Book Description

Most people would love to have 20/20 hindsight on their careers. In Smart Moves for Liberal Arts Grads, college career experts Sheila Curran and Suzanne Greenwald have assembled the next best thing: the collective wisdom of a diverse and inspiring cast of success stories—twenty-three liberal arts graduates who have gone on to all manner of fascinating and satisfying professions. The authors have combined lessons from the stories with their own hands-on experience with thousands of students and graduates to outline a framework for finding a perfect career.

What makes Smart Moves different is that it provides essential career advice while being fun to read. Readers will be struck by the frankness of the biographies of real graduates whose careers have taken twists and turns. Todd turned his passion into a living as the founder and CEO of several small businesses and a professional cellist; Thad's path took him from English major to a dream job in the front office of a major league baseball team; and a subway ride helped Sharon speed her intended career leap from a luxury department store to journalism. What binds them together is that they have all made smart moves on the way to career success—both during their liberal arts education and in the real world.

Smart Moves not only champions the value of a liberal arts education, it also embraces the complexity of careers, and the notion that many different factors contribute to success: education, experience, attitude, personal characteristics, and a good dose of luck. Smart Moves is an inspiration to all those who are seeking proven strategies to follow their passion—no matter what their age.

The quarter million liberal arts students who receive diplomas each year will truly benefit from the insights of Smart Moves. But this book is equally helpful for high school students (and their guidance counselors) looking at colleges, for graduates still looking for their life's work, and for parents who want to understand career realities for their children.

An innovative career guide for our stressful, fast-paced world, Smart Moves for Liberal Arts Grads illuminates valuable career lessons with sharp advice and an unparalleled framework for success.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Family Loved It.......2007-10-01

As a sophomore in college, I'm almost to the point of entering the "real world." But instead of feeling unprepared and anxious about this process, I am actually looking forward to it. This is entirely due to Smart Moves, and I cannot even begin to emphasize how much this book has already helped me - even though I'm still 2 1/2 years from graduation!
What really makes this book a pleasure to read is it's format. At the beginning are extraordinarly helpful pieces of advice on what to do in and once you graduate from college. Next, the book goes on to provide real-world examples of people who are enjoying their careers in just about every major field. Smart Moves chronicles their stories while not only including their successes, but their mistakes as well.
At home, my mom and my 17 year old brother looked through the book while it was laying down on the coffee table. They both loved it. Here is what my mom had to say:

"Your purpose in life is not to find yourself...it is to create yourself."
My son, a student at Duke University, received this book from the University the summer between his freshman and sophomore years. He asked me to read it, and I was delighted to find it offered, through biographical examples, some truisms that we had been trying to explain to him.

1. Follow your passion; your happiness and enthusiasm will attract the money you need to survive.
2. Be willing to work hard.
3. It doesn't always matter what you major in, there is a good chance you will change careers several times in your life.
4. Every job you have will teach you something about yourself and give you the experience to make yourself available for the next opportunity.
5. Remain open and flexible.
6. Remain curious and research-oriented.
7. Use your summers between school years to take internships or volunteer in the areas of your interest.
8. Explore the career counseling center early during your undergraduate years.

I felt the lively and entertaining writing style of the authors, Sheila Curran and Suzanne Greenwald, made this book a fun and informative read for both undergraduate students and their families.

Beth Zarian, author, Around the World with Historical Fiction and Folktales.

Once again, I'd recommend Smart Moves to anyone who has an open mind!

5 out of 5 stars A necessary read for every liberal arts grad..........2007-09-11

A refreshing and timely read for every recent college graduate. Curran helps job-seekers (and their parents!) understand the challenges - sychological, cultural & socio-economic - facing every graduating liberal arts major. Her years of experience counseling the best and brightest of the country's youth has taught her a simple truth - happiness is in doing what you love to do.

What's so fascinating is the complete relevance it has to the day-to-day decisions that my 22-30 year-old peers are making every day. I can't tell you how many times I have felt compelled to share the "Smartest Moves" chapter with colleagues who find themselves "disenchanted,"
"disengaged," or otherwise, with their current career path.

Every college graduate should read this book - and so should their parents.

5 out of 5 stars Truly an eye-opener.......2007-09-04

A college sophomore at Duke University, NC, I received a copy of 'Smart Moves' over the summer, at a time when I was extremely confused over which major I should choose, which career path I should follow etc. That was, until I received this book.
Through the stories of 23 other students, all ranging in a wide variety of careers and fields, I have realized that the next 3 years of my life will be about finding out what my passions are and where my interests for the future lie, rather than about working my way towards a preordained career goal on a predetermined path which I might regret later on in life. Several of my course selections and internship plans are now being reinforced after reading this book.
Smart moves has been a really useful eye-opener and myth buster for me, and I highly recommended to all students in liberal arts colleges, regardless of whether they were in a similar position as I was in or not. Read this book, and you would have made your first of many smart moves.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for parents and students.......2007-03-29

Smart Moves provides intersting and useful advice for students as they seek to make the most out of their college experience and determine the right post-college pursuit. The book emphasizes its applicability to both parents and students by having two forewards, one written for each group.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading For My Students.......2007-03-16

Smart Moves is a fantastic resource, which I recommend to all my students, especially to the ones who approach me bewildered and anxious about internship, job, career, life mission issues. I worry about the official and unofficial messages they are receiving from a variety of sources inside and outside the university (e.g., advisors, peers, parents, recruiters, employers).

I frequently lend out my two copies of Smart Moves, and believe it should be required reading for any student seriously considering career issues.

Thanks for writing it!

Important tips and pitfalls are highlighted with bold icons, making this useful as a handy reference as well as a career guide.

Sections on résum&eacutes, interviews, and salary negotiation round out the package, making this the perfect companion for the first-time job hunter or the seasoned professional looking for a change--after all, you don't have to be a dummy to need a little help. A word of warning: if you think you're satisfied with your career, be careful with this book--you might find yourself longing to be a newborn photographer or a dating coach! --Rob Lightner

Book Description

Sure, some people enter preschool knowing what they want to be when they grow up. But most of us aren't so lucky, and we don't get much help. Some parents say things like, "It's your life, you decide." Other parents go to the other extreme, expecting you to follow in their footsteps. It's designed for people of all walks of life to uncover rewarding, viable careers or get in on the ground floor of the next Big Things. What's more, this guide even offers tips to make even a humdrum job much better.

Clearly organized by specific topic areas, you can easily find the topics that appeal to you. You'll uncover information like

And, you'll find a fast yet substantive introduction to more than 500 good careers, including many unlikely suspects!

Despite taking career tests, plowing through fat career guides, and spending hours of reflecting, many people end up falling into their careers more by chance than by choice. Not a good way to ensure career happiness. There is a better way. Read all about it, in Cool Careers For Dummies.

4 out of 5 stars worked for me!.......2007-06-27

I am torn about giving this book 4 stars, and here's why:
I cannot stand the whole "for Dummies" series, I think the title is so demeaning -why would I want to read a book where the publisher just assumes I'm an idiot?
However, I did pick this one up while I was in the middle of a career crisis. And guess what? It worked. I had the book lying around for a while, and finally one morning I picked it up and started flipping through and landed on something that looked really interesting. I did further research and found a school in my area focusing only on this career, and I'm now attending the school happily.
So would it work for you? Maybe. Did it work for me? Heck yes.

5 out of 5 stars A fresh approach.......2007-05-13

The book sets out an approach that considers what the job seeker truly wants in work.

1 out of 5 stars Basic job hunting info and misleading career guidance.......2006-10-30

I came across this book when advising a friend's college-age child who was researching careers and was using this book.

On the plus side, the book does contain info on basic job search skills. I would say that most (if not all of it) is now widely available via the internet.

Very troubling was the inaccurate guidance regarding specific careers - some of it was just outdated, but some of it was inaccurate to the point of being "dangerous" for a reader with little knowledge or experience, and who would choose to spend time/effort pursuing a career based on the info in this book. I would have to recommend against using this book as a key source for making a career choice.

5 out of 5 stars A note from this book's author.......2006-02-13

I am saddened by the utterly unfair and inappropriate posting here by one reader. She had not read the book, but because I am a mere moderate feminist rather than a radical one, she chooses to excoriate me here. A far more unbiased source, USA Today's review of my book said, "From finding the well-suited job to customizing it, this book is full of smart advice." In the Reader's Choice Poll, it was rated the #1 most useful career guide. Here on Amazon, you can read sample material from the book. I encourage you to do that before making your decision.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading.......2004-02-24

Far too many of the suggested careers in this book are long shots, at best. Nemko makes it sound like if you're willing to get the necessary education or put some effort into getting some expreience, you can move into any of the niche areas he recommends in his book. If only that were true. Too many of his recommendations have long ago been discovered, or are simply areas in which your odds of being selected, even if you are a Harvard grad with impeccable credentials, are about the same as winning a state lottery.

Book Description

Succeeding at Your Interview: A Practical Guide for Teachers uses an effective interactive format to present core information about interviewing for a teaching job, document a wide variety of interview processes, guide teacher candidates in developing strategies for interviewing, and increase their confidence in communicating their professional knowledge. In a spiral process, readers are asked to consider scenarios, respond to questions, contemplate the perspective offered by the authors, and modify their responses. The goal is to help teacher candidates develop and articulate a clear idea of their own professional knowledge and of the culture of the schools at which they are interviewing.

Special features:
*Eleven detailed chapters and five interview scenarios engage the reader in continuous reflective practice in the multifaceted activities integral to interviewing--beginning with organizing the job search and proceeding through the entire interview process.
*The scenarios implicitly develop knowledge and the chapters explicitly detail the information.
*Specific interview situations engage readers in articulating their professional knowledge, linking theory and practice.
*"Keep in Mind" comments, Margin Notes, and Decision Trees provide opportunities to reflect on the issues and develop personal responses.
*Sample documents, formats, questions, and responses enhance understanding of evaluation processes.
*Graphic organizers at the beginning and end of each chapter provide visual representations of the concepts and concerns addressed in each chapter, assisting the reader in identifying chapters relevant to their current needs in the job search and in synthesizing, organizing, and reviewing the information contained in the chapter.

5 out of 5 stars This book will make you interview-savvy !.......2003-06-23

Beyond a "Must-Read"--this is a "Must-Do" personal coaching workbook. As a counselor in educational placement, I develop interview tip sheets, classroom seminars and conduct mock interviews for student teachers. This book does more. It walks you through sample interviews and shows you how to "work the questions." The authors clarify the interview process for inexperienced candidates, and provide the tools for anyone (even other-than-teacher job seekers) to interview with confidence and professionalism.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Tool.......2002-06-21

"Succeeding at your interview" is a good resource for anyone entering the field of education. This book gives the reader a step by step guide for achieving a teaching position in the school of his or her choice. Expert guidance is provided on preparing an application, presenting yourself as a professional, and evaluating an interviewer's questions. In addition, the scenario sessions are an excellent tool to avoid being caught unprepared for an interview question. I plan on recommending this book to all of the teachers I know. This would be a great gift for a recent college graduate, or a seasoned professional who is changing career paths.

5 out of 5 stars Guidance From an Experienced Mentor.......2002-06-18

I have taught in a suburban New York school system for 35 years and have served on many interviewing teams. Review of questioning techniques and the interview scenarios can be a great help to teachers and administrators on these teams. But it is especially valuable to the prospective teacher who after reading and studying "Succeeding at Your Interview" will be prepared to face any setting or question posed at an interview. This ability means SUCCESS!

The prospective teacher will gain confidence by becoming familiar with the variety of interview formats. The 5 scenarios are-
1. An Initial School Based One to One Interview
2. An Initial Interview with a School Based Team
3. A District Based Interview with Several Principals
4. A School Based Interview with Role Playing
5. A School Based Interview with a Demonstration Lesson

Becoming familiar with the varied possibilities can prevent being caught off guard and will present a secure, confident candidate.
The reader is exposed to interviewers' questions and techniques in evaluating them. There are 7 issues that are usually discussed in interviews. These issues are reviewed with practice exercises. The questions covered are on the topics of-
1. Yourself
2. Learning Principles
3. Supporting Learning
4. Impressions of Teaching
5. Classroom Lessons
6. Personal Approaches
7. Your Questions

This book also provides guidance with gathering information about potential teaching positions, organizing the application process and suggested readings.

"Succeeding at Your Interview" is a most valuable tool for the prospective and experienced teacher before interviewing for a position as well as for the teacher on the team involved in the interviewing process. Get this book for success!

5 out of 5 stars Within a week of finishing this book, had two interviews and offered a position!.......2007-05-20

I have gone on a few interviews and wasn't being offered any positions, which had been quite frustrating. I thought I have to be missing something and going into the interview not fully knowing what to expect. I decided to go see what would be available to help me secure a teaching job. This book has it ALL. It is an easy read with explanations and presentations of numerous topics in everyday language. This book helps you discover your strengths and weaknesses, presents cover letter and resume tips with examples, suggests role-playing an interview, recommends becoming familiar with the school district through their website prior to the interview, offers the top 21 questions most schools will ask with tips of what they are really asking and tips for answering plus 70 other frequently asked questions, conduct during the interview (dress/body language) including questions to avoid, questions to ask the principal or superintendent at the end of your interview, and your follow-up thank you letter. In addition, the appendix provides 20 pages of educational resources. This book gives you everything you need to get yourself ready for those all important interviews. After you read this book, you will feel confident, calm and best of all, well prepared. The perfect book for anyone who is becoming a new teacher, returning to teaching or pursuing the teacher profession through a nontraditional path. Good Luck!!

    5 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR TEACHERS!!!!!!!.......2006-08-13

Unbelievably useful advice and a true stress relieving guide to getting the job you want!

4 out of 5 stars Good and Practical Advice for Would-Be Teachers.......2000-05-27

Like some other reviewers, I am currently looking for a teaching position. I ordered this book and found it had very good information on where to find jobs, how to write a resume, and how to answer possible interview questions. I would say the resume part was the most useful so far, as few resume books have examples of teacher resumes. From the examples provided I was able to construct a more condensed resume from the three-page one I previously had.

However, the jury is out in so far as whether I will be able to obtain employment in the field even with this advice. The reason I did not give this book five stars is that there was not a whole lot of information for those people who are changing careers in mid-life. Most of the emphasis seemed directed at those traditional college age graduates with little or no employment experience.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have For All Teachers.......2000-02-07

I found this book to be a must have for all teachers. As a recent graduate with a teaching degree, I was nervous about finding the right teaching job for me. I used the techniques and suggestions in the book. I was offered a job from my very first teaching interview.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for those "still looking".......1999-12-11

I just got this book and have only flipped through it, but already I can tell it will be a great asset. I am a recent graduate with a teaching degree. Our last year we had several seminars and workshops on interviews and finding a job. I have notes scattered all over the place. This book puts all the same info in one place and a whole lot more. Really great interview tips. Lots of potential questions and what not to do or say during an interview. I can't wait to read this book in depth! A definite "must have" in the increasing competitiveness of the teaching job market!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for paralegals of all experience levels.......1999-06-30

In my job as Career Development Coordinator for a major ABA-approved paralegal school, I frequently recommend this book to current students and graduates alike. I recommend it to new paralegals as a step-by-step guide to finding a job, and to experienced paralegals as a great tool for making sure that your job-search skills are as sharp as your legal skills.

5 out of 5 stars Greatly improve your employment prospects: Use this resource.......1999-05-24

I loaned this book to a friend who had trouble finding decent paralegal employment. Within 7 days, she had 2 quality offers. I referred her to the chapters on networking, job searches, the interview, and salary negotiation strategies. I also included a separate salary survey. So the book paid immediate dividends for my friend. I also refer to the book frequently. I just completed paralegal school and still use the book for the resume and cover letter information. This book reads easily, cover all of the pertinent subjects, and is useful from the time a paralegal career and education are being considered, untilyour first year in your new job. Experienced paralegals should find all of the chapters relating to job hunting very useful and updated. However, I do have a problem, that is I don't have enough copies to loan to my friends. The book is only helpful when used, though. If you choose to let it collect dust, you will not receive the full benefits of all of the tested tips and advice.

2 out of 5 stars better than nothing- but that's a poor standard.......2007-10-18

There's much, much better out there. This book isn't too good, unless you're completely uninitiated to such information. Many people are.

    But that's a poor standard.

If you doubt my severe review, just look at the more glowing ones carefully.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guide!.......2007-10-15

As a professional corporate recruiter hiring college and MBA students, I can honestly say that this book is the definitive guide to making the leap from college to career. Lindsey's solid advice is written in an an open and friendly tone that will keep both parents and students turning the pages. She truly understands what makes a student an appealing candidate and gives tangible suggestions on how to become one. I recommend this book for all juniors and seniors in college, as well as freshman and sophomores that want to get a jump on preparing for their future. I wish all the students that I interview would read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Reading This Book Should be a Required Reading for all College Students and Recent Graduates.......2007-10-10

I graduated two years ago and I just wish I would have known about Getting from College to Career then. This book gives college students the real tools they need to make a positive and lasting impression as they search for the job of their dreams. Her advice is simple and straightforward without sounding like a lecture. Pollak uses thoughtful wording to dismiss common misconceptions of the typical soon-to-graduate college student. She spends time articulating the importance of remembering that people hiring are people too--nobody wants sub-standard resumes and cover letters that have been copied and pasted to every company in a 100 mile radius. She reminds the reader to remember that not everyone in the real world is going to care if you want a job or not and in order to make the important connections to land a job you are happy with you have to treat all people with respect and genuine interest in their life not just yours. While it may seem like an obvious thing to know, you would be surprised how easily it is forgotten in a frantic job search.
There is no better gift for the college graduate--believe me they will thank you for it.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!.......2007-09-16

I bought this book for my recent college graduate. She had a job within weeks of reading it!

5 out of 5 stars I now feel ready for the Real World!.......2007-08-23

After too many summers spent babysitting, I craved some real job experience I could list on a resume. I embarked on my first internship/job search this spring and spent countless hours sitting in front of my computer, searching how to market myself and prepare for interviews when all I wanted to was to be outside with my friends. By the time I had found an internship, I had found this book, and had found myself wishing I had read it sooner- I could have saved so much time!

Linsey Pollak offers realistic, no-nonsense advice catered to the busy college student while retaining a conversational, unpretentious tone. Having heard the author speak at Tufts University, I already knew that she cared about helping college students successfully transition into young professionals. However, even if I had not heard her speak this passion would be evident as it resonates throughout the book. By covering everything from job hunting, to professional e-mailing, to networking, job shadowing, and even tips on how to build your resume while in school, one read through this book is worth countless visits to even the best Career Service offices and then some.

Getting from College to Career is honest, informational and entertaining. It is an unbelievable resource and will give anyone who reads it an advantage over their peers in an increasingly competitive job market.
