5 out of 5 stars Within a week of finishing this book, had two interviews and offered a position!.......2007-05-20

I have gone on a few interviews and wasn't being offered any positions, which had been quite frustrating. I thought I have to be missing something and going into the interview not fully knowing what to expect. I decided to go see what would be available to help me secure a teaching job. This book has it ALL. It is an easy read with explanations and presentations of numerous topics in everyday language. This book helps you discover your strengths and weaknesses, presents cover letter and resume tips with examples, suggests role-playing an interview, recommends becoming familiar with the school district through their website prior to the interview, offers the top 21 questions most schools will ask with tips of what they are really asking and tips for answering plus 70 other frequently asked questions, conduct during the interview (dress/body language) including questions to avoid, questions to ask the principal or superintendent at the end of your interview, and your follow-up thank you letter. In addition, the appendix provides 20 pages of educational resources. This book gives you everything you need to get yourself ready for those all important interviews. After you read this book, you will feel confident, calm and best of all, well prepared. The perfect book for anyone who is becoming a new teacher, returning to teaching or pursuing the teacher profession through a nontraditional path. Good Luck!!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR TEACHERS!!!!!!!.......2006-08-13

Unbelievably useful advice and a true stress relieving guide to getting the job you want!

4 out of 5 stars Good and Practical Advice for Would-Be Teachers.......2000-05-27

Like some other reviewers, I am currently looking for a teaching position. I ordered this book and found it had very good information on where to find jobs, how to write a resume, and how to answer possible interview questions. I would say the resume part was the most useful so far, as few resume books have examples of teacher resumes. From the examples provided I was able to construct a more condensed resume from the three-page one I previously had.

However, the jury is out in so far as whether I will be able to obtain employment in the field even with this advice. The reason I did not give this book five stars is that there was not a whole lot of information for those people who are changing careers in mid-life. Most of the emphasis seemed directed at those traditional college age graduates with little or no employment experience.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have For All Teachers.......2000-02-07

I found this book to be a must have for all teachers. As a recent graduate with a teaching degree, I was nervous about finding the right teaching job for me. I used the techniques and suggestions in the book. I was offered a job from my very first teaching interview.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for those "still looking".......1999-12-11

I just got this book and have only flipped through it, but already I can tell it will be a great asset. I am a recent graduate with a teaching degree. Our last year we had several seminars and workshops on interviews and finding a job. I have notes scattered all over the place. This book puts all the same info in one place and a whole lot more. Really great interview tips. Lots of potential questions and what not to do or say during an interview. I can't wait to read this book in depth! A definite "must have" in the increasing competitiveness of the teaching job market!

3 out of 5 stars not very detailed.......2007-06-18

this book fails to offer any advice for following up after a first interview (beyond the standard thank you letter). Whether to write, call, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Obvious stuff, but not everyone gets it right.......2005-09-16

I am an Executive Search Consultant, a Headhunter, and I found this book to be a simple and useful checklist, especially for more senior hires. It is so easy to forget that the competition out there really is very high for jobs, and the more senior you are, the more you have to make sure your career management strategy is a very deliberatly executed and well thought out one. No one has time to read verbose books, so this one is light, and easy to remember and to refer to later.
I admit that it covers the basics, but if you get those right, then you have a strong foundation on which to build. The book is a good start.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Roadmap for Making a Career Change .......2005-05-06

Mr. Melancon's years of experience provide excellent insight into the world of how executive positions are filled in the private sector. He gives his readers the tools to successfully plan, develop, and execute their efforts to make a career change at the upper rungs of the coorporate ladder. His advice is both timeless and insightful while punctuated with sometimes comical real life examples of how not following it can be disasterous to ones efforts to move up to the next level. It is definitely a must read for individuals looking to make a positve change in their corporate lives.

5 out of 5 stars Straight Forward Facts on the Executive Job Search.......2005-01-29

This book is a must have for Sr. Level executives and managers who have been out of the job search market in recent years. Bob does a fantastic job putting things in perspective and providing ingenuous insight and guidance on the entire process.

5 out of 5 stars An Immediately Actionable Guide.......2003-10-15

Melancon has written a very readable and actionable guide for anyone who is in the job market or plans on advancing their career. As one who has recently been in a personal job search, The Secrets of Executive Search helped me to focus on what is important and develop an actionable plan tailored to my needs. Within weeks I saw a noticable improvement in the quality and quantity of the follow-up inquiries I was receiving.

The Secrets of Executive Search breaks down the search process into each of its component pieces from resume development to offer negotiations, offering the reader constructive help in each area while providing light anecdotal stories from Melancon's experiences as an executive recruiter. Did you know resumes should be organized differently on the Web and in databases for greater effectiveness? The book is chalked full of the small and large tips like this that would come from a recruiting professional with years of experience.

This book is required reading for anyone serious about marketing themself. It's a reference you'll go back to time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars Practical job hunt aid! .......2007-09-16

I have used this book in a couple job searchers in the past 3 years and have always found it helpful. The concise advice and easy to read layout make it a good tool for refreshing you on the job hunt. I think if you're a first time job hunter then maybe get What color is your parachute, but this book will be an excellent refresher and quick read for those of us who have done this a few times.

I especially liked the examples of thank you letters and the interviewing section was the most helpful for me!

2 out of 5 stars perhaps a good example on how to get a job you're not qualified for.......2007-06-27

I checked two books out of the library on how to search for a job, and this was definitely the poorer book. I recommend you get The Unwritten Rules of the Highly Effective Job Search: The Proven Program Used by the Worlds Leading Career Services Company instead. It is a much better book and really helped me get my job search rolling.

5 out of 5 stars Very organized, step-by-step approach to job hunting.......2005-12-31

I loved the book. I was always afraid b/c I knew I wasn't prepared and had no idea how to prepare. I was very good at collecting information on what to do, but not so good on doing it. It was very overwhelming. 10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search helped me not only be better prepared and knowledgeable, but it was done in a very organized, step-by-step manner, which I needed, to keep me from getting overwhelmed and quitting. Thanks for the book.

5 out of 5 stars Increased Confidence.......2005-12-27

In the twelve years I've been employed at my present job, everything has changed. I've gotten too comfortable and lost my edge. I have been far to complacent. I needed to update my skills, and understand the rules of the job hunt game in order to be competitive with younger candidates. This book showed me how to compete in today's challenging job market. I feel far more confident now and feel that I have a solid game plan after reading 10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Roadmap for Getting a Job.......2005-11-13

I have gained much perspective from reading this step by step book. It has reminded me of the importance of having a plan of action. Everything from reflecting on my needs, setting my goals to mapping out a job exploration plan and preparing for an interview has broadened my awareness of what is needed for a successful job search. I find myself refering to the lessons just to help friends and family get through various stages of lifes challenges! Thanks so much for the insight and the outlined process of self-development!!!

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars As bad as her name.......2005-02-01

I read this book a while ago (I was a self employed exec recruiter for fifteen years) and it still stands out as one of the silliest. The amount of information either a Manager or another headhunter will glean from this material is negligible. The pages discussing her "schedule" in which she shows us all how hard she works are so laughably self-important that you should skim them in the bookstore for humor's sake.

    1 out of 5 stars Yuk.......2002-11-07

Quite frankly, this book is more about negating the idea of the executive recruiters' three martini lunches rather than providing good job search tips.

4 out of 5 stars Good advice while getting your feet wet.......2002-03-22

In many ways this is kind of an off kilter book - Reynolds seems to want to be aiming at the executive, but in reality I think her book is applicable to just below that level, who are just starting out in higher managerial searches. Taken from that starting point, the book is a very good overview and advice book. Much of what she says is common sense, but sometimes it's nice to have it reiterated so that we don't forget it. As someone who is going to eventually be looking for new employment and to move on up, I found it in some ways reassuring to be led step by step through things. I don't believe I learned much new, there was certainly no "ah ha!" moments. But it did assure me that the path I've been looking at is correct, and what I know is valuable. She is not afraid to touch upon those areas a lot of people are uncomfortable with - such as compensation negotiation. Reading this book is like a comfortable session with a career counselor who's there to calm you down and help you through the next step. While currently job hunting has slowed a bit, it will rebound. And anything that helps us get a leg up on the competition is appreciated.

    1 out of 5 stars I'm happy I did not buy it!.......2002-01-05

After seeing an interview of Ms. Reynolds on CNN's "The Neil Cavuto Show" I was interested in learning more about her. I searched the web and found her book on the Amazon.com site, with your reviews & excerpts. After reading the excerpts, and almost falling out of my chair laughing about "The Week of a Recruiter", I pondered about the last twenty years I have spent as a HEADHUNTER. Ms. Reynolds and I must have worked on two different planets - in the same profession.
I have and still read many books about career searching, the recruiting industry, etc. There are some damn good how to do it books on the market - not this one. Who needs someone to give us a minute-by-minute account of her personal and professional life - who cares! Can you help me find a good recruiter, can you help me find a good job, can you help me find an industry that won't fall apart this or next year? If you need help, buy a book by the name of "What Color Is My Parachute", I believe that is the correct title. This book gives you clear and concise information, not some obtuse opinions.
The main, and only, objective for executive search firms is to find the best candidate for their clients, not to find people jobs who want more money, bigger titles, or easyier commutes. In our twenty year history, and the many placements that we have to our credit - the best candidates that we have found for our clients are people who are happily employed at their present positions and not even thinking about looking at other opportunities. The best way to find a job is to be the very best you can at your present position, be active in your industry associations and organizations, write articles for your industry websites, magazines, etc. Be visible. Be the best you can be and the executive search industry will find you. There I just wrote my first book!
If you do happen to find yourself out of work, call a few friends and ask for any recommendations they would share with you about executive search firms that are industry related and that they have had experience with. Best of all check industry, and specific company websites, there are a chuck full of companies looking for people. Ms. Reynolds is correct in pointing out that there are differences in the types of executive search firms. It boils down to two main differences; retained & contingency. Try to work with retained search firms that have a retainer from a specific company for a specific position, as opposed to contingency firms. This will at least assure you that they are not just collecting resumes. That is what most contingency search firms send most of their time doing.
Ms. Reynolds is correct again about being open and honest with a recruiter that you trust. But you have to be very careful with whom you trust personal information. When I ask a potential candidate about their martial status, their remuneration package, whom do they report to, etc. and the answer is "I will not divulge that information", I simply thank them and hung-up. Be firm not stupid. You could be passing up that knock on the door that only comes around once, and you will never know what you missed out on.
Ms. Reynolds' book is nice but I don't think it will get you a job. When an executive search consultant does call you, be polite, be honest, and remember it is a very small world.

    4 out of 5 stars Thorough Primer.......2001-12-14

"Be Hunted" is a very thorough primer on the various ways one can attract the attention of search consultants. For many, this book can provide a rare and useful insight into the intricacies of the search profession, as well as the candidate/recruiter relationship. But as a seasoned search consultant myself, I believe it's important that the reader understand that "getting on the search consultant's radar screen" is only one aspect of the overall job search process.

A much more comprehensive book on this topic is "The Secrets of Executive Search ... Professional Strategies for Managing Your Personal Job Search," by Robert Melancon. "Secrets" is similar to "Be Hunted" in that both were written by seasoned executive search consultants. But "Secrets" is much broader in scope and focuses on those aspects of the overall personal search job process that really make the difference between success and failure.

    Book Description

WANT TO BE A HEAD ABOVE THE REST?
    THIS BOOK SHOWS YOU HOW!

Headhunters Revealed! Career Secrets for Choosing and Using Professional Recruiters, by Darrell W. Gurney, Certified Personnel Consultant and 14-year search industry veteran, de-mystifies the world of executive search. This empowering and witty guidebook exposes the inside workings of the recruiting industry so professional job seekers can reap the most rewards from this viable avenue of career transition. Far from self-serving, it gives both the scoop and the poop on the business of executive search. Headhunters Revealed! shines a light on a dark and mysterious world to reveal tips and techniques for commanding the attention, and even "career partnership™," of professional recruiters.

In today's frenetic and ever-changing employment e-world, perhaps the recruiter remains the best long-term booster for a person's career. But, recruiters can't "place" everyone. Some estimate that only 10-15% of those utilizing search firms actually land a job that way. Though the best professionals in any field (the top 15-25%) are always more "marketable" from a recruiter's perspective, the truth is that anyone stands a better chance of being placed if they play the game right.

This book teaches the game: how to differentiate the wizards from the rogues of recruitment; how to play placement "politics;" how to design one's resume for today's computerized databases; and how to enlist the equivalent of one's own lifetime Hollywood agent -- a "career manager." Chock-full of resources, any career professional will benefit from having Headhunters Revealed!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but a very good resource nonetheless.......2003-09-30

While, as some of the previous reviews note, this book is guilty of dispensing some fairly obvious information (the most efficient headhunters have computers, for example) and the hypothetical exchanges featuring a fictitious headhunter and some fairly heavy-handed humor do little to keep you turning the page, if you evaluate this book strictly on the usable information contained, it is a very good value.

Inside information, such as how to increase the likelihood that your resume will be read and how to format your resume for cut and paste email are two items that I do not recall seeing elsewhere and are very much on point for an effective career search campaign.

If you look past the "humorous" vignettes (as Gurney actually is an effective and witty writer otherwise) and I found this to be that fairly rare commodity that delivers what it is supposed to.

5 out of 5 stars Drop kick me, D.G., through the goalposts of a great search!.......2002-12-24

Darrell Gurney is an amusing writer, who judiciously utilizes humor at a time when many of us need it the most: "Ugh! How am I ever going to find a job in this economy?" Well, if you "walk the talk" this book serves up, you're halfway there.

As a child I was told, half in jest, that the mark of an intelligent person was his or her ability to follow directions. The first step is: BUY THIS BOOK. The second is stick to the program -- this guy definitely knows what he's talking about.

Remember, you can lead a horse to water, but the hard part is getting the bathing suit on. Darrell helps you through the hard part --- what more can you ask for?

p.s. I look forward to another book by Darrell Gurney. I have no doubt that when you hit the playing field with Darrell as your coach, you'll score touchdowns you never imagined.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I had this info years ago!.......2002-11-23

As a professional resume writer, I recommend "Headhunters Revealed" often to my clients who are seeking new opportunities. Darrell explains how to find a good recruiter, nurture the relationship, and get the competive edge in your job search. Well written and packed with great information!!

1 out of 5 stars You already know everything in here.......2002-11-03

This is surely a wonderful guide for job hunters who are new to Earth. If you've enjoyed this planet for a while, you probably already know everything in here. If your career is at a level where you will actually find a headhunter to be useful, you definitely already know everything here.

    Handy tips include:

Don't pick a headhunter who doesn't own a fax or computer.
There are web sites for headhunters with their contact info.
There is this book called the Red Book (The Directory of Executive Recruiters), with a whole bunch of headhunters in it.
Tell the headhunter what kind of job you're looking for, then tell the guy to pound sand if he keeps suggesting unrelated jobs.
    Headhunters get paid by employers.(!!!)

I almost feel guilty for giving the whole book away in this review.

The "scenarios" at the beginning of each chapter with "Hedda Hunter, the Head Hunter" are just the beginning of the childish inanity.

Save your money on this and buy a decent resume book and the Red Book instead--there's absolutely nothing here.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2005-01-11

During my job search, I did all the common job search strategies, like posting my resume on job search boards, submitting my resume in response to the classified ads in the newspaper and asking your parents for a job within the company. Times have changed and you need to adapt to the changing job market.

I would highly recommend "10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search" to anyone searching for a job. This book is easy reading and outlines proven strategies to successfully land a job in any job market you are up against.

This book is a must have and will be beneficial in your job search. As a testimony, this book has been proven to be very resourceful and beneficial in landing my current job.

    Thank you Todd.

5 out of 5 stars Great book... now for one better!.......2004-04-03

Greetings, I am the author of "10 Insider Secrets to Job Hunting Success." I want to thank each and every one of you who purchased my original, self-published book. Because of your support, the book has remained in the top 1% of Amazon's sales for the last two years.

My reason for posting this review is to inform you that as a result of your support, one of the top publishers in the career category, Career Press, has just brought out a new, updated and completely revised version of my original book. The new book is called "10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search: Everything You Need to Get the Job You Want in 24 Hours - Or Less!"

This new book has all of the great information of the original book, plus I have added even more content and insider secrets to make the new book, in my humble opinion, the best job-hunting book ever written. If you liked the original book, you will love the new book "10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search."

Again, I would like to thank you for your support as without readers like you this new book could not have happened. Please check out the new book "10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search" now available on Amazon.com. Best wishes for much success! I know you will succeed!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Roadmap.......2004-02-17

I found this book to be a tremendous roadmap to finding my ideal job. This is the first job-hunting book I have seen that gives you the total package from getting motivated to writing resumes to answering the toughest interview questions.

Granted some of the information is basic, however I found that I wasn't doing some of the basic things this book suggested. I think this book far surpassed Parachute and some of the others I have read. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a new job.

2 out of 5 stars There are better books on the subject out there..........2004-02-17

This book is a very quick read, just a couple of hours. It is mostly motivational with little of substance. Most of the book is simple common sense. His top **Insider** places to find job opportunities are the newspaper and Internet job sites. Wow, hadn't thought of those.

Skip this one and find something better.

3 out of 5 stars falls short of expectations.......2003-06-24

this book is great as a motivational tool that can be read in a matter of hours but that's about as far as its success will take you. If you truly want to feel prepared for an interview and only want to spend money on one book I wouldn't recomend this one. Instead take a little more time and read The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Perfect Interview, so-so title when it comes to ego but much more informative for your unemployed buck.

5 out of 5 stars No substitute for hard work.......1999-08-20

If you're casual about your career and personal fulfillment, this book is probably too much work for you. But when you are truly ready, this book is the most practical and thought-provoking exercise I've seen. Whether it be a promotion or a complete career change, this book takes nothing for granted. After the exercises which help you understand your own professional desires, it provides you the steps and resources to conduct an effective search. It teaches you how to organize a resume, get interviews, how to prepare for them, maximize them, get offers, negotiate them....and I'm brushing over details such as lessons on researching companies, using a job search library, networking.

5 out of 5 stars It may double your salary as it helped me do........1999-07-02

I got a job for $24,000. Then I read the book. I quit the job and re-applied for it the correct way, as directed by this book. I got $32,000 from the very same company. Now, six months later I earn $38,000 with a written promise of $46,000 for this year. If this doesn't show that this book is good, then I don't know what will.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, no nonsense book.......1998-09-21

I found the book by Kate Wendleton of the "5 O'Clock Club" to have excellent recommendations for exploring my own interests, abilities, and talents and matching those with needs in the market place. A very down to earth, no nonsense book. Best $ I ever spent.
