning channels - text-audio (hearing & reading), visual (diagrams) and kinesthetic (step-through, actually doing). Prendergast only deals with the first of these three well, the second almost not at all, and in the CD examples, the third very sparingly. COM code examples should have been in VC++, where the COM technology is actually built from start to finish. VB code is worthless for that subject. Don't let the MS bashing put you off - he's only being honest.
Trivial information and too much opinion ruin a good try.......1999-04-07
Bruce Prendergast's guide to the two WOSSA tests in the last MCSD certification track suffers from too much author opinion and not enough general knowledge. This book has intimidation written all over it. From its massive weight (like one of those dictionaries at a college library, you need a stand to read it!) to a harrowing 10 chapter opening explanation of Microsoft's COM Architecture (with so many names of different interfaces and methods that it is simply overwhelming), this book strikes fear from the get-go. My problem is there is never a theme to this and memorization of all these terms is NOT necessary for passing the WOSSA tests. Seems like a waste. Now I will say that the middle chapters cover the basics of the various database technologies fairly well. Although again, trivial terms and methods and such pop-up with alarming regularity, throwing off the student and detracting from the fundamental concepts involved. I also found the berating of Microsoft to get old by chapter 5 and found it doesn't quite reach it's peak until the final section. In Chapter 40, which we are told is "probably the most important chapter in the book," Prendergast just harangues Microsoft to no end because of their preference for "bottom-up" methodologies in developing applications (throw ideas out and see what sticks) over the traditional "top-down" model (a plan is developed and then work divided in order to fit the plan). While I can agree with this paradigm to some extent, the almost vindictiveness in the author's tone about Microsoft and its practices gets tiresome. I understand that Mr. Prendergast has a long history in the information business and he is certainly welcome to his beliefs. However, IDG could have knocked $30 off the cost of this book (and a few pounds) by eliminating those chapters and pages of "opinion" and just focused on getting you certified. The back cover says something about the keys to success on the tests and how the first one is studying the "right" material. This is not it. Look, get the Transcender tests on WOSSA, learn the concepts they cover by heart (through MSDN even), and have the answers ingrained in your genetic code. Should have no problem passing then.
One of the Best books I have seen Please read on!.......1999-04-04
Hi, Everybody cool it. I come from an embedded programming background with high performance real time systems also UNIX etc. not to mention IBM 360/370 as well as real time development for NT/9x etc. I started professional programming since 1986 when I was in High school. So, I do know what goes into it. Let me quote something which happened at M$ forum (MFC) in front of my eyes. If anyone doubts it, take a look at the M$ site for its archive. NT4SP4 changes the systems so much that your previous programs fail. There were M$ developers yelling there when this happened. This is the kind of critical thinking which Bruce tries to put into this great book. I can only wish every budding developer studies this book. This book shows the problems, which you are gonna face when you develop, which happen with us all of the time.

Customer Reviews:
Digital Drawing: Print and Web Graphics Using FreeHand.......2001-06-30
Digital Drawing has to be one of the best FreeHand books that I have ever read. The author seems to focus on "Real-World" techniques that a designer needs to know in order to incorporate FreeHand into her workflow. Digital Drawing, rather than a tutorial based book that shows you the software, focuses on the functionality of its use and the advantages for efficient productivity. Fortuneately, I have had the oportunity study under David Bergsland which only accentuates the learning experience. I can hardly wait until the next book reaches the stands.
Worth it!.......2000-04-02
"Pithy", precise, concentrated teaching. It's a hang-on-to-your-hat course, and not for the faint of heart. His goal is to prepare his students for the real world workplace, and he does it very well. I was happy to find it comes with a cd, even though that wasn't in the book description.
$39 for 352 pages (no Amazon discount)seemed a bit pricey. But if you want to use Freehand well, this book is a must. Very worthwhile studying. I only wish I could take his course in person.
Not for Beginners.......2000-03-24
This book is for students who already have some knowledge of Freehand and want to learn more on graphic design using Freehand from David Bergsland's professional experience. The book is printed on a thin paper, black and white. Putting in some color would have helped to better organize this book.
A Masterwork for Digital Illustration!.......1999-10-24
Digital Drawing: Print & Web Graphics Using FreeHand written by David Bergsland, instructor at Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute surpasses any book written on the subject. Not only is it a tutorial for FreeHand - the "hows" are explained in detail, but David goes beyond the "hows" and explains the "whys." Often designers create a design without having the knowledge that is necessary once their drawing goes to print. Many complications and added expense can occur because one is oblivious to what is necessary for the desired result. David accurately covers all aspects from the beginning of the process through to the end. Skill exams and miniskills throughout the chapters are excellent exercises for honing ones skills and are just another feature to help one become a competent artist. This book is comprehensive and a must for anyone at any level pursuing a career in digital illustration. David's expertise is brilliantly shared with all who read this masterwork; the wealth of information contained in these pages is priceless. Five stars is an understatement. Denise T. Daniels
A MUST for anyone creating graphics in the digital age!.......1999-10-20
I find this book to be a valuable resource for dealing with FreeHand. Basic through advanced levels of users will find helpful information. The projects are clearly designed to help you get familiar with the software quikly, but they also include challenging design elements. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants or needs to create digital drawings.
Book Description
Flash has taken the web world by storm, establishing itself as the de facto industry standard for web content and applications. With the release of Flash MX, more and more users are tackling the demanding issues of advanced development. In this book, Purdue University's rising computer graphics expert James Mohler and co-author Nishant Kothary pick up where the best-selling Flash MX: Graphics, Animation & Interactivity leaves off, presenting step-by-step solutions designed to help advanced users extend the awesome power of Flash on their web sites.
Customer Reviews:
Great book even for beginners.......2003-05-18
I'm a beginning flash user, and I picked this book up as a follow up to Mohler's first book. Even though it explores advanced scripting, the explanations are clear enough for beginners like myself to understand. I actually understand OOP because of the great dog class example. There are some really great examples on the cd-rom. It's so helpful to have an actual Flash file to play with, so I can see exactly how it works.
Comprehensive but cold.......2003-02-26
This is a quite thorough book that picks up where Mohler's intro book leaves off. It's written as if a Flash instructor literally transcribed his class presentations, which is good and bad. Explanations are long, but at times are wordy and dull. It will remind you at times of tedious homework assignments and drills. There is quite a bit of slogging through pages with only two or three long paragraphs with no Flash code. That's not bad, but it's a sign that an editor probably could have tightened up the writing here.
Also, these authors need to lighten up and learn to write! The tone they take is often "academic", with all the snobbiness and overuse of big words and long sentences that comes with that. Often it's clear that one or the other of the two authors has written a particular passage--and there are some awful clunkers there. Better instructors and writers strive for a more human, friendly tone.
Also, there are coding techniques that seem to me not to reflect current or common Flash coding practice, like the frequent use of the eval() function and the set() function (which I've *never* seen other advanced Flash authors use).
One good thing: the two long projects in the book are kind of neat, definately better than in some other big Flash books.
outstanding book.......2003-01-30
a great book for any flash student with superb examples . a must for anyone connected to computers..
Great Book!!.......2002-11-08
I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and I love it. It has tons of examples in the CD. It is a great book to learn complex actionscripting.

Book Description
There is much more to creating a Web site than simply knowing HTML. Designers must understand the ins-and-outs of image manipulation and compression, animation through the use of GIFs, ActiveX controls, Java applets, and server-push operations. Server administrators must understand security issues that include secure transactions, digital signatures, and firewalls. Regardless of the Web-based task at hand, users will find solutions within 1001 Web Site Construction Tips. The book's companion CD-ROM contains utilities, scripts, and applets that users can put to immediate use on their systems.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, great content.......2001-10-24
This book begins with an overview of web development technologies and then takes you through advanced techniques. As a web developer of 6 years I would highly recommend this book to anyone emerging in the web development business or those that are advanced in technique. This book was an excellent resource guide in developing many of my sites and is well laid out.
not proof read.......2001-03-20
This book may be fine for someone that already understand web production but it is very frustrating for someone just starting out. There are numerous mistakes throughout. Examples are explained and then demonstrations of don't match the explanation. Some of the examples don't work because the syntax is incorrect. If you don't all ready know how to use the commands explained in this book you will spend most of your time experimenting to correct the mistakes presented in this book.
Need to proof read your work.......2001-03-19
This book could be useful if the examples actually worked. I have barely reached the 50th page and all ready I have found more errors than should be allowed in an entire book. The examples are mis-quoted and several don't work. The book might be more helpful if the proof reader knew enough on the subject to correct the more obvious errors. If you buy this book be ready to experiment with the syntax which may be close but not always correct.
Book Description
This exciting new book explains how to communicate effectively through interactivity. Communication fundamentals are used as guidelines for interactive development for platforms such as multimedia and the World Wide Web. The reader is taught how to approach the interactive project as a communication tool while incorporating various media, communication principles, user interfaces, interactive design, and implementation to build a successful product. The principles presented are timeless and provide any professional involved in the development of interactive projects with an excellent resource.
Customer Reviews:
Solid introduction.......2000-07-13
Being new to the field of multimedia design, I read many books hoping to get the basic idea of what is involved in creating an interactive project. This book provided me with exactly the introductory level materials I needed to begin building a solid foundation. I now have a plan of action for what I need to focus on in order to be successful in designing multimedia projects. Kudos to Lisa...I anxiously await the release of your new book!
Principles of Interactive Design.......2000-01-12
A friend of mine recommended this book (he works for NASA) and I'm glad he did. This book talks about the basic principles of design necessary to creating a good web site or multimedia design project . . . in a way understandable to us non-programmers (but my tech-head friend at NASA liked it too). One of the strengths of this book (and there are too many to list) is that the author doesn't get trapped in talking about programming. This is very unlike other books that quickly go out of date due to a focus on the technology-of-the-moment. Ms. Graham talks about how to design interactive projects in a way undoubtedly valid 30 years from now. I feel as if this book will become a classic in design books. Even better yet, this book is very informative and not a bit condescending in tone. The book was an easy read and left me with plenty to think about.
And the cover is cool and the illustrations informative and interesting. Altogether a very good book and one that will have a place on my bookshelves for decades.

Just as successful students often score poorly on SATs, many highly experienced administrators fail the A+ certification exams because they understand the content but not the test structure. To address this issue, the book also provides tips and insights into how the adaptive tests are crafted, so that test takers will be prepared to "think" like the test. Written by a Network Administrator and award-winning Certified A+ Instructor, the book draws upon exhaustive subject expertise and teaching experience to provide everything you need to know to pass the exams.
Customer Reviews:
I think it's out dated!.......2006-12-23
It's will teach things about msdos... I don't think you will get msdos questions in A+. Watch out about it!
Book a Bit Dated.......2006-11-04
I would say overall, the book material is about average.
It appears to me that the ver. I received was written for the 2001 A+ exam; not the current 2003 exam. The hardware section is very dated but still applicable to the 2003 exam. The OS section doesn't even cover WIN XP. It has a large section on DOS and WIN 95 both of which have very few questions on the 2003 exam. On the other hand, the WIN 9.X, WIN NT, and WIN 2000 sections are very comprehensive; especially the WIN NT section.
The CD test material I would rate below average. Not many questions and those given are to easy to answer.
As anyone who has studied and sat for the A+ recommends, you need multiple study and practice test materials and sources to pass the exam.
I passed new A+ tests with this book........2003-12-07
I bought this book for fifteen bucks. Used it as my only guide and passed both of the new A+ test. I rate this book 10 big stars....
Good overview.......2003-11-19
I just passed my A+, I used Adaptive Exams and Exam Crams 2. Adaptive Exams seemed to be more straight forward and didn't give bad examples that were hard to understand. The only thing when using Adaptive Exams, is you do need to have a basic understanding of computers.
If you have a general background and want a book that's short and to the point, this is the book for you.
Awesome Source for a Ridiculously Easy Exam.......2003-09-16
This book is the perfect study source for someone with experience. I personally have over 5 years of I.T. experience, so I read this book in a week and passed both exams in less than 20 minutes. I think it's good that CompTIA is going back to the linear format because 30 questions (20 if your getting all the answers right) is just not enough to properly gauge a candidate's overall knowledge. I'm not complaining, I'm just stating a fact that there might be a lot of A+ certified techs out there that really don't know squat about PC's. But hey, I passed and now I'm A+ certified as a result. Now I can make $8.00 per hour at CompUSA or Best Buy! Willie - CCNA, Network+, A+

Great for Beginners!!!.......2003-10-27
Flash 5.0 GA&I is a great book from James Mohler, a leading multimedia specialist. The book covers enough detail for more advanced flash animators but is easy to read and understand for beginners. The book covers everything from the layout of Flash to integrating it with your website. Mr. Mohler not only shows you how Flash works, but also the intricacies of digital graphics. I think this last point is very important because it helps beginners grasp some of the concepts of digital graphics, which they can take with them when they learn other digital multimedia. This is an all-around great book for people interested in learning Macromedia Flash and digital graphics.
not quite as good as one of the other books.......2003-06-28
This is a good and useful book, but it could be better.
Each function is presented first with explanatory prose, then with step-by-step instructions. The explanatory prose doesn't make any sense until after going through the step-by-step instructions.
After a few chapters, I decided that "Flash 5 Hands-on Training" (0201731347) was easier to understand, so I switched books.
Neither book, however, gives clear instructions on how to create navigation buttons. I had to spend hours of trial and error.
Nor does either book explain how to make input boxes and provide feedback for an educational program. I am having to purchase a few more Flash 5 manuals and hope that at least one of those manuals will help me.

Great auther.......2002-11-08
This is the best reference book ever! I followed the book step by step and learned many Flash shortcuts and details that I can't find in other books. I try to work on one sample in this book. However, there are some codes wrong in my application and I couldn't find the error. So, I got enough guts and sent the author an email. the author replied me the next day, and helped me to solve the problem. He also explained my mistake. Pretty cool!

Great Book!.......1998-07-19
This book is great! It gave me all the insight I needed to get through the Microsoft Exams. Told all of the "tricks" necessary to pass these difficult exams! Two thumbs up!
An underwhelming book with a few redeaming features........1997-06-15
This is a book for those who want to be prepared but made the mistake of thinking this book would help. The author has a firm grasp of the obvious and of how to type, pounding the obvious into the readers head until they are effectively moot points. Their is little structure to the book. Information is presented in long paragraphs which ramble around the information until the reader gives up and moves on to the next paragraph. Clear thoughts and segues from one topic to the next are as endagered in this book as Snickers bar in a Systems Administrator's cubicle. While the author seems to know his subject the reader has to work at gleaning the useful from the long winded.
The four redeaming qualities are: 1. Most of the information you want is in there, somewhere. 2. The appendices. 3. The Self Test Software self test CD. 4. The plug of Amazon.com on page 166.
