Good reference, poor for beginners.......2000-03-29
But for beginners, this is not a very good book. Although hardware design is somewhat difficult to explain, the book does not analyze subjects in detail or how circuits work. When it does try to explain topics, it does not do so clearly and provides few examples. Unless you have outside help (such as a teacher, professor, teaching assistant, etc.), I would definitely recommend finding another book to learn about hardware design because you will struggle while trying to figure out how things work (if you are a novice).
If you want something detailed, this book ain't it.......1999-05-25

Not a good book for ATE.......2003-10-20
Certainly not a good text book for students nor it
is a good book for ATE engineers. However, if you are looking
for some quick reference, this book is a good place to start
because it contains brief summaries of other people's work.

Fundamentals of Modern VLSI Devices
Yuan Taur , and Tak H. Ning Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521559596 |
Book Description
This book examines in detail the basic properties and design, including chip integration, of CMOS and bipolar VLSI devices and discusses the various factors that affect their performance. The authors begin with a thorough review of the relevant aspects of semiconductor physics, and proceed to a description of the design of CMOS and bipolar devices. The optimization of these devices for VLSI applications is also covered. The authors highlight the intricate interdependencies and subtle tradeoffs between those device parameters, such as power consumption and packing density, that affect circuit performance and manufacturability. They also discuss in detail the scaling, and physical limits to the scaling, of CMOS and bipolar devices. The book contains many exercises, and can be used as a textbook for senior undergraduate or first-year graduate courses on microelectronics or VLSI devices. It will also be a valuable reference volume for practicing engineers involved in research and development in the electronics industry.Customer Reviews:

Frustrating, but recommended.......2003-04-10
Yes, as previous reviewers have said, this book gives you what many similarly named books don't: an advanced-level, industrial-view, practioner look at semiconductor device operation and design. It is well organized from that standpoint, which originally drew me in wholeheartedly.
My criticism is that when you really get into it -- and I have, by reading every page from start to finish -- the authors sometimes only use the math equations to explain why things happen. I guess this is okay in some science topics say, for abstract problems in QM matrix formalism when the "thing" is difficult to visualize physically, but this is a working, quasi-classical, real-world "machine"; physical explanations should almost always be possible. Writing about the concepts in addition to the math equations is important because most of us don't remember dozens of math equations day-to-day, but only the relationships often buttressed up by physical pictures. For example, on page 187 an equation (and equations are models of reality themselves containing their own limitations) is used to show (prove?) "the gate work function has a major effect on channel profile design, since, through the V_fb term, it has a strong influence on the MOSFET threshold voltage". In addition to the math symbolic relationship, this could also be said with physical underpinnings or something more physical sounding than "through the V_fb term".
People tend to solve problems either with: (1) pictures, (2) math, or (3) words, or combinations of these, so perhaps this is just a matter of which style is more 'natural' to a person. However, this pattern of occasionally only using math symbols to explain advanced concepts is done throughout the text. I think for an advanced text, deep physical understanding is sought, not just developing equations from standard theories; the theories breakdown under some conditions and only a good understanding of the advanced concepts will inform you when that might happen. Such understanding allows you to be on the lookout for the exceptions, which is important for the practicing engineer or researcher in this field.

as for floyd.. i have his Electronics Fundamentals: cccts, devices and appli. book.. and it isn't thorough.. i.e, for transistors biasing.. it only covers Voltage DIvider bias.. and only on the surface...
wat about TSEB, Basebias, the feeback biases.. etc.????
Needs a big internal facelift.......2002-12-22
Well what if I tell these authors that their publisher, Prentice Hall, still hasn't achieved their stated and important goal even after 8 editions of this textbook.
They begin by poorly printing all the text's equations in the text jacket cover using horizontal format which is very difficult to read and locate a given equation. They should take a good look at a competing textbook by Floyd.
Floyd does indeed achieve what these two authors intended goal: of making the appearance help the reader want to read the text but have yet to actually achieve it. Floyd also has more technical topics which Boylestad et al clearly have left out in their textbook.
Boylestad is finally being dropped at my college after being criticized for some of the things I just mentioned above. Floyd is now being used.
Students like Floyd's easy format and other easy to follow features.

Good book considering the material being covered.......2003-01-13
But using a decent book makes the task of learning the material that much easier.
The book is quite clear and does a good job of explaining all concepts. I did however have trouble with the flow of the chapters - the examples we're jutted into the middle of the reading space which annoyed me when trying to read about something fully before delving into the examples.
I also found the problems in the back were somewhat harder than examples given in chapters... but its still a worthwhile book.
Not that good.......2003-01-04
Buy this book if ur not in an electrical course, and just want to read the theory behind it. But not if you want to learn to work our problems on top of the theory.
There are books out there that do well in both aspects that I have discussed.

Operational Amplifiers - Theory and Design (The Kluwer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science, Volume 605) (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science)
Johan H. Huijsing Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
Accessories:
ASIN: 0792372840 |
Book Description
Operational Amplifiers - Theory and Design is the first book to present a systematic circuit design of operational amplifiers. Containing state-of-the-art material as well as the essentials, the book is written to appeal to both the experienced practitioner and the less initiated circuit designer. It is shown that the topology of all operational amplifiers can be divided into nine main overall configurations. These configurations range from one gain stage up to four or more gain stages. Many famous designs are evaluated in depth.Customer Reviews:

What a wonderful book on operational amplifiers!.......2001-05-11
I believe I am one of first several lucky guys who could read this masterpiece first. When I went to IEEE ISSCC 2001 conference at San Francisco in February 2001, I found Kluwer had .... I grabbed a book without any hesitation, and after I gave my credit card information to a Kluwer representative, all books were gone. It's so hot!
Dr. Huijsing has written several books on OPAM, and I think this book is the most comprehensive one. It addresses definitions of OPAMs, macromodels, applications, input and output stages, fully differential OPAMs and operational floating amplifiers, and shows some design examples. It presents nine design topologies to readers so you can pick up OPAM design very quickly and efficiently through different configurations. Dr. Huijsing also spends lots of efforts addressing low-power lower-voltage design techniques. Though CMOS technology is mainstream today, biploar and BiCMOS technologies are well elaborated in the book, and Dr. Huijsing makes very good comparisons among them, which could be particularly helpful to RF engineers.
Of course, one book cannot cover everything. I suggest you read some other good books from Dr. Huijsing, Dr. Razavi and Dr. David Johns etc. as well while you enjoying this wonderful book. ....
