2 out of 5 stars Cryptic.......2006-08-23

This book would be excellent for someone who is already familiar with signals but is not good for the student who is learning the topic. Very few examples and no student solutions manual makes it a hard sell. For those after theory only.

1 out of 5 stars Very Dissapointed.......2005-04-21

The information in this book is difficult enough to learn, and the way it is presented here compounds the problem.
The Information and examples are not explained thoroughly or completely (to compressed) can be very over whelming.
There are many practice problems at the end of each chapter (great) there is one problem ...there are no ANSWERS???. I was not able to find a solutions manual. I even emailed the author (I got no reply). Very difficult to know if your solving the Practice Problems correctly if you don't have any solved practice prolems let alone any answers. I did manage to pick up some of what the author was trying to say, but i had to read each chapter numerous times. The website referred to in the book has a few solved example problems for each chapter, but many are hand written and could not be interpreted. In all honesty I was using this book in conjunction with a self study coarse and did not have the benefit of an instructor.I would not reccomend using this book alone, when trying to grasp this subject.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewer's #1 comments.......2005-02-27

It's unfortunate and unfair to the authors that Amazon.com accepts reviews from individuals who do not back up their criticisms of a book with details. For example, Reviewer #1 states that "drawings/charts/etc are not proper," without providing any details as to why this is true. This individual is most likely a disgruntled student whose unjustifiable comments do not warrant being put on the Amazon.com Web site.

Too much math.. drawings/charts/etc. are not proper... very confusing...

only three colours... black, white, blue...

just bores u to death

5 out of 5 stars A Very Friendly Textbook On Signals and Systems.......2000-06-23

I know Kamen's textbook on signals and systems since theedition of INTRODUCTION TO SIGNALS AND SYSTEMS published byMacmillan-USA in 1990. It was a very clear textbook and now in this second edition of his new text on FUNDAMENTALS OF SIGNALS AND SYSTEMS :WITH MATLAB EXAMPLES , professor Kamen's writing style become much more clear than ever. There are many textbooks on signals and systems in the market but Kamen's textbook is the unique with a very special friendly approach which makes the students very confortable with the subject on signals and systems. I really recommend this text for every one who wants to get a sound proficiency on signals and systems at the undergraduate level. It is the best.

This is one of the worst books I have ever come across. DSP is not an easy subject, and this book tries to explain it with abudant words and very few examples. You can not even try on your own and check your results, because this book does not have solved roblems like most books do. It's your choice, but you will be wasting your time and Money if you buy it.

I recently took my first DSP class and it was taught by none other than Joyce Van de Vegte herself using this text. DSP has some fairly difficult concepts, but this text explains them very well.

Joyce is an excellent instructor, and I find the book is written in the exact same way that she explains them in class. Concepts are explained only as technically as necessary. This makes the text much easier to read and understand the first time around and most technical texts fail in this area.

5 out of 5 stars The secrets of DSP processors revealed.......2004-02-09

BDTI, employer of this book's authors, is the world's foremost independent authority on the analysis of DSP processor designs. This book details many of the aspects of processor design that yield a processor that performs well on DSP applications. As a colleague of mine once remarked, "This book gives away all the secrets."

The writing style of this book is brief and to the point, but complete. It uses many commercial DSP processors as examples but does not focus on any particular one in complete detail.

This book will be most useful to hardware designers of DSP processors. It is not a reference for DSP algorithm or software developers.

    Book Description

Digital Signal Processing (DSP), as the term suggests, is the processing of signals using digital computers. These signals might be anything transferred from an analog domain to a digital form (e.g., temperature and pressure sensors, voices over a telephone, images from a camera, or data transmittal though computers). As a result, understanding the whole spectrum of DSP technology can be a daunting task for electrical engineering professionals and students alike. Digital Signal Processing Fundamentals provides a comprehensive look at DSP by introducing the important mathematical processes and then providing several application-specific tutorials for practicing the techniques learned. Beginning with general theory, including Fourier Analysis, the mathematics of complex numbers, Fourier transforms, differential equations, analog and digital filters, and much more; the book then delves into Matlab and Scilab tutorials with examples on solving practical engineering problems, followed by software applications on image processing and audio processing-- complete with all the algorithms and source code. This is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand how DSP works.

4 out of 5 stars A Decent Book But Has Odd Notational Inconsistencies.......2005-05-04

This book has a great outline with all of the classic treatments of the subject; Complex numbers, Digital Filters, Fourier analysis, etc. A solid foundation is set forth in early chapters in a mixed of theory and heuristic explanation to present to a wide range of experienced reader. The key issue I have between rating this book a full 5 stars is that of notational inconsistency and the rather poor synchronization of the text with the figures. There are several places where the author is referencing a figure and the reader is left wonder if the individual generating the figures discussed the figure with the author prior to publishing the book. For example, the discussion of phasors includes a graph of a sine wave with a peak magnitude of 1. The accompanying equation mysteriously has the value 10sin(...). This seems minor at first glance yet there other examples of an apparent disconnect between text and associated figures. Some of the equations referenced appear unchecked. For example, i(t) = Re{10exp(j*w*t + phi)} = Re{10exp(j*2*pi*t)} = Re{10*exp(j*phi)} (Reviewer note: f =1 in this equation and omission of f was acceptable)?

In summary, the book is good but could have been better proof read prior to publication; in this reviewer's opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Theory, Lots of Software.......2005-02-03

Digital Signal processing has changed tremendously in recent years. The advent of ever higher performance processors have all but elminimated using analog circuits to process analog signals. Both the faster CPUs, and the advent of specialized single instruction multiple data (SIMD) instructions have made digital signal processing much easier. Combining the new instructions with specialized software (included on the enclosed CD, including MatLab and SciLab) has completely changed the nature of signal processing.

This book starts with a solid mathematical foundation before going on to more practical applications. It is not a For Dummies book, the mathematics is certainly college level.

Best for study-a-night-before-test students. A 5 stars book for those kind of students. Theories were written with very short explanations, avoiding confusing details, which give well understanding (though not deep). I consider the filter section is the best; after you read this section, you are able to know and design various kind of filter in a very short time of reading.

4 out of 5 stars A good starting for nonlinear filtering.......2000-03-17

The book works all the time with 2 images, one artificial and one natural. This lets you analyze how every filter performs on different images. I wrote down my programs for all them, that's the best way to learn digital filtering.

A bit expensive? Yes. It's worth that price.

The fifth star is for a CD or floppy with the images.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent and accessible introduction........1999-04-29

This book provides a first class introduction to nonlinear digital filters. It's designed to be useful to readers of various levels of mathematical sophistication.

The first chapter is a short, simple, but excellent summary of the problem - worth reading just on its own.

Chapter 2 is a short review of some statistics: Straightforward for those with a first course in statistics, probably incomprehensible for those without. That's okay, much of the book doesn't require it.

Chapter 3 is the meat of the book. More than 50 types of filters are described, assesssed, and compared. The authors do a good job of guiding you through this potentially bewildering array by using the same examples, numerical measures, and formats throughout. Comparing methods is an easy and fascinating process (you'll do a lot of page flipping), allowing you to "cherry-pick" by ignoring those methods that give poor results or are overly difficult to implement. The summarizing table and scattergram at the end of chapter 3 are great.

Much of the mathematics has been banished to Chapter 4, where it doesn't bog down the main body of the book. You are free to ignore it, or tackle it when you get "serious" about a method. Thus the book works on a couple of different levels.

One problem is that many of the methods are given only brief descriptions. For example, there is little description on how the weights in weighted-median filtering might be arrived at. This is an understandable limitation, and an extensive bibliography is provided at the back.

      Book Description

This book is an introduction to digital optics, presenting the basic concepts necessary to master working in the field on a professional level. It represents an attempt to unify two allied directions which have appeared at the boundary between optics and computer science, digital image processing and digital holography. It reflects the integration of computers into modern optical and imaging systems.

The book is aimed at comprehensive exposition of fundamentals of digital optics, or digital processing of optical and similar analog signals such as images, holograms, interferograms, etc. Distinctive features of the exposition are consecutive observance of the correspondence principle between analog signal transformations and their discrete representations, and emphasis on fast computational algorithms and adaptive processing methods.

A number of new contributions make the book a unique supplement to the existing literature on digital signal and image processing. Among these are a new approach to characterizing digital filters, a modified discrete representation of Fourier and Fresnel integral transforms, new efficient computational algorithms for signal convolution, spectral analysis, interpolation and generating 2-D random signals, a unified representation of fast orthogonal transform design of local adaptive linear and rank filters for image restoration, enhancement and object location. The book also discusses solutions of a broad circle of practical problems of digital optics including automated diagnosis of interference in optical signals and images, image restoration and enhancement, object location in images, and the digital synthesis of holograms.

Its most important feature is the way the author allows students with a little background in mathematics to go through all the topics presented without getting lost or discouraged. The purpose is achieved with a simple but efficient strategy: an easy to follow level is the main body of the book and a lot of examples provide the reader with all the tools necesary to grasp the basics. The higher level material (advanced mathematics) is therefore not indispensable to actually understand Image Enhancement, Image Restoration, Preparation for Automatic Vision, and a little bit of Image Compression.
