Book Description

Millions of people have learned to draw using the methods of Dr. Betty Edwards's bestseller The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Now, much as artists progress from drawing to painting, Edwards moves from black-and-white into color. This new guide distills the enormous existing knowledge about color theory into a practical method of working with color to produce harmonious combinations.

Using techniques tested and honed in her five-day intensive color workshops, Edwards provides a basic understanding of how to see color, how to use it, and-for those involved in art, painting, or design-how to mix and combine hues. Including more than 125 color images and exercises that move from simple to challenging, this volume explains how to:

- see what is really there rather than what you "know" in your mind about colored objects
- perceive how light affects color, and how colors affect one another
- manipulate hue, value, and intensity of color and transform colors into their opposites
- balance color in still-life, landscape, figure, and portrait painting
- understand the psychology of color
- harmonize color in your surroundings

While we recognize and treasure the beautiful use of color, reproducing what we see can be a challenge. Accessibly unweaving color's complexity, this must-have primer is destined to be an instant classic.

5 out of 5 stars BETTY EDWARDS ROCKS!.......2007-09-17

Anything written by this woman is amaaaazing!!!!! Loved this book! I have to recommend the others too!!!
The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (BEST GIFT I HAVE EVER RECIEVED!) along with the workbook... and Drawing on the Artist Within.... if you have these books, there is no need for ANY OTHER on drawing instruction!!!! MUST HAVES!

5 out of 5 stars Well organized presentation. Very infromative. .......2007-09-10

The information in the book is presented in much the same way that instruction in a college class is presented - step-by-step. The progression of the material is perfect. An artist at any level could learn form this author. It's easy to see that Betty Edwards is an experienced teacher.

There are projects in the book that ground the written information in hands-on learning. The projects are fun yet by their nature improve both color mixing and perception.

I highly recommend this book! Loved it!

It's very clear and concise and an excellent resoursce.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile color course.......2007-01-16

A well thought out book. Color theory is presented accurately however reference to the visual complementary theory would be useful. This is a book where the benefit will only be properly dervived by working through the exercises. This takes time and commitment and it is not a book for the casual reader. On the way some useful color tools are developed. In summary a very unique work that is not perfect but can advance your knowledge and skills significantly.

4 out of 5 stars Now I get it..........2006-05-03

I am not an artist, at least, that is not what I've gone to school for (I am a History professor). But Betty Edwards' books, over the past couple of decades, have helped me to draw like I know what I am doing. And now I know more about color and the art of mixing acrylics.

For those of you who have taken art classes or consider yourselves to be artists, I don't know how you take the book. But for those of us who yearn to express ourselves through art but were never instructed, this book is a godsend. No one ever explained color theory to me before, at least that I could grasp, but Edwards' no nonsense way of teaching as a step-by-step process explains color theory in excruciating detail.

I tried to paint before, but failed to mix the colors the way I wanted to, or to match what I was seeing. Edwards makes sure that this never happens to you again, at least that is what I got from the book. What I found the most helpful on an emotional level were the little blurbs in the margins, which some other "reviewers" criticized. Why do these help? Because now I know that Van Gogh, Da Vinci, and others had to LEARN color theory like I have to learn it. They didn't just pick up a paintbrush and oils and voila!, they were masters. They worked at it, just like me. I don't feel so stupid about art anymore.

Edwards will make you see color structures in a better way, an artists' way. You should be able to express what you see in front of you better after reading her instructions in this book and doing the lessons. Painting used to be mysterious to me, and now I know how to achieve the colors I want, how to balance out my paintings, and how to think like a painter. Like I said above, I no longer feel like an idiot where painting is concerned, I feel like I can paint, which is exactly what Edwards wants from her readers.

The only problem I have with the book is that my color mixes don't always come out looking the same as in the book, even though I do what she says to do, but it may be the limitations of color in printing a book that is the problem, maybe not, I don't know. But unlike some of the other "reviewers," I had no problem getting all the right materials. Just go to Dick Blick Art Supplies online and you will find all the materials she wants you to have, no problem, including all the right colors.

If you have never understood color theory before and want to understand it, and if you have never been taught to mix paint before but want to learn it now, I highly recommend this book. Maybe it should be called "Painting for Dummies," or something, because I am not so sure how much help it is for people who already call themselves artists, but it is helping this historian learn to express her creative side with confidence and in color.

5 out of 5 stars Making Color Sing.......2007-10-17

This book was suggested by one of my Art Teachers in College. It was in answer to my question in regards to studying more about the use of colour in watercolour painting. It has yielded a wealth of information. I look forward to working my way through the rest of the book and applying the knowledge it contains. Would make a great short course textbook too. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to know more about the use of colours in their painting, regarding of the medium they choose.

5 out of 5 stars Making Color Sing .......2007-10-17

This book is great but be forewarned that there is a LOT of fairly technical explanation and a lot to absorb. But if that's what you are wanting (I did want that) the author is easy to read and doles out the information in digestible chapters. If you want explanations and content, you'll get your money's worth. And oh yeah...her watercolors in the book are amazing, so she must know what she's talking about!

5 out of 5 stars Making Color Sing.......2007-10-12

This is an excellent book for both the beginning and accomplished watercolor artists. Gives a very thorough review of how to mix watercolor paint to get beautiful colors. Includes exercises.

4 out of 5 stars Covers so much.......2007-09-04

This book covers so many types of paintings from traditional to some abstracts. The examples are well done and very helpful. Might be a bit too involved for a new artist to understand. Lots of information.

5 out of 5 stars Making Color Sing by Jeanne Dobie.......2007-08-08

This is a terrific book. Not only is it beautiful and inspiring, it contains alot of information about how to use color in watercolor painting. The material is presented in a very clear and understandable way. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested is learning about how to use color in watercolor painting.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the artist wanting to understand color.......2007-03-11

5 out of 5 stars great introduction to color.......2001-03-12

if you are a beginning artist, an aspiring designer or just someone fascinated with color, then this is a great publication to train yourself in the many nuances of color vision.

the format is a small black three-ring binder of 13 white card pages, and 13 small plastic baggies of dull finish color chips, somewhat smaller than postage stamps. each page presents an empty grid of color (light to dark down the page, and dull to brilliant across it) that you must fill in manually by placing each chip in its assigned position. there are no codes or color names printed on the back of the color chips to help you along, but there is an introductory page explaining the basic concepts of hue, chroma (saturation) and value, the three basic attributes of color.

accompanying the binder is a staple bound color primer by joy turner luke. although the production values are pretty modest, this is one of the best overviews of color i have read anywhere, particularly for artists and designers. luke gets into the history of color research, the basics of color vision, the details of color mixing (she has some sobering critical thoughts about the many commerical "artist's color wheels" on the market today), color design and more.

the color chips are fussy to work with; they are delivered unattached to the card pages so that you can sort and rearrange them in various color tests or color demonstrations, but it's easy to mix them up. i found it most convenient to glue them into place, so that they wouldn't get lost and were ready for quick reference. that tedious exercise apart, this is a very instructive introductory resource for young adults and color students of any age.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for students and professionals.......1999-04-07

This is a great teaching tool for students and professionals. As a student worker for a professor in my Textile and Apparel program at The University of Northern Iowa, I completed the color set and now want one of my own. It helps expand the understanding of hue, chroma, value, and richness

I found this book a valuable addition to my library. As an Artist it proved to be a wonderful learning tool, with detailed explainations, examples, and a number of practical step by step learning project. It has added great depth to my paintings. I would recommend it to both experienced artist and beginners. Beautiful colour photos!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Color.......2007-01-25

This is an excellent book for learning color theory. You can tell she loves teaching because she doesn't hold back. She is really trying to help you learn the concepts. She paints in an impressionist style, but her methods would work no matter what your style is.

4 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2006-09-01

It just didn't motivate me like I wanted it to.... so I sold it. But, it does have some good steps to getting that impressionistic look. I suggest trying out the book by Susan Sarback, Capturing Radiant Color in Oils (Paperback)
ISBN: 1581800614. I've been on her website, and she has some remarkable paintings as well.

This discussed painting in a way I needed to hear. It was easy to work with and inspired ideas for me to try. Great book

One lovely feature of this volume is that it shows the real material that inspired different faux finishes next to the excellent painted imitations. After extensive coverage of all aspects of getting started (tools and materials, preparation, safety concerns, and design and color considerations), and of working with glazes, there are dozens of detailed recipes for various marble and graining effects. The final chapter, "Professional Practice," explains how to set up your own decorative-painting business, including assembling a portfolio, identifying and reaching your market, financial planning, calculating rates and expenses, preparing samples, organizing the workspace, and working with clients. You'll even find a prototype contract and a checklist of supplies to bring on the job. Those who want to produce spectacular faux-finish results will learn a lot from Professional Painted Finishes.

I bought this book more than ten years ago, I have an almost complete collection of books on painted finished, especially of wood and marble. The "Professional Painted Finishes" is absolutely the best I have, it is oozing QUALITY throughout. It is not for beginners but is The reference to return to again and again. It is also lovely just to browse through.

I liked this book because it contained great illustrations and it also had helpful information about the business side of faux finishing. The text is compact, so each page contains alot of data.

5 out of 5 stars Superb book - Knowledge of teaching & Painting -.......2001-12-09

Great book for all levels.
Ina and Allan Marx run a great faux finishing school that has spawned this great book. Complete
and through it a bible for novice to expert painters. Not only do they teach you the technique, but alos
how to "look and see" the item you are painting from nature. They are true professionals and
above all both are excellent teachers. I have taken their classes, and as there is no substituion for
taking one of their classes, this book is a great how to guide if you can't take one.
Excellent. Their knowledge of teaching and superb knowledge of faux painting marry in this books.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Do It!!!!!.......2007-08-17

If you are buying this book because it is required text for his talk, do youself a BIG service and get your refund immediately. He promises to deliver how to teach you graphics in 7 or 12 days, depending on the location, and he will not deliver. He takes your money, teaches, perhaps what equates to two days of real teaching and continously tells you how privileged you are to learn these things from him. The remaining time is spent on his non-stop blathering about non-related ideas like his philosophy, websites (like myspace), etc., etc. He wastes your valuable time and your hard earned money. Be forewarned!

5 out of 5 stars rendering techniques are easy to understand.......2007-01-17

it is avery fantastic book im very happy to have it its educational and a very paowerful reference for rendering, it is time saving and easy to apply, wonderful colour schemes, i recomend this book to all architectural renderers & architects as well

2 out of 5 stars Awful.......2006-01-11

I bought this book and disliked it so much that it was the one and only book I have ever returned to Amazon. It was terribly dated which would have been acceptable if the content was there but it wasn't. Save some money AND get what you're looking for in Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers by Michael E. Doyle. That's what I replaced it with and I love it!

2 out of 5 stars Description misleading.......2005-10-23

I just want to emphasize to someone interested in purchasing this book...there is NO verbal technique given on how to render any drawings. There is a drawing only...with a description of paper, medium, etc...but no "how to" on reproducing it. I am a professional artist and I was hoping to learn from this book how someone else might create a drawing with certian papers, paints, etc....but, there is no information of the steps taken...just the end result.

3 out of 5 stars No techniques, just references.......2005-09-21

Overall, a feeling of disappointment. The title claims techniques but there is absolutely no guidance, no comments, and no insight for the reader. This is a picture book filled with a collection of renderings with minimal captions noting materials used and acknowledgements. Flipping page after page the reader begins to recognize the styles of the recurring artists. This book may help you identify a style (although dated) to pursue but it ultimately becomes the reader's burden to try to reproduce selected rendering through trail and error.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for kids.......2007-10-25

This book is great for older youngsters, but my 5 year old love it. The pictures are beautiful too. Very informative

5 out of 5 stars Great, whether you get to the rain forest or not.......2002-03-14

The One Small Square series is wonderful: the concept is that you take a hypothetical square foot of an environment- woods, seashore, arctic tundra, rainforest, etc.- and explore it at all levels, from underground to the sky. Each book is extensively illustrated with all of the inter-connected layers of life- from fungus to megafauna- in the Square. On the margin of most of the 2-page spreads are activities that you can do, no matter where you live. Food chains, life cycles & seasons are explored, and the back section has an identification guide to all of the life forms presented in the book.

We took One Small Square: Tropical Rain Forest with us on a trip to the Brazilian rainforest with our 5 & 7 year olds. The book was great- for the grown ups & the kids! We used it as a guide to identify many of the animals & plants we saw, as background to help the girls understand what they were going to see, as reading on the long trips up the river. We did many of the activities- some before, some during, and some after the trip. Our guide was so impressed with it that he ordered a copy for himself, saying that it was hard to find something with so much information that was both accurate and interesting to people at many different levels of knowledge. Highly recommended!

Book Description

A $1.3 trillion industry, the US nonprofit sector is the world's seventh largest economy. From art museums and university hospitals to think tanks and church charities, over 1.5 million organizations of staggering diversity share the tax-exempt 501(c)(3) designation, if little else. Many social justice organizations have joined this world, often blunting political goals to satisfy government and foundation mandates. But even as funding shrinks and government surveillance rises, many activists often find it difficult to imagine movement-building outside the nonprofit model.

The Revolution Will Not Be Funded gathers original essays by radical activists from around the globe who are critically rethinking the long-term consequences of this investment. Together with educators and nonprofit staff they finally name the "nonprofit industrial complex" and ask hard questions: How did politics shape the birth of the nonprofit model? How does 501(c)(3) status allow the state to co-opt politi-cal movements? Activists or -careerists? How do we fund the movement outside this complex? Urgent and visionary, The Revolution Will Not Be Funded is an unbeholden expose of the "nonprofit industrial complex" and its quietly devastating role in managing dissent.

As an organizer working in and out of the confines of non-profit organizations, I give my highest recommendations for this extremely important collection of essays. I often wonder how I've gotten to a point where I spend less time in the community, and more time sitting in front of my computer writing grant proposals, calculating budgets and writing final reports for foundations and government agencies. As many of the authors in the book suggest, shouldn't we be accountable to our constituents rather than foundations, which serve as little more than tax shelters through which "white capital is circulated among white people and works to maintain systems of white supremacy"? Through the proliferation of non-profits and foundations, radical social movements in the US have been co-opted to a point where the movement eerily resembles the oppressive capitalist social order we claim to be challenging, giving rise to the Non-Profit Industrial Complex.

Collaboration is stifled when fierce competition for funding and stringent, narrow grant guidelines divide groups that are working towards the same goal. Perhaps most disheartening is the NPIC's power to shape our approaches and tactics for social change. As Dylan Rodriguez points out, "[m]ore insidious than the...constraints exerted by the foundation/state/non-profit nexus is the way in which [it]...grounds an epistemology--literally, a way of knowing social change and resistance praxis--that is difficult to escape or rupture." This epistemology is responsible for the belief that activists must conform to 501(c)(3) status for legitimacy and funding and that social services serve a greater need and purpose than the arduous task of social change.

Tiffany Lethabo King and Ewuare Osayande warn that "philanthropy never intends to fund revolutionary struggle that demands the just seizure of wealth, resources, and power that has been gained by exploiting the bodies, lives and land of people of color worldwide." The NPIC's tentacles reach far beyond the US. Movements in the Global South are already under the threat of becoming non-profitized and co-opted. As activists in the US, we have an obligation to continue this discourse, learn from one another's mistakes and organize beyond the NPIC.

Book Description

The masterworks of one of the most influential teacher-artists of the twentieth century, originally published as a limited, boxed edition in 1963, was conceived as a guide and teaching aid for artists, instructors, and students. A paperbound edition, containing the unabridged text of the original edition, plus ten representative color plates, chosen from the original silk-screen reproductions and printed by offset lithography, was published in 1971. Since those color plates have now been worn out in repeated reprintings, Mr. Albers has selected ten different color studies, with new comments, for this revised edition.

"The text of Interaction of Color provides the careful reader with the content of Josef Albers’ famous color course. His teaching is based on learning by direct perception, and not by theories or color systems. There are many books on color on the market, but no one combines eyesight with such profound insight as Josef Albers does in Interaction of Color."—Hannes Beckmann

"The publication of this famous book in paperback is an event. . . . It is clearly written and easy to understand. . . . This book ought to be owned by any serious student or teacher, regardless of the kind of painting he does."—The Artist

A must have for the serious colorist by one of the great masters of abstraction.

4 out of 5 stars For more color plates..............2007-05-03

Previous reviews have bemoaned a lack of color plates. I just wanted to clarify that the 2006 Revised & Expanded edition has many more than the 8 or 10 mentioned by other reviewers. In the version I purchased (2006), the back half, approx., of the book is devoted to color plates that refer back to the chapters where particular principles are discussed. The color plates are on the right leaf, and an explanation of said plate is on the left. In the margin of the left, a reference back to the chapter/section in the book is made so that further reading on each principle is easy to locate. This is perhaps a little more awkward than having the plates sprinkled within the chapter/sections themselves, but for the cost of the book, this is an entirely acceptable method of sharing both written information and visual reinforcement. I counted more than 35 plates in the book.

I found this book boring and hard to follow. I would never recommend this book and only purchased it becuase it was required for a class I was taking. Other people in class really liked this book, but I hated it. I had a hard time getting through it and found it to be as dry as walking through the desert.

excellent revised/expanded edition of the classic albers theory/anti-theory of color. the classic that most art schools continue to base their color courses on, this edition has more reproductions from the original collectors hand silkscreened edition and is nearly twice the number of pages.

Albers is a color genius, and although I personally incorporate several color theorists into my decision making in color or color theory practices. Albers has an easy approach to understanding color.

4 out of 5 stars If You're Beginning, You Need This Book.......2007-10-16

"Colored Pencil for the Serious Beginner," though not everything you are going to need, will probably be indispensible for your first steps in serious colored pencil drawing. Bet Borgeson gives the basics you have to have in color theory, composition, and how to keep your inspiration flowing. She also talks about the ins and outs of how to sell your wares and actually establish a career in the arts. So there is alot of good here.

I didn't find all that I wanted, though, to tell the truth. In addition to the composition and mood and so forth of a piece, I was hoping for some more prosaic advice on how to do things like make an apple look like an apple instead of a tomato, or a blueberry look like a blueberry instead of a grape. "Colored Pencil for the Serious Beginner" was frustratingly short on topics like this, or what colors to belnd together to get flesh tones, or what colors to use to make convincing shadows, and so forth.

So you won't find everything in this book, but what book will give you everything anyway? In summary, it's pretty good for what it's intended for, and if you're a beginner, you're probably going to need it. Four stars.

3 out of 5 stars I guess it depends on what you mean by serious.......2007-04-08

When she says serious... in the last few pages she tells you about becoming a full time artist, pros and cons kind of thing and options. She gives suggestions of places you can look into to show your work, but does not tell you how, just where to go. She does however say to go to the library to find out more or the internet. I guess most people don't know that, to me it is obvious. But hey, now you know and you didn't have to buy the book!

The artwork in the book sucks. It lacks depth and looks flat. Sure there is color, but it all seems to have the same pressure to it. Some may be better than others, buy my eyes don't want to look at it long. So, a tip that I know in becoming a serious artist is that if you actually want people to buy your work, you will want to create something that captures the attention of the viewer and keeps them there. The more they look at your work or the longer, the more likely they will buy it. The only one in there that looked pretty cool was the monopoly picture.

It's odd, she shows some basic examples of creating the illusion of 3D using tonal values from light to dark as well as discussing form, volume and space... but does not fully carry it through in her own work.

I just think if your going to learn from an artist, you would want to learn from someone who can give a good example. Why not learn it the right way the first time? There are too many other books that could do it better for ya. Check out books by Ann Kullberg, Janie Gildow, Gary Greene, Vera Curnow, or even Bernard Poulin. These artists have books for beginners and advanced, check them out and find the level best for you. They are better examples to follow. And if you want to start selling find a book strickly for that. Though Ann Kullberg, in "colored pencil portraits step-by-step has a section where she explains how she sells her portraits.

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?.......2007-03-30

How did this artist ever get this published? The artwork in this book is so amateurish I did not even want to read what he/she had to say. I don't want my pieces to look like theirs. It looked like junior high artwork. The proportions of animals were totally incorrect, color wasn't eye catching, pieces looked like crayon drawings. This must be self published. I returned the book I didn't even care that I lost my shipping costs, I would never look at it or read it again.

3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2007-02-06

I think this may be a fine book for more advanced artists. There was little help for true beginners, even"serious " ones. There was much philosophy and opionion, but little practical help.

5 out of 5 stars THE book on Colored Pencil........2007-01-25

If you can only have one book on colored pencil, let it be this one. I had to buy another one when my professor saw it. It is another book that I read with pen and highlighter in hand. I couldn't just read it I had to study it.
