Book Description
The second edition of this thorough reference is an invaluable tool for assessing cosmetic products, addressing both the quality of the product and the effect it has on the skin. Since a product's ultimate purpose is to benefit the skin, it is crucial to have an understanding of how the skin works, how and why a product may or may not penetrate it, and what care individual skin types and conditions may require. It is difficult to discuss product ingredients without correlating product performance to skin function. An expanded section on skin physiology and chemical concepts enables the reader to better understand product performance through a thorough explanation of how chemicals and ingredients interact. The various skin types, conditions, and appropriate ingredients for treatments provide a quick reference to address clients' needs. This enlarged second edition contains over 2,000 ingredients including 200 new and updated entries. Expanded information on antioxidants and their stability, new discussion on aging and sensitive skin, and function of SPF and new sunblock ingredients offering full spectrum sunscreen and sunblock for both UVA and UVB rays has been added.

Overpriced .......2007-09-18
There was very little that I found in this book that I didn't find in other resources on the subject. It's way overpriced for what it delivers.
Milady's Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary.......2007-06-27
In addition to listing many standard ingredients, this book also lists botanicals which are listed by their English name with other common names listed right after. And they are cross-referenced. A very good brief review of skin physiology, function, components, structures and layers along with product penetration and testing and skin types and conditions enhance the book. Great for newbies or experienced skin care professionals.
Terrific Resource.......2005-10-17
The beauty business is wonderful, really it is. There are only a very few players that are truely dishonest when it comes to ingredients, for instance, "renaming" common ingredients. This book will help everyone keep it straight. As a beauty and lifestyle reporter, I keep it on my desk.
FANTASTIC REFERENCE.......2005-10-10
I am currently studying beauty therapy and this book is my lifesaver! it is great for reference, general knowledge etc!
Not to bad.......2005-09-13
The first few chapters I would call "Skin physiology for dummies", the science is much simplified, so don't expect to learn much here. However, the glossary of cosmetic ingredients is very decent, I would definatelly buy this book as a great reference.

Compared to Milady's newest edition ..........2007-01-12
this book is MUCH better. The new edition deleted a LOT of the info from this edition ... guess what? The state board test still asks questions from this book! The new book has color pictures and notes in the margin. BIG DEAL! This edition of this book has helped me pass most of my tests in class. Without it, I would have done much worse. I keep it as reference. Milady, what were you THINKING when you brought out the new edition???? Put the info back into the new edition!!!!
Inaccurate and missleading.......2003-05-03
Working through this book on a skin care course was very frustrating. The medical terms used were inaccurate and often contradictory.
Althought the basic skin care isues were dealt with efficiently the anatomy and physiology references were not consistent with current medical text books.
This publisher has many better books. Avoid this one.
Great text!.......2003-01-08
This book is very thorough, up-to-date, and informative. I found it easy to read and follow, and the contents pages are very well-labeled, making it easy to find the desired information quickly. I would highly recommend this text to anyone looking to learn new skills or brush up on old skills.
So you want to learn about skin care, eh?.......2002-06-18
I also used this book as a text in Aesthetics School - and at the time, I didn't appreciate it as much as now - when I'm working in the field. I find myself going back and reviewing what I may have missed the first time.
This book has got it all!
- How to Portray a Professional Image (you'd be amazed how many don't know this! yikes...=0) )
- A History of Skin Care and Cosmetics
- Bacteriology
- Sterilization & Disinfection for salon safety
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Disorders of the Skin & Special Procedures
- Ingredient & Product Analysis
- Nutrition & Health of the Skin
- Client Consultation & Skin Analysis
- Massage Techniques
- and more....
I have the '99 version and found that it has helpful and effective to answer most questions that I may have had.
Sure, there are a few errors that can easily be modified - but they are not worth missing this book over!
Very Comprehensive and easy to tackle. I recommend!
update the book.......2002-01-24
This textbook is practically the only standard textbook that can be utilized by students preparing to become estheticians. However, the book needs to be brought up to current standards. Do not just print a new edition without updating the information, this stifles the profession!

Perfect Text for entry level students.......2001-04-22
Students will find this book easy to use and understand. The material allows students to start their learning experience at an easy level and move gradually to higher levels. Vocational students will achieve success in reaching their entry-level health career goal with this book. Students easily follow the workbook guidelines and teachers appreciate the easy to follow instructors materials.
The intent of this book.......2001-02-10
This textbook and accompaning materials is written for a specific audience. It is a text that helps English as a second language, returning adults who may not have completed high school and for those needing simple and careful information. In some cases a student in the class may excel and the material seems redundant, etc. The text meets a very important need and the course instructor purchases texts to meet the need of her students. The previous reviewer was very disappointed in the book because of the level it is written for. She is probably a more advanced student.
Horrendous.......2000-11-26
This text is absolutely the most horrendous book I have ever used in a college class. It is written at about a 4th or 5th grade reading level, and within the text will highlight common, everyday words like "familiar", "prioritize" and "accurate" and then in a sidebar will actually define the words for you! I have never been more embarrassed to own a book (which is required for a health care class I must take). In another unbelievable chapter the reader is even told how to add numbers like 2 and 3! I kid you not. (check page 131 for verification) I cannot believe this book is marketed for a college audience, and will most certainly sell this book back at the end of the semester, as it is TOTALLY useless. The writers of this text definitely display a lack of knowledge in the fields of medicine and physiology. Don't waste your money on it.

In-Depth Information.......2006-10-24
This book is great for understanding how to shape a brow that best suits your face. I believe it is intended for use as a text book in cosmetology and esthetics courses, but it provides great in-depth information for styling your brows. If you're seriously interested in learning what styles and shapes suit your face type this is the book for you. I was thourougly satisfied.
A disappointment.......2006-10-12
This book was a huge disappointment. It was very basic and very vague. For example, it would tell you to shape the brow to make their face look longer or shorter, but it wouldn't tell you how to shape the brow in order to do that. All the pictures were small, in black and white, and it was hard to see any detail. I kept on reading on, hoping that I was going to get to the good stuff, but the good stuff never came. I truly felt like I learned nothing and it was supposed to be an instructional book. A waste of money. I was debating returning it, but it doesn't seem worth it to go to the post office and have to pay for shipping it back.
The best book ever written on eyebrow design.......2005-01-06
This eyebrow book is the best educational
material on the market.
After you have read the book do your career a favor and
take the test provided with the book.
I personally learned so much from this book and I am a
professional in the field of Permanent Makeup. In my opinion
this is a must read book for anyone in the field of makeup.
This is a book you'll keep in your personal library for years to come.
All we can do for now is wait for the next book from this talented author.

Milady's Standard Comphrehensive Training for Esthesticians.......2006-03-04
The book is wonderful and a great tool for my course. I received it without delays within a week of ordering.
Too many typos.......2005-08-24
Good inforamtion if I felt like I could trust it. So many typos and mispelled words, I started to question the accuracy of it.
The Esthetician's Bible.......2003-06-12
This is an awesome book for the Esthetician just starting out and those who need a re-fresher. Purchased this book at a convention and cannot put it down. Highly recommended..
Book Description
For decades the primary reference for cosmetology licensure, Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology has undergone the most thorough transformation in its history with this new edition. Milady has totally revamped the organization and contents to bring the Standard into the new century. In its contents and art, both of which are new to this edition, the book reflects the changes in salon and spa treatments, procedures, and products. New chapters such as "Life Skills" by Arlene Alpert and "Communicating for Success" by Catherine Frangie start students on the right path, stressing the soft skills that professionals know is the key to success. NAHA award-winner Mary Brunetti also wrote the chapters "Shampooing, Rinsing, and Conditioning" and "Hair Styling." Ruth Roche, another NAHA-award winner, has created a totally new "Haircutting" chapter, complete with step-by-step technicals on the core cuts. The look of the text mirrors the changes in content, with its open feel, contemporary design, and high-quality photography. Having been developed after extensive analysis by educational design experts, the textbook exhibits the most sophisticated methods for relaying information, stimulating thought, aiding comprehension, and enhancing retention. Central to the book's development was the knowledge that learners need to keep engaged through a visual, inviting display when they turn each page, and that steered the direction of the text design and art program.

Milady's Standard Cosmetology Book Rating.......2007-01-03
Good reference book for anyone going through cosmetology training. We purchased the book for my daughter to keep on hand at home since it's the same book used in her class at school. It's very informative and helpful and will be a reference tool once she gets out on her own and needs to refer back to it. I strongly recommend this book for anyone going into the field of cosmetology.
My complaints for local hairstylists.......2006-01-11
For what the book taught hairstylists about cuts for round, and squared faces are totally wrong. If thte hair has to be styled to lift off the forehead, and come forward: All the hairstylists would do is leave bangs to the side of the client's face. Round faces should not have hair on top of hteir head. That is to crop up a spiky hairdo. To place some hair over the ears and cheeks is to make bangs on the side of the client's face. I have no idea what the editor meant by "keep the hair up on one side." I don't think round, and squared faces should have bangs at all.
If you have to take state boards this is the book you will need.......2005-08-21
This book makes certain that you have a good understanding of the material before you take your state boards and this is very important. You probably will not have the same questions on the test, or they may be phrased differently: but the book definatly covers each chapter well!
Comprehensive and Detailed.......2002-07-24
When I was taking Cosmetology back in the 2000-01 school year, they recommended to purchase this version of Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology. They were only available new in Canada and cost [money], and came with the theory book as well. Our teacher also had the old 1996 version of this textbook for sale, used. However, this is a better purchase. There are more pictures and colors, its not as drab as the previous version. I have to disagree with reviewers who said this is not a detailed book, I found it to be quite detailed and informative in its information. The book meant to be used in a classroom setting, where an instructor teachers and elaborates from this book. You cannot read this book and automatically cut hair, that is where the practical aspect of cosmetology comes in, when you are doing it hands on instead of reading. But this is a helpful tool for aspiring apprentices or students in cosmetology, whether you want to learn about Coloring, Perms, whatever the case, this is definately a worthwhile tool to have.
This is the book my Cosmetology School uses (2000 edition).......2001-11-28
I bought the 1996 version of this book in June of 2000 and within one month I was signed up for cosmetology school. Then I got to school and they used the 2000 edition so I was already prepared. For those who think this book doesn't go into detail please realize that this is a textbook and it is part of a series of books for teaching. There are 2 workbooks that go along with this book. One for Theory and one for Practical. I was given a 1990 edition of this book as well by a friend of mine. The most noticable change between the 3 editions is that the 2000 edition has more actual photographs and fewer illustrations. If you are using this book for school study then I do recommend you buy the state board exam review booklet. Then when you have free time you can quiz yourself. Just remember that this book is meant to be used along with an instructor. If you are looking for a haircutting book only then I don't think you want this one. It only has about 12 pictures.
Book Description
With a growing emphasis on service excellence, cultural diversity, and corporate compliance, health care employees increasingly seek workers with a strong work ethic and well honed "soft skills" - people who communicate appropriately, work well on teams, respect and value differences, use limited resources efficiently, and interact effectively with coworkers, patients and guests. This resource meets the challenge and describes the professional standards that apply to all healthcare workers. Information on the new HIPAA guidelines. Content on resume writing and job interviewing. Details the importance of professionalism; personal skills such as appearance, time management, problem solving and critical thinking; and personal and professional growth and advancement. All health professionals and students.
Book Description
This book presents the industry-adopted level system of haircoloring, which analyzes the lightness or darkness of a color and eliminates the guess work of haircoloring. As more and more color companies use the technique it becomes essential for the salon professionals to be educated in the process. It provides sound and foolproof techniques, making the system a very attractive and appealing technique to learn and use.
Customer Reviews:
Good intro book.......2005-12-07
This book gives a good introduction on hair coloring, a lot of theory and a large number of interesting tips, however it falls short on the most important topic: Formulating. The book explains all the elements to consider when formulating, but doesn't explain in depth how to combine them all and how to build the actual formula for every case you might encounter.
Less important, this book is printed in black and looks as if it was designed for color printing and comes back an annoying number of times on "how to make big money coloring hair".
Despite the shortcomings, there are interesting thing to learn from this book and it might be useful as complement to the other Milady haircoloring book.
MILADY'S STANDARD HAIR COLORING MANUEL AND ACTIVITIES BOOK: A LEVEL SYSTEM APPROACH.......2005-07-21
Not what I thought it would be. The book emphasizes the activities more than the instruction. There are some good things in the book overall as far as types of haircoloring procedures. Overall, I wish I had not ordered the book and kept my $35.99
This is a very useful book!.......2000-08-22
Hi! I'm a student of cosmetology and I bought this book looking for complementary information besides my courses at my Cosmetology School. I found this text very very useful and above all, very easy to understand. This book covers every basic knowledge a student and haircolor lover needs to know: Color process, fillers, corrective color, the level system, basic color applications (virgin, retouch and artificial pigments removal), the law of color, lots of tips, cautions, recommendations and more. The book also includes some more advanced techniques such as foiling, bleaching and the special techniques which I found very interesting and beautiful to try, they are 15 in total and are all included and explained in detail in one chapter. There are also short sections of questions and activities with their corresponding answers (they are short and practical!) At the end of the book the reader will find a glossary, a Manufacturers' Hotline Numbers list and some "Note pages" for the reader to wrote down notes, questions, formulas, ideas or whatever he/she wants. I highly recommend this book to all the students who need stronger bases and to every person who loves color and wants to do it the right way!!!
