Book Description
The CMOS technology area has quickly grown, calling for a new text--and here it is, covering the analysis and design of CMOS integrated circuits that practicing engineers need to master to succeed. Filled with many examples and chapter-ending problems, the book not only describes the thought process behind each circuit topology, but also considers the rationale behind each modification. The analysis and design techniques focus on CMOS circuits but also apply to other IC technologies.
Customer Reviews:
Every designer in my company has this book.......2007-09-17
This is by far the best book for analog designer. The only thing I wish to see is to include some simulation examples such as: AC analysis, noise analysis...
Also, as the technology moves to sub-micron, long channel approximation is no longer accurate. I wonder if author can comment on how to size the transistors for fewer spice iterations.
Maybe we will see them in the 2nd edition.
Grown appreciation.......2007-06-02
The more my knowledge grew, the more I have appreciated returning to this book as a reference compared to any of the others. Razavi's explanations are lucid and directly to the point allowing me to quickly recall/re-understand concepts that I either once grasped and forgot or never really understood in the first place.
It is OK. There could be better ones.......2006-11-12
I have used this book in a graduate class. It is good and very rigorous. It has good amount of examples and plenty of end of chapter problems. It is a good treatment of the subject. However, it might be hard as introductory.
Disappoiting.......2006-03-07
The book is too theory-oriented; not suitable for engineers. I felt disappointed.
And the chapters on PLL and switched-cap. are too common-sense! No use at all for practising engineers...I don't want to recommend this book -
Great book........2006-01-29
Difficult Side
Read Sedra/Smith book before trying this one. It is really hard to follow. It's hard to differentiate between small and large signal analysis, since author uses the same notation for both. Watch out!
Good Side:
Book is on CMOS analog ICs, so it's specific.
Book is very thorough. Behzad Razavi explains the function of each resistor in a circuit. Book teaches on a high level. Author put in much effort.
Book Description
Franco's "Design with Operational Amplifiers and Analog Integrated Circuits, 3e" is intended for a design-oriented course in applications with operational amplifiers and analog ICs. It also serves as a comprehensive reference for practicing engineers.
This new edition includes enhanced pedagogy (additional problems, more in-depth coverage of negative feedback, more effective layout), updated technology (current-feedback and folded-cascode amplifiers, and low-voltage amplifiers), and increased topical coverage (current-feedback amplifiers, switching regulators and phase-locked loops).
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-06-16
Great book for reference and self study if you remember your circuit analysis and laplace transforms. Very detailed with out making ones eyes gloss over. Do wish it had a few more d examples but overall cant complain.
still an outstanding, encyclopedic treatise.......2006-03-23
Mulling through some old reviews, I noticed that I left a technical error (more of a technical glossing-over) in my review of Franco's opus. It's high time I corrected it, since it's been there for more than a year, no doubt befuddling readers who thought they knew something about analog electronics. Specifically, I had said that the designation of the input terminals as '+' and '-' really made no difference: it's more reflective of convention, sciz. (assuming something other than a difference amplifier), the significant input network is attached to '-'--with '+' grounded--if the configuration is inverting, but to '+' (with '-' grounded) if the configuration is non-inverting. That's the truth, but it isn't the whole truth. When we examine border cases--those that tax the operational limits of the device, straying outside the "passband," analogically speaking (yes, I know, that typically refers to a frequency range, but here I use it to address an input voltage difference range)--the otherwise cosmetic or mnemonic choice of '+' or '-' terminal becomes rather more manifest. Remember that the amplifier actually amplifies the input voltage difference in the microscopic sense--even though it implements a semantically notable linear operation in the macroscopic sense--relying upon the feedback network to remanufacture an appropriate input voltage difference that maintains the nominal purpose of the circuit. When things go ape and the input voltage difference is much too high or, alternatively, much too low (and that may be a tough nut to crack), the output characteristic will be dependent upon what was connected to '+' and what, to '-'.
Now, wasn't that as clear as mud? Remember, I'm constrained to use words, and words alone, as my medium of communication, and, since I have only a fraction of a thousand words, I have only a fraction of a picture!
Excellent Book.......2005-05-27
This is an excellent book on linear circuit design, the best I have read to-date. It covers feedback theory, ideal op amps, active filter design & most importantly practical op amp limitations. It also covers voltage regulators, voltage references, ADCs, DACs, op amp noise & more. What I liked most was the combination of mathematical circuit analysis & practical design. Too many books show useful circuits without bothering to explain anything about how they work. It also has plenty of exercises to tax the brain.
As good as it gets..........2005-03-17
Really a top notch book on op-amps and almost anything you'd ever do with them. Has math where it's needed and rules of thumb where it isn't. Actually is just a great analog design book altogether. Really the definative text on the subject of designing with op-amps.
Excellent Resource for Student or Practicing Engineer.......2003-02-23
This book can be an excellent resource for any Analog Integrated Circuit Design Electrical Engineering student or practicing engineer. The book can assist in the modeling of IC devices such as transistors, resistors, and capacitors. It also sensibly covers the building blocks of analog integrated circuits: gain stages, output stages, level shifters, current sources and mirrors.
The reader is expected to have a general understanding of electronics, frequency-domain analysis procedures, and understand basic Pspice operations. The book generally covers enough material for a half-year of courses at the upper-division/graduate level although the book could certainly be useful for a single class.
The material generally starts out as basic and proceeds to a complex level. There are helpful figures and diagrams on nearly every page and the organization is generally sensible and intuitive. There are many worked examples and hundreds of end-of-chapter problems. The text is supported by a website that offers downloadable design projects, additional examples, and design software. Franco has done an admiral job at presenting a complicated subject.
Here's a brief description of SOME of the topics found in each chapter:
1) Basic amplifier concepts and arrangements are explored. Also covers negative feedback, the loop gain, and basic circuit analysis.
2) Current-to-Voltage & Voltage-to-Current Converters, Current, Difference, Instrumentation, and Transducer Bridge Amplifiers.
3) Active Filters. Transfer Function, 1st order, KRC, multiple-feedback, state-variable, audio, and biquad filters.
4) Filter Approximations, switched-capacitor, universal sc filters, and cascade design.
5) Low-input bias-current Op amps, low-input-offset-voltage Op Amps, Op Amp Circuit Diagrams, and Input offset Voltage.
6) Open and Closed loop response. Transient Response, Input and Output Impedances, and effect of Finite GBP on Filters and Integrator Circuits.
7) Noise Dynamics and Properties. Sources of Noise and Low-Noise Op Amps.
8) Stability problems. Stability of CFA Circuits and in Constant-GBP Op Amp Circuits. Internal and External Frequency Compensation.
9) Schmitt Triggers, analog switches, voltage comparators, and precision rectifiers.
10) Sine, Triangular, Sawtooth, and Monolithic Wave Generators. Also Multivibrators and V-F and F-V Converters.
11) Voltage References and Regulators. Switching, linear, and monolithic switching regulators.
12) Performance Specifications, D-A and A-D Conversion Techniques. Oversampling Converters and Multiplying DAC Applications.
13) Nonlinear Amplifiers. Phase-Locked Loops, Monolithic PLLs, Analog Multipliers. Log/Antilog and Operational Transconductance Amplifiers.

Book Description
This book is entitled Analog Design Essentials because it contains all topics of importance to the analog designer which are essential to obtain sufficient insights to do a thorough job.
The book starts with elementary stages in building up operational amplifiers. The synthesis of opamps is covered in great detail, such that lowest power consumption is always guaranteed. Many examples are included, operating at low supply voltages. Chapters on noise, distortion, filters, ADC/DACs and oscillators follow. These are all based on the extensive amount of teaching that the author has carried out both at universities and companies world-wide. All chapters have been drawn up specifically for self-study. They aim, however, at different levels of understanding. All start with elementary material. Most chapters also contain advanced material, especially from Chapter 9 onwards.
A new format is used for this book. All slides are included on a CD-ROM, as PDF files, and are reproduced in the book, followed by the comments normally given by the teacher. This has the advantages that the material used for teaching is also the material used by the student, and that only one additional aspect is explained per slide. The student can thus easily monitor their progress in understanding.
It is hoped that this new format provides a better structure in both teaching and studying these essential topics in analog design.
Customer Reviews:
A great book if you use it properly.......2007-10-06
Reading this book is like taking lectures from the author. On one hand, the essentials of a subject are emphasized by the professor (I guess this is the reason for the title), which can save much of your time; on the other hand, you cannot learn a course only by attending lectures -- You still have to read textbooks.
There have been plenty of textbooks on analog design. This book is a great supplement (instead of a substitute) to those textbooks.
I like the novel format of this book. When I want to review a topic, I can browse through the slides and get the essentials quickly. It can be very helpful if you use it properly.
A Book in Slides.......2007-06-02
The author's renowned status in analog IC-related publications helped me make the purchasing decision. I was very excited by the table of contents because the topics were exactly what I was looking for.
Specific appraisals:
1) The book is laid out in a stream-of-consciousness style, which is peculiar and very different from most engineering literatures.
2) The book is filled with excellent hands-on tips and right-to-the-point technical explanations by the author.
3) Although a few equations are given without explaining what the corresponding variables represent, the resultant impact on comprehensibility of the topics is minimum thanks to appropriate illustrations.
4) In a few slides, answers are given contradictory to the formulae shown.
5) Since the book is apparently built of numerous teaching handouts that were presented at different times/locations/occasions, the notations are not entirely consistent throughout.
6) Descriptions are not 100% thorough in some areas, and yet may be favorable to seasoned designers who like exploring on their own rather than accepting/copying everything from famous experts.
7) The CD could have been better documented.
8) Arguably not the author's best work in the field of analog IC design thus far.
9) Not exactly suitable for beginners.
It would be great if the book had gone deeper into the discussion of switched-capacitor and current-mode circuits. But if it had, the title would have been something like "Advanced Analog Design" rather than the presented "Analog Design Essentials".
Wrong Name!!.......2007-05-23
The name Analog Design Essentials is wrong for this book!. It is a collection of slides (most probably from a course the author teaches)with short paragraphs which explain the slides. The selection of topics is very good but random equations are thrown in without any explanation whatsoever. You will have to revert to another book to try to understand some of the things the author is talking about. If you are an undergraduate student, DO NOT buy this book thinking it deals with the basics! Practising analog design engineers might find this book interesting. I bought this book because I have high respect for the author. I've read many papers authored by him and a previous analog design book where he was the co-author which, in my opinion is one of the best books on analog design (sadly not in print anymore!).
Fun to Read.......2007-05-11
The design philosophy is to stay above subthreshold and below velocity saturation, and hope square-law works there. Slide 0152 indicates this approach became obsolete in 2004 as the window between these conditions vanished for shorter device lengths! Nonetheless, the approach provides a lot of insight.
A drawback: references to sources, like (Hosticka, Sackinger) found on p. 82, without further information, force the reader to Google Scholar to find papers!
Reviewer Chan's comments on the CD are accurate. Some figures indeed have illegible labels, 2142 being a worst case. Attempts to copy the pdf file either from Acrobat itself or using Copy/Paste lead to a "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" menu, and the file is not transferred to disk.
One reason to take the trouble to load into Acrobat is its search feature that allows you to look for all references to "gain boost" for example. That is helpful mostly because the index, table of contents, and cross referencing of this book are really, really poor. Unfortunately, it takes a full 4 minutes to load a 600 MB Chapter from the CD into Acrobat.
Not convenient to use, and maybe a bit dated (no more than other texts), but a lot of fun. At this price - you can't go wrong!
Simply Awesome!!.......2007-04-05
This is a great book, no doubt about that. Although it has an unconventional approach for a book--slides etc.,--it manages to squeeze lot of analog in the end. And that's what that matters. The author himself is an authority on the subject and one can realize the genuine desire-- matched by his efforts--he has, to get the topics to his readers. This book is good as a supplement, a reference, an introductory text or simply revising material for an advanced material. Of course the lack of literature in some instances or detailed formulae for that matter, may leave a reader disappointed at times, but don't let turn you off for you can find those in any standard textbook.
The CD files, unlike observed by another reader, can actually be copied to your hard disk. But they take lot of space, each is the size of a CD. This is for a reason. The CD is nothing but a sort of e-book given free, and I hope someone who is reading this book understands respecting IP as such. Copying a chapter or two for personal or academic use certainly falls under fair copyright use so that shouldn't be a problem either. Of course the publishers don't want you to copy/backup entire text or distribute it. The large file-size is probably meant to prevent that. All-in-all this is a great book and a must have on any serious analog designer's table. Ask your school or company library to buy it if you can't but do try it any which way. In most cases it will be an investment well made.

A Good One!.......2000-11-04
I'm a 3rd year electrical engineering student who thoroughly enjoyed this book. It covers all aspects of Op-amps as well as the support chips. I, as well as all of my class mates, found it easy to follow as well as extremely informative. I would highly recommend it to ANY E.E. student as well as instructors.
Book Description
Operational Amplifier Speed and Accuracy Improvement proposes a new methodology for the design of analog integrated circuits. The usefulness of this methodology is demonstrated through the design of an operational amplifier. This methodology consists of the following iterative steps: description of the circuit functionality at a high level of abstraction using signal flow graphs; equivalent transformations and modifications of the graph to the form where all important parameters are controlled by dedicated feedback loops; and implementation of the structure using a library of elementary cells.
Operational Amplifier Speed and Accuracy Improvement shows how to choose structures and design circuits which improve an operational amplifier's important parameters such as speed to power ratio, open loop gain, common-mode voltage rejection ratio, and power supply rejection ratio. The same approach is used to design clamps and limiting circuits which improve the performance of the amplifier outside of its linear operating region, such as slew rate enhancement, output short circuit current limitation, and input overload recovery.

Prods Imagination.......2007-08-22
Like many Kluwer books, format is poor and editing non-existant. But unlike many Kluwer books, there is some content. Some unusual circuits are presented, jogging your imagination. However, there are also many typos and undefined symbols that make understanding the circuits a workout. Also, just where the circuits work and where they run into trouble isn't discussed much.
Definitely aimed at the practicing designer, more than the student, so much is left unsaid: pro's discussed without the con's.
Still, an interesting work.
Nice approach, good ideas.......2007-01-09
Nice approach for design. The structural methodology his really not easy but you don't need to control it to enjoy the book. I working on it! It's not so far away from intuituve approach and the texts help in that way. Covers really good circuits ideas and opens your mind for some new of your own. Great job, great reference book.

Practical Approach to Op-Amps.......2002-12-02
I'm a mechanical engineer that specializes in robotics and found this book very approachable. If you're looking for a solid "real world" book on op-amps and their applications, this is a great reference book. It contains useful examples that teach the underlying theory without being overly burdened with graduate level mathematics.
Unfair review.......2002-03-17
This is a rebuttal to Mr. Sanders review, which I found to be unfair and untrue. I have the second edition of this book which was used as the text for an undergrad course taken in 1988. I have found this text an invaluable resource. The equations are well derived and the examples provide a good foundation to op-amp circuit design. This text is a good reference for beginner and experienced engineers alike. I find it highly unlikely that the fourth edition would be a step backward from the second edition.
Great Book!.......2002-03-15
This book is well written even for a 12 year old. The math isn't too complex. I don't know if the previous reviewer has any formal electrical/electronics education; maybe that should be the place to start. I think this book does a better job than "The Art Of Electronics", in explaing how Op-Amps really work. But don't let this book be the end all to be all. Until an author writes a book that combines everything about Electronics, use as many books as possible. I have not found one book that can compare to 10 books on the same subject. Maybe the "Grey" book.
very difficult to understand. heavily equation oriented.......1998-09-25
The prose explanations are short and stilted, offering a minimun of circuit operational explanation. When the author reaches what I entrepet as writer's block, he refers the reader to an equation which is lenghty and difficult to understand. The equations often lack explanations as to how they are derived. They also lack explanations of what the new symbols in them represent. They would be much easier to understand if there was more prose explanation of how the equations were created and then how the equations were changed into simpler equations for solving. This appears to be a good reference for experienced engineers. It is not a good study text for newly learning students.

Excellent organization.......2000-04-28
I found the book to be very helpful during my undergraduate courses. As a masters student, I still refer to the book. It gives very good explanations to the basic operation of various op-amp circuits. Together with the well written explanations, the diagrams themselves are self-explanatory.
Generally a well organized and written book!

Book Description
This book offers comprehensive coverage of a wide, relevant array of operational amplifier topics.
KEY TOPICS: The book integrates theory, practical circuits, and troubleshooting concepts, keeping mathematical details to a minimum. Delving more deeply into coverage of operational amplifiers, the book guides readers through a system of pedagogical tools that both reinforces and challenges their understanding. An essential reference in electronic technology.
Book Description
Written for advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate courses in analog filter design and signal processing, Design of Analog Filters integrates theory and practice to provide a modern and practical "how-to" approach to design. A complete revision of Mac Van Valkenburg's classic work, Analog Filter Design (1982), this text builds on the presentation and style of its predecessor, updating it to meet the needs of today's engineering students. Reflecting recent developments in the field and emphasizing intuitive understanding, it provides readers with an up-to-date introduction and design guidelines and also helps them to develop a "feel" for analog circuit behavior. Design of Analog Filters moves beyond the simple treatment of active filters built with opamps to discuss the more recent design of filters based on transconductors. Topics covered include fundamental concepts; opamps; first- and second-order filters; second-order filters with arbitrary transmission zeros; filters with maximally flat magnitude, with equal ripple (Chebyshev) magnitude, and with inverse Chebyshev and Cauer response functions; frequency transformation; cascade designs; delay filters and delay equalization; sensitivity; LC ladder filters; ladder simulations by element replacement and by operational simulation; transconductance-C filters; and switched-capacitor filters. Features * Includes a wealth of examples, all of which have been tested on simulators or in actual industrial use * Employs MATLAB to minimize algebraic and other computational needs * Uses Electronics Workbench to help students simulate actual experimental behavior * Provides sample design tables and design and performance curves * Avoids sophisticated mathematics wherever possible in favor of algebraic or intuitive derivations
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as the original........2007-09-30
The book has lost a lot, since the previous version by Van Valkenburg (this edition was rewritten after his death). Although there is additional material, the book is no longer enjoyable reading. Important entries are entirely missing from the index. The paper used has a fluorescent glow! This causes eyestrain when reading the book.
Excellent.......2007-05-14
Excellent book if you like electronics and are familiar with freqeucny analysis from say a controls perspective. Having dual concentrations in controls and electronics. I found this book to be very useful. Breakdown of problems aren't really present but you'll just have to design things in stages and combine them. You'll see when you get the book. Highly informative for designing analog filters (including multi order active filters) that could be comparable to some low-mid end dsp filters.
Good Filter Book on Fundamentals.......2004-02-20
Great book on filter design with exphasis on fundamentals. If you feel that you are in a hurry to get a working filter and do not care for the theory, then this book is not for you. However, sooner or later, you may need an understanding of that theory part, then it is the time to read it. There is a solution manual of 660+ pages available from the publisher, with all problems explained and simulated in details. Yes, there are some typos/errors in text and equations, kind of annoying when in equations, since when I am learning, I have to at first trust what I am reading is correct. But if you email the author, he will send you a list of errata, which will be reflected in its next edition.
one of the best books on the subject.......2003-04-09
Not only a great book on analog filtering but also on analog electronics. It explores the op amp bandwidth limitations and how to take this into account to make accurate predictions on real filters. The fundamental theory of filter design is discussed at an introductory level, excellent starting point for more advanced readings. I stongly recommend this book for a first undergraduate course in the subject.
Strong in Fundamentals.......2002-07-16
This is a good book. It has everything you need on filter design with all the clear explanation and design examples. Strange thing is he uses dB/octave instead of dB/decade. I also feel that the people who wrote the previous comments should concentrate on the fundamentals to do design rather than relying on a computer to do the job. Who needs Matlab? ;-)
