Top Notch.......2007-07-26
This is your Photoshop Bible that you should keep with you at all times! I just hate that I paid $65 for it at Borders, when I could have gotten it here for MUCH less!
Easy to understand.......2007-07-03
This book has photos that are easy to see, explains things as to why (unlike most books) and goes into depth on how to create a website in Photoshop. If you are looking to get this book for scrapbooking, try looking at digital magazine subscriptions. While this is a great book, it doesn't show how to make elements or how to even scrapbook. However, you won't be disappointed if you purchased this book. You'll learn a lot that can be applied once you open your scrapbooking files.
WOW!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-30
I waited for ever for this book to come out. I loved the last one and wanted the new one when CS first came out. It is almost twice as big as the last one, because each section has been enhanced. enhancing photos section is almost twice the size, as photoshop gets better they keep up. if you already worked with photoshop it is really easy to skim through by just looking at the side images, which also help when u are a beginner and have no idea what they are talking about in the main section. all the wow books seem to feature that system.
WOW you can learn alot from this book!.......2007-06-29
Well written for the novice to the advanced user. (There's always something you'll learn).
Worth the money.
This book is awesome!.......2007-05-23
This is the ultimate BIBLE and a MUST have for all PhotoShop users! It shows you all the tips & tricks to create very professional graphics.

Usability design is one of the most important--yet often least attractive--tasks for a Web developer. In Don't Make Me Think, author Steve Krug lightens up the subject with good humor and excellent, to-the-point examples.
The title of the book is its chief personal design premise. All of the tips, techniques, and examples presented revolve around users being able to surf merrily through a well-designed site with minimal cognitive strain. Readers will quickly come to agree with many of the book's assumptions, such as "We don't read pages--we scan them" and "We don't figure out how things work--we muddle through." Coming to grips with such hard facts sets the stage for Web design that then produces topnotch sites.
Using an attractive mix of full-color screen shots, cute cartoons and diagrams, and informative sidebars, the book keeps your attention and drives home some crucial points. Much of the content is devoted to proper use of conventions and content layout, and the "before and after" examples are superb. Topics such as the wise use of rollovers and usability testing are covered using a consistently practical approach.
This is the type of book you can blow through in a couple of evenings. But despite its conciseness, it will give you an expert's ability to judge Web design. You'll never form a first impression of a site in the same way again. --Stephen W. Plain
Topics covered:
- User patterns
- Designing for scanning
- Wise use of copy
- Navigation design
- Home page layout
- Usability testing
Book Description
Five years and more than 100,000 copies after it was first published, it's hard to imagine anyone working in Web design who hasn't read Steve Krug's "instant classic" on Web usability, but people are still discovering it every day. In this second edition, Steve adds three new chapters in the same style as the original: wry and entertaining, yet loaded with insights and practical advice for novice and veteran alike. Don't be surprised if it completely changes the way you think about Web design.
Three New Chapters!
- Usability as common courtesy -- Why people really leave Web sites
- Web Accessibility, CSS, and you -- Making sites usable and accessible
- Help! My boss wants me to ______. -- Surviving executive design whims
"I thought usability was the enemy of design until I read the first edition of this book. Don't Make Me Think! showed me how to put myself in the position of the person who uses my site. After reading it over a couple of hours and putting its ideas to work for the past five years, I can say it has done more to improve my abilities as a Web designer than any other book.
In this second edition, Steve Krug adds essential ammunition for those whose bosses, clients, stakeholders, and marketing managers insist on doing the wrong thing. If you design, write, program, own, or manage Web sites, you must read this book." -- Jeffrey Zeldman, author of Designing with Web Standards
Customer Reviews:
Essential tool for any website admin!.......2007-10-25
Steve Krug flawlessly (and colorfully) presents the need for website usability testing and affordable, easy-to-implement strategies for making your site function more efficiently, no matter the number of users. Steve's strategies seem so basic, but anyone who uses the web at all knows that most sites have at least some sort flaw when it comes to usability. Steve's recommendations are by no means a panacea for a site's problems, but they're a great start. Anyone who writes for, develops content for or administers a website at work or home needs to read (and re-read) this book. Steve also happens to be a very nice guy and will most certainly respond if you have any questions for him.
Definitely not worth reading.......2007-10-22
I am definitely not a usability expert but I was expecting much more substance from a "self proclaimed" expert. The examples are so obvious, dumbed down and old (from 1999-2000). I think this book should entirely be written with Web 2.0 in mind. I agree that design principles do not change over time, and this book is not about technology, but users expect more and more with new technologies. While some design patterns stay the same, some evolve and become expected with the advent of newer technologies.
Don't waste your time with this book, and buy a more recently written book for people who really want to know about usability.
A thin book with everything you need.......2007-10-13
This book is excellent. It's very accessible and easy reading without being superficial. It's not a usability cookbook, it actually makes you understand its principles and gives you critical sense to analyze any website and see what's wrong (or right) with it.
I just couldn't find any negative points about the book.
eye-opening analysis.......2007-10-07
I'm not a designer and I would by nature make many of the mistakes Krug points out in this great book. Krug's reasoning and reasoned approach that he presents in this book is invaluable.
Fantastic - Easy to Understand and Use.......2007-10-06
This book on internet usability has not only changed the way I design websites, it has changed my thinking on many areas of life. The other day I was asked to review a print media item and I kept saying to the designer - "Don't Make Me Think!" The idea of designing easy to use, simple to understand websites is so simple that it is often overlooked. This is a fantastic read. I'm halfway through my second reading of it.

The Title Says It all.......2007-08-17
If you want to go back to your school days and have no interaction with the subject matter then this book is OK. But to work on your photos and learn what you want to do to them forget it. Way to structured, more suited to a textbook in a real class room where you can ask the teacher "how do I do this", forget it.
UGH! Frustrating and too project driven........2007-08-06
I imagine this book would be fine for someone who has never used Photoshop, and just wants to be walked through a tiny bit of the program. This was a required text for a graphics class on electronic imagery, and I found it to be frustratingly limiting, to say the least.
For instance, one project has you going into a folder to access the background and other images for a collage. This is fine if that is what you want to do, but what if you want to find your own background, add your own images, or heaven forbid, explore some of the possibilities with the huge selection of tools Photoshop offers? This book covers just a tiny portion of a drop in the proverbial bucket, and I found myself supplementing this text with SEVERAL other books, as it is a very "think inside the box" kind of text. There are a myriad of ways to do things within the Photoshop program. (Just one of the great joys, in my opinion, of working with Photoshop) I don't believe this book in any way, shape, or form, relays that to the reader.
If you are looking for a good introductory text for Photoshop, keep looking! This one is sadly lacking!
Nice.......2007-07-05
This is an excellent product for any beginner. I had no clue about CS2 until I started this book. This should be in your library if you're using CS2
Adobe Photoshop CS2 Classroom in a Book.......2007-06-10
This book is the worst photoshop book I have ever used! In almost evey lesson he leaves out intructions. He acts like you did the lesson before. He does eveything the hard way. I hate this book and I would not give it a star. It takes forever to finish and I have to go to my NAPP help to do it the right way. I have not learned anything from this book. Don't buy it. Deb
Amazing.......2007-06-09
Along with the disc, the step-by-step instructions to do certain exercises, is just what I needed!!! This book was a requirement for school, and I know I'll be using it for a VERY long time to come!!!

Quite useful.......2007-10-23
I've been working with Illustrator over the past months, and this book helps me to understand some quite useful topics. The books is writen in a easy-to-follow way, so you can go chapter by chapter, or just jump to a desired function. Also, the book is full of highlighted items, so its easy to follow one example that leads you to new and useful tips and tricks.
Low rating not product, but Amazon crappy service!.......2007-10-03
Two different orders made on same day, Amazon charged me for product twice and sent me two copies of the book I had ordered. I despise overseas customer service! Could not understand them, period! Website said they would not need verification of my account since I had contacted them through the website, Wrong! I am curious I they were dinking around or if the website is wrong. I do not trust them now with my information. Second attempt got english speaking person, maybe American, but seemed the be standoff-ish as if they could tell I had called before. Said my problem could have been a cookie that was on my computer from the Amazon website and this was why the item was sent twice. Given a couple of drawn out solutions. Very frustrating! Found link to send book back to Amazon as a wrong ordered item. I was not given this option on the phone. I want them to have their property back and I want it done quick so I don't have to pay interest on the charge on my account for this item. Absolute nightmare! I could have bought local, saved money and my time! I'll go elsewhere!!!!
SEE SPOT RUN.......2007-09-29
I signed up for a computer graphics illustrator class at the college and after the first week almost dropped out. A friend sugested I buy ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR CLASSROOM IN A BOOK. With the aid of the book I learned the program, applied my creative skills, completed the class with an A grade. The ADOBE CLASSROOM IN A BOOK series has been a real help to me.
Great Book.......2007-09-22
I really like this book because it helped me learn new things that wasn't taught in school. I which I had bought this book and others like it before I spent so much money going to graphic design school online.
If you are interested in learning graphic design, get this book.
Thorough, Easy to Follow.......2007-09-14
This books gives a very thorough walk-through of Illustrator CS2. If you already have knowledge of other design software, or have lightly used Illustrator previously, the chapters are set up in a methodical manner that are easy to follow and cover all of the options available in this powerful software. The book comes with a CD containing practice files, which further enhances the learning experience.
Over the past year I had taught myself how to use Illustrator, but going through this book has completely raised my level of expertise.
It does help if you are not a complete novice, but if you are, you will learn everything you need to know to create vector art.

Must have.......2007-09-23
If you are inexperienced to the world of writing this is a book you need to have to help you on that long journey
My Advice.......2007-07-29
I speak to audiences all over the country. After every speech there are always two or three people who come up and ask advice on getting published. I give them the customary talk about writing every day and having persistence in the face of rejection. I also tell every one of them to go home, get on Amazon and order Writer's Market.

It is a tool which may be of help .......2007-06-07
This work is a tool which may be of help to you as a writer. It is written in its introductory overview pages with , what seems to me, good sense and understanding. There is a lot of good advice about how to query, and where to look for markets, and how in general to approach the whole business of pursuing 'sales' of work. It is not a book which can tell you truly about how to write in a deep or interesting or uniquely individual way. That is not it's purpose.
But again I think it can be of help to many.
A couple of reservations from my own area of interest. Once they had a separate listing in the index on a topic which specially interested me "Judaism" . Now the publishers on Judaism are mixed up with the general Religion publishers.
I searched a couple of publishing houses I am thinking to send manuscripts to. The information provided was extremely scanty . But then again 'Writer's Market' does remind its user to supplement it by searching the websites of the publishers' listed.
Again it gives the rules and the etiquette for proper submission, gives information on pricing. It also includes some individual success stories from different areas of writing.
On the whole for the writer eager to sell work this is a work which truly may help.
Basic information for fiction and non-fiction writers.......2007-05-17
I found the Writer's Market 2007 Deluxe Edition by Robert Lee Brewer to be informative; however, I had already located another publication that led me to the sources that I sought for promoting MY book.
Nonetheless, the Writer's Market is now a part of my book publishing/marketing reference resources collection.
Also, regardless of which book/magazine used as a source of information, it is ultimately up to the individual(s) to do the "leg work," or delegate the efforts to someone/others, in their particular promotion efforts.
At any rate, I believe that the book is worth purchasing.

Writer's Market 2007.......2007-05-04
This is what I call the writer's bible as it includes a variety of marketplaces for your work. It's an essential book for all writers, published and unpublished.
It's a valuable research tool, and one that I encourage all of my students to purchase when they embark upon their writing careers.

Customer Reviews:
Tons of information!.......2007-10-20
I know some may disagree, but I find this book aptly named. I use it less as a course and more as a referance book. It's one of those "bedside" manuals you can just pick up and open anywhere. It contains tones of great information that is of relevance no matter wether you are running "Shake" or not. Some of it is above me but this never worries me as one day it won't be and that's the day you say "wow, this was really money well spent". Sure, this book leans heavilly towards Shake and if you use Shake it is VERY helpful. But I was doing a Key in After effects and remembered a tip on chroma bluring from a "Shake" section of the book ... helped enormously. Great Book. Highly Recomended.
Provides the building blocks to VFX with Shake........2007-06-27
Four stars. A fifth star would have been earned for a better indexing or cross-reference. Otherwise a top notch, very informative book.
I have experience with film making and with Editing on Final Cut Pro. I was new to VFX, but I'm not anymore after reading this book!
Having seen Shake in action, I wanted to learn more. This books focus on Shake and the fact that a trial version ships with the book is the reason I bought it.
This book is a reference book. It explains, in detail, terms used in the VFX industry (clean plate, matchmoving, etc.) that any filmmaker or budding VFX artist will need to know if even just to communicate clearly with VFX professionals. The entries in the book are punctuated with walk-through tutorials that show you how to accomplish (in Shake) the specific effect. This is a good thing.
I had a project on my suite that needed some pretty hefty FX work. This book armed me with the right concepts and understanding so that I could plan the steps I'd need to take to accomplish the FX. In my case it was turning the request to "Make that person a ghost" into build a clean background plate, rotoscope the actor, invent a ghosty look, and then put it all back together. Until I had read the book and understood the individual steps involved, I didn't know where to begin.
Overall, this is a very informative reference book written in a witty and accessible style. It is VERY Shake oriented, which is, again, WHY I bought it. This is the kind of book an FX pro (or newbie) will reference many times as they work on future projects.
Fine book.......2007-06-07
I was already aware of most of the topics covered in this book, but it helped understand them better and be able to explain accurately to anyone asking. Its also well updated to current industry standards. its in no way complete as an Encyclopedia, needs future voulmes to do that.
In short-A text book for every student of visual effects.
Cons: The DVD files can be accessed only in a MAC (not for PC).
A most complete textbook for VSFX..........2007-03-08
My humble congratulations to the authors who have teamed up with Apple to bring us (my Visual Effects Dept. students and I) a most complete textbook. In my opinion, this book rates in the current top five of all serious resources in the teaching & learning of Visual Effects at the College and Graduate levels. In addition to that, for those of us teaching compositing and matte painting, I would rate this book as the current number one textbook on these topics. A must-read, for a serious student of the Art and Craft of Visual Effects.
Deepest respects,

PHP is far more than a cult language or open-source icon. It's a remarkably capable language that's well integrated with lots of technologies--notably mSQL and MySQL database servers--and quite easy to learn. Programming PHP helps you up the PHP learning curve, very nearly guaranteeing that you'll find in its pages an example that illustrates every fundamental aspect of the language and its most important extension modules. Plus, there's some cool advanced stuff, like recipes for manipulating images, working with Extensible Markup Language (XML) content, and generating Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files. Rasmus Lerdorf invented PHP and quarterbacks its ongoing evolution, so there's little question of the content's authority.
The authors use a Talmudic style to explore PHP's capabilities and explain them to their readers, meaning that they like to present code and commentary in close formation, with each enhancing the other. Typically, they'll present a capability generically and show the relevant code. Then they'll dig into variations on the theme, calling attention to required code alterations as they go. This is a book about PHP itself, so practically no attention is paid to PHP Builder or other development tools. Regardless, this book will help you solve programming challenges with PHP, and enable you to write efficient, attractive code. --David Wall
Topics covered: The PHP programming language, for people who are coming to PHP with a bit of programming experience in other languages or who want to expand their existing PHP knowledge beyond the basics. Sections deal with the core language, as well as HTTP session management, database connectivity (to MySQL and Oracle, as well as with PHP Extension and Application Repository--PEAR), graphics file manipulation, XML parsing, and PDF creation. There are instructions for building a PHP extension library in C, as well as a function reference and guide to existing extensions.
Book Description
Programming PHP, 2nd Edition, is the authoritative guide to PHP 5 and is filled with the unique knowledge of the creator of PHP (Rasmus Lerdorf) and other PHP experts. When it comes to creating websites, the PHP scripting language is truly a red-hot property. In fact, PHP is currently used on more than 19 million websites, surpassing Microsoft's ASP .NET technology in popularity. Programmers love its flexibility and speed; designers love its accessibility and convenience.
As the industry standard book on PHP, all of the essentials are covered in a clear and concise manner. Language syntax and programming techniques are coupled with numerous examples that illustrate both correct usage and common idioms. With style tips and practical programming advice, this book will help you become not just a PHP programmer, but a good PHP programmer. Programming PHP, Second Edition covers everything you need to know to create effective web applications with PHP. Contents include:
- Detailed information on the basics of the PHP language, including data types, variables, operators, and flow control statements
- Chapters outlining the basics of functions, strings, arrays, and objects
- Coverage of common PHP web application techniques, such as form processing and validation, session tracking, and cookies
- Material on interacting with relational databases, such as MySQL and Oracle, using the database-independent PEAR DB library and the new PDO Library
- Chapters that show you how to generate dynamic images, create PDF files, and parse XML files with PHP
- Advanced topics, such as creating secure scripts, error handling, performance tuning, and writing your own C language extensions to PHP
- A handy quick reference to all the core functions in PHP and all the standard extensions that ship with PHP
Praise for the first edition:
"If you are just getting into the dynamic Web development world or you are considering migrating from another dynamic web product to PHP, Programming PHP is the book of choice to get you up, running, and productive in a short time."
--Peter MacIntrye, eWeek
"I think this is a great book for programmers who want to start developing dynamic websites with PHP. It gives a detailed overview of PHP, lots of valuable tips, and a good sense of PHP's strengths."
--David Dooling, Slashdot.org

Excellent PHP Primer and Quick Reference.......2007-10-11
I read through this in a couple evenings. It highlighted some PHP functions which I should be using to streamline my code. It also overviews available PHP extensions such as database interfaces and PDF and graphics libraries. Nice to have a summary all in one place and right at hand.
nice if you'ree a programer.......2007-10-01
I really liked this book. I'ts easy to understand, and it covers the basics. Just as a warning, this book is focused in people that already have som basic knowledrge of programing and HML.
Excellent book by Rasmus Ledorf.......2007-07-22
I can certainly recommend this one for the upcoming PHP developer. The insight contained within was valuable.
The book is 'OK', but not great.......2007-06-09
I used this book at work, and wasn't impressed.
Now, maybe it's the language itself that lacks consistency and isn't all that interesting, I don't know.
I wasn't as much exceited reading the book as I was when I read, for example, K&R (C), Paul Graham and Peter Seibel (Lisp), Meyers (C++). The book will help you get things done, no doubt, but there doesn't seem to be anything special about it.
Really a great PHP book.......2007-05-05
And I am not saying this lightly. I am writing about 2nd edition. This is a great PHP book, even for a beginner to PHP. I have been programming for years now, and read a bunch of programming books, and this is one of the best books I read so far. It is easy to follow, easy to understand, and it covers everything you need to become a greap PHP programmer.

Proving once and for all that standards-compliant design does not equal dull design, this inspiring tome uses examples from the landmark CSS Zen Garden site as the foundation for discussions on how to create beautiful, progressive CSS-based Web sites. By using the Zen Garden sites as examples of how CSS design techniques and approaches can be applied to specific Web challenges, authors Dave Shea and Molly Holzschlag provide an eye-opening look at the range of design methods made possible by CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). By the time you've finished perusing the volume, you'll have a new understanding of the graphically rich, fully accessible sites that CSS design facilitates. In sections on design, layout, imagery, typography, effects, and themes, Dave and Molly take you through every phase of the design process--from striking a sensible balance between text and graphics to creating eye-popping special effects (no scripting required).

I haven't read the book yet.......2007-09-15
.. but I fully expect to. Having followed the csszengarden site from nearly the beginning, I wouldn't miss it. I was learning css on my own when I came across the site.. being a visual artist, and unabashedly a "web DESIGNER" - I finally FINALLY felt that I had found my calling, my mecca on the pages of the site with all of the talented designers.
I learned SO MUCH downloading the css and trying my own stuff -- I actually credit the site for helping me to finally understand css and how it could be stretched - how it could be made to do the things I had always wanted to do. My kudos to everyone involved!
Perfect!!!.......2007-09-13
I recieved my order fast, the book was in great shape, and wouldn't hesitate to order from amazon! Great service!
The Zen of CSS Design.......2007-07-15
I'm not a "graphics" person. I struggle to understand creative design and how to build it in code. This book brought these elements together and really explained the process.
This is not a beginner's book on coding and design. It is more of an applications manual for someone who has worked with CSS. I was frequently looking at some area of a design and asking myself how, or why, did he do that? I don't think there was ever an example that left that question unanswered. If it wasn't explicit, there was always enough information and discussion to be able to figure it out. Including the code with the illustrations and explanations really tied the processes together.
This book will be kept on my 'A' references shelf. There is a detailed index and the example home pages were grouped in sections: Design, Layout, Imagery, Typography, Special Effects, and Reconstruction. Therefore, it will be easy to come back and locate relevant information.
Zen of CSS Design.......2007-05-14
A great book with excellent examples and descriptions on how to implement a CSS web solution.
Wonderful Layouts.......2007-05-09
This book is fantastic for layouts and suggestions. While it is not the simplist thing for the beginner it is very good for layouts and suggestions on ways to make your own CSS better and HTML lighter.
Book Description
With its ever-tightening integration with Adobe's full suite of creative products and its own increasingly sophisticated feature set, InDesign is winning legions of Quark and FrameMaker converts. If you’re among them–or if you've decided to sidestep those programs altogether–you need this book. In these pages, the Adobe Creative Team uses a series of project-based lessons to provide a thorough grounding in the InDesign school of page design. You'll find step-by-step lessons in InDesign CS2 fundamentals plus plenty of the advanced tips and techniques you need to take your page designs to the next level. The workbook-style format includes self-paced lessons followed by review questions to reinforce the knowledge and a CD with all of the files required to complete the book's projects. Throughout, special focus is given to the features new to InDesign CS: the new Adobe Bridge file browser; object styles, snippets, smarter text handling, the ability to hide or show layers in Photoshop and PDF files, and much more.

Very helpful.......2007-05-09
I am a convert from PageMaker, so I was already familiar with a lot of the functions in InDesign. However, the book has still been very beneficial. The examples and already finished or almost finished documents that come on the disc are great tools to learn with.
The book is easy to read, despite being written by Adobe. Sometimes the only way to learn is to buy a book written by a third party, but I've found that is not the case here. Adobe did a great job.
What about CS3?.......2007-04-21
I'm only giving it 1 star because CS3 has now been released, so the book is of modest value except for those who wish not to take advantage of the new and improved. Try taking this one to a used book store and you'll see that at "1" it's over-rated.
Aside from that, this is an excellent series of manuals, particular valuable as software publishers no longer include manuals! As they say at O'Reilly: "The book that should have been in the box."
Adobe InDesign CS2 Classroom in a Book.......2007-03-15
This book is extremely helpful with the Adobe InDesign program I wish I would have had it a year ago!!
