Semper Fidelis Praise for Troutman's Fantastic New Book!.......2006-02-28
Dear Amazon.com staff;
Congratulations! You outdid yourselves by having Ms. Kathryn Troutman's latest book, "Military to Federal Career Guide," in your resource library.
After serving 24 years in the Marine Corps and ten years as a Career Development Coach for the Department of Defense at Camp Pendleton, CA, home to over 40,000 Marines and Sailors of the 1st Marine Division, I am pleased to praise the name of Ms. Kathryn Troutman for creating a tool that will aid the military person in becoming a Federal employee. The book "Military to Federal Career Guide" is that tool.
Military personnel respond well to organized information and the "Military to Federal Career Guide" is just that, organized! This fantastic book helps military personnel to identify their transferable skills that they possess that will relate to their desired goals as a Federal Government employee.
Ms. Troutman realized that since military personnel use steps and sequences to accomplish their goals, that she must create the path for the military personnel to travel to the government resume and with this book, she has done just that.
I endorse this book so much because I believe that any military person that uses this book from beginning to end, following all of the steps and examples, will have a far greater chance for a job offer from the Federal government than someone that doesn't use the "Military to Federal Career Guide" book.
Semper Fidelis to the staff of Amazon.com for your professionalism.
Fred
Highly Recommended by Fred E. Coon, Chairman & CEO of recruiting and executive placement agency Stewart, Cooper & Coon, Inc........2006-01-23
What I really like about this book is the easy-to-follow layout. It is clear and I know how to find an issue area I wish to learn more about. I also feel the content is solid and the examples are as good as it gets for this difficult area to write about. Kathryn takes the mystery out of understanding the Federal process and makes it easier by laying out the issue areas clearly and providing examples for each. She also devotes an appropriate amount of time to the dreaded KSA's and how to cut them down to size and present your background well enough to make it through the maze of the Federal selection processes.
Kathryn also has excellent resources listed and her abundant research on the subject shows in the material that is presented. Like my book, it comes with a CD-ROM that has just excellent color, graphs, charts and indexing. Quite a treat to view. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in working for the Federal Government. It will make the process so much easier to understand and I believe if you follow her advice, you will have a much better chance of consideration for employment in a very crowded arena.
Complete and Easy to Use - Must Have for Military Transition.......2006-01-17
As a former Transition Assistance Program workshop facilitator and now as a direct placement recruiter, I have worked with hundreds of transitioning military service members. Not enough vets make use of their hiring advatage in federal government because the process is so involved and can be intimidating.
Troutman's latest book takes her abundant expertise in the federal hiring process and translates it in an easy to use and highly comprehensive workbook for ALL those who are leaving military service and want to explore a federal career.
This book includes basic federal resume construction, an overview of the federal hiring process, how to interpret a federal job posting, electronic versus paper applications, explainations of how to claim Veterans Prefence Points, how to utilize your past experience (no matter what it was!) and how to translate "military-speak" in to federal employment language. There is also a CD-DVD-Rom included that has numerous resume samples. This book is a great supplement to the TAP manual - all the things the TAP manual barely touches on (in regards to federal employment), this book delves in and fully explains.
Additionally, Troutman has done much of the research that normally takes job many frustrating hours searching the web. She includes a resource section which shares various agency websites, how to navigate them and how to apply to each individually.
I recommend this book to those leaving military service, both enlisted and officers alike. It is a valueable resource - a low price investment that will be of great help to military service member making the leap into federal employment. There is no other guidebook out there like this!
Don't wait until your terminal leave to get working on your federal package. The federal hiring process is not the swiftest. As a wise teacher once told me, and I now tell all my students, "Do It Now".

Customer Reviews:
A well done recent dpiction of the Track for Naval Avation.......2007-01-08
This is a well-done, picture book that takes you from the commissioning process (Academy, ROTC, OCS) to API and then through the different pipelines to the wings of gold. Seems most of the primary pictures came from Whiting, and the advanced portion is a little heavy on the Jet Syllabus- many pictures from Kingsville (written by a Jet Pilot) Overall a great picture view of the different phases of training. Makes a great gift for the family of a Naval Aviator for them to understand and see some of what takes place
Son who is in Primary now.......2006-08-30
Outstanding book that accurately depicts with excellent pictures and graphics. My son is undergoing the training now and we gave him the book for a while to assimmilate the information as well.
A MUST READ for anyone interest in or wanting to become a Naval Aviator!.......2006-08-21
This book is written by a Naval Aviator in layman's terms and provides an excellent source for information about and/or becoming a Naval Aviator. Each of the Navy "pipeline's" is discussed and illustrated with great photography.
A good synopsis of steps to becoming an active pilot.......2006-07-05
For someone who is considering trying to join the navy as a pilot, I found this book very informative. It walks the reader from basic training up to joining the fleet at sea. It is filled with great pictures and plenty of details.
Great book on Naval Aviation.......2005-12-16
Being a current flight instructor in the Naval Aviation Training Command I can atest that Jay Stout's book "tells it like it is." It is an accurate, informative and interesting tour of what a young man or woman goes through from the day they show up to begin training, through the awarding of the coveted "Wings of Gold". Clearly written, technically correct and well illustrated, Jay has authored the authoritative primer for anyone considering or interested in becoming a Naval Aviator. A must read!!

Roger's Techniques Really Work.......2004-12-30
Roger's techniques helped me get leap ahead of my competition by providing must know tools for a successful career outside the military. I've been out of the USAF for 10 years now. Founded and run a thriving Engineering Company that employs over 15 people and grosses $1.5M per year. You won't go wrong by applying Roger's techniques to your PCS to Corporate America.
Take it with a grain of salt...........2002-09-10
This book really targets those who are actually interested in jumping through the Cameron-Brooks' hoop. The title should actually be "How to Fill Out Your Application Correctly-- And Prepare For the Cameron-Brooks Interview". The author sprinkles bits of wisdom throughout but you'll have to wade through a thick swamp of fluff to find them. He provides numerous examples of how he's had to turn down highly qualified candidates, mainly through semantic and situational trickery. His information comes from only a select few corporate recruiters (which remain nameless), hardly the convincing data needed to make a strong case. Overall, this is a subjective observation through the eyes of ONE person. So, don't fret over his information and definitely go out and research more options.
Ridiculous Information.......2002-06-09
I have to admit that I was initially interested in Roger Cameron's book. As a junior military officer who transitioned to the private sector, I found an initial reading of his book to be interesting (and I thought at the time, beneficial). Having reflected upon my own successful experience, however, this book is full of mis-information and should be approached as such. The way that Roger indicates that candidates should prepare for a job interview is like preparing for an interrogation by an evil warlord. In some cases, his recommendations and examples are rather dysfunctional at best--I personally have never found myself in an interview where an HR rep "turned-up" the fan in the room to create more noise to distract me from the interview at hand. Good companies don't have time for tricks--they want to find good people--people of substance. Good companies conduct themselves professionally and conduct professional interviews--at least my experience has demonstrated this to me. Perhaps Roger is preparing his candidates for "less than good" companies--it's hard to say. At best, he's preparing them for experiences that will likely never occur. There are some good recommendations--wear a nice suit, black socks, shined shoes. Prepare yourself before a job intervew--these are good thoughts, but I'm not sure that I'd pay [money] for this--when I could find this out on the internet for free.
An excellent source of career advice for anyone.......2000-09-22
This is an excellent book loaded with great advice for any Junior Military Officer considering a career change to the business world. Roger Cameron just came out with the 3rd edition of this book which includes great new information to help military officers prepare to be competitive in corporate America. It is a very easy read and the author writes in a direct/ no-nonsense style. A very eye-opening book that will be a super tool.

Job Search.......2007-01-29
Job Search was wrote by a retired military Officer who understand transitoning formthe military to civilian job market. Dave Henederson provides worthwhile advice, examples, and smaple resumes, to incluse cover leters. Lots of tips built on experience to make a successful transition. I recommend this book as the first book for anyone transitoning fromthe military to civilian jobs. Also a great refreasher if you're alredy in the workforce and thinking about making a career change.
A Great Tool in the Transition Arsenal.......2005-11-17
This book has been very helpful during my transition from the military. It is very clearly written. The checklists, samples, and examples have come in handy, while the personal perspective of the author (her military spouse retired while she was writing the book) made this an invaluable tool. My copy is becoming very dog-earred, a true testimony to how often I have referred to it over the last few months. I'm glad I picked this one up, despite that it's a bit US Army centric, but of course flexibility is the key to air power.

Career Paths in Psychology: Where Your Degree Can Take You
ASIN: 0275985989 |
Book Description
Psychology is one of the most popular majors in college today, with the number of students enrolled in the discipline having surged some 200% in the last 10 years. In this book, dozens of outstanding practitioners and scholars explain how quickly the career opportunities for graduates with psychology degrees are growing--in talk therapy and clinical research, but also at agencies ranging from the CIA and Homeland Security to the Library of Congress and the Securities and Exchange Commission. In preparing his book, Oster contacted dozens of working psychologists and asked them what advice they would offer today's aspiring psychologists. Their responses provide a glimpse into a changing and ever-expanding field. Dozens of contributors recall their thoughts and actions as they plotted careers--or landed jobs by surprise. From one psychologist who put her research aside to become president of a university, to another who ended his work with children to become an author of psychological mystery books, the dozens of practitioners interviewed share the sometimes-humorous, often-difficult experiences and decisions they faced as they completed their college years and built successful careers. The book includes advice on making the "right" choice from among psychology careers in fields old and new, the ins and outs of graduate school, and the lessons seasoned professionals learned in their quests for meaningful careers. Web sites for more information on specialties are listed, as are suggested additional readings. The book also includes sections on making the most of undergraduate years, and on balancing the demands of career and family.

Good, But dated.......2007-02-16
Okay, this is a decent guide to military careers, as far as the Idiot Guides go. If you are new to the military, or unfamiliar with the variety of opportunities available, then I would recommend you buy and read this book before seeing a recruiter. As a retired military officer I know that the military has shanged significantly in the past few years, with job classifications being revamped and many entrance requirements being adjusted to reflect the current demand for special forces and combat related career fields. This book needs to be updated and reprinted, but remains a good resource.
If you are interested in becoming an officer, you may want to read "How to Become a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Military," by Ron Taylor.
