Tired of being a slave? Quit! (For awhile at least...).......2004-09-21
Curious about taking time off from work? This book provides great advice and inspiration on doing it. It's very similar to the book Six Months Off (see my review of that one), and you'll need to make the decision between them or decide to read both. I found that Six Months Off provides more ideas on what to do during your time off, especially terrific programs that would enhance both your life and professional resumes. Time Off From Work provides better coverage of the before and after concerns. Both do a great job of providing real-life case studies of people who've done it. In fact, the author of this book even covers one of the co-authors of Six Months Off as an example. In short, if you're stuck on the how's and why's then read this book; if you're convinced you want and can manage to take a sabbatical but don't have a clear idea of how to make the most of it, then read Six Months Off instead.

Book Description
The newest edition of a classic: the definitive guide to researching and launching an international career.
From teaching English to analyzing intelligence for the federal government, the international field offers a broad spectrum of exciting job opportunities. For over twenty years, International Jobs has been the authoritative guide for researching and launching an international career. In this newly revised sixth edition, veteran career counselor Nina Segal updates Eric Kocher's classic reference, providing all the tools necessary for understanding the complex international job market and finding the right employment options. With the tried and true components of previous editions-practical résumé and interviewing advice, market analysis, and insightful "day-in-the-life" stories-as well as substantially increased Web resources, International Jobs is the essential comprehensive reference for students and established professionals alike who want a career in the global marketplace.
Customer Reviews:
Useful primer on charting a career at international organizations and multinationals.......2006-06-25
Nina Segal's update of the late Eric Kocher's work provides a helpful guide for international job-seekers. From a bewildering array of options, Segal breaks career paths down by sector (media, finance, government, international organizations, NGOs and non-profits, law firms) and provides advice on the type of experience and qualifications that can help you get a foot in the door at these complex employers.
This is not a book about finding work abroad! Nor does it try to be a comprehensive index of every employer with international operations or a foreign focus. Rather, it's a starting point for a career path with big employers such as the United Nations, the US State Department, the Associated Press, the World Bank, Citigroup, and Human Rights Watch. The book focuses on the information you'd need to find an entry-level to mid-level job at companies and organizations with strong international components to their work. This latest edition adds a host of web links facilitating further research.
Segal is a human resources consultant at the UN, and previously headed the career services office at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. She has spent years studying and guiding successful international careers. "International Jobs" is a succinct distillation of what she's learned. While it could be improved, the book really is in a field of its own, and very useful for anyone seeking a path to a cosmopolitan career and life. "International Jobs" has helped me in my career, and I regularly refer to it when asked for career advice.
Rubbish.......2006-02-10
This book is awful. As said below, see the reviews of the 5. edition if you don't believe me. As an American who has permanently immigrated abroad and has had to work through the cultural hardships and bureaucracy in Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom I can say from personal experience that this book can at best be called naive. They take the typical N. American point of view that you can get on anywhere with english, they assume that the american resume will work in every country (it won't...in the UK the format is different (CV) and in other countries like Germany you have to write in a different format and in german), they give no information about how working in any of these countries is different both culturally and in respect to the working laws, and the jobs that they do list are low level jobs that no one would ever work in for more than a year (teach english abroad, volunteer work, etc.).
If you are looking for a job abroad, first off learn the language of the country you want to work in. Then go to or call the embassy and ask them about the working laws and what you have to do to get a visa. After that start sending out local formatted CVs to companies in the country, but under any circumstances do NOT buy this book.
where are the 5th edition reader's reviews.......2005-01-21
I dont know why amazon forgot to include them here - anyway: the reader's reviews of the 5th ed. of this book speak for themself ...
Check it out yourself.
Also, it is rather interesting that Nina Segal - according to the "editorial" review - never ever worked abroad. (That sounds a little bit like Condi and George W. telling the rest of the world how to fight terrorism and introduce democracy ...)
Nice Companion Book.......2003-11-21
This book is a nice companion to the more comprehensive "International Job Finder: Where the Jobs are Worldwide." While "International Job Finder" provides everything you could want to know about where to find jobs around the globe via the Internet and in print, the value of "International Jobs" rests in the in-depth information it provides about hundreds of international employers. "International Job Finder" is a lot more candid about how to stay safe overseas these days while "International Jobs" pretty much glosses over the risks in overseas work. But between them, the two books cover just about everything you need to know for a successful international job search.

Completely Disappointed.......2006-03-18
I admit that I purchased this book mostly because it advertised a coupon for a free directory of international employers. When I called the company to order the book, I found out that the directory dates from 1994. Obviously I decided to forgoe paying the $10 to have it shipped to me. Otherwise, I have been diligently trying websites that are listed in the book and many of them no longer exist or have very little useful information for international career listings or other job search aids. This book is to be avoided.
Good compilation of URLs. NOT a bible.......2005-10-31
This is a good book indeed. However, the description is very misleading.
It is basically compilation of job search engines all over the world. Search as hard as you want, you won't find any info on visas and permits or tips and tricks how to persuade a foreign employer hire you.
You can find it in Google or A9, if you search hard enough. However, this book also gives you brief description of each site. On the downside, web is a dynamic place so many links are outdated or irrelevant.
I wonder if the people that called it a Bible and told that it includes the "dirt of finding jobs" actually read it.
Find the Perfect Job in Any Country.......2005-07-07
If you want to find an International Job, this book gives you the URLs for job sites in Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Russia, the Middle East, Latin America Canada and Mexico. This book also has a page at the end for you to order a free directory of International Employers. Each URL listing also has a brief summary of the website.
One of my friends teaches English in Russia and she loves her job. Her parents now teach in China. The possibilities are really endless for anyone who wants to travel the world.
If you have been wondering how you could live in an exotic location or just live in another country for a few years at a time to learn about the world, then this book will be very helpful. If you are looking for volunteer teaching opportunities, this book has many resources.
The resort jobs looked tempting although I still have yet to see a job listing that says: "Stay at our resort free and read books all day long." It could happen.

Good book, could be better........2006-05-16
I believe this book is a good read for anyone wanting to break into the music business. However I think that "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen offers a more insightful approach to getting started in this industry.

Customer Reviews:
a very good guide to those who don't know IR.......2007-01-03
this book is a great guide to 1- students planning to study IR and 2- IR graduates who are loking for a career in this field and 3- IR graduates who don't know what to do with their diploma !!!
Really Great for ideas.......2005-08-06
I bought this book to explore the different options i had as far as careers in IR are concerned. Granted this isnt neccessarily for people who are looking for jobs that include international travel (though a good amount of these jobs do) but only those who seek careers (most of them business or gov related) with int'l dimensions. That being said it was an excellent place to start and had a lot of good ideas. It also has a good amount of contact information about places and tips on getting the job once you've found it. I found the book to be exactly what I was looking for, a great tool for looking at all my options without being too broad.
Better Than I Expected.......2003-05-03
I expected this book to be an overview of the international affairs field, but it proved to be much more. The careers and paths available are well-written and -described, and there are a number of careers that, although not obvious, suit people with an interest in international affairs well. In addition, companies, government organizations, and NGO's that employ people in international affairs are listed along with contact information. It's a well-rounded book that is honest about both the upsides and downsides of each career.
Highly Informative.......2001-07-16
I found all the answers about the different jobs available in a career in International Relations. What's great is that I not only got descriptions of the different jobs, but I also got listings of all the companies involved. Now when I graduate with my master's, I am going straight to this book for the companies I wish to send my resume to. Great read and reference!
The best book of its kind that we've found.......1999-06-09
We stock this in our career center for our students and it is almost always one of the most requested books. This book is a good starting point for students who "want to do something international", but who are just trying to figure out what that means. The chapters introductions by "international professionals" are especially useful.
Book Description
Lots of people think about having an international career, but to most it seems impossible. This book helps turn those dreams into reality. Work Worldwide shows readers how to research, apply for, and get an international job. It includes quizzes to help define goals, culturally specific information for doing business in a foreign country, and advice for long- and short-term assignments; and it explains the basics of moving to a foreign country, such as visas, currency, and transportation.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible book.......2006-09-19
Didn't meet my needs at all. Badly written and a bit outdated.
Actually, I just gave it one star to balance out the so obviously fake reviews given in 2000. What, each reviewer has never reviewed anything else before or since writing a review for this book? Hmmm, I wonder if maybe the author or publisher had something to do with that.
Great Resource.......2003-12-31
This book really tells you what is necessary to start and have an international career! Fantastic!
Everything you ever wanted to know . . ........2002-08-18
If working in another country is in your career plans, you will find a treasure chest of valuable and important information in this book. Author Nancy Mueller is a recognized global career expert. It's obvious as you read these pages that this woman knows what she's talking about. What a resource to have for your international experience.
Some Americans who work in other countries do so by choice; others are assigned to overseas posts by their employers. This book works well for both situations, though it begins with lots of advice for people who are driving their own career choices. The introduction and the first couple of chapters are designed for people who are making this exciting decision on their own. The big question about how to find work abroad is fully explored to help you make educated decisions. Those first two chapters are Get Started---Focus and Get the Facts---Research.
Chapter 3 advises Get Connected---Network! Lots of dos and don'ts here, supplemented by an appendix listing the American Chamber of Commerce offices in other countries. Chapter 4: Get Support---Ask. Chapter 5---Prepare. See the pattern? Chapter by chapter, this book helps you get your act together for the idiosyncrasies of global work and life. You'll learn how to prepare your resume for international job-seeking, how to conduct interviews, how to follow-up, and even warnings about what kinds of mistakes to avoid.
Chapter 7 will help you navigate through the jungle of visas, work permits, and an international work contract. You'll learn about compensation, how to get ready for the move, and how to prepare for culture shock. Chapter 8, Acculturate, will give you a good lesson in etiquette, social customs, and even a set of social profiles country-by-country about some of the places you're most likely to go. Wherever you go, you'll probably come back . . . and that's not as easy as you might think. Chapter 9 will guide you through the readjustment. This is a good chapter to read during your decision-making process. Anticipating the return, is this really something you want to do?
Yes, at this point in the book, you'll still have questions. That's why you'll be delighted to see that chapter 10 starts with Frequently Asked Questions. You'll find all kinds of tips in this chapter that will deepen your understanding of the adventure that lies before you.
Extra value is provided by the appendices and index. You'll get a good reading list, internet resources, and even a list of foreign embassies in Washington, D.C.
If you're considering working abroad, read this book . . . with a highlighter handy!
Hard to Imagine a Better Resource.......2000-09-14
It's rare to find a book so thoroughly researched and so intelligently written that also offers such practical wisdom. Mueller's Work Worldwide is exceptionally informative, thorough, and useful. I doubt that I'll be looking for work abroad; I bought the book as a reference work on international relations. But, for someone contemplating a career in another country--any other country--I can't imagine a more helpful book. Check it out, see if you have a question that she hasn't anticipated. I doubt it.
Work Worldwide, WOW!.......2000-05-18
What a treasure! The author has really captured the essence of what it takes to work in a foreign country. In fact, I can't believe that anyone who has contemplated working outside the U.S. would not find the information in the book immensely valuable.
