    Book Description

The BOSCH handbook series on different automotive technologies has become one of the most definitive sets of reference books that automotive engineers have at their disposal.

Different topics are covered in a concise but descriptive way backed up by diagrams, graphs and tables enabling the reader to comprehend the subject matter fully. The rapid pace of development in automotive electrics and electronics has had a major impact on the equipment fitted to motor vehicles. This simple fact necessitated a complete revision and amendment of this authoritative technical reference work.

This fourth edition goes into greater detail on electronics and their application in the motor vehicle. Additional sections have been added on microelectronics and sensors, as a result, the basics and components used in electronics and microelectronics are now part of this book. It also includes a review of the measured quantities, measuring principles, a presentation of the typical sensor, and finally a description of sensor-signal processing.

3 out of 5 stars Average reference book........2001-06-29

This book is huge - but a lot of the details are not practical to the average electrical engineer. How many details of junction boxes and fittings do we need ? About 20% of the details are worth having. However, the book has good technical disussions.

The sample specifications are useful as a commerical grade "sheet" specification, but not full book specification. Please note that the book says that you can write for an electronic copy of the specifications included in the book. Sad to say, the author has passed away since it was written and his firm does not provide the specifications on disk.

If you are looking for a good electrical power reference book - look to Bob Hickey's Electrical Engineers Portable Handbook.

1 out of 5 stars This Book Needs an Update........2004-08-19

I was disappointed with this book because it presents the state of the art from about 1982. We are using computer programs to draw schematics now, but this book concentrates mostly on how to use pencils and templates. No mention is even made of OrCAD. The chapter on PCB design instructs us to draw circuit board traces on paper with pencil. The pictures are from companies who are out of business or in other lines of work now (Bishop Graphics, Prime-Computervision). Don't spend much on this book, even though books on this subject are hard to find lately.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for creating drawings........1999-07-16

I am an electrical engineer and PE, designing control systems. Although, I have not read this book cover to cover, it is setting on my desk and I use it frequently as a reference. It is an excellent source for creating electrical drawings, whether you are fluent in schematic generation, or just getting started. It contains information at all levels of understanding. I borrowed it from a CAD designer I work with, and it appears to be written for CAD designers. I have looked for a reference book of this nature- they are very hard to find. The reason I am writing this review is I came to amazon.com to buy it- a definite necessity for my professional library!

5 out of 5 stars What engineering is really all about.......2002-09-29

This book is what engineering is really all about- actually designing machinery and mechanical components to fill a need. I know that is why I got into the game several decades ago. Yet with all the management, scheduling, quoting, and clerical chores that are piled on engineers and engineering departments these days, it is easy to lose sight of why you chose this career in the first place. In fact, that's the only thanks you ever get in a largely thankless profession- the joy of occationally getting to design something that works.

This book is a rarity, it works as both an introductory text, as a design text, and as a life long reference book. I've taken mine along on many an assignment long after I had discarded lesser texts and references to save weight.

You get the fundamentals of how to produce a useful, working, engineering drawing that the shop can actually use to produce a part (you would be amazed at how many CAD "experts" cannot do this.) Then you get detailed information on industrial processes and materials (casting, forging, cold heading, powder metallurgy, extruding, roll forming, electroforming, welding, plastic injection, etc.) Plus you get a good intro to standard design components like all types of fasteners, bearing, seals, couplings, clutches, speed reducers, etc.) Then, you also get excellent basics in speciality areas like sheet metal development, piping, jig and fixture design, fluid power, and structural drafting. The sections on beam equations, trusses, and strength of materials are quite clearly written and requires only a working knowlege of trig. You top it off with an appendix that covers everything from conversions and fastener specs to fit types and geometric tolerancing.

Whenever I get disgusted and start to question why I am still doing this after so many others have gotten out, I pick up this text and flip through it. It reminds me that America used to be known as the land of engineers- real engineers.

5 out of 5 stars This Should Be the First Book in Your Engineering Library.......2000-08-25

Having started in engineering as a draftsman more than 40 years ago, I have seen them all ... and in my humble opinion this is the best book of its kind ever written. The authors, Jensen and Helsel, have bypassed most of the fluff, like how to sharpen your pencil, and go directly to the heart of the matter. They have packed more pertinent, practical how-to information and technical reference data in this book than you will find in any other five books of its size. The book is easy to read, and to find specifically what you need. Proper and in-depth coverage is given to the very latest in drafting standards in both metric and inch systems; including limits and fits, geometric tolerancing, shop practices, and also standard parts.

I started using this first edition of this book more than 20 years ago, and have found no other to compare with it, or any of the succeeding editions. If I had only one book to take with me to the job, it would be this one.

The interface of the Version 5 is really so similar to the Ver 4.1. So user of version 4.0 or above should find no trouble using the latest version 5.

4 out of 5 stars Good Learning Tool!.......2006-11-06

This is definitely a very good tool to learn about circuitry and such. I have to admit i only bought it because i was forced to for a class. And i did find it very pricey, seeing as we only used it for like 4 weeks! Nevertheless, it is still a good product. Definitely recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Useful yet buggy..........2006-02-19

Fairly useful program for building logic circuits and getting a visual of timing aspects, but program seems too buggy to totally recommend. I only bought it because it was required for a class.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent digital simulation software for Windows.......2005-10-05

If you have access to a Windows machine (Windows 2000/XP/NT 4.0) this is excellent software to learn digital concepts and simulate digital circuits. It's also a pretty decent schematic editor for simple circuits although I'd recommend DesignWorks Lite/Pro from Capilano Computing (capilano.com) as a better editor. LogicWorks software was originally developed on and for the Macintosh OS but version 5.0 doesn't support the Macintosh. For that there is LogicWorks 4.5 available directly from Capilano Computing ([...]) which supports MacOS 9 and X but doesn't include VHDL support.

    5 out of 5 stars A significant improvement in a good system - - - .......2004-09-19

I have used LogicWorks4 in a computer design class with fair results - (very good for small jobs - starts to get shaky with a thousand gates or so).

So far in my testing, LogicWorks5 has improved on most of the features I've tried. I think it also offers an excellent way to get started in VHDL (jury still out until I try it in a class). A bit flaky still with SP1 in a few areas.

    Anyway - highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book Available for PSpice.......2006-10-25

During my undergraduate school, I used this book extensively. It gave me a solid advantage over other students. Other students would still be struggling, after a week of a lab, to do its related simulations, while I used to finish my work on the same day we had the lab. If you want to learn how to use PSpice, this is the book. Its style to teach by example and all the examples are on the CD along with a student version of the PSpice which is good enough for learning purposes.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-10-27

The item was sent very quickly. Excellent condition. Kudos to all who were involved.

4 out of 5 stars Schematic Capture with Cadence PSpice.......2005-10-14

Marc Herniter writes good clear PSpice books. I have three of his PSpice books (including this one).
The book is written in a clear straight forward manner. The program itself is not friendly and easy to use. Possibly, it appears unfriendly because it is complex, powerful and with many good features. The author describes and explains the complex concepts in a clear manner with good examples.
For users who are familiar with previous versions of PSpice that used Schematic to enter a circuit and start an analysis, the book provides direction on how to switch over and employ Capture.
The only reason for only 4 stars is that some of the graphics are poor quality. It is not uncommon to find black text on dark grey background which is difficul to read. Color graphics would be nice, but it may be too costly.
Anyone starting with Capture and PSpice will benefit from this book. It certainly is better than the documents provided by the program originator.

    1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2007-08-17

    This book is absolute garbage!
The whole book is a tutorial with a lot of example problems for the user to solve. That's great!! The problem is when they LEAVE OUT very important measurements for you to complete the examples. So I've spent hours and hours working on one and now I can't finish it because they've FAILED to inlcude some very key data. Good job Thomson Learning!! You've successfully pushed yet another incomplete book out the door without so much as a decent proof read. Unbelieveable!!

1 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought it would be.......2007-04-05

I decided to purchase this book largely based on the positive reviews that I saw on Amazon. The ugly and generic cover kind of turned me off but everybody said it was great so I went ahead bought it.

    Boy was I disappointed.

The fact that they obviously just slapped on "Inventor 10" to their Inventor 9(or lower) book stands out a lot. Many of the tool bars have changed/rearranged so it takes some looking around to go through the tutorials. Yes it may only cost me a few minutes for each time I have to do this, but if I'm shelling out ~$100 for a book it would have been nicer to know they put more of an effort in updating it other than finding and replacing "Inventor 9" with "Inventor 10".

They don't even go over Inventor Studio, which is a very large addition and selling point of Inventor 10+!

Other then those obvious translation issues it is a very solid book, and if I was using this for the correct version it was originally written for I would have been very very happy.

In the end this may have been a great book for whatever original version it was written for, but just slapping on "Inventor 10" and sticking a $100 price tag on the book isn't my idea of a great book.

Do yourself a favor, buy a book catered toward this specific version or newer. Or just buy the Inventor 9 book @ 50% of what this costs, it's the same stuff! > <

5 out of 5 stars Teaching - Using Autodesk Inventor.......2001-08-02

I plan to use "Autodesk Inventor" as an instructional textbook in my Advanced CAD Class during the 2001-2002 school year. I have been exploring the material in this text during my free time (during this summer of 2001). I feel that the upper level high school students using this text will not only be able to construct the 3-D models detailed in this book but will enjoy learning the use of the Autodesk Inventor software.

I wish to thank Mr. Ron K. C. Cheng for writing this book. My hat is off to you. Although the "Food Grinder" took a good deal of time and patience on my part (to work through), it was a great exercise.

I highly recommend this book for any educator who wishes to instruct 3-D modeling with the use of AutoDesk Inventor.

5 out of 5 stars Good value. One book for both R3 and R4.......2001-03-15

As a student in industrial design I found that this book do has a good balance on both concepts and tutorials, especially on all those parametric solid modeling, assembly modeling, and sheet metal modeling. The free-of-charge online companion is the best I ever found. It's free and it's user friendly. The Pack and Go, epicyclic mechanism and adaptive assembly tutorials are especially interesting and useful. They help me solve a lot of real world problems when I am doing my part time job. I recommend to save your money and use this book for both R3 and R4.

5 out of 5 stars Found ZIP "Pack and Go" Wizard in the online companion.......2001-03-09

The specific question on ZIP can be found in Chapter 1 of the online companion. It is the Pack and Go Wizard that zips the entire directory into a compressed file. Besides, the R4 new features and tutorials on the new features are also found in the online companion, which has six chapters corresponding to the chapters in the book.

    Book Description

The first book of a three-book series, AutoCAD 2004: A Building Approach, Book 1 covers material from opening the AutoCAD program for the very first time to being able to efficiently use the basic commands to set up, draw, and print drawings. Using a modularized approach that groups related commands and operations together, this book focuses on teaching the most efficient method of operation that enables the user to quickly become a productive CAD operator. Equipping readers with the practical skills required to succeed in this field, the book also contains real-world application exercises at each module's conclusion and a final project at the book's end that a new CAD operator might be required to do in an actual employment situation. Examining different techniques for putting lines on a drawing and drawing specific shapes such as rectangles, circles, arcs, and ellipses, the book also explores the different types of engineering units and their use in engineering. For people with a career or desire to pursue a career in engineering or computers.

    5 out of 5 stars Another Success.......2003-10-18

I had purchesed the 2002 seris for work and found the books to be the best step-by-step text on AutoCAD had had found to date. When my company updated to 2004, I checked to see if Mr. Metz had writen a new seris for latest version. I was elated when I saw that he had. This new seris is as easy to use as the original.

These books are the most user friendly I have ever used. Weather you are a novice or seasoned AutoCAD user, these books should be on your shelf at work or home.

If there could be a higher rating then 5 stars, this AutoCAD seris would get my vote.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to learn AutoCAD.......2003-10-02

I've used the previous edition and am now using the new edition of these books for my high school technology classes and really like them. In place of lectures, I let the students work through the books at their own pace. These books are so well written with easy to follow instructions that my students learn the AutoCAD program very quickly. The best part is that after the students have completed the exercises in the books, I can assign them any drawing and they can do it.

I really recommend these books to any instructor who teaches an introductory course in AutoCAD or for any individual who wants to learn AutoCAD on their own.

Using AutoCAD 2000 for rendering 3-D images is a discipline unto itself, and thanks to books like AutoCAD 2000 3D F/X and Design, users can find insights into this aspect of the popular CAD application with a minimum of trial and error.

AutoCAD is an enormous program, but because this book focuses on just one aspect of it, the author is able to explore 3-D rendering and explain it with depth and clarity. In three parts, the book covers learning to work with 3-D drawings, including coordinate systems and perspective views. Part II details the creation and editing of 3-D models, and explores the relationship between geometric modeling, surface modeling, and solid modeling.

Part III is the section that everyone wants, for it discusses the rendering tools and how to render 3-D models from AutoCAD. Although this is the shortest section, it is impossible to optimize your understanding of it without mastering all the material that precedes it. The book explains setting up scenes, using bitmap 2-D textures mapped to your 3-D model, attaching materials by color or by object, and using the landscape tools.

Like any mature program, AutoCAD 2000 is capable of some beautiful and accurate 3-D rendered images, as some of the color plates in the book clearly demonstrate.

The accompanying CD-ROM contains all the original project drawings used throughout the book, as well as evaluation versions of JASC Paint Shop Pro and Mech-Q drafting utilities. This is a handy volume for intermediate and advanced users looking to improve the quality of their 3-D rendered images. --Mike Caputo

1 out of 5 stars just a rewrite of the manual.......2003-08-22

This is probably the worst technical book I have ever read. The author simply covers the commands of the software without any insight. There is a total lack of fluidity between the sections--each one seems to have been written by a different individual who doesn't care what was said before or will be covered later. Lots of boring repetition without purpose and very dry humor. If you still would like to buy one, BUY MINE.

5 out of 5 stars THE best book on AutoCAD 3D.......2000-05-21

This is by far-and-away the best book I have read on the subject of AutoCAD 3D. The book was a joy to work through from beginning to end, covering so many aspects (many of which other authors neglect to cover), all of which add up to produce a first class book and subsequently a well rounded course - everything you need to confidently tackle 3D CAD.

    BUY IT.
