    Book Description

Every year, thousands of college students invade Washington, D.C. and the fifty state capitals to volunteer as political interns. Unfortunately, they are rarely able to "hit the ground running," lacking the tools to help them do so. The Insider's Guide to Political Internships provides those tools. This volume contains practical, concise essays written by political professionals and scholars with extensive experience supervising internships, as well as advice from many former interns. The book highlights internships on Capitol Hill, at the White House, in the executive branch, at the state level, in the Congressional district office, and at non-profit groups.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone starting out!.......2005-10-07

Mack Mariani is one of the political master-minds of our time. He has even been considered the Carl Rove of local politics. While the reviewer below says that political interns don't make much money, I would argue that this book will allow you to enter the big league. When you have worked your way up, I guarantee you will have Mariani to thank! Basically, this is a MUST for anyone who wants to get into the wild world of politics.

    Good luck!

4 out of 5 stars A great resource, especially if you're interning on the Hill.......2005-08-24

I bought this book after obtaining an internship on Capitol Hill this past summer. I was surprised to learn that while hundreds of college students travel to Washington, D.C. each summer for political internships and many more intern at the state and local levels, there aren't many books out there that explain how to get ahead and make yourself stand out from the pack.

Written by two political scientists and professors who have taught classes that involve internship experiences, the book covers internships at the White House, non-profit organizations, and state/local government offices. The most extensive section, however, covers the Capitol Hill internship. Since I interned with a congressional representative, I found that Mariani and Reeher's detailed advice on how to conduct effective research, write an informative constituent letter, and obtain more challenging projects to be extremely valuable.

Even though I think this book would be most helpful for interns working on the Hill, the authors include many pointers that can be applicable to all internship settings. For example, they explain how to put an internship experience into perspective, to set realistic goals, and to realize how interning in a real-world setting can complement a political science education. The authors also include advice on how to develop and maintain a good relationship with intern coordinators, supervisors, and other employees in the workplace setting.

While the book did not exactly give me much advice on how to use my internship to develop my career prospects, it did help me pinpoint the goals I wanted to work towards and helped me accomplish them. This book, then, fills a gap in the genre of career counseling for politically-minded college students. It receives four stars for helpfulness.

5 out of 5 stars Great niche book for political internships........2003-05-27

I teach students in political science, and I have had several of them read this book and remark that it is very useful on several levels. First, it helps them conceptualize about the purpose and meaning of their internships. Second, the book helps them understand some of the details of the internships they are likely to secure. It also helps them to get a jump-start on the types of skills and tasks they need in their internships.

With internships becoming increasingly important to career-minded students (and their parents), this book is a nice way for students to balance their practical ambitions with their political science education. It is a welcome addition to internships, which too often occur serendipitously and absent any academic perspective. With this book, students are able to think about what they are doing, why they are doing it, and what the internship means for their studies and career interests.

    5 out of 5 stars From the book's editors.......2003-04-03

The Insider's Guide has been favorably profiled in a number of publications, including Roll Call, Capitol Hill's leading newspaper. Our students have found the book extremely useful in helping them to get the most out of their political internship experiences. College faculty and internship supervisors have also found the book helpful. --G. Reeher and M. Mariani

1 out of 5 stars Not much of an insider.......2003-03-31

Major disappointment. This book offered little in the way of "insider" insights, but read primarily an attempt by the author to present himself as a political "player."

Interns typically don't make much money, so I'd recommend you save yours for something other than this book.

This book is a great step-by-step guide of how to approach the application essays, registering for APPIC, and debunks some urban legends about "the match." Additionally, there are tips on interview questions/questions you should ask, sample cv's, and suggestions for tracking your practicum hours. This book, however, does not offer much information about the APPIC Clearinghouse (God forbid that any of us have to go through that!!!).

    3 out of 5 stars EmmetMD.......2001-06-18

I thought this book was moderately helpful. I'm about to start my residency in OB-Gyn and this book offered a few helpful hints. Most of it seemed to be common sense, however. If you've made it through med school, you'll probably already know most of the information. Some of the chapters about medicine being so male dominated seemed a little out of date.

5 out of 5 stars Great for college students or people figuring out what they want to do.......2007-05-15

What a great book! You could literally live your life with this book going from one volunteer opportunity to another. The book is basically a list of short terms jobs ranging from camps to dude ranches to museums. It tells you if they pay you anything, if they feed you, if they board you, how long the job is for, and it gives descriptions and contact info. This is an excellent all in one resources for jobs in the US so quit the desk job and travel around volunteering for a living. This will inspire you to do it!

5 out of 5 stars Just Do It!.......2007-01-16

Excellent resource for the pure pleasure of doing something different. If you have the time, resources and an adventurous spirit, just go out and buy this book and then just do it!

    5 out of 5 stars ditto.......2006-07-10

"pretty good book. Wish there were more photos and that the photos were in color. Also I would have liked a few more animal short term job adventures. I noticed the book focused a lot on students and US locations but did include a section on global jobs and adventures abroad. loved how the book offered a good variety of jobs for all types of people with website and other critical info on each job!"

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not what I expected.......2006-05-27

I guess the title is phrased badly; I assumed that this book was about internships abroad, summer jobs abroad, etc, but it is about internships, summer jobs, seasonal work, and volunteer vacations in the United States, as well as "transitions" (whatever that means) abroad. And this book is not really a guide, in that it doesn't really give a lot of advice about different jobs and different fields. It is more a listing, like an address book of the most interesting companies (in the author's opinion) offering short-term work, with a very shallow description of the job and its hiring preferences. The only part that was really a guide was the bizarre information on finding yourself and journaling and exploring your passions. Apparently other people found this really great, but I got a little sick of inspirational quotes and follow-your-dreams sidebars; there are plenty of career-advice and self-help books offering this information. Luckily, I borrowed this book from the library, which is where it should stay. If you're looking for short-term opportunities in the United States, go to the library, look through this book, and take down the contact information for the companies you're interested in.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Fun.......2006-04-21

This book changed my life. It has led me into many adventures and helped me meet some of my closest friends. It is a book of possibilities and an opportunity to dream and create a unique life.

In addition, I love how easy it is to navigate.

    A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Above and Beyond the Rest.......2006-09-19

This books was excellent in that it showed, through real-life situations and examples, how to excel in the workforce. What more it covered every imaginable crevice in the employment application process, from resumes, to interviews, even what to wear! Speaking as a college student, the book provided plenty of insight and preperation, as well as enthusiasm in looking forward to the working world.

This book focused on IT-related fields, so it might be more suited for people intrested in a technical occupation, but the concepts and ideas are great, as well as universal. No fluff or alter-egos; just down-to-earth tactics for gaining the competitive edge in the industry.

5 out of 5 stars Great advice for the college kid on the go.......2006-02-26

The author has done a great job of covering what one needs to do in the digital era to land a "great job". He enumerates that which is often covered in similar books regarding making good resumes and cover letters, etc. but goes beyond to make recommendations, which are often skipped over in other books, regarding applying online, what to research about an organization and the art of interviewing.

Since all those that the author interviewed were technical (engineers and computer scientists) in nature, the book would likely be of more interest to job searching students of such a background.

I particularly like that at the end of each chapter, the author summarizes the bare essentials that one should perform. He provides a list, with time allotments, of what to do for each task (writing a resume, researching an organization, etc). This is particularly useful for the college kid with little time for job seeking between doing assignment, eating pizza and studying for tests.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommend!!!.......2006-02-25

This is an excellent book with some impressive resume samples and interview tactics. It covers everything you need to know to find internship and/or full-time job while still being a college student. The most important is that it is up-to-date and that it gives you a great insight into how to begin your carrier path.

5 out of 5 stars The first of it's kind.......2006-02-17

This is the only book I know of that uses case studies of actual college students. It shows their actual resumes and figures out what they did to help them land the job they wanted. I find this perspective much more useful than one from an employeer.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me land my job!.......2005-12-27

I discovered this book after browsing the author's blog (http://landingthejob.blogspot.com) and found it to be in a class above the rest. It has everything you'll need including a guide to resumes, career fairs, applying online, behavioral interviews, and technical interviews.

I was pleasantly surprised by the sections at the end of each chapter profiling people who have recently interviewed for companies such as Google, Boeing, and EA Games. Each profile even includes the resume that actually landed the individual the job which I used to get ideas for my resume. I also used the sample behavioral/technical interview questions, the step-by-step offer comparison section, and the salary negotiation advice. The only complaint I have is that the sample resumes are a little fuzzy (although still very readable).

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Concise, witty and incredibly helpful.......2003-02-21

Sick of hearing the same re-hashed and condescending advice for college students looking to intern? Then pick up Scoring a Great Internship by Ellen Rubinstein, a refreshing, honest and witty approach to internships.

Scoring a Great Internship gets straight to the point, and is helpfully indexed so that finding the information you need is quick and easy. It is a complete guide to the complete process, from finding the internship to keeping in touch with the company after you've finished.

There is not only advice and tips from fellow students, but examples too--especially helpful for resumes. I really appreciated not having to consult another guide for advice on resumes and cover letters; it was all right there, down to a list of useful verbs to make my resume more dynamic. This inclusiveness also applies to interviews, to which a whole section is devoted.

And even after you've scored that internship, this book continues being useful, guiding you through the trickier areas of being an intern: resentful colleagues; being given all the office photocopying; and asking the boss right questions, at the right time.

Finally, the guide is well-written and witty. The author includes personal experiences, often stories of things gone wrong or unexpectedly right; she does not allow them to take over the guide, rather they reminded me that this advice came from someone real, someone who has both made mistakes and had a lot of success. And because it's written by someone who is still a student, the advice is never condescending, superfluous, or out-of-date.

      Highly recommended--and it really works!

5 out of 5 stars Helped me score a summer internship!.......2003-02-11

Calling all students: all you need to snag a great summer internship is this book and the internet - find all the places you want to apply and then READ THIS BOOK! It will give you great advice from students who've been there, and tell you how to construct a great resume, ace your interview, and then succeed once you're in the door. A quick and great read!

5 out of 5 stars Great internship advice.......2002-12-17

This internship book really covers all the bases without wasting your time listing every single internship on the planet (which you can do on the web anyway). It breaks down how to network & find what you want, write a great resume, do a perfect phone or in-person interview, and then it even goes into how to make the most of your actual internship experience (an especially good section). The student quotes from those who've been where I want to go were extremely valuable, and my summer internship search is now right on track!! If you're looking for an internship, this book will really help you with some great tips; highly recommended!

      from Blue Jean Online ...

      by Emily A. Stoddard, Correspondent

In today's job search, it has become apparent that it is not enough to present future employers with a degree. More and more, internships act as the gateway to great careers. Therefore, Scoring a Great Internship, part of the "Students Helping Students" line from Natavi Guides, is a great starting point for any student who has entered or will enter the search for an internship.

Blue Jean's own Ellen Rubinstein is the primary author of Scoring a Great Internship, but the guide also contains a variety of firsthand experiences from students at schools like Cornell, Yale, and Bryn Mawr College. Thanks to the advice of these students and the depth of Rubenstein's experiences, the guide avoids pitfalls such as preaching to its audience. For people like me that may not have someone older and more experienced to look to for internship advice, the guide is a practical, friendly source of information. You can trust that each tip has been put to the test by students like Rubinstein.

Thanks to its simple organization, the guide becomes a tool you may return to whenever a question arises. Each section tackles another aspect of internships, leading you from the search for internships to what to do once you receive an internship. This is definitely something you'll want to leave on your desk for future reference.

I appreciated the straightforward examples Scoring a Great Internship offered. Oftentimes, how-to books elaborate on the importance of cover letters and resumes but fail to provide clear examples of them. This guide acts on its advice by offering samples of actual cover letters and resumes and breaking them down by paragraph or section. Simple enough, right?

Furthermore, this guide offers an extensive list of resources. With tons of web addresses provided, you can do everything from learn more about interning to searching for actual internships. There is no guarantee that you'll score your great internship because of this guide, but this is certainly a surefire way to avoid the mistakes of fellow intern-seeking rookies.
