1 out of 5 stars Poor Intro to Digital.......2005-05-22

This book was assigned for my undergrad intro digital logic class. It is probably the worst possible introduction to the subject. The material is only mildly to moderately difficult in practice, but the authors managed to make it convoluted. If you are unfortunate enough to have this book assigned, I suggest that you purchase another textbook on the subject, and just get the homework problems from your classmates or from the reserve copy at the library.

1 out of 5 stars A Book Not To Read.......2002-11-01

This book is absolutely horrible. The Professor who teaches this class with this book HE WROTE, is utterly dispicible because of his teaching ability. This professor, at UC Irvine does not know the one bit in teaching a COMPLICATED subject like Digital Systems to a class who has had little to no experiece with this type of work. I hope this book is revoked for any reason, and hope that professor reads this review in order to gain some knowledge about the way he is teaching a class of Engineers in an era where knowledge is not automatically achieved, rather taught by knowledgable instructors.

2 out of 5 stars Tell your teacher to get another book!.......2000-06-26

I used this book for an introductory logic design class. I was able to learn from it, but it was difficult. The teacher didn't even use it much. The book was not well written and hard to understand. I recommend learning from another book.

2 out of 5 stars Good reference, poor for beginners.......2000-03-29

I began learning about hardware design with this book. Now I use it for reference.

But for beginners, this is not a very good book. Although hardware design is somewhat difficult to explain, the book does not analyze subjects in detail or how circuits work. When it does try to explain topics, it does not do so clearly and provides few examples. Unless you have outside help (such as a teacher, professor, teaching assistant, etc.), I would definitely recommend finding another book to learn about hardware design because you will struggle while trying to figure out how things work (if you are a novice).

1 out of 5 stars If you want something detailed, this book ain't it.......1999-05-25

This book is very "bare" when and it doesn't offer enought examples. This book is difficult to understand and takes deciphering the material takes many tedious hours. Therefore, I would like to conclude by saying this is absolutly the worst text book that was ever written.

Book Description

Today's electronic design and test engineers deal with several types of subsystems, namely, digital, memory, and mixed-signal, each requiring different test and design for testability methods. This book provides a careful selection of essential topics on all three types of circuits. The outcome of testing is product quality, which means `meeting the user's needs at a minimum cost.' The book includes test economics and techniques for determining the defect level of VLSI chips. Besides being a textbook for a course on testing, it is a complete testability guide for an engineer working on any kind of electronic device or system or a system-on-a-chip.

The book consists of:

Part I: Introduction, Test Process and ATE, Test Economics and Product Quality, Fault Modeling;

Part II: Logic and Fault Simulation, Testability Measures, Combinatorial ATPG, Sequential ATPG, Memory Test, DSP-Based Analog Test, Model-Based Analog Test, Delay Test, IDDQ Test;

Part III: DFT and Scan Design, BIST, Boundary Scan, Analog Test Bus, System Test and Core-Based Design, Future Testing;

Appendices: Cyclic Redundancy Code Theory, Primitive Polynomials, Books on Testing; Bibliography: over 700 entries.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not a good book for ATE.......2003-10-20

It seems to me it is just a summary of work done by others in
the ATE field over the years. The explanations of how a device
fault is detected are not clear in most of the cases presented
in the book. The book emphasizes too much on fault
modeling but not enough on test applications and techniques.

Certainly not a good text book for students nor it
is a good book for ATE engineers. However, if you are looking
for some quick reference, this book is a good place to start
because it contains brief summaries of other people's work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for VLSI testing........2003-04-19

This book is, as far as I know, the most comprehensive texbook on VLSI testing available at the moment. It is based on current trends and techniques in the field. After all, the authors are pioneers in this area. A worthy successor to Abramovici's earlier textbook, which, I think is beginning to look increasingly archaic. As a guy who's taken a course in testing by the authors (we were the guinea pigs for the book, actually)and is currently working in the VLSI testing area, I strongly recommend it to anyone looking to build strong testing fundamentals.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-09-24

So far I've enjoyed this book. I'm a grad student taking a microwave engineering course, this was an additional book recommended by the instructor. I found that there is far more discussion in this book and more steps taken for deriving forumlae, making for an easier to read and interesting book.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be deceived by the image on the cover !.......2006-05-04

With the photo of the IC die on the cover and the word Planer in the title I was concerned this would be focused on monolithic integrated circuits but it is not. Excellent coverage of the topic in a light writing style that does not avoid the technical details. A great piece of work Mr Lee.

5 out of 5 stars Quirky, insightful, historical, very readable..........2005-08-30

You have to like a book that is readable (almost conversational), gives historical insight (how 50&75ohm coax became the "standard"), at times is humorous ("But wait, 30 ohms(that gives optimal power handling) does not equal 50, even for relatively large values of 30.") but does not shy away from the some more advanced but interesting (at least to me) derivations of things like estimating fringing capacitance by use of a variational method. This is an excellent book to have fun with and read for insight as a first introduction to some RF topic or to gain further insight and perspective once you have some mastery of some topic, but the level is somewhat uneven, so that for many topics you may wind up having to use a more traditional, dry standard text like Ramo's Fields and Waves if you seriously need to design something. However, this is a great text in the sense that it is unique and so well-written and interesting that if it is around your desk, you will find yourself thumbing through it when you get bored of a task at the office just to learn something new to break up the day.

    Book Description

This book examines in detail the basic properties and design, including chip integration, of CMOS and bipolar VLSI devices and discusses the various factors that affect their performance. The authors begin with a thorough review of the relevant aspects of semiconductor physics, and proceed to a description of the design of CMOS and bipolar devices. The optimization of these devices for VLSI applications is also covered. The authors highlight the intricate interdependencies and subtle tradeoffs between those device parameters, such as power consumption and packing density, that affect circuit performance and manufacturability. They also discuss in detail the scaling, and physical limits to the scaling, of CMOS and bipolar devices. The book contains many exercises, and can be used as a textbook for senior undergraduate or first-year graduate courses on microelectronics or VLSI devices. It will also be a valuable reference volume for practicing engineers involved in research and development in the electronics industry.

    3 out of 5 stars Reader.......2006-12-15

If you seek to understand devices from a physical point of view this book just fails to live up to it.I read the chapters on MOSFETs' thoroughly and also the section of second chapter which describes MOS capacitor. The feel you get when you read the book is somewhat hard to write, it has all the relevant equations but lacks a physical insight. For example the quantum confinement of the inversion layer is so briefly described that someone reading the topic for the first time will never be able to make sense out of it.For those who know device physics, rather well, this book provides great material, drawn primarily from the authors' experience at IBM's T J watson research lab.As a suggestion Dr.Taur has a few papers, available online for free download at IBM's research and development journal,it will be a good idea to explore it and the other allied material appearing there. For the starter I will suggest to pick up Tsividis book on "Operation and modeling of MOS Transistor" and concurrently try the present volume.A better physical model can be developed.

5 out of 5 stars Bible for microelectronic device engineer.......2006-06-04

It covers most of the interesting fields in short channel device research/engineering. In addition, there is one chapter focused on device design from scaling point of view; and another one talking about the CMOS logic performance, which is not common in device book.

Also, this is an excellent device book balanced between physics and mathematics - another plus.

5 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Modern VLSI Devices.......2006-02-18

It's new and arrived very quickly. The book is very informative.

4 out of 5 stars Frustrating, but recommended.......2003-04-10

The physicist in me wants to give this book 2 stars and the mathemetician in me wants to give it 5 stars, while the engineer and organizer in me wants to give it 4 stars. End result is 4 stars, but frustrated with the linear grading system. Here's a bit more on why.

Yes, as previous reviewers have said, this book gives you what many similarly named books don't: an advanced-level, industrial-view, practioner look at semiconductor device operation and design. It is well organized from that standpoint, which originally drew me in wholeheartedly.

My criticism is that when you really get into it -- and I have, by reading every page from start to finish -- the authors sometimes only use the math equations to explain why things happen. I guess this is okay in some science topics say, for abstract problems in QM matrix formalism when the "thing" is difficult to visualize physically, but this is a working, quasi-classical, real-world "machine"; physical explanations should almost always be possible. Writing about the concepts in addition to the math equations is important because most of us don't remember dozens of math equations day-to-day, but only the relationships often buttressed up by physical pictures. For example, on page 187 an equation (and equations are models of reality themselves containing their own limitations) is used to show (prove?) "the gate work function has a major effect on channel profile design, since, through the V_fb term, it has a strong influence on the MOSFET threshold voltage". In addition to the math symbolic relationship, this could also be said with physical underpinnings or something more physical sounding than "through the V_fb term".

People tend to solve problems either with: (1) pictures, (2) math, or (3) words, or combinations of these, so perhaps this is just a matter of which style is more 'natural' to a person. However, this pattern of occasionally only using math symbols to explain advanced concepts is done throughout the text. I think for an advanced text, deep physical understanding is sought, not just developing equations from standard theories; the theories breakdown under some conditions and only a good understanding of the advanced concepts will inform you when that might happen. Such understanding allows you to be on the lookout for the exceptions, which is important for the practicing engineer or researcher in this field.

    5 out of 5 stars best textbook i used.......2002-05-19

this is the best textbook i used. you can realize how deep and clear of understanding the device physics the Dr. Taur is!
my feeling is many professors at university teaching this kind of device classes only understand 70% - 80% of vlsi device physics
even the ieee fellow! i believe many readers agree what i said.
based on my 7 yrs industrial research experience, i recommend
person who wants to be a device engineer should read this book, and don't skip any chapter. It's not easy for a circuit designer to understand all the contents, but it's helpful sometimes for their design. anyway, i suggest professors to use this book as a senior device textbook, and professors/IEEE fellows can clarify their confused concepts from this book.

    Book Description

Design of Low-Voltage, Low-Power CMOS Operational Amplifier Cells describes the theory and design of the circuit elements that are required to realize a low-voltage, low-power operational amplifier. These elements include constant-gm rail-to-rail input stages, class-AB rail-to-rail output stages and frequency compensation methods. Several examples of each of these circuit elements are investigated. Furthermore, the book illustrates several silicon realizations, giving their measurement results.
The text focuses on compact low-voltage low-power operational amplifiers with good performance. Six simple high-performance class-AB amplifiers are realized using a very compact topology making them particularly suitable for use as VLSI library cells. All of the designs can use a supply voltage as low as 3V. One of the amplifier designs dissipates only 50µW with a unity gain frequency of 1.5 MHz. A second set of amplifiers run on a supply voltage slightly above 1V. The amplifiers combine a low power consumption with a gain of 120 dB. In addition, the design of three fully differential operational amplifiers is addressed.
Design of Low-Voltage, Low-Power CMOS Operational Amplifier Cells is intended for professional designers of analog circuits. It is also suitable for use as a text book for an advanced course in CMOS operational amplifier design.

5 out of 5 stars VERY PRACTICAL, GET TO THE SUBJECT VERY FAST.......2004-09-09

I had the 5th edition in college and bought the 7th edition for work and it helped me a lot in Transistors circuits design. It is easy to read and it doesn't give you too much theory that is sometimes confusing. Lots of example and even how to interpret Datasheets.

A must have in you library.

      5 out of 5 stars very good.........2003-01-31

as the previous reviewer notes.. there are some design pitfalls (like the equations in the front cover).... but these flaws do not effect study at all

      very thorough treatment

as for floyd.. i have his Electronics Fundamentals: cccts, devices and appli. book.. and it isn't thorough.. i.e, for transistors biasing.. it only covers Voltage DIvider bias.. and only on the surface...

wat about TSEB, Basebias, the feeback biases.. etc.????

2 out of 5 stars Needs a big internal facelift.......2002-12-22

The authors' Preface clearly states that "over the years, we have learned that improved readability can be attained through general appearance of the text."

Well what if I tell these authors that their publisher, Prentice Hall, still hasn't achieved their stated and important goal even after 8 editions of this textbook.

They begin by poorly printing all the text's equations in the text jacket cover using horizontal format which is very difficult to read and locate a given equation. They should take a good look at a competing textbook by Floyd.

Floyd does indeed achieve what these two authors intended goal: of making the appearance help the reader want to read the text but have yet to actually achieve it. Floyd also has more technical topics which Boylestad et al clearly have left out in their textbook.

Boylestad is finally being dropped at my college after being criticized for some of the things I just mentioned above. Floyd is now being used.

Students like Floyd's easy format and other easy to follow features.

1 out of 5 stars Simplistic and Error Prone..........2002-06-29

This book has to be the worst book on electronics ever. I had to use this book for my second course in electronics and it was just too simplistic and not in-depth enough. The examples are very simplistic and the worst part of the book is the problems. The problems are basically identical in difficulty to the examples with the "numbers" changed around. One can not even read the book and solve all the problems by simply flipping back to the examples and copying them. And I haven't even mentioned the ton of errors in the book. Every other formula is wrong and the notion is very poor and ambigous. If you are getting this book to help you in a course, good luck... You better hope your prof. gives excellent lectures and take good notes.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful in Analyzing my Semiconductor Biasing.......2001-03-23

I used this book during my junior in college and was so helpful in my analysis about transistors, how to bias them and the authors explanation about the Small Signal Analysis in AC Amplification. This book is one of the best books books I read about design analysis and design simplification

4 out of 5 stars Good book considering the material being covered.......2003-01-13

I find circuit analysis very boring.

But using a decent book makes the task of learning the material that much easier.

The book is quite clear and does a good job of explaining all concepts. I did however have trouble with the flow of the chapters - the examples we're jutted into the middle of the reading space which annoyed me when trying to read about something fully before delving into the examples.

I also found the problems in the back were somewhat harder than examples given in chapters... but its still a worthwhile book.

2 out of 5 stars Not that good.......2003-01-04

Honestly, this book covers all the topics, but doesn't explain techniques on problem solving some of the circuits. The examples are not that well, and the author leaves our many steps in the worked out problems.

Buy this book if ur not in an electrical course, and just want to read the theory behind it. But not if you want to learn to work our problems on top of the theory.

There are books out there that do well in both aspects that I have discussed.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and Concise.......2002-11-17

This book takes alot of very hard topics to get your mind around and makes them very easy to understand. The book is good to know cover to cover and all the information in it can be used anywhere from the feild of computer's to electrical distribution. It's a great book to give you a solid basic understanding of electricity and how it's used.

      Book Description

Operational Amplifiers - Theory and Design is the first book to present a systematic circuit design of operational amplifiers. Containing state-of-the-art material as well as the essentials, the book is written to appeal to both the experienced practitioner and the less initiated circuit designer. It is shown that the topology of all operational amplifiers can be divided into nine main overall configurations. These configurations range from one gain stage up to four or more gain stages. Many famous designs are evaluated in depth.
High-frequency compensation techniques are presented for all nine configurations. Special emphasis is placed on low-power low-voltage architectures with rail-to-rail input and output ranges.
Operational Amplifiers - Theory and Design also develops on the theme of the design of fully differential operational amplifiers and operational floating amplifiers. In addition, the characterization of operational amplifiers by macromodels and error matrices is presented, together with measurement techniques for their parameters.
Carefully structured and enriched by numerous figures, problems and simulation exercises the book is ideal for the purposes of self-study and self-evaluation.

It is a very good book that gives detailed explainations for designing an opamp.

      4 out of 5 stars Need improvement........2002-05-02

This is a good book to have if you are an opamp designer.
But, I expect the author can do a lot better job than this with this high price.
It skips lots of discussions, I feel like that he just wanted to finish write a book without too much attention.
I hope he can prepare a second edition with more detailed stuff.
For example, I wanted a details of nested miller compensation, but I could not understand it yet from this book.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book on operational amplifiers!.......2001-05-11

Dr. Johan H. Huijsing is the most famous expert on operational amplifiers. I had been waiting for quite long time since I knew he was going to publish this great book on OPAM last year.

I believe I am one of first several lucky guys who could read this masterpiece first. When I went to IEEE ISSCC 2001 conference at San Francisco in February 2001, I found Kluwer had .... I grabbed a book without any hesitation, and after I gave my credit card information to a Kluwer representative, all books were gone. It's so hot!

Dr. Huijsing has written several books on OPAM, and I think this book is the most comprehensive one. It addresses definitions of OPAMs, macromodels, applications, input and output stages, fully differential OPAMs and operational floating amplifiers, and shows some design examples. It presents nine design topologies to readers so you can pick up OPAM design very quickly and efficiently through different configurations. Dr. Huijsing also spends lots of efforts addressing low-power lower-voltage design techniques. Though CMOS technology is mainstream today, biploar and BiCMOS technologies are well elaborated in the book, and Dr. Huijsing makes very good comparisons among them, which could be particularly helpful to RF engineers.

Of course, one book cannot cover everything. I suggest you read some other good books from Dr. Huijsing, Dr. Razavi and Dr. David Johns etc. as well while you enjoying this wonderful book. ....
