Book Description
Competition for the best teaching jobs is becoming more intense. Since publication of the first edition, when it was mainly the most desirable schools that were deluged by applications, the economic climate has made the teacher market more competitive across the board, and is changing hiring practices.
Now extensively revised, this book maintains its place as the most up-to-date book available on job hunting for teachers. The authors cover changes in the educational marketplace; the new mandates about standardized testing and public reporting of student achievement–and what they mean for applicants; how new certification standards and schools’ requirements affect career changers; the growing acceptance of on-line applications and electronic portfolios; and provide additional advice for teachers applying to change schools or districts.
This is also the only guide written by school administrators. Offering the insights and experience of two authors who do the hiring, it details a step-by-step program for taking charge of your teaching career.
How to Get the Teaching Job You Want enables you to:
* Match your unique talents to the needs of a particular school
* Craft effective cover letters and resumes, using models that address the specific needs of college graduates, teachers changing schools, returning teachers and career changers
* Make effective on-line applications
* Leverage your achievements as an experienced teacher–or, for graduates or career changers, student teaching, substitute teaching, volunteer work or content knowledge–into a job offer
* Locate jobs on-line and discover valuable information about schools, including test results, educational philosophy and names of key administrators
* Design a portfolio in book or electronic format to showcase your abilities
* Practice interview skills using 100 questions taken from real job interviews
* Apply proven strategies for a variety of interview formats, including high stress interviews and performance interviews
* Address controversial questions during interviews
This book covers procedures for applying to elementary, middle and high schools; public, independent, and parochial schools; as well as international and boarding schools. Anecdotes recounting the experiences of real candidates looking for jobs illustrate key points. Access to the authors’ web site ensures that you will stay current in a changing job market.
This is a vital book for teachers and aspiring teachers who want to achieve their career goals. It will also be invaluable for guidance counselors, psychologists, librarians and other school professionals.

Very Helpful.......2007-08-10
I bought this book and "Teacher Interviews" at the same time. I thought they were both good. Each book provided me with information and helped me to refine my cover letters and resumes. After I bought these two books, I was called for an interview from the first school district I applied to. I am now in the third round of interviews for that district. Especially helpful in this book was the four most common errors of cover letters. I have started a database of "scripts" to insert into my cover letters or resume based on the needs of the school district to which I am applying which matches my accomplishments with their needs. I also liked the organization ideas that "How to Get the Teaching Job You Want" recommended.
Excellent resourse.......2006-04-24
When I first began my search for a permanent teaching job, I picked up this book. I found it extremely helpful in constructing a teaching resume. The trouble with the standard resume format is that the rules do not apply to the teaching profession. After following their guidelines for my resume, I was granted an interview with the school I now teach at. This book then prepared me for the barrage of interviews that followed and I, thankfully, knew what to expect. This book was definitely an asset. What better testimonial than someone who has secured a teaching job by using it?
Interview Info........2005-05-13
This book is helpful if you need to know how to organize your job search and keep track of documents. It contains a list of interview questions (but that is available on the internet). Since the book is written by administrators it would be helpful if they would give an idea as to the answers administrators want to hear, unfortuneatley the book falls short in this area.
The other area the book could improve on is demonstration lessons, what administrators are looking for. I am sure this varies from school to school but it would still be helpful to hear more about the demonstration lesson phase of the interview process.
A practical resource to finding job openings.......2004-03-04
Now in its newly and extensively revised second edition, How To Get The Teaching Job You Want by Robert Feirsen (Deputy Superintendent, Manhasset, New York) and Seth Weitzman Principal, Hommocks Middle School, Mamaroneck Union Free School District, New York), is a straightforward, "user friendly" career guide for graduates newly entering the education field, as well as classroom teachers who are changing school or district job assignments. A practical resource to finding job openings; crafting a polished cover letter and resume; performing well in the job interview; and so much more, How To Get The Teaching Job You Want is an absolute "must-have" for anyone seriously pursuing teaching-related employment in this modern era of constant school related job market shifts.

Book Description
This book will bring clarity, simplicity and a sense of purpose to high achievers. While many people are high achievers, and some people are quite contented, it is very rare indeed to find a person who is both at the same time.
Full of fun-to-read and insightful stories, it helps answer questions plaguing many people today. How can I avoid having an abundance of work and a shortage of joy? How can I spend more time on activities that nurture my soul? How can I be a high achiever, make it to the top of my profession, and still be contented?
It encourages you to design your own path in life, and in the process, realize that having it all is as much about a balanced life as it is about a balance sheet.
Customer Reviews:
Thought Provoking, Inspiring.......2002-07-11
Rush, rush, rush. Push, push, push. Gotta achieve. Gotta make it! Life is complicated, but that's the fun. Go go go!
So is this what achievement is all about? Not really, say these authors. There's a system for success, and it's simple. In fact, simplicity in life is part of the magic. But it all starts inside. As the book explains, "what's in the well comes up in the bucket."
This is an interesting book because it's written by three authors-three people who have "been there, done that, and taught others." But the book is written in the singular. The authors realized that their ideas were bouncing all over the place, so they engaged a writer to "harmonize them into one voice." Clever idea, but a little unnerving at times, knowing that there are three people behind the message.
Readers will begin the journey through this book by Defining Success. Chapter 2 talks about Creating Desired Results, with the obligatory four-quadrant model. The dimensions of this one are Failure and Success, Frustration and Fulfillment. The Impact of Thoughts, Words, and Actions is explored in the third chapter. Values are addressed in a chapter entitled "Reflecting on Your Belief System" before an advisory chapter on getting clutter out of your life. The balance of the book focuses on creating an environment for success. It's a "typical" self-help book, but well put together.
Extra features include the inspirational quotes you might expect, sprinkled through the pages. A 19-question assessment at the back of the book serves as a summary, but could also be taken before reading the book as a sort of benchmark. The Points to Ponder at the end of each chapter add value to this book, moving the reader from absorption of good advice to a pensive and self-reflection mode to stimulate progress.
Are you living the life you want?.......2001-06-26
The Contented Achiever is an excellent book that helps us on our journey as to whether we are living the life we truly want! In the back of the book, there is a Self Assessment entitled "Are You a Contented Achiever?" My score told me that this book would absolutely be read next!
The lessons learned about being centered and living in the "now" have greatly impacted my life. The chapter on "Clutter" has created even more satisfaction and peace in my daily life. I ask myself the following question: Are there things that tie me to my past that prevent me from enjoying the present? Try it, you'll experience a wonderful sense of letting go and enjoying life more!
great reading for organizations.......2001-06-15
This book is a quick and easy read suitable for individuals or groups. For the "puzzle of life" the book provides, in outline form, key factors to build success and a belief system to allow one to enjoy the ride. I recommend it highly and recently purchased copies for my entire organization.
Never Throw Away a Big Box Until You Have Thought It Through.......2001-06-13
I enjoyed this book so much that I got several copies to give away to friends. It was humorous, nostalgic, thought-provoking, cathartic and inspiring.
Not since I read Co-Dependent No More have I had a more graphic awakening to my own reality. This book provided me with a plethora of labels to apply to many dysfunctional life-situations and thereby provided many clues to personal problem-solving answers.
Even though I already know I am an extremely organized individual, still, I learned many new ideas to experiment with in my constant quest for even better methods for pursuit of a productive life both physically and emotionally. No one could read this book without coming away with something new to think about.
Big Boxes can hold many miracles...don't miss Chapter 6.
The Contented Achiever Is A High Achievement!.......2001-06-11
I believe that The Contented Achiever stands out in the crowd of books on self-improvement. I found this book to be thought-provoking, positive and creative. The Contented Achiever has a large number of creative suggestions which I found to be directly applicable to my life. I get the impression that the authors' beliefs are based on a profound knowledge of their subject gathered over a life-time. There are also great, well-positioned quotes to reinforce good points made throughout the book.
My favorite subjects pertained to "Creating Desired Results" which is a very simple series of steps to use to become the person you are striving to become. I found suggestions about dealing with clutter to be very practical and a chapter about "Creating an Environment for Success" to be insightful and especially thought-provoking. I also believe that the book would be especially useful to anyone experiencing some personal, or professional frustration in his/her life.
I highly recommend The Contented Achiever to those people interested in personal, or professional improvement. The simple, straightforward style used by the authors will make the book a refreshing and enjoyable experience.

Customer Reviews:
This is a great way to improve your interviewing process.......2004-03-07
I have been conducting interviews for a small telemarketing department (under 65 reps) for quite some time and have tried 3-4 different techniques to reduce my attrition. Another sales manager told me about behavioral interviewing and that is when I went on the search for books that would walk me through the process. This book goes through a step-by-step process to get you started. This is not a complete program, though, but will get you started nicely. I have since attended a web-based training on this subject, but am glad that I had this basic training guide first. I have lowered my attrition by 5-7% and have since applied this system to a performance review I did on all my staff to pinpoint my bottom 30%. I was not surprised at all who would not have been hired if they had been subjected to the behavioral interview method, but this has given me an even plain for performance standards.
Note: This is obviously for those managers that have had no formal interview training but are expected to hire their own staff. HR specialists would find this too elementary.

Book Description
As the “Big 3-0” approaches or swiftly passes, many once confident young people find themselves awash with anxiety-provoking questions—“What am I doing with my life?” “Should I be settling down?” “Where is my career headed?” “Who am I and what to do I really want?!” These questions are the hallmark of the “quarterlife crisis,” a time when our gaze turns inward, when we evaluate our personal and career choices and wonder whether we’re on the right path or seriously lost.
Turning 30 guides readers through the often difficult but ultimately rewarding process of reassessing one’s life and figuring out what matters most. Packed with stories from the front lines, goal-setting exercises, revealing case studies, and useful, thought-provoking tips, it shows readers how to reexamine their values and explore every area of their lives, ultimately teaching them how to transform their dreams into practical ideas for achieving the life they really want.
Customer Reviews:
Practical help for transitions.......2006-02-08
As well as giving interesting information, this book provides a range of really useful exercises to help you make important decisions about your life direction. By helping you create a vision for your future, analyse your strengths and set goals, the activities laid out in the book support reflection and action in important areas of your life. They enable you to analyse what you want and where you are going as you enter your 30s - but would be equally applicable to moments of transition at other ages.
The authors manage to make the subject matter meaningful and entertaining - adding humourous elements that make the book easy to read and follow. The result is a positive and lighthearted guide to some pretty serious issues. The reader is challenged, but supported and encouraged.
Definitely a good read for anyone wanting to take a long hard positive look at their life, what they want out of life and where they are going.

A Must Have for Teachers Who Want a Job!.......2002-06-15
I bought this book knowing that the authors worked in the schools as administrators. They were in charge of hiring and firing. This would help me to know what is expected of me when looking for a job. The book is filled with important information and tips. It not only covers the basic resume and cover letter but how to make it stand out! They mention what you should wear to an interview and how to answer some difficult questions. They provide internet links to popular job links for educators. The book includes how to create a portfolio, how to sit, some frequently asked questions, and tons of interview questions.
This book is recommended on every education web site that I have been to recently. I have found this book helpful in presenting me in a good light and as a unique employee. After using this book, I just received a call for me to have my second interview. This book is a must for every teacher seeking a job today!
This book is a MUST-HAVE!!!.......2002-02-15
This book is a must-have for ALL prospective teachers, whether one is a recent college grad, teacher switching districts, or a career-changer. It is written by two renouned school administrators who give a wealth of inside tips for making onself the best possible candidate, regardless of what the situation is. I was amazed at how thorough the book is - every question and concern I had was answered in-depth in these pages. How to Get the Teaching Job You Want includes worksheets for candidates to self-reflect on their teaching philosophies, and forms to record research on each school's background. By using these forms, candidates can write an attention-grabbing cover letter and resume which will match their strengths with the school's needs. Drs. Feirson and Weitzman also provide a number of useful Web sites that will provide information on a school's economic background, student body, state test scores, etc. Best of all, they provide step-by-step procedures for how to locate information on each of these sites. Truly helpful is the "Top 100 Interview Questions" that is sure to prepare a candidate for any interview, no matter how grueling. Feirson and Weitzman explain how to create effective portfolios (even digital portfolios) and how to refer to photos as evidence during your interview. Furthermore, they include a list of questions YOU should ask interviewers to show genuine interest in the school. Lastly, Feirson and Weitzman include a glossary of educational jargon that up-to-date candidates should be familiar with. If you are seeking an educationally-related job, give this book a thorough read ASAP. If your competition reads it and you don't, you will be at a significant disadvantage.

Customer Reviews:
This time tested book delivers........2007-08-14
Many candidates mistakenly think that if they only get the interview their personality and speaking skills will seal the deal. As a result, they do not practice or put their best foot forward. The book is a great tool for the experienced executive, inside candidate or new graduate - everyone benefits from evaluating their unique fit for a postion using the structure and advice set forth by Drake. There is nothing like taping yourself answering the 10 most common questions to appreciate your opportunity to clarify your value proposition.
I have used this book personally and given it to my friends and colleagues - who have used it. I know of no one who has used this book and not been offered the job.
very good interview prep.......2001-11-01
I would highly recommend this book for job interviewing preparation. Also recommended for job interview preparation are the job interview guides published by Vault.com, including the Vault Guide to the Case Interview and the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews. Good luck!
Some real help!.......2000-07-17
The perfect interview was exactly the book I needed. It showed me how to present my personality qualitities and job experience in a way that makes a positive impact. During my recent interview (after reading the book) I felt relaxed and confident because knew what I was going to say and how to say it. And, best of all: I got the job!
Great self-learning tool!.......2000-07-17
The Perfect Interview is the interviewing book I recommend to all my outplacement clients. It clearly explains what applicants must do to make the most positive interview impact. In addition, the book provides practical exercices for developing skills to optimally respond to the interviewer's questions.
This book saves me countless hours in coaching my clients. They say that the book is easy-to-read and really helps them understand what it takes to successfully convey their skills and positive personal qualities.
Excellent Interview Preparation Guide.......2000-02-24
This book is only 200 pages and can be read in a day or two. It is well organized. The first section is how to locate that perfect job and land an interview. Drake makes suggestions for networking, employment agencies, and executive search firms, with examples of contact letters and other great materials. He then takes you into the interview prep phase. He starts with helping you look right - professional, prepared, and confident. The next sections take you through the interview process, and he goes through the 10 "standard questions" asked by interviewers. "Tell me about yourself" "What are you strengths/weaknesses" and so forth. I throughly enjoyed how he assists you in forumlating the proper responses so they are professional and you feel confident. He then assists you in follow-ups, and the much desired negotiation phase. Drake helps you to be prepared from start to finish with this book. You MUST go through his skill builders as these are key to being prepared, confident, and winning that perfect job. I strongly recommend this book to all in the job market, whether it be administrative, technical, or other. I won my first interview and got the job I had dreamed of. The others did not answer as confidently as I did, nor did they state thier answers in a professional and knowledgeable manner. I owe my new job to this book. Be prepared, be professional, and be confident. Read this book, do the skill builders on paper and go over them. This is one book that will help you land that perfect career. Good luck!

Good food for thought!!!!!!!!!!.......1998-09-04
I found this book to be very enlightening. I am the person the author writes about in the book.
I try to be helpful, help other people with their job, and am willing to put myself all out because someone else doesn't pull hi/her own wreight. The author says we women shouldn't be helping subordinates do their job. It keeps us from sharpening our own skills - therefore preventing adbvancements. Instead we should be training the person under us to do our job so we will be able to move on and a replacement is readily available. I've started following the author's advice. I am giving my assistant more responsibility. She can do clerical jobs better than I can. She likes the responsibility, and it frees me to do the more difficult tasks in my job. Now, if I can just apply this to my family........ Oh, well, you can't win them all!
Good information for any woman, but mainly the dependant one.......1998-03-06
I picked this book up because of it's catchy title and to find out where I fit in. I found a few helpful hints but this book will really help those women who really do believe they need to be taken care of and do not know how to break away. At the end of the book, I found the list of items to do with developing a stronger character helpful. Definately a book to share with women I know.
