The federal sector offers considerable employment opportunities. Currently 34% of the federal workforce (919,683 workers) are now eligible for retirement and within the next year 50% of the total workforce (1,352,475 workers) will be eligible for regular or early retirement. The biggest change in the federal sector in over 50 years is the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) which consolidated the functions of 21 agencies to better protect America and to fight terrorism.
This book is based on the author's 35 years of government experience. Damp retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 2004. "The Book of U.S. Government Jobs" provides an insider's first-hand view of what it takes to go from job hunter to hired employee, and everything in between to improve your chances of landing a high-paying government job. Damp's career included numerous management positions where he was responsible for recruiting, rating, interviewing, assessing, and hiring applicants.

FEDERAL JOBS A to Z.......2006-08-09
Dennis Damp's 9th edition is simply the best. He covers all aspects of applying, interviewing and then getting a job with the federal government and provides many useful tips and references. It is laid out in a logical manner and easy to understand. I have reviewed several books on the subject and Damp's book is by far the top of the class. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in getting a job with the federal government and jobs counselors as a useful resource in your reference library. This book is the A to Z on the federal job search process and a must read for federal job seekers.

Great If Your Interested in Working at a Traditional Firm..........2006-02-25
I found that this book focused mainly on traditional law firms across the country rather than non-traditional aspects of the practice of law. If your willing to pick up and move across the country for a specific firm then this is the book for you. If your looking for something less traditional, keep looking...
Beware . . . ........2004-03-24
I actually worked at one of the places she suggests (a government agency), and it was the worst place I have ever worked. It had a very high turnover rate, especially for a non-firm employer. I got the impression that the recruiter was a friend of Kimm's. Employers can simply schmooze the author into putting them into her book--this how many attorneys get on those "Best attorneys under 40" type lists.
The view from the West.......2004-02-26
I agree with the reviewer from Il that this is not a helpful book, and that it was written in such a way that it would become outdated quickly. Culling information from "administrators" is all fine and good, but the book would greatly benefit from having been authored by a lawyer who had been in the trenches in more ways than as a mere summer associate--Ms. Walton's experience with practicing law. I am thinking, for example, of D. Aron's classic book on alternatives to practicing law, a book which benefits greatly from the author's experience of having practiced law. Such a perspective would allow one to more carefully explore firm politics and how a new associate might deal with them, for example. I also agree with the other reviewer's underscoring the impact of regionalism. In California, for example, we routinely hire prospects from California law schools that are not highly ranked. This is because we know that such schools turn out fine lawyers by having come against them or worked beside them. (I'd like to think it is not because we feel inferior to applicants from better ranked schools elsewhere, a problem the other reviewer hinted at as far as his experience in the South.)
The View From a West Coast Litigator.......2004-02-26
I agree with the reviewer from Il. who criticized the book as out of date and not helpful. There definitely is a middle America bias to the book. It is not for someone who seriously wants to explore 'radical' public interest careers, for example. It is also not, like Aron's classic book, about a wide variety of things one can do with a law degree besides practicing law. Sure, there are some examples, but not many. There is regionalism all over the country, as the other reviewer pointed out, not just in the South. (His example.) In California, for example, California schools--even those that are not high pedigree--win out over higher ranked schools from other areas of the country besides legal employers tend to choose people whom they can identify with in terms of education and other things. Ms. Walton's book might have been more helpful if she had ever practiced law besides in the capacity of a summer associate. Asking "adminitrators" for data is a good start, but they often can't advise in terms of firm politics etc.
Very good resource.......2004-02-01
I read this book before I went to law school and during my recruiting season, and found it to be a very helpful and comprehensive resource. The book discusses many different employers, ranging from law firms, companies, clerkships, government jobs (including some agencies that people may not be aware of), small firms, public interest jobs, trade associations and law school administration jobs. Most of the companies/firms, etc. listed contain a brief factual description of the workplace, comments by lawyers and a description of the workplace environment. There is also advice on how to obtain some of the more unusual positions.
Although I usually do not like to comment on reviews written by other people, there are a few things written about this book that I believe are unfair to the author. First of all, yes some of the salary numbers and hiring numbers are out of date - this is to be expected when these numbers change yearly. That information is easily found on the internet. Second, please do not let people's political agendas distract you from a wonderful resource. The DOJ is still a great place to work in terms of legal jobs - any lawyer who wants a job where they only take on cases they fully support will probably be disappointed in the profession. Next, Ms. Walton made a strong effort to find firms all around the country to profile - she explicitly says that she could not find many NYC firms that fit her criteria (and to the person who complained about the ethics of Texas firms - you might want to check out the ethics of NYC firms!). Finally, Ms. Walton's point about the foreign service is not that it is the "best job" for lawyers wanting to work internationally, but rather one that many law students don't consider. She specifically recognizes the fact that American law students can work outside the U.S. in law firms, but mentions the Foreign Service as another excellent option (and it is absolutely true that many students who say they want to practice "international law" discover that they don't really like "international business law" in a firm). Finally, having worked at CEELI just two summers ago, I can verify that their expansion into nations other than Eastern Europe and the NIS states is very recent and therefore could not have been published in the book when it went to press. Again, the book was meant to be used as a resource and jumping-off point, and updated information can easily be found on the internet.
I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of entering law school, in law school, or practicing law. It is an excellent career resource and may open your eyes to possibilities you did not realize were out there.
Book Description

A Must-read.......2007-10-04
I'm at the beginning of my career in voice-over and I've read a good handful of books on the topic and taken tons of classes...but rarely has anyone "broken down" the essentials of technique quite as clearly and succinctly as Elaine Clark does in this book. For the first time, I felt like I had some practical tools I could refer to when approaching copy, which not only gave me a promising ground to start from, but also helped build my confidence and desire to "stick-to-it." Rather than give you hollow, abstract phrases about the need to connect emotionally to the copy, she shows you "how" to make it "yours." Obviously she's a great teacher with a lot of experience, as she leaves no stone unturned in this book with regards to what to expect in every aspect of this career and how to be best prepared so that you can succeed.
My Favorite Book on Voiceover.......2007-08-16
Elaine Clark is my guru. I have read this book a number of times since purchasing it in 2001, and I return to a number of specific passages when I need a refresher. Having worked steadily in this business for 20+ years, and having purchased many books on voice acting, I 've found "There's Money Where Your Mouth Is" to be my absolute favorite. The reader is taken from the basics to the multitude of details involved in running your own successful voice-over business.
Thanks to Elaine Clark, I have grown professionally as a voice actor, and enhanced my voice acting and copy interpretation skills.
get this book.......2006-04-21
If you are at all interested in VO, get this book. I read it cover to cover a year ago, and I've been cherry picking those areas that I've needed to focus on ever since. Now that I've marked up my copy at least three times and pages are starting to break loose of their binding, I'm ready to get an agent and start working. If your an actor or improvisor this book will help all areas of your artistic endeavors. The nuances & subtleties of speech are examined in great detail. The bottom line throughout this book is how to stop "acting" and be real. The market is hungry for every day real people. There's a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow, pick it up.
Very helpful.......2005-10-24
This book is very helpful for those new to the industry. It contains information about putting your demo together, about getting an agent, and has sample copy to practice with, and tips for exercising your voice. I definitely reccomend this for anyone who is interested in trying this line of work for the first time.
Great book........2005-09-28
This book can be helpful for actors starting out. I have found that the actors I work with in my private practice need exercises to get them prepared for the biz.

Useful primer on charting a career at international organizations and multinationals.......2006-06-25
Nina Segal's update of the late Eric Kocher's work provides a helpful guide for international job-seekers. From a bewildering array of options, Segal breaks career paths down by sector (media, finance, government, international organizations, NGOs and non-profits, law firms) and provides advice on the type of experience and qualifications that can help you get a foot in the door at these complex employers.
This is not a book about finding work abroad! Nor does it try to be a comprehensive index of every employer with international operations or a foreign focus. Rather, it's a starting point for a career path with big employers such as the United Nations, the US State Department, the Associated Press, the World Bank, Citigroup, and Human Rights Watch. The book focuses on the information you'd need to find an entry-level to mid-level job at companies and organizations with strong international components to their work. This latest edition adds a host of web links facilitating further research.
Segal is a human resources consultant at the UN, and previously headed the career services office at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. She has spent years studying and guiding successful international careers. "International Jobs" is a succinct distillation of what she's learned. While it could be improved, the book really is in a field of its own, and very useful for anyone seeking a path to a cosmopolitan career and life. "International Jobs" has helped me in my career, and I regularly refer to it when asked for career advice.
Rubbish.......2006-02-10
This book is awful. As said below, see the reviews of the 5. edition if you don't believe me. As an American who has permanently immigrated abroad and has had to work through the cultural hardships and bureaucracy in Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom I can say from personal experience that this book can at best be called naive. They take the typical N. American point of view that you can get on anywhere with english, they assume that the american resume will work in every country (it won't...in the UK the format is different (CV) and in other countries like Germany you have to write in a different format and in german), they give no information about how working in any of these countries is different both culturally and in respect to the working laws, and the jobs that they do list are low level jobs that no one would ever work in for more than a year (teach english abroad, volunteer work, etc.).
If you are looking for a job abroad, first off learn the language of the country you want to work in. Then go to or call the embassy and ask them about the working laws and what you have to do to get a visa. After that start sending out local formatted CVs to companies in the country, but under any circumstances do NOT buy this book.
where are the 5th edition reader's reviews.......2005-01-21
I dont know why amazon forgot to include them here - anyway: the reader's reviews of the 5th ed. of this book speak for themself ...
Check it out yourself.
Also, it is rather interesting that Nina Segal - according to the "editorial" review - never ever worked abroad. (That sounds a little bit like Condi and George W. telling the rest of the world how to fight terrorism and introduce democracy ...)
Nice Companion Book.......2003-11-21
This book is a nice companion to the more comprehensive "International Job Finder: Where the Jobs are Worldwide." While "International Job Finder" provides everything you could want to know about where to find jobs around the globe via the Internet and in print, the value of "International Jobs" rests in the in-depth information it provides about hundreds of international employers. "International Job Finder" is a lot more candid about how to stay safe overseas these days while "International Jobs" pretty much glosses over the risks in overseas work. But between them, the two books cover just about everything you need to know for a successful international job search.

Completely Disappointed.......2006-03-18
I admit that I purchased this book mostly because it advertised a coupon for a free directory of international employers. When I called the company to order the book, I found out that the directory dates from 1994. Obviously I decided to forgoe paying the $10 to have it shipped to me. Otherwise, I have been diligently trying websites that are listed in the book and many of them no longer exist or have very little useful information for international career listings or other job search aids. This book is to be avoided.
Good compilation of URLs. NOT a bible.......2005-10-31
This is a good book indeed. However, the description is very misleading.
It is basically compilation of job search engines all over the world. Search as hard as you want, you won't find any info on visas and permits or tips and tricks how to persuade a foreign employer hire you.
You can find it in Google or A9, if you search hard enough. However, this book also gives you brief description of each site. On the downside, web is a dynamic place so many links are outdated or irrelevant.
I wonder if the people that called it a Bible and told that it includes the "dirt of finding jobs" actually read it.
Find the Perfect Job in Any Country.......2005-07-07
If you want to find an International Job, this book gives you the URLs for job sites in Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Russia, the Middle East, Latin America Canada and Mexico. This book also has a page at the end for you to order a free directory of International Employers. Each URL listing also has a brief summary of the website.
One of my friends teaches English in Russia and she loves her job. Her parents now teach in China. The possibilities are really endless for anyone who wants to travel the world.
If you have been wondering how you could live in an exotic location or just live in another country for a few years at a time to learn about the world, then this book will be very helpful. If you are looking for volunteer teaching opportunities, this book has many resources.
The resort jobs looked tempting although I still have yet to see a job listing that says: "Stay at our resort free and read books all day long." It could happen.

Fine Combination of Information and How To.......2001-08-17
As interested in diversity management as I am, I find much of the written material a bit dry and academic. Perhaps writers compensate for the strong feelings that this work brings up by trying to create some sense of distance. In any case, there is a real lack of simple, down to earth texts that are both effective and easy to assimilate. "Voices of Diversity" is the exception to all of this. As the subtitle indicates, the material in the book is based on the content of interviews and discussions with many individuals, and the vitality of their expression permeates the entire work.
The book starts out with some generic introductory material and then starts to go through the interview findings in a straightforward, group by group fashion. There are seperate chapters on African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos, recent immigrants, workers with disabilities, younger and older workers, gays and lesbians, women, and white men. Two groups that were left out, which I feel should have been included are Jewish and Arab-American which are often, mistakenly lumped together with white male. Nor is much attention paid to religious or socio-economic diversity.
The chapters themselves start out with general discussion. They then go on to introduce the statements made by interviewees and discuss the stories behind them. Then several scenarios of workplace situations are introduced. After each scenario sections discuss what went wrong and what might have been done differently. I found this material very useful. Getting some insight into how the affected people felt and what they thought is tremendously useful in getting to the source of the real problem. The material on what should have been done provides good examples of simple, considerate and respectful behavior which could be the basis for finding common ground and resolving issues.
The book dates from 1994, but is still quite timely in 2001. Renee Blank and Sandra Slipp have a crisp, clear writing style that makes for easy reading. Not only is the book good reference material, but it would be a fine teaching tool for a discussion group. I would recommend "Voices of Diversity" for everyone's diversity reading list.
Down-to-earth Manual.. Extremely well written.......1999-08-20
I am reading this book for a leadership program and have found a jewel. I am thoroughly enjoying the real-life examples of discrimination experienced by the various demographic groups. The book is written in layman's language, and without being blunt, its examples and how-to instructions are clear to the reader. I strongly suggest this to managers or staff members willing to learn more about diversity and how it fits into the workplace.
Book Description
Career Paths in Psychology is a must-have resource for students contemplating a career in psychology, for psychologists considering switching between areas of psychology, and for professionals thinking of switching to psychology from another field. In this comprehensive anthology, authors selected for their distinction in their chosen careers offer their professional--and personal--perspectives on 19 different graduate-level careers in psychology. Few fields of study offer more career opportunities than does psychology, and readers will find thoughtful discussions, leavened with tips and insights gained from personal experience, on the full range, including (to name only a few) academia, clinical psychology, health and school psychology, clinical neuropsychology, and government service. Each chapter discusses the nature of the career, its advantages and disadvantages, how to prepare for it, typical activities, ranges of financial compensation, opportunities for employment, and the personal attributes needed for success in the career. "Day in the life" discussions give readers a glimpse into the prosaic realities, challenges, and rewards of each career that the lab or lecture hall rarely provides. Reprinted eight times since the publication of the first edition in 1997, Career Paths in Psychology is recognized as the "go-to" sourcebook for anyone seeking a candid portrait of different careers in this ever-changing field. The second edition has been expanded (discussions of five new careers added) and updated to reflect current trends and changes in the field.

Fast service .......2007-10-13
I was very happy with this book the sender sent this book within a day of notice and it was very well taaken care of.
an OK textbook.......2007-09-21
It's an OK text book. I know I would never buy a book like this for my own sake. However, since it's a PsyD program assigned textbook, I have to go through it. Get bored several times during the reading. It's alright informative; I did learn a little information after reading it. So i think it's alright.
Great for psych majors!.......2006-05-10
I definitely recommend this book for any undergraduate who is a psychology major and is planning a career in psychology. The authors of each article cover their fields rather extensively, outlining a day in the life, average/median salaries, the responsibilities and educational tracks to their jobs, and more information on related careers in the field. It has many traditional psychology careers (academia, counseling, clinical in a hospital) as well as non-traditional "different" subfields (community, health psych, i/o psych, government research).
However, I only recommend it if you already have an idea that you want to go into the field of psychology but are having trouble deciding on a subfield. The book is really for people who already have a sort of basis in psych and know that they are interested, but need more information. If you still think that all a psychologist does is "couch work," it's DEFINITELY for you.
Great Overview for Exploration.......2006-02-07
I read this book from the standpoint of a working person interested in getting into psychology. It gives a good overview of the different branches of psychology, and talks about days in the lives of psychologists, educational requirements, salaries, etc. Most of the jobs discussed require a PhD, so for me these jobs would be long term goals, but even so - reading this book was a good way to think about what branches of psychology appeal to me.
Great overview.......2005-02-22
This book is a great overview, useful for understanding some of the different paths one can take with a degree in psychology. It has a lot of "up close and personal" details with people who have been very successful in their particular fields. This book is excellent for anyone who is considering a major or career in psych as well as those who are about to graduate or have already done so, but may feel a bit overwhelmed as far as the next step. It was particularly useful to me in choosing what grad school program to pursue. It is has a lot more info and detail for academically related careers (as opposed to more socially oriented ones). If you read it and begin to see that this is not your leaning (as I did), try a book about careers in social work or as a counselor. Nevertheless, it was useful in revealing what I was not particularly interested in and pointing me toward my true interests - quite helpful!
