The lure of this book's promise starts with the assumption in its title. Possibility--that big, all-encompassing, wide-open-door concept--is an art? Well, who doesn't want to be a skilled artist, whether in the director's chair, the boardroom, on the factory floor, or even just in dealing with life's everyday situations? Becoming an artist, however, requires discipline, and what the authors of The Art of Possibility offer is a set of practices designed to "initiate a new approach to current conditions, based on uncommon assumptions about the nature of the world."
If that sounds a little too airy-fairy for you, don't be put off; this is no mere self-improvement book, with a wimpy mandate to transform its readers into "nicer" people. Instead, it's a collection of illustrations and advice that suggests a way to change your entire outlook on life and, in the process, open up a new realm of possibility. Consider, for example, the practice of "Giving an A," whether to yourself or to others. Not intended as a way to measure someone's performance against standards, this practice instead recognizes that "the player who looks least engaged may be the most committed member of the group," and speaks to their passion rather than their cynicism. It creates possibility in an interaction and does away with power disparities to unite a team in its efforts. Or consider "Being the Board," where instead of defining yourself as a playing piece, or even as the strategist, you see yourself as the framework for the entire game. In this scenario, assigning blame or gaining control becomes futile, while seeking to become an instrument for effective partnerships becomes possible.
Packed with such examples of personal and professional interactions, the book presents complex ideas on perception and recognition in a readable, useable style. The authors' combined, eclectic experience in music and painting (as well as family therapy and executive workshops) infuses their examples with vibrant color and sound. The relevance to corporate situations and relationships is well developed, and they don't rely on dry case studies to do it. Indeed, this book assumes the emotional intelligence and desire to engage of its reader, promising access to the rewards of that door-opening notion--possibility--in return. --S. Ketchum
Book Description
Presenting twelve breakthrough practices for bringing creativity into all human endeavors, The Art of Possibility is the dynamic product of an extraordinary partnership. The Art of Possibility combines Benjamin Zander's experience as conductor of the Boston Philharmonic and his talent as a teacher and communicator with psychotherapist Rosamund Stone Zander's genius for designing innovative paradigms for personal and professional fulfillment.
The authors' harmoniously interwoven perspectives provide a deep sense of the powerful role that the notion of possibility can play in every aspect of life. Through uplifting stories, parables, and personal anecdotes, the Zanders invite us to become passionate communicators, leaders, and performers whose lives radiate possibility into the world.
Download Description
The Art of Possibility offers a set of breakthrough practices for creativity in all human enterprises. This inspirational book is a synthesis of Rosamund Stone Zander's knowledge of cutting-edge psychology and Benjamin Zander's experiences as the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Infused with the energy of their dynamic partnership, the book joins together Ben's extraordinary talent as a mover and shaker, teacher, and communicator with Rosamund's genius for creating innovative paradigms for personal and professional fulfillment. In lively counterpoint, the authors provide us with a deep sense of the powerful role that the notion of possibility can play in every aspect of our lives. The Zanders' deceptively simple practices are based on two premises: that life is composed as a story ("it's all invented") and that, with new definitions, much more is possible than people ordinarily think. The book shifts our perspective with uplifting stories, parables, and anecdotes. From "Giving an A" to the mysterious "Rule Number 6" to "Leading from Any Chair"--the account of Ben's stunning realization that the conductor/leader's power is directly linked to how much greatness he is willing to grant to others--each practice offers an opportunity for personal and organizational transformation.

The Art of Possibillities.......2007-10-11
I had seen the DVD prior to reading the book so was visually aware of what was being written about. I think the book brought out more details from both authors. As I now reflect on what I received from reading this book I believe 'humility' stands out. Rule #6 has life changing value. Also that there exist possibilities of greatest actualization and service beyond perfection and self. A must read book.
inspirational.......2007-09-28
This book continues to change my life. I loved their key phrases to remember their ideas. I suggested it to many of my teacher friends and people on our board of education - where money is so tight and so many cuts are being made -this book inspires you to the many possibilities you can create.
Reshaping the "box".......2007-09-06
This book is thought provoking and stimulating. It is not an easy read, but definately gives you the tools to seek new ways of viewing almost any situation in a more positive light. I highly recommend this to anyone who is ready to not to merely think outside of the box, but reshape their box entirely.
No change without leadership.......2007-08-27
There is no change without leadership at all levels. This book is a good introduction into the principles of transformational leadership. Creating Possibilities for others such that they are touched moved and inspired. The leadership theory is based on leading oneself not others and focuses on who you are being not what you are doing. This is not a book about manipulative Machiavellian techniques rather it's about creating free choice for others where they are inspired by the possibility you have created.
A personal growth book for the nearly-jaded.......2007-08-16
I've been reading books for years now that are designed to inspire and lead one toward personal growth in relationships, in the workplace, in life in general. I'm a junkie for this kind of book, and therefore I've become somewhat jaded as well, never really expecting anything new but always hoping. What a delight, therefore, to be utterly surprised by THE ART OF POSSIBILITY. This book delivers! The Zanders' approach is revolutionary, shining real light amongst the plethora of jingoistic motivational books that abound these days. There is nothing self-centered or bumper stickerish or rah-rah cheerleady in this book. It has real depth, it never skims the surface or lets us off the hook. Benjamin is conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Rosamund is a painter and therapist. They bring their stunning creativity and imagination into real life -- their lives -- and show us how we, too, can compose and conduct our lives, paint our future. It's an exciting book, one that I've now read three times and underlined and highlighted and excerpted onto sticky notes for my computer and mirror and calendar. No wonder they are being called on to speak to leading business and professional groups.

Customer Reviews:
An Outstanding Read!.......2007-10-09
I admit, I like to read. However, in my busy schedule, it seems that I find less and less time to sit down and read a book from cover to cover. It was hard to put this book down, but DeMoss breaks up the book into small 5-10 minute chunks that you can handle easily.
He has practical, right-on advice that you can use at work and at home. He uses stories to remind you to use time wisely, to tackle that hard project, to be a person of integrity and how you should relate to the opposite sex (just a few of the subjects mentioned in the 24 short chapters of this book).
There is a lot of knowledge in our world today but much less wisdom. This book takes you on a spiritual journey without you even realizing it. I can't say enough good about this book!
Book for Life!.......2007-09-05
The Little Red Book of Wisdom by Mark Demoss is one of the most influencial books on "life" that I have ever read. It is a short read, but one that you will reference repeatedly. I purchased a few of these books to give to those I care about.
The Little Red Book of Wisdom.......2007-09-05
This book is a must read if you are searching or seeking to add unto your wisdom. Don't hesitate to purchase it...because it's worth the money you'll purchase it for.
A great read.......2007-09-01
Also good for a gift or for leaving on the coffee table / magazine rack for visitors.
Models and inspires integrity in business and family.......2007-08-28
You don't find many books that you honestly can't bear to put down. The Little Red Book of Wisdom is sincerely one of them. It is a testimonial book of sorts that models and inspires Christian integrity for business, family, and relationships in general.
The author runs a public relations business, and leads his company using Godly wisdom and sound priorities (family over business, people over $, and Godly integrity over everything).
Mark DeMoss attributes much of his ethos to his father who passed away when the author was only 17 years old. He says that his father was the wisest man he has ever known. I think it is astounding how much DeMoss' father impacted his life, and so many others vicariously through his son, when he invested only 17 short years with his boy. This teaches us to invest our time intently, and on the right things.

The new edition of this book helps learners of all ages and backgrounds take control of their lives and improve self belief and self-esteem. A blend of concepts and applications help readers discover and develop emotional, intellectual, physical, and social potential.
Customer Reviews:
Reaching Your Potential.......2000-06-01
Many people advocate life long learning and the process of reaching your full potential, but generally no one knows how to do that. This book is designed for individuals from middle school to retirement age and provides them with step by step assessments, worksheets and exercises to reach their potential.
This book is broken down in five subject topics, and fifteen chapters to provide an easy systematic approach to personal and professional development. The five subject matters are: Developing Your Potential in Emotional, Intellectual, Physical and Social realms with the fifth unit entitled Developing Your Action Plan.
This book has been wonderful in meeting the needs of four different educational and training areas. First as a personal self help book. Second as a textbook for a college level one-hour class entitled Professional Image Development offered through the Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Third as an in-house book for career and personal growth seminars within private industry. And fourth, as a resource book, accessible to all employees, checked out from a Corporate Learning Center library.
The book does not have religious growth. The authors state that religious growth is outside the realm of the book. This makes the book perfect for the diverse workforce and student population.
The book does have a companion guide for instructors: Reaching Your Potential, an Instructor's Guide.

This book empowers you to create mutually beneficial long-term relationships.
Customer Reviews:
Reading this was a series of WOW moments.......2006-07-26
Instead of the usual business approach, this is more a "new age" or "self-help" perspective. For someone who has lived by "If you want it done right, do it yourself", this was like a 2x4 to my head. Many practical tools. Your reading time should be well spent!
Solid Networking Guide.......2005-05-21
Donna Fisher has done an excellent job of pinning down the essentials to networking. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to edge in the business or social field.
Great Way to Learn the Basics.......2005-05-14
As I talk to more and more people, it becomes obvious that most of them have a vague idea of what networking is, but really no idea how to get started or how to be effective. This book gives a great starting place. The assessment allows the reader to take a hard look at where they are now and then using the steps, to make a plan for improving their life and career. I would highly recommend this for people who want to get started on improving their networking skills.
False reviews.......2005-04-01
To answer one reviewers question: I've see these "5 star" reviewers in every networking title sold (see all of their reviews listed). Has Rick Frishman ever reviewed a networking book he didn't rave about? Better still, has he ever read any of the books he reviews? These "reviewers" have written their own networking books and are hawking each other's books, deceiving potential buyers. I guess this is their form of networking. A potential book buyer should disregard what they say.
Semi-useful, but nothing new .......2004-11-01
If you've read at least one networking book, you most likely will find little, if anything, useful from this one. I must admit there are some helpful hints such as: 1) Avoid the Lone Ranger mentality, 2) Give without expecting anything in return, 3) Gain value from every contact, 4) Become an active and perceptive listener, & 5) The 3 Foot Rule.
These(like most of the 59 "secrets") present a somewhat hackneyed approach to networking. Although worth a look-see, I would recommend a check out from the library for this title, rather than wasting your mula.

Truly a handbook..........2007-09-05
This collection of readings was so helpful to me, even as a graduate student. I used selections from this book when I constructed a class for teaching assistants. Topics covered include academic freedom and free speech, getting a job, the art of publishing, and discussion vs. lecture courses. Absolutely indispensable reading for the academic. Will be an invaluable reference throughout an academic career.
This is excellent!.......2007-08-08
This is a book I wish someone had told me about when still a doctoral student -- it certainly would have helped a great deal over the years. Things obviously would have worked much better and my transition from Graduate School to the professoriate would have been much smoother. Every graduate student and every new assistant professor needs one on their shelves. Not only that: Graduate Faculty, please buy one for your teaching assistant, your doctoral student and every graduate student you advise. It will do them a world of good and they'll be ever grateful to you!
Book Description
Many people experience some degree of job dissatisfaction. But figuring out whether they should change themselves — or change jobs — isn’t easy. Drawing on her business background, her training as a social worker, and her years of experience as an executive coach, Maggie Craddock outlines a therapeutic process that carefully separates what the reader wants and needs from the often-frustrating demands of family and work. The author believes that identifying authentic career goals and strategies requires a careful examination of one’s inner life. She clearly outlines the four-stage process — beginning with the Awareness Stage and ending with the Integration Stage — and includes exercises, examples, and inspirational quotes. Craddock gently guides the reader through the process, illustrating each stage with real-life examples, including stories from Fortune 500 CEOs and professional women returning to the workforce after having children. Ultimately a very hopeful book, The Authentic Career is a welcome companion on anyone's career path.
Customer Reviews:
Life Changing Book.......2007-04-25
Ms. Craddock's book is thought provoking. As an award winning portfolio manager, she brings her business background to a level where we can all relate. Never before has an author taken such an introspective approach to career development. Maggie is the Phil McGraw of career advice. This is a must read.
I no longer view negative co-workers the same. .......2007-03-04
There is a section in Ms. Craddoock's book that hits home with me. I could not understand for the life in me why co-workers sometimes took a dislike for others on the job for no apparent reason. According to this book, it turns out that individuals bring a lot of baggage from their childhood to work. One person in this book admitted to not liking their co-worker because they resembled a relative who had mistreated them in the past. Is that wild or what?
Soul based career development.......2005-01-30
The book is four-stage self-inquiry process by Executive Coach Maggie Craddock. Ms. Craddock's exercises comprise mind, body, and spirit in interactive exercises and follow-up action items. Her book was very helpful for me with respect to a recent career change from public relations to producing executive conferences for the pharmaceutical industry. The Authentic Career process a vital compass point in the navigation of a life-long work life.
The job market is moving at lightning speed. It is now essential for young professionals to assess their skills, talents, and values before taking life-altering paths. As for seasoned workers, The Authentic Career offers a balance between effective career evaluation and proactive actions consistent with one's values and needs in a professional context. This book that avoids the trap of "analysis paralysis" and aids to forwards anyone into decisive action.
living & working well.......2004-04-21
Rebeccasreads recommends THE AUTHENTIC CAREER as an elegant & deeply invested seminar on transforming the quality of both your professional & private life.
Illustrated with stories from Fortune 500 CEOs & women re-entering the workforce after having children, along with a four stage process, THE AUTHENTIC CAREER is deep reading, & certainly a worthy companion upon your professional path.
Zen and the Art of Professional Coaching.......2004-03-07
Ms. Craddock does a brilliant job of taking us through the often painful process of finding ourselves and then bringing the best of ourselves to the workplace. The Authentic Career is about finding and living the authentic self. It brings us back to the things we might have once been told by a well-meaning friend or a self-help lecture; it makes real and fleshes out exactly what we need to do to work through core issues of our identity and find our "true bliss" in the workplace.
What better person than Ms. Craddock to show us the way. She went from making million dollar business deals to working with mental patients to try to find her bliss and to bring the fruits of her labors to us, in a very readable,
usable form. I have benefitted greatly from reading this book!

Accompanying each activity are provocative statistics about women and money, as well as stories of girls and women who have succeeded in their own business ventures. Also included is a resource section that provides suggestions for further reading, a directory of organizations and a glossary of business terms.
"At last! A book of practical, simple and enjoyable activities that will give the girls and young women in your life the opportunity to learn that business is both fun and profitable." -- Alice Ball, President, Girls Incorporated

Amazing lessons.......2007-07-24
I have read many self-help books - so far this is the best and most far-reaching and comprehensive. Like Dr Rao mentioned the book is based on Eastern philosophies, mainly the three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Dr. Rao had made it available to the world resident of the 21st century. I wished the adherent of these religions will take heed of how they have to come back to the true teachings of their religion. Majority have stray way far from the true teachings and that is why we have all these problems in the world right now. There are so much to learn and to master in this book and it is amazing how Dr Rao had made it so relevant and inspiring. Each time I read portion of the book I left with serenity and peace. I have not even buy the book yet I just borrow it from the public library but surely I will get one for myself. This will be one book that will never want to depart from together with Pulling Your Own String - Dyer. It has truly help me be better and stronger.
Great Book, must have book .......2007-06-02
This is one of my top rated books I ever read. I can see this is going to help a lot for my future in all aspects. Exercises are amazing.

Amazingly Powerful.......2007-05-23
I've read numerous books of self-help and of similar spiritual laws that this book is teaching; yet this is the first time I was so impressed that I write a review for a book. What I have to say is simple-- if you choose to take the time reading this book, you are truly blessed.
Re-start your business thinking.......2007-05-15
I thought this book was excellent. A fresh view of common sense thinking. Motivating and exciting. Quick read.
There are books that change your life.......2007-03-11
There are books that change your life, and if you are ready for them, they open unforeseen doors. Srikumar Rao has provided all of us with a gift far greater than keys to success...he's given us tools to tap inner resources, to sort through what we have been given in this world, and to move not only sucessfully, but proudly and happily through life. By transforming the way you view the world, this book allows you to also sculpt what the world has to give you in return. Although I did not take the course, by reading the book and completing the exercises, I am a more enriched person today. I stand firmly in saying that this book should be required reading for young and old alike, especially those entering a new field of work or endeavor. I have met 3 previous students of Rao's and am impressed with them all. Professor, you have my vote of confidence!

Just the book I've been looking for!.......2006-10-19
This book was filled with ideas and options for someone (like myself) who is looking into part-time work.
This book is well-researched. It is dense and has so much information written in a clear and consise manner. I especially enjoyed the segments about the workers who have made the successful change from full time to part-time.
Thank you, Ms. Berger. I am looking forward to implementing your suggestions into my own job search.

The Art of Giving and Receiving.......2006-03-27
When you think of networking, what comes to mind? Do you think of attending a tradeshow to find a lot of people for whom to sell your products or services? Or maybe you think of meeting someone who will help you land that perfect job. While these are both legitimate reasons for wanting to network, Diane Darling's "Networking for Career Success" reminds us that networking is the art of building and sustaining mutually beneficial relationships. In other words, one should expect to give as well as receive.
"Networking for Career Success" is packed with powerful ideas and suggestions on how to network the right way. The author gives great advice on etiquette, preparation and execution. For example, she suggests packing a networking kit that includes index cards for notes, business cards and breath mints (among other things). She also drives home the need to build relationships and advises readers to be prepared to help others when asked.
Though the book is light on pages, it is heavy on sound advice for professional networking. Diane Darling has written an intelligent handbook that should be included with anyone's networking survival kit.
